Among the findings are the following: Virtual Civilization has infrastructural characteristics, a world-wide unlimited, socially constructed work and leisure space in cyberspace, and it can last centuries/millennia—as long as informing systems are operational. Practical implications: The mission of Virtual Civilization is to control the public policies of real civilizations in order to secure …

Depression, Religiosity, And Parenting Styles Among Mormon Adolescents, Courtney Kinneard, Mark Ogletree

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

We examined how religiosity and the parent-child relationship are associated with depression in 12-14 yr old teenagers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint. A random sample of 493 revealed three correlations: girls who have a strong connection with their mother have a negative correlation with depression; daily spiritual experiences are negatively correlated with depression, and negative religious coping is positively correlated with depression symptoms.

Mindfulness Interventions For Preventing And Treating Eating Disorders In Adolescent And Young Adult Females, Amanda P. Graves, Jane Lassetter Apr 2017

Mindfulness Interventions For Preventing And Treating Eating Disorders In Adolescent And Young Adult Females, Amanda P. Graves, Jane Lassetter

Student Works

Purpose: The portrayal of women in the mass media is increasingly sexualized. An accumulation of negative media exposure can cause adolescent girls to fall prey to self-objectification. Repeated experiences of self-objectification can result in body shame, which consequently may lead to dietary restraint and binge eating to achieve the idealized thin body. The goals of a mindfulness intervention are to change how one feels in response to external cues and to develop healthier coping skills. The purpose of this literature review is to compare and contrast recent studies on mindfulness measures aimed at preventing or treating disordered eating behaviors in …

Similarities And Differences In The Influence Of Paternal And Maternal Depression On Adolescent Well-Being, Kevin Shafer, Brandon Fielding, Douglas Wendt

Faculty Publications

Depressed parents may negatively influence the well-being and outcomes of their children. However, prior research has mostly addressed mother's depression and early childhood outcomes, whereas fathers and adolescents have been largely ignored in the literature. Using data from the sixth grade and age 15 waves of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development's Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, this study addresses similarities and differences in the influence of paternal and maternal depression on adolescent behavior. Results from structural equation models showed that paternal depression had direct effects on both internalizing and externalizing …

Shaping Immigration Law Through A Business Law Model, Mitchell Reber Apr 2017

Shaping Immigration Law Through A Business Law Model, Mitchell Reber

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

This article argues that state-produced immigration law can be a more effective method of regulating immigration when compared with current federal regulation. Currently, regulation as controlled by the federal government supersedes any laws created at the state level and subjects those laws produced by states to extensive review by the courts. The article proposes that immigration law should follow a business-law model when regulating immigration on a state level and discusses how the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 needs to be reinterpreted. The article then describes three ways this change in immigration law could be implemented and confers …

Death And Dignity, Michael Gardner

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

This paper discusses the contemporary debate over physician-assisted suicide and focuses specifically on Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act. Because the majority of the states have yet to pass legislation on physician-assisted suicide, the greatest debate over the legality of euthanasia is yet to come. This paper addresses the arguments for and against physician-assisted suicide with the purpose of educating the reader regarding the social, moral and ethical consequences of allowing or denying its practice.

Redefining Immutability: Utah's Model For Advancing Lgbt Rights, Zachary Herzog Apr 2017

Redefining Immutability: Utah's Model For Advancing Lgbt Rights, Zachary Herzog

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

This paper attempts to explain the Supreme Court’s recent efforts to expand the definition of immutable rights to protect LGBT Americans and argues that gender identity also be included in that definition. States should expand this definition in their own constitutions and do so in a way that protects the interests of the LGBT community as well as other demographics. Utah Senate Bill 296 is a good example of how this definition can be successfully expanded, and should be a model for states in which LGBT antidiscrimination legislation has been less effective.

Leaving Behind Self-Righteousness: Using Mutual Respect And Compromise To Solve Emerging Conflicts Between Religious Liberty And Same-Sex Marriage, Benjamin Issa Apr 2017

Leaving Behind Self-Righteousness: Using Mutual Respect And Compromise To Solve Emerging Conflicts Between Religious Liberty And Same-Sex Marriage, Benjamin Issa

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

This paper attempts to provide a reasonable framework for thinking about religious liberty issues following the Supreme Court's decision in Obergefell v. Hodges. Following the decision in that case, which requires states to wed same-sex couples, there has been a national debate about when - and if - religious business owners can discriminate based on sexual orientation. This issue pits religious liberty organizations against LGBT rights organizations, and leaves both sides feeling demonized and misunderstood. This paper advocates a more nuanced approach, and suggests that reasonable compromise is possible if we are willing to leave behind self-righteousness and instead engage …

