Mormon Poor Relief: A Social Welfare Interlude, Betty L. Barton
Mormon Poor Relief: A Social Welfare Interlude, Betty L. Barton
BYU Studies
There has been considerable scholarship about the law of consecration in the early days of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and about the more recent Church welfare plan, but there has been relatively little written about Mormon welfare in the period roughly between 1850 and 1930. Many of the early pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley faced starvation, so President Brigham Young created public works projects in order to give people jobs, acting under the belief that it is better to help people help themselves than to simply give them handouts. Unlike much of American society of …

Heritage, Johannes Knudsen
Heritage, Johannes Knudsen
The Bridge
The term "heritage" brings up associations of "heredity" and this again reminds us of genes and the genetic code. Heritage in this sense is terribly important. We are programmed by our genes. Our appearance and condition are pre-determined in many ways, ranging from the color of our eyes to the state of our health and the potential of our mind, and including negative as well as positive features. Genetic heritage can be a blessing and it can be a burden. It has the greatest significance for the individual, but is also an important corporate factor. Ethnic groups have genetic features …

The Bridge
Elfrida Jensen, born September 13, 1886, in Horsens, Denmark, came to Seattle with her parents ca. 1904. Within a short time she had a role in a Danish play presented by the Danish Young Peoples Society "Dagmar". Her association with this Danish Dramatic Club (later called Harmonien) lasted a lifetime. Besides playing the lead roles in many Danish plays, "Frida", as she became called, wrote and adapted scripts, wrote songs and poems in Danish and English for the stage in Washington Hall in Seattle and for parties and wedding anniversaries.
Parental Control Of Children's Television: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Control And Family Home Evening, Marion Wixom Mccardell
Parental Control Of Children's Television: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Control And Family Home Evening, Marion Wixom Mccardell
Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to examine the relationship between a secular behavior—television control—and a religious one—Family Home Evening. The findings show that there is a relationship, with those having favorable attitudes toward Family Home Evening and those who hold casual FHE's being most inclined to exercise positive control over their children's television viewing.
Host-Induced Morphological Variations In The Strigeoid Trematode Posthodiplostomum Minimum (Trematoda: Diplostomatidae). Iv. Organs Of Reproduction (Ovary And Testes), Vitelline Gland, And Egg, James R. Palmieri
Great Basin Naturalist
A variety of amphibian, reptilian, avian, and mammalian hosts were used in experimental development of Posthodiplostomum minimum. Results of this study indicate that the organs of reproduction (testes and ovary) as well as the vitelline gland and egg underwent host-induced morphological variations. Due to the lack of host specificity of P. minimum as well as the overlap of reported egg and body sizes of species of Posthodiplostomum, it is apparent that several reported species are not valid.

Algal Response To A Thermal Effluent : Study Of A Power Station On The Provo River, Utah, Usa, Lorin E. Squires
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of a thermal effluent on the attached algae of the Provo River, Utah, USA, was studied from 1975 to 1977. Data for macroscopic and microscopic algae were collected and analyzed. Diatoms, Cladophora glomerata, and Hydrurus foetidus dominated the flora. The thermal effluent significantly affected the algal flora in a section of river 100 to 135 meters long immediately below the discharge point. Cladophora growth was increased and Hydrurus was absent in this area. In addition, diatom production was often higher and diversity lower than in the rest of the river. Community structure was unique from all other adjacent …

Host-Induced Morphological Variations In The Strigeoid Trematode Posthodiplostomum Minimum (Trematoda: Diplostomatidae). Iii. Organs Of Attachment, James R. Palmieri
Great Basin Naturalist
A variety of amphibian, reptilian, avian, and mammalian hosts were used in experimental development of Posthodiplostomum minimum. As a result of this study much host-induced morphological variation was noted in several organs of attachment. Variations in the oral sucker ranged from a well-developed muscular organ to a weakly developed oral slit. Acetabular development ranged from well-developed to reduced forms lacking apical musculature, tegumental spines, and sensory structures. The holdfast organ showed marked reduction in most poikilothermic hosts.
The Synthesis Of Novel Macrocyclic Multidentate Compounds From Dioxodioic Acids (1), R. Elliott Asay
The Synthesis Of Novel Macrocyclic Multidentate Compounds From Dioxodioic Acids (1), R. Elliott Asay
Theses and Dissertations
A series of novel macrocyclic multidentate crown compounds have been prepared from a series of dioxodioic acids. The dioxodioic acids were prepared by treating various oligoethylene glycols or amines with maleic, succinic, citraconic, and glutaric anhydrides. The crown compounds were then synthesized from the dioxodioic acid chlorides obtained from the diacids and various oligoethylene glycols or ethylene diamine.

