Air Quality Impacts From Mineral Dust, Fireworks, And Urban Pollution Revealed By Trace Element Chemistry And Strontium Isotopes Ratios In The Wasatch Front, Utah, Usa, Micah J. Marcy Aug 2022

Air Quality Impacts From Mineral Dust, Fireworks, And Urban Pollution Revealed By Trace Element Chemistry And Strontium Isotopes Ratios In The Wasatch Front, Utah, Usa, Micah J. Marcy

Theses and Dissertations

Airborne particulate matter (PM) in urban areas is derived from a combination of natural and anthropogenic sources. To identify PM sources and their effects on air quality, we collected PM using active filter samplers over a two-year period in the urban Wasatch Front, northern Utah, an area affected by multiple pollution sources. Filters from active samplers and other PM samples were analyzed for major and trace element concentrations and 87Sr/86Sr ratios. We identified wind-blown mineral dust from dry lake beds, winter inversions, and fireworks as primary PM sources affecting air quality in the Wasatch Front. Dust contributes Al, Be, Ca, …

Daily Survey Of Negative Affect And Social Interactions In Young Adults With High Levels Of Social Stress, Danica L. Limon Aug 2022

Daily Survey Of Negative Affect And Social Interactions In Young Adults With High Levels Of Social Stress, Danica L. Limon

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Few studies have focused on the contextual influences that impact negative affect (NA) and risk for mood disorders in young adults. Research using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods has shown that neurotypical adults with elevated social anxiety may be more sensitive to their social environment. To date, little is known about how types of social interactions impact autistic adults, who may show varying levels of social anxiety and social motivation. Aim: Our goal was to examine the heterogeneity in daily social experiences for autistic and socially anxious adults. Method: Using EMA surveys, we tracked daily self-reported face-to-face interactions and …

An Exploration Of Factors That Impact Uptake Of Human Papillomavirus Vaccines, David Samuel Redd Aug 2022

An Exploration Of Factors That Impact Uptake Of Human Papillomavirus Vaccines, David Samuel Redd

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction The discovery and continued development of vaccines is arguably one of the most important innovations in human history. Vaccination greatly reduces the worldwide incidence and transmission of diseases, preventing permanent injury and premature death. Mass vaccination campaigns have led to the eradication or partial eradication of severe infectious such as smallpox and polio, have reduced childhood mortality, and has led to an overall increase in average health in the human population globally. Despite the documented benefits of vaccination, vaccine hesitancy is increasing, and the uptake of some vaccines is low. Vaccines have been so successful at preventing disease that …

Big Data Meta-Analyses Of Transcriptional Responses Of Human Samples To Orthohantavirus Infection And Shotgun Metagenomics From Crohn's Disease Patients., John L. Krapohl

Theses and Dissertations

Hantavirus is a dangerous zoonotic viral pathogen that is found across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. This virus causes a range of symptoms from flu-like malaise to heart failure and death. It is normally transmitted to humans via the aerosolized feces or urine of infected rodents. Currently, there are no known treatments for the disease, and it continues to threaten human health in endemic areas. In order to identify possible future therapeutic targets, we ran a meta-analysis of existing transcriptomic data collected from infected human tissue. Several genes and cellular pathways were identified, in addition to several potential therapeutics that …

Defining Cheating Using Multiple Models, Krista Joy Dowdle Aug 2022

Defining Cheating Using Multiple Models, Krista Joy Dowdle

Theses and Dissertations

Extradyadic romantic behavior in committed relationships, referred to here as "cheating," is a common occurrence. For the purposes of this study, we define cheating as romantic or sexual behaviors that occur outside of a committed romantic relationship and that violate the expectations of the relationship. This definition can be broken down into two parts: the behavior that occurred and the judgment of whether that behavior constitutes cheating. Using a large sample (N = 1,020), we tested a measure that conceptualized cheating as composing explicit behaviors, categorical judgment of behaviors, and dimensional judgment of behaviors. Fit statistics were mixed and we …

Regulation Of T Cell Activation By The Cd5 Co-Receptor And Altered Peptides, Characterization Of Thymidine Kinase-Specific Antibodies, And Integrating Genomics Education In Society, Kiara Vaden Whitley