The Systematic Neglect Of Inmates Suffering From Substance-Use Disorder In The American Prison Systems, J Lyons Apr 2017

The Systematic Neglect Of Inmates Suffering From Substance-Use Disorder In The American Prison Systems, J Lyons

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

While the problem of crime and its perpetuation is multifactorial and inherently complex, the mental and physical health of criminals falls under the legal oversight of the penal system. Prisoners have a legal right to quality medical care—a right that is often forgotten and neglected by society at large and, more specifically, the court system itself.

Workplace Discrimination And The Inefficiency Of The Ellerth/Faragher Defense, Kimberly F. Medina Apr 2017

Workplace Discrimination And The Inefficiency Of The Ellerth/Faragher Defense, Kimberly F. Medina

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

This article addresses the growing problem of workplace discrimination. Even though a few states have implemented laws requiring employers to train their employees on workplace discrimination, the number of discrimination claims has continued to rise each year. In 1998 the Supreme Court ruled on two important cases regarding workplace discrimination. Their opinion on these cases established what is known as the Ellerth/Faragher defense. The Ellerth/Faragher defense sets standards that an employer must meet to claim affirmative defense in cases of illegal discrimination. This article argues that the current standards set in this defense are flawed and need to be updated. …

Abstinence-Only Sex Education On Trial, Kendall W. Orton Apr 2017

Abstinence-Only Sex Education On Trial, Kendall W. Orton

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Title V abstinence-only sex education funds are used to fund programs that do not reduce sexual activity, STDs, or pregnancy in high school students, contrary to the purported goals of public school sexual education. This paper outlines the history and legal and social research regarding sexual education. It also argues that comprehensive sex education does not violate the Establishment clause or Free Exercise clause by applying the Lemon doctrine. This paper advocates that the United States government should only fund comprehensive sexual education models that have shown positive results and promote healthy attitudes about sex.

Child Prisoners: Asylum-Seeking Detainees In The U.S. And The Violation Of The Flores Settlement Agreement, Miriam L B Sweeney Apr 2017

Child Prisoners: Asylum-Seeking Detainees In The U.S. And The Violation Of The Flores Settlement Agreement, Miriam L B Sweeney

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The Flores Settlement Agreement allows for asylum-seeking minors to be released from detention if the minors are in unsafe circumstances. Children are experiencing physical and mental harm in asylum-seekers’ detention. This harm constitutes a lack of safety. Therefore, the current conditions of detention for asylum-seekers violate the Flores Settlement Agreement.

Reevaluating The Constitutionality Of Blanket Primaries, Soren J. Schmidt Apr 2017

Reevaluating The Constitutionality Of Blanket Primaries, Soren J. Schmidt

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

I argue that the Supreme Court’s ruling in California Democratic Party v. Jones should be reconsidered and overturned, allowing states to adopt blanket-primary election systems. Given the crucial role that primaries play in the public process of elections, parties’ rights of association should not trump the right of the people to select their own representatives. In Jones, the Court applied a stricter constitutional test than necessary, leading to an erroneous conclusion. I demonstrate why a more flexible test would have been more appropriate for judging primary elections. Under this alternative test, public state interests are weighed against party rights injuries. …

The Mediating Role Of Relational Aggression Between Neuroticism And Couple Attachment And Relationship Quality In Long-Term Committed Relationships, Sarah Annis Eliason Apr 2017

The Mediating Role Of Relational Aggression Between Neuroticism And Couple Attachment And Relationship Quality In Long-Term Committed Relationships, Sarah Annis Eliason

Theses and Dissertations

Much of the literature regarding relational aggression in romantic relationships has focused on the behaviors and outcomes of the actor and victim independently. Additionally, the relationships studied usually cover emerging adult samples, and rarely expand to long-term committed relationships, such as cohabiting or married couples. In this paper I sought to determine if relationally aggressive behaviors in long-term committed relationships over time resulted as a function of individual predictors (e.g. neuroticism), or as a process of couple interactions (e.g. couple attachment); and how these traits directly and indirectly (through relational aggression) influenced relationship quality. An Actor Partner Independence Model (APIM) …

The Social Validity Of Online Parent Involvement In A School-Based Social And Emotional Learning Program: Whytry For Parents, Gina P. Hales Apr 2017