Phlox Longifolia Nuttall (Polemoniaceae) Complex Of North America, Frederick J. Peabody
Theses and Dissertations
Over 1,000 herbarium specimens including 24 type specimens were examined in an attempt to achieve a clearer understanding of the Phlox longifolia complex. Four variables were measured for each specimen and the data were statistically analyzed by disciminant analysis. Using a previously published system of classification for the complex approximately 73% of the measured variation among the specimens was accounted for by that system. The clustering patterns produced in this first analysis indicated that a more conservative approach would be advisable. The formulataion and subsequent application of a modified system produced a grouping of specimens that accounted for 95% of …

Host-Induced Morphological Variations In The Strigeoid Trematode Posthodiplostomum Minimum (Trematoda: Diplostomatidae). Ii. Body Measurements And Tegument Modifications, James R. Palmieri
Great Basin Naturalist
Extensive feeding experiments were undertaken to determine if physiological host specificity was a major characteristic of Posthodiplostomum minimum. This involved the feeding of experimentally infected sunfish livers containing metacercariae of P. minimum to amphibian, reptilian, avian and mammalian hosts. Host-induced morphological variations of adult P. minimum were shown to be associated with the genus and class of host employed as well as with the inherent variability of P. minimum exclusive of host factors. Morphological characters such as body size and shape and tegumental surface and spines are indicated as undergoing morphological variation. Of all the experimental definitive hosts used, avian …

The Subfamily Anomiopsyllinae (Hystrichopsyllidae: Siphonaptera). I. A Revision Of The Genus Anomiopsyllus Baker, A. M. Barnes, V. J. Tipton, J. A. Wildie
Great Basin Naturalist
In this taxonomic revision of the Nearctic flea genus Anomiopsyllus Baker morphological characters, phylogeny, affinities with other genera in the subfamily Anomiopsyllinae, evolutionary adaptations, geographic distribution, ecological parameters, and host preferences are discussed. Characters primarily associated with the male genitalia, in particular the number and placement of spiniforms on the movable process (finger) of the clasper, are used for species discrimination. A key to the males of the 15 species and subspecies is provided, including illustrations of both males and females.

The Life Cycle Of Hydroperla Crosbyi (Plecoptera: Perlodidae), Reed Y. Oberndorfer, Kenneth W. Stewart
Great Basin Naturalist
Hydroperla crosbyi in Texas exhibited a univoltine, fast life cycle over the three-year study period. Adults emerged in February–March when mean daily stream temperature reached ca. 15 C. Reared females in the lab deposited up to three egg masses. Mean fecundity of dissected females was 787 eggs/female. Oviposition in the field was observed and described.
Eggs were triangular in cross section, brown, and measured 400 µm × 535 µm. They underwent an ca. seven-month diapause until mean daily stream temperature decreased to 18 C. Eyespots appeared, and hatching followed in two to three weeks. First instar nymphs were measured and …

Environmental Interaction In Summer Algal Communities Of Utah Lake, Mark C. Whiting
Environmental Interaction In Summer Algal Communities Of Utah Lake, Mark C. Whiting
Theses and Dissertations
Utah Lake is a shallow eutrophic lake located in central Utah. It is characterized by high nutrient and silt loads and by large algal blooms in late summer and early fall. Phytoplankton samples and environmental data were taken from June through August 1974. Phytoplankton species were identified and then quantified in a Palmer counting cell. Environmental continuum theory was employed to describe algal succession and regression analysis was used to discover interactions between algal communities and the environment. Phytoplankton communities in June were characterized by high species diversity. As the lake environment became stressed in late summer due to higher …
Isolation, Purification, Scanning Electron Microscopy And Bacterial Dna Uptake Of Plant Protoplasts, Bronwyn G. Hughes
Isolation, Purification, Scanning Electron Microscopy And Bacterial Dna Uptake Of Plant Protoplasts, Bronwyn G. Hughes
Theses and Dissertations
Protoplasts were isolated from tobacco and barley leaves in sucrose or mannitol using commercially available cellulases and macerozymes. Barley growth and protoplast isolation and purification conditions were optimized so that protoplasts were obtained in high yields free of unwanted debris and organelles. A technique for processing barley and tobacco protoplasts for examination by scanning electron microscopy was developed in which protoplasts seem to have maintained their structural integrity. Barley and tobacco protoplasts took up 3H-B. subtilis DNA, 125I-B. subtilis DNA or 125I-M. luteus DNA as a linear function of time (0-6 hr) and DNA concentration (0-200 μg/ml). Up to 16 …

Partitioning Of Space And Time By The Western Jumping Mouse, Zapus Princeps Utahensis Hall, John M. Deacon
Theses and Dissertations
Intraspecific competition is important in determining habitat utilization by members of a single species. Effective use of habitat may involve partitioning the available resources: space, time and food among individuals of different age, sex, and/or reproductive state. Numerous publications deal with interspecific competition (McCloskey and Fieldwick 1975, Cody 1973, Rosenzweig 1973, Stewart and Levin 1973, Gaby 1972, Brown 1971, Koshkina 1971, Sheppe 1967, Caldwell and Gentry 1965, Cameron 1964, Clough 1964, Gause 1932), but little has been written on intraspecific competition among populations of organisms in nature.
Cattail Decline At Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area, Christine Minton Anderson
Cattail Decline At Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area, Christine Minton Anderson
Great Basin Naturalist
For the last seven years, 1969 to 1976, a steady decline of cattails (Typha latifolia L.) has been observed at Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area, Davis County, Utah. Several parameters of Farmington Bay's environment that could cause or enhance a decline of the marshland vegetation were studied. These parameters included temperature, pH, phenols, oil and grease, heavy metals, fungus pathogens, and salt water intrusion from the Great Salt Lake. Elevated soluble salt concentrations were found to be responsible for the decline. Cattails are weakened or killed when they are exposed to soluble salt concentrations greater than 5.0 gm/liter, and …