Theses and Dissertations

Helper T cells (Th) are a vital component of the immune system responsible for directing other immune cells to eliminate pathogens and cancer. Specifically, Th cells facilitate B cell and cytotoxic T cell (Tc) activation and recruitment and enhance their function against cancer and infectious diseases. Th cells are a valuable resource for improving Tc responses in cancer treatment and have become a focus of immunotherapeutic research. While it is increasingly clear that helper T cells serve an important role, the details about which entities produce an effective Th cell response remain unclear. CD5 is a T cell co-receptor that …

Wearable Activity Trackers For Women: Motivating Factors For Increasing Physical Activity, Danielle A. Bate Aug 2022

Wearable Activity Trackers For Women: Motivating Factors For Increasing Physical Activity, Danielle A. Bate

Theses and Dissertations

Half of American women do not sustain recommended levels of physical activity (PA). Wearable activity trackers (WATs) may increase both awareness of, and PA if worn daily. Thus, WATs should include features and designs that encourage daily use. This study aimed to determine WAT features and designs most appealing to women and the motivational effects of various WATs. For this mixed-method pilot study, 15 women each trialed three WATs; documented daily PA levels; and rated their satisfaction with each device's comfort, features, and motivational effect. Additionally, participants shared experiences and feedback in focus groups. Features that promote adoption of WATs …

Examination Of 14-3-3 Interactors Identifies A Novel Mechanism Of Regulation For The Ubiquitin Binding Kinase Tnk1 That Can Be Targeted To Block Tumor Growth, Christina Marie Egbert

Theses and Dissertations

Decades of research have begun to identify oncogenic mut-drivers that are responsible for driving a large percentage of cancers. These high frequency mut-drivers have therapeutics in the clinic for patient treatment. However, there is another group of low frequency mut-drivers that fail to rise above the noise of the high frequently drivers. These low frequency drivers represent a group of genes with untapped potential for new targeted therapies. However, identifying these drivers can be difficult. This study focuses on identifying new functional phosphorylations using the phospho-docking protein 14-3-3. The family of 14-3-3 proteins have been linked to many oncogenic pathways …

A Spatial Long-Term Trend Analysis Of Estimated Chlorophyll-A Concentrations In Utah Lake Using Earth Observation Data, Kaylee Brook Tanner Aug 2022

A Spatial Long-Term Trend Analysis Of Estimated Chlorophyll-A Concentrations In Utah Lake Using Earth Observation Data, Kaylee Brook Tanner

Theses and Dissertations

We analyzed chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentrations in shallow, turbid Utah Lake using Landsat data from 1984 to 2021. Utah Lake is ~40 km by 21 km, has a surface area of ~390 km2, an average depth of ~3 m, and loses ~50% of inflow to evaporation. This limits spatial mixing, allowing us to evaluate impacts to smaller lake regions. We evaluated long-term trends at the pixel level and for areas related to boundary conditions. We created 17 study areas based on differences in shoreline development and nutrient inflows. We expected impacted areas to exhibit increasing chl-a trends, as population growth and …

Effects Of Localized Irrigation And Fertilizer On Woody Plant Establishment In Degraded Semi-Arid Environments, Holley M. Lund Aug 2022

Effects Of Localized Irrigation And Fertilizer On Woody Plant Establishment In Degraded Semi-Arid Environments, Holley M. Lund

Theses and Dissertations

Semi-arid native plant communities worldwide are often disturbed either intentionally or incidentally by human activity. In order to restore ecological function after human activities cease, native plant communities need to be restored. Woody plants are important to ecological function for many reasons including reducing erosion and providing food and shelter for wildlife. Unfortunately, woody plant establishment in these areas has proven to be challenging. Direct seeding efforts can be hindered by poor germination and low seedling emergence. To overcome this, seedling transplants are often used in harsh sites. However, transplanted woody seedlings often experience high mortality during the first year, …

Design And Characterization Of A Miniaturized Spectrometer For Wearable Applications, Tyler Richard Westover

Theses and Dissertations

As individual health monitors continue to become more widely adopted in helping individuals make informed decisions, new technologies need to be developed to obtain more biometric data. Spectroscopy is a well-known tool to gain biological information. Traditionally spectrometers are large and expensive making personal or wearable health monitors difficult. Here we present the development and characterization of a miniaturized short wavelength infrared spectrometer for wearable applications. We present a carbon nanotube parallel hole collimator can effectively select a narrow set of allowed angles of light to be separated by a linear variable filter and detected at a photodiode array making …

Multiscale Modeling And Analysis Of X-Ray Windows, Microcantilevers, And Bioimpedance Microelectrodes, Kyle Grant Larsen Aug 2022