The Social Validity Of Online Parent Involvement In A School-Based Social And Emotional Learning Program: Whytry For Parents, Gina P. Hales

Theses and Dissertations

Involving parents in school-based learning can be difficult for both schools and parents, and more innovative approaches to involving parents are needed. Internet-based programs have the potential to address barriers to parent participation, but more research is needed to determine the effectiveness and social validity of such programs. This study explored the social validity of WhyTry for Parents, an internet-based program for parents of students enrolled in WhyTry, a school-based social and emotional learning program for students in grades K through 12. Eleven elementary, middle, and high schools across the United States participated in the study by inviting parents of …

Measuring Subtypes Of Withdrawal In Children With Language Impairment, Emma Maille Coombs Apr 2017

Measuring Subtypes Of Withdrawal In Children With Language Impairment, Emma Maille Coombs

Theses and Dissertations

Children with language impairment (LI) often demonstrate increased levels of withdrawal, specifically the reticent and solitary-passive subtypes. Although it is recognized that there are several subtypes of withdrawal, the relationship between withdrawal and children with LI is complex and unclear. The aim of this study was to examine items on the Teacher Behavior Rating Scale (TBRS) to better understand the nature of withdrawal in children with LI. A factor analysis of TBRS scores of 355 participants was conducted to ensure that individual items on each subscale were measuring the same construct. An invariance analysis was also performed to ensure items …

A Social Influences Framework Related To College Student Learning Failures, Keith R. Proctor Apr 2017

A Social Influences Framework Related To College Student Learning Failures, Keith R. Proctor

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explored ways that college students reflectively described the social influences related to their learning failures. This exploration was conducted using semi-structured interviews and Stake's multiple case analysis method. The findings from the interviews were used to develop a framework that describes the key social influence attributes of the learning failure experiences. The key attributes of the framework include: (a) roles, (b) context, and (c) phases. Each key attribute is discussed in detail. The framework serves as the means for exploring several related strands of research related to learning failure in a cohesive way, potentially enriching our understanding of …

Effects Of Gm Disclosure Statements On Consumer Perceptions Of Selected Food Products In Survey And Sensory Panel Settings, Ellyn Margaret Newcomb Apr 2017

Effects Of Gm Disclosure Statements On Consumer Perceptions Of Selected Food Products In Survey And Sensory Panel Settings, Ellyn Margaret Newcomb

Theses and Dissertations

The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard (PL 114-216) will require nearly all foods sold in the U.S. to bear a statement disclosing whether they contain genetically modified (GM) material. Past studies suggest the presence of such a statement could have profound effects on consumers; however, research comparing consumer response towards different GM-disclosure statements is scarce. PL 114-216 states that GM foods shall not be considered more or less safe than their non-bioengineered counterparts, nevertheless it would benefit regulators and food manufacturers to be aware of the possible effects such disclosures might have on consumers. In a nationwide survey, multiple disclosure …

The Perceptual Learning Style Preferences Of Hispanic Students In Higher Education, Catherine Johnston Lui Apr 2017

The Perceptual Learning Style Preferences Of Hispanic Students In Higher Education, Catherine Johnston Lui

Theses and Dissertations

This paper addresses the question of whether higher education Hispanic students of different nationalities have different perceptual learning style preferences. Independent samples t-tests findings suggest the country of origin of a Hispanic student's parents has a statistically significant relationship (n=165, p<0.0073) with student's learning style preferences. ANOVA results also identified a statistically significant relationship between SES and group learning style (p<0.004,) and between visual learning style and two factors: age (p<0.011) and family education (p<0.033).

The Nicotine Content Of A Sample Of E-Cigarette Liquid Manufactured In The United States, Barrett H. Raymond Apr 2017

The Nicotine Content Of A Sample Of E-Cigarette Liquid Manufactured In The United States, Barrett H. Raymond

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Use of electronic cigarettes (EC) has dramatically increased in the United States since 2010 with a forecasted growth of 37% between 2014 and 2019. There is little research on e-liquid nicotine concentration from domestic manufacturers. However, limited research outside of the U.S. found wide inconsistencies between the labeled concentration of nicotine in e-liquids and the actual nicotine concentration. Methods: The seven most popular online manufacturers or distributors were identified. E-liquid samples of the five most popular flavors from each manufacturer were purchased in nicotine concentrations of 0 mg/ml and 18 mg/ml. Of the samples purchased (n=70), all were labeled …
