Matrimony And Change In Webster's The Duchess Of Malfi, Margaret L. Mikesell Jan 1981

Matrimony And Change In Webster's The Duchess Of Malfi, Margaret L. Mikesell

Quidditas

Profound changes occurred in the institution of marriage during the Renaissance. Love was gradually replacing fiscal and dynastic considerations as the foundation considered crucial for a binding union. The love marriage was largely a middle-class phenomenon, born of the changing relationship between the family and the state, articulated and refined by Protestant divines, and diffused through aristocratic society. Drama of the period is much concerned with this shift. The bourgeois conjunction of love and marriage triumphs in the aristocratic societies of many a romantic comedy. The weddings at play's end promise a new social order. The disintegration of the old …

The American Career Of Henry Bouquet, 1755-1765, Louis M. Waddell Jan 1981

The American Career Of Henry Bouquet, 1755-1765, Louis M. Waddell

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

It has not been our good fortune to experience this afternoon the bright invigorating October day I had anticipated. I wanted to introduce Henry Bouquet by a reference to his reliance on the beautiful October climate as he fearlessly marched fifteen hundred soldiers into dangerous Indian lands in Ohio, in 1764. Bouquet relied on the clear dry weather to speed his march, and on the absence of foliage to protect his men from any surprise attacks like the one that had decimated General Edward Braddock's military column, of roughly the same size, at a crossing of the Monongahela River on …

In Memoriam Michael Hoffman (+1908), Christian B. Hoffman

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Michael Hoffman was born at Altendorf, Canton St. Gallen, Switzerland, on December 15, 1837. He died at his home near New Basel, Dickinson County, Kansas. It is a far reach from the mountains of the little republic to the great central plains, the very heart of the great republic. The life, the struggles and hardships, the hopes and ambitions and the accomplishments of this man are typical of the development of our country.

The Bridge

This short book tells the reader what life was like for one young man in a small village in Denmark in the first two decades of this century. As the author writes in the Foreword: " it is a collection of reminiscences, a mosaic of people and places seen from a long distance, both geographically and chronologically." This sensitive sketch of a childhood and adolescence in the first two decades of the twentieth century will make all readers aware of the monumental changes in the world from then until now. While many of the individual behaviors can be related to …

Clinton Larson's "The Witness": The Quest For A Mormon Mythic Consciousness, Dennis R. Perry Jan 1981

Clinton Larson's "The Witness": The Quest For A Mormon Mythic Consciousness, Dennis R. Perry

Theses and Dissertations

"The Witness" can be viewed as Clinton F. Larson's poetic manifesto that points the direction for much of his subsequent work. Although his poetic "mormonism" has been questioned by several of his critics, this thesis shows that Larson definitely expresses his Mormon faith in "The Witness" as a metaphorical quest for mythic consciousness. While searching in the poem for sacred space and time, Larson seeks to become closer to the divine and powerful center of being, creating at once a metaphor for his quest to understand and assimilate Christ's atonement and a poetic voice from which he can speak for …

Flood Frequency And The Assemblage Of Dispersal Types In Hanging Gardens Of The Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah, George P. Malanson, Jeanne Kay Dec 1980

Flood Frequency And The Assemblage Of Dispersal Types In Hanging Gardens Of The Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah, George P. Malanson, Jeanne Kay

Great Basin Naturalist

Hanging gardens of the Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah, are plant communities growing at permanent seeps on the canyon walls. The gardens are isolated from each other and from other plant communities by vertical expanses of sandstone. Gardens consist mostly of herbaceous species less than 1 m tall. Though not individually species-rich, the hanging gardens are diverse as a group, and very dissimilar.

This study considers two explanations of the heterogeneous distribution of species in hanging gardens. The assemblages of dispersal types in gardens of different spatial attributes and disturbance frequencies are examined. The GH statistic, a log likelihood …

The Book Of Job And The Modern View Of Depression, Morton Allan Kapusta, Solomon Frank Oct 1980

The Book Of Job And The Modern View Of Depression, Morton Allan Kapusta, Solomon Frank

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

The Biblical Book of Job is a wisdom book. Wisdom, in this context, refers to the intellectual discipline taught by the sages of ancient Israel to provide professionals with a realistic approach to the problems of life. Chapter 30 of the Book of Job is a key-index of ideas that, if followed through the book, discloses a modern scientifically accurate description of a depression that, at times, was life-threatening. There are practical clinical clues to distinguish between normal mourning and depression, as well as aids to the differential diagnosis of somatic symptoms that may arise from depression. A timeless model …