Multiscale Modeling And Analysis Of X-Ray Windows, Microcantilevers, And Bioimpedance Microelectrodes, Kyle Grant Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

X-ray detector windows must be thin enough to transmit sufficient low-energy x-rays, yet strong enough to withstand up to an atmosphere of differential pressure. Traditional low-energy x-ray windows consist of a support layer and pressure membrane spanning that support. Numerical modeling of several x-ray windows was used to show that both low- and high-energy x-ray transmission can be improved by adding a secondary support structure. Finite element analysis of the x-ray window models showed that the stress from a typical applied load does not exceed the ultimate strength or yield strength of the respective materials. The specific x-ray window models …

Jack And Phil: Associations Between Exposure To Television Parents, Parental Stress And Efficacy, Jane Elizabeth Shawcroft Aug 2022

Jack And Phil: Associations Between Exposure To Television Parents, Parental Stress And Efficacy, Jane Elizabeth Shawcroft

Theses and Dissertations

Although parents in television are often depicted in negative patterns, little to no research has empirically examined the effect of viewing these depictions of parent efficacy and stress. The purpose of this study is to use experimental methods to assess the effect of viewing authoritative, authoritarian, and stereotypical depictions of parents in television on parental efficacy and parent stress. A sample of 122 parents of adolescents were randomly assigned to one of three condition groups: authoritarian, authoritative, and stereotypical. Each group watches a different clip from a television show, and then reported on their comparison of themselves against the parents …

When Helping Hurts: Validating A Measure Of Compulsive Helping And Exploring Potential Predictors, Katey L. Workman Aug 2022

When Helping Hurts: Validating A Measure Of Compulsive Helping And Exploring Potential Predictors, Katey L. Workman

Theses and Dissertations

Helping behavior is generally adaptive. However, optimal usage theory suggests that even helping might be taken to an unhealthy extreme, for example an individual serving someone to the extent that they neglect their own needs. Not a single dedicated measurement tool has been constructed to assess the tendency. Thus, the present study seeks to propose and validate a new measure of compulsive helping by assessing construct, convergent, and divergent validity. Using a sample (N=438) of emerging adults (Mage=20.29, SD=1.04, 51.71% Female) from the Flourishing Families Project, validity evidence supported the proposed measure, as well as convergent validity of the constructs …

Interprofessional Education For School-Based Settings, Brittney M. Mack Aug 2022

Interprofessional Education For School-Based Settings, Brittney M. Mack

Theses and Dissertations

Teamwork is essential to provide quality services to individuals with disabilities (Morrison & Gleddie, 2019). Deficits across a variety of domains make interprofessional practice even more crucial (Dobbs-Oates & Morris, 2016). Interprofessional education (IPE) provides preprofessionals the opportunity to gain experience collaborating with various disciplines, better preparing them for interprofessional practice (Anderson et al., 2011; Ruebling, et al., 2014). Most IPE research has been completed with preprofessionals engaged in medical cases. The existing evidence for IPE in school-based settings is limited, which creates a gap for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who are pursuing work in school-based settings. The first purpose of …

Considerations For And Development Of Sound Level Maps For The M16a4 Rifle, Reese D. Rasband Aug 2022

Considerations For And Development Of Sound Level Maps For The M16a4 Rifle, Reese D. Rasband

Theses and Dissertations

Small firearms can create sound levels exceeding the safe threshold of human hearing with even one shot. Understanding how the sound propagates will lead to better range and military drill design. This thesis describes errors associated with different predictive interpolation models for the M16A4. Before directly discussing potential sources of error, the thesis first seeks to validate the data acquired. This is done through waveform inspection with a focus on shot-to-shot consistency. Finding the standard deviation in level between a 10-shot volley provides a good baseline with which other sources of error can be compared to. For both peak and …

Has Covid-19 Affected Patenting In The United States?, Johnny Allen Cope Aug 2022

Has Covid-19 Affected Patenting In The United States?, Johnny Allen Cope

Theses and Dissertations

Scholars have studied how exogenous shocks affect innovation, yet the effects of COVID-19 on one measure of innovative activity, numbers of patent applications, are not well understood. This study looks at what effect disruptions related to COVID-19 have had on numbers of patent applications submitted by inventors in the United States. Using the Patent Examination Research Dataset from the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker, I examine how numbers of patent applications have changed in 2020 and what effect economic disruptions, health disruptions, and nonpharmaceutical interventions related to COVID-19 have had on numbers …

