A Historical Study Of The Mormon Temple At Nauvoo, Illinois, Don F. Colvin

Theses and Dissertations

The Nauvoo Temple was a unique structure, one which symbolized "Mormonism" in the early period of its history. In its time, the temple stood as the chief structure of the city of Nauvoo. It rivaled all buildings in Illinois and the West during its brief history.

This study reviews the entire history of the temple, from when it was first contemplated until its fateful destruction, and beyond. It sheds light on the setting in which the great edifice was built. Nielson asserts that poets bridge the gap between subjective truth and objective truth. In looking at the place of poetry in the free world, the article explores what freedom means to the poet, ultimately claiming that freedom comes to the poet through owning his identity. This short piece is a response to the article in the same issue by Carlton Culmsee, "Poetry in the Free World."

The city experienced a peculiar economic and cultural boom not known elsewhere in the Mountain West or along the railroad due to the predominately Mormon population which now was imposed upon …

Poetry In The Free World, Carlton Culmsee Jan 1962

Poetry In The Free World, Carlton Culmsee

BYU Studies

Since the time of the Reformation there have been incredible advances in scientific understanding and technological development. This change signaled a change in Western values, from the subjective to the objective. After hundreds of years, this cultural shift is creating a modern sense of despair. The author calls upon poets to fight the "cult of objectivity" in order to help the world reach another age in which they delight in the subjective and the spiritual.

Many contemporary accounts, from members of the Church and others including Governor Ford of Illinois, tell of Joseph's prophecies and plans to move westward. In March 1844, Joseph organized a General Council, or the Council of Fifty, whose immediate responsibility was to plan the Saints' exodus. In the last few months of his life, Joseph was increasingly focused on the journey to the Great Basin. After the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, the General Council, led by Brigham Young, made preparations for the Saints' …

The Differential Effects Of Bases For Moral Behavior And Major Field Of Study Upon Moral Judgment, Ray Edgar Paskett Jan 1960

The Differential Effects Of Bases For Moral Behavior And Major Field Of Study Upon Moral Judgment, Ray Edgar Paskett

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the individual's bases for moral behavior and his major field of study are related to his moral judgement. Previous studies have indicated that the effect of certain moral education programs was either negligible or detrimental to the accomplishment of their objectives. Because of the emphasis by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints upon fundamental principles as determinants of moral behavior, it seems appropriate to examine the effects of these concepts upon the individual.

A Comprehensive Comparison Of Christ's Teachings On The Doctrine Of Fasting And The Ancient And Present Day Practices Thereof, Alan P. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

A survey questionnaire was sent to 254 churches in the United States. An analysis of the answers of those giving a positive reply indicates that a great apostasy has taken place regarding the true Christian fast. Only a few small, independent churches seem to even approach Christ's ordained fast.

It is claimed that great health benefits arise from wise periodic fasting. A physiological section analyzes the effects of fasting.

A historical section presents the most important teachings and happenings of Gandhi, early reformers and practioneers, native races of America, U.S. presidents and state governments, early Christian history, and all large …