Mineral Compostition Of Atriplex Hymenelytra Growing In The Northern Mojave Desert, A. Wallace, E. M. Romney, R. B. Hunter, J. E. Kinnear, G. V. Alexander Oct 1980

Mineral Compostition Of Atriplex Hymenelytra Growing In The Northern Mojave Desert, A. Wallace, E. M. Romney, R. B. Hunter, J. E. Kinnear, G. V. Alexander

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Fifty samples of Atriplex hymenelytra (Torr.) S. Wats, were collected from several different locations in southern Nevada and California to test variability in mineral composition. Only Na, V, P. Ca, Mg, Mn, and Sr in the samples appeared to represent a uniform population resulting in normal curves for frequency distribution. Even so, about 40 percent of the variance for these elements was due to location. All elements differed enough with location so that no element really represented a uniform population. The coefficient of variation for most elements was over 40 percent and one was over 100 percent. The proportion of …

Parent Material Which Produces Saline Outcrops As A Factor In Differential Distribution Of Perennial Plants In The Northern Mojave Desert, A. Wallace, E. M. Romney, R. A. Wood, A. A. El-Ghonemy, S. A. Bamberg Oct 1980

Parent Material Which Produces Saline Outcrops As A Factor In Differential Distribution Of Perennial Plants In The Northern Mojave Desert, A. Wallace, E. M. Romney, R. A. Wood, A. A. El-Ghonemy, S. A. Bamberg

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

An area of 0.46 km2 divided into six zones in the northern Mojave Desert transitional with the Great Basin Desert has been studied. Diversity is high among the perennial plant species within the 0.46 km2 area. Common species for the two deserts that are present in the area studied are Atriplex confertifolia (Torr. & Frem.) S.Wats., Ceratoides lanata (Pursh) J. T. Howell, Grayia spinosa (Hook.) Moq., Ephedra nevadensis S. Wats. Some other species present include Lycium andersonii A. Gray, Lycium pallidum Miers, Ambrosia dumosa (A. Gray) Payne., Larrea tridentata (Sesse & Moc. ex DC) Cov., Acamptopappus shockleyi A. …

Multivariate Analysis Of The Vegetation In A Two-Desert Interface, A. A. El-Ghonemy, A. Wallace, E. M. Romney

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

This report further describes the distribution and ecological characteristics of the natural vegetation at the Mojave Desert-Great Basin Desert interface. The region studied is one of extraordinary biological interest because of its geographic location straddling the boundaries of two large deserts of the western United States, and because of the kind and manner of its past land use (atmospheric and underground testing of nuclear devices). The present analysis determines the magnitude of variations in the phytosociological structure in this region and evaluates some relationships between its vegetation and environment. Vegetation and soils were sampled in 66 stands representing many possible …

Transpiration And Co2 Fixation Of Selected Desert Shrubs As Related To Soil-Water Potential, S. B. Clark, J. Letey Jr., O. R. Lunt, A. Wallace, G. E. Kleinkopf, E. M. Romney Oct 1980

Transpiration And Co2 Fixation Of Selected Desert Shrubs As Related To Soil-Water Potential, S. B. Clark, J. Letey Jr., O. R. Lunt, A. Wallace, G. E. Kleinkopf, E. M. Romney

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

In desert plants, transpiration rates decreased before photosynthetic rates when plants were entering a period of water stress. This may have adaptive consequences. A difference of -5 bars in the soil-moisture potential had considerable importance in reducing the rate of transpiration. In Helianthus annuus L. (sunflower) the photosynthetic rate decreased before the transpiration rate in contrast to Great Basin-Mojave Desert plants, and the changes occurred with a -1 bar difference in soil-moisture potential. Morphological changes in three desert plant species [Artemisia tridentata Nutt., Ambrosia dumosa (Gray) Payne, Larrea tridentata (Ses. Moc. ex DC) Cov.] as the soil-moisture potential decreased …

The Challenge Of A Desert: Revegetation Of Disturbed Desert Lands, A. Wallace, E. M. Romney, R. B. Hunter Oct 1980

The Challenge Of A Desert: Revegetation Of Disturbed Desert Lands, A. Wallace, E. M. Romney, R. B. Hunter

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

The revegetation of disturbed, arid lands is one of the great challenges of a desert. An attempt to encourage it is not an impossible task, however, if the natural and the man-made resources available are utilized and managed. Where rainfall and temperature conditions approach or exceed those of the Great Basin desert, restoration of disturbed land will occur through natural revegetation processes within a reasonable period of time. This is not generally the case in the more arid Mojave Desert areas where the moisture and temperature conditions are less favorable for germination and seedling survival. Restoration of vegetation by natural …