A Machine Learning Approach That Integrates Clinical Data And Ptm Proteomics Identifies A Mechanism Of Ack1 Activation And Stabilization In Cancer, Eranga Roshan Balasooriya Loku Balasooriyage Aug 2022

A Machine Learning Approach That Integrates Clinical Data And Ptm Proteomics Identifies A Mechanism Of Ack1 Activation And Stabilization In Cancer, Eranga Roshan Balasooriya Loku Balasooriyage

Theses and Dissertations

Identification of novel cancer driver mutations is crucial for targeted cancer therapy, yet a difficult task especially for low frequency drivers. To identify cancer driver mutations, we developed a machine learning (ML) model to predict cancer hotspots. Here, we applied the ML program to 32 non-receptor tyrosine kinases (NRTKs) and identified 36 potential cancer driver mutations, with high probability mutations in 10 genes, including ABL1, ABL2, JAK1, JAK3, and ACK1. ACK1 is a member of the poorly understood ACK family of NRTKs that also includes TNK1. Although ACK1 is an established oncogene and high-interest therapeutic target, the exact mechanism of …

Sequencing The Guts Out Of Covid-19; The Evolution Behind The Covid-19 Pandemic, Madelyn Purnell Aug 2022

Sequencing The Guts Out Of Covid-19; The Evolution Behind The Covid-19 Pandemic, Madelyn Purnell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The global COVID-19 pandemic has led to an urgent need for scalable methods for clinical diagnostics and tracking of virus variants. In this paper, we attempted a novel method of sequencing using Large Reverse Transcriptase-based cloning (LRTC). Although our methodology ended up not working due to high amount and fast degradation of RNA, we were able to sequence multiple variants of COVID-19 Positive samples from the BYU Student Health Center and 4 sewage samples to check for variant outbreaks in corresponding times. We were able to find several corresponding variants and track the progression of mutation in our local population.

Thriving In College: The Contribution Of Career Services To Student Success, Jodi M. Chowen Aug 2022

Thriving In College: The Contribution Of Career Services To Student Success, Jodi M. Chowen

Theses and Dissertations

Career services in higher education has a long history of supporting student development and post-graduation success (American Council on Education, 1937; Rayman, 1999; Dey & Cruzvergara, 2014). However, there is a dearth of research identifying specific connections between engagement with career services and student success. College student thriving has been established in previous studies as positively contributing to traditional measures of college student success, including intention to persist, grade point average, institutional fit and satisfaction, and self-reported learning gains (Schreiner, 2013). Examining the relationship of student experience with career services and thriving provides a new way to evaluate the contribution …

The current …

Introgression Or Incipient Speciation? Using Geometric Morphometrics And Gene Expression To Characterize Mouth Development In Larval June Sucker And Utah Sucker, Peter C. Searle Aug 2022

Introgression Or Incipient Speciation? Using Geometric Morphometrics And Gene Expression To Characterize Mouth Development In Larval June Sucker And Utah Sucker, Peter C. Searle

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding how biodiversity evolves is a major goal in evolutionary developmental biology because changes in developmental processes are tightly linked with evolutionary diversification. Heterochrony--alteration to the rate or timing of development--can significantly alter the appearance of descendant species. Heterochronic shifts in gene expression and associated morphological change may explain the morphological divergence between the threatened June sucker (Chasmistes liorus) and the sympatric Utah sucker (Catostomus ardens) in Utah Lake, UT, USA. June sucker are endemic to Utah Lake and have subterminal mouths adapted for pelagic feeding, while Utah sucker (Catostomus ardens) have ventral mouths adapted for benthic feeding. As larvae, …

Prosodic Modeling For Hymn Translation, Michael Abraham Peck Aug 2022

Prosodic Modeling For Hymn Translation, Michael Abraham Peck

Theses and Dissertations

Prosody is known in linguistics as the "suprasegmental" features of language such as syllable stress and intonation. It is also known in the fields of poetics and musicology with alternate definitions and modeling practices. Concepts of prosody are further compounded when considering prosodic phenomena throughout the languages of the world. While the resulting lack of a universal concept of prosody may be tolerable in such a variety of paradigms, there is one paradigm that requires a unified model of prosody. This is the paradigm of hymn translation, which requires prosodic features to align not only musically, poetically, and linguistically, but …

External Laryngeal Oscillation And Aerodynamic Measures Of Voice Onset: A Translational Study, Erik Mcleod Christensen Aug 2022

External Laryngeal Oscillation And Aerodynamic Measures Of Voice Onset: A Translational Study, Erik Mcleod Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine external laryngeal oscillation and its potential effects on phonation threshold pressure (PTP; cm H2O) and phonation threshold flow (PTF; L/sec). Measures of PTP and PTF have inherent limitations due to the nonlinear nature of phonation, influencing their clinical and experimental utility. This is true particularly for tracking relatively small changes in voice function because variability in the measure itself can be larger than that resulting from voice change. Elevated PTP and PTF are associated with a variety of voice disorders and correlate with self-reported vocal effort and fatigue. Prior studies involving silicone …

The primary computer task (with two levels of difficulty) involved making formatting changes to …

The Role Of Social Response To Disclosure In Relgious And Spiritual Coping And Recovery From Sexual Assault, Megan Wolfe Aug 2022

The Role Of Social Response To Disclosure In Relgious And Spiritual Coping And Recovery From Sexual Assault, Megan Wolfe

Theses and Dissertations

Many factors can discourage survivors of sexual assault from reporting their assaults. Even those survivors who disclose, their reporting experiences may not leave them feeling empowered or that they have received adequate support to begin the healing process after disclosure. Using a mixed methods approach, we examined the relationship between religious and spiritual coping strategies, the experience of social disclosure, and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM). We further used qualitative data examining the ways that participants used religious/spiritual coping strategies in response to the trauma of sexual …

The Association Of Psychotherapist Cultural Humility And Client Experiences And Outcomes In Psychotherapy: A Meta-Analysis, Lisa Michelle Scott Aug 2022

The Association Of Psychotherapist Cultural Humility And Client Experiences And Outcomes In Psychotherapy: A Meta-Analysis, Lisa Michelle Scott

Theses and Dissertations

Psychotherapist multicultural competence has been given increasing attention in the field of psychology since the 1970s. However, individuals and communities who are Black, Indigenous, or People of Color are still less likely to attend psychotherapy and often drop out earlier than White clients. These trends highlight the importance of the ongoing research on therapist multicultural competence. There are many multicultural competencies, however, the current study focuses on therapist cultural humility. Specifically, we systematically searched all the current research on the association between cultural humility and client experiences and outcomes in therapy. Our literature search yielded eight studies that met our …

High school yoga programs are gaining popularity throughout the United States. The many perceived benefits of such programs among adolescent groups have shown promising outcomes. This mixed-method evaluation of a high school yoga program aims to evaluate the effects of the program on student-reported stress, resilience, and academic outcomes. Program participants include high school students in yoga classes (n = 61) and comparison classes (n = 37), who completed pre- and post-measure surveys along with social validity measures. Overall findings showed a decrease in stress levels among yoga students compared to comparison students, which approached statistical significance, no significant differences …

To What Degree Does Martial Quality Predict Longevity? A Meta-Analysis Of Prospective Studies, Rachel E. Jensen Aug 2022

To What Degree Does Martial Quality Predict Longevity? A Meta-Analysis Of Prospective Studies, Rachel E. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Strong social relationships consistently predict the quality of both physical and mental health. Society commonly recognizes the marriage relationship as one of the most committed, enduring relationships. While marital status alone can strongly predict health, it appears that moderating factors exist in this association. The quality of one's marriage can have a greater effect on health than marital status alone. We conducted a meta-analysis examining the strength of the influence that marital quality has on physical health, specifically indicated by mortality rates. To identify relevant articles, we searched multiple online databases (Embase, Psycinfo, Family and Society Studies Worldwide, and Academic …

Long-Term Soil Fungal Community Recovery After Fire Is Impacted By Climate Change, Spencer Mcgee, Alyssa Tidwell, Erin Riggs, Hannah Veltkamp, Geoffrey Zahn Aug 2022

Long-Term Soil Fungal Community Recovery After Fire Is Impacted By Climate Change, Spencer Mcgee, Alyssa Tidwell, Erin Riggs, Hannah Veltkamp, Geoffrey Zahn

Western North American Naturalist

Though much is known about fungal importance to forest health, there is very little information about factors that impact recovery times of soil fungal communities after a fire. Soil samples were taken from burn sites within one ecotype of temperate coniferous forest in Utah over a 20-year chronosequence. Sites were selected from available historic burns and were similar in plant community structure, elevation, slope, and aspect. Fungal DNA from these samples was compared to soil from paired unburned sites nearby to measure community similarity and estimate soil fungal recovery rates. Differences between paired burned and unburned sites remained fairly stable …
