"The Mundane And The Transcendent: Excerpts From Letters Of Johannes & Clorinda Schmutz, 1900-1902", Richard Schmutz

Swiss American Historical Society Review

It isn't often that a hoard of old letters comes unexpectedly into a family's possession, but it happened in my family a few years ago at the passing of an uncle. Unknown to other descendants he had in his keeping a collection of letters that his parents--my paternal grandparents--exchanged during a proselyting mission grandfather served in Switzerland for his church, 1900-1902. A short while after uncle's funeral, the letters were entrusted by his spouse to my sister and copies have since become available to family members and taken their rightful place of importance in the family legacy.

The Swiss In Utah: An Introduction, Douglas F. Tobler Feb 1998

The Swiss In Utah: An Introduction, Douglas F. Tobler

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Beginning in the mid-18.SOs, Swiss immigrants, virtually all converts from early successful Mormon proselyting in their homeland, began arriving in the Utah Territory. They became part of two larger immigrant streams: one composed of thousands--by the year 1900, some 115,000--of . fellow Swiss who, beginning in colonial times, had found new homes in the United States; and the other, the so-called "Gathering to Zion," the organized emigration of thousands of European Mormon converts, mostly from Protestant countries, in the last half of the nineteenth and the first decades of the twentieth century.

Randomly Amplified Polymorphic Dna Analysis (Rapd) Of Artemisia Subgenus Tridentatae Species And Hybrids, E. Durant Mcarthur, Joann Mudge, Renée Van Buren, W. Ralph Andersen, Stewart C. Sanderson, David G. Babbel Jan 1998

Randomly Amplified Polymorphic Dna Analysis (Rapd) Of Artemisia Subgenus Tridentatae Species And Hybrids, E. Durant Mcarthur, Joann Mudge, Renée Van Buren, W. Ralph Andersen, Stewart C. Sanderson, David G. Babbel

Great Basin Naturalist

Species of Artemisia (subgenus Tridentatae) dominate much of western North America. The genetic variation that allows this broad ecological adaptation is facilitated by hybridization and polyploidization. Three separate studies were performed in this group using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Fifty-seven 10-mer primers generated nearly 400 markers from genomic DNA obtained from leaf tissue. These studies were (1) a measure of the variability of plants within and between populations and between subspecies using 5 A. tridentata ssp. wyomingensis populations, 2 A. cana ssp. cana populations, and 1 A. cana ssp. viscidula population; (2) an examination of the hypothesis that …

Bitterbrush (Purshia Tridentata Pursh) Growth In Relation To Browsing, Carl L. Wambolt, W. Wyatt Fraas, Michael R. Frisina Jan 1998

Bitterbrush (Purshia Tridentata Pursh) Growth In Relation To Browsing, Carl L. Wambolt, W. Wyatt Fraas, Michael R. Frisina

Great Basin Naturalist

The objectives of this study were to compare vegetative and reproductive growth characters of bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata Pursh) stands as they relate to browsing levels. Growth characters were measured on 10 ecologically diverse stands in southwestern Montana on which browsing ranged from 0% to 60% of all current annual long shoot (LS) growth. Bitterbrush plants exhibited both twig-level and plant-level responses to browsing. Total bud density per plant was similar for browsed and unbrowsed sites, but differed (P < 0.01) between browsed and unbrowsed twigs. Browsed twigs produced one-half the leaf cluster density produced by unbrowsed twigs. No significant (P < 0.05) relationship between browsing levels on browsed plants and bud densities was found. Length of old-growth twigs per plant was shorter (P < 0.001) on browsed sites than on unbrowsed sites. Burning at 2 environmentally paired sites reduced flower bud density (P < 0.001) 9 and 10 growing seasons later although LS length was not affected. Growth of LS showed a site-by-year interaction (P < 0.05). Our data suggest that long-term unbrowsed plants should not be used as a standard for comparison with normally browsed plants.

Regional Assessment Of Wadable Streams In Idaho, Usa, Christopher T. Robinson, G. Wayne Minshall Jan 1998

Regional Assessment Of Wadable Streams In Idaho, Usa, Christopher T. Robinson, G. Wayne Minshall

Great Basin Naturalist

There has been a resurgence in applying bioassessment techniques for evaluating and monitoring the biological integrity of stream ecosystems. In all cases biological metrics have been refined to account for regional variation in aquatic habitats and fauna. This study evaluated environmental and macroinvertebrate properties for wadable streams in 3 major ecoregions of Idaho: Northern Basin and Range, Snake River Plain, and Northern Rocky Mountain. These 3 ecoregions constitute > 80% of the land area in Idaho. Reference streams were delineated from test streams in each ecoregion using standard habitat assessment protocols (Plafkin et al. 1989). Multiple discriminant analysis effectively determined habitat …

The Bridge

"A most desired place for Danish folks to settle." That

keynote launched the campaign to attract Danes to Junction

City. Who was the herald? What were the tidings?

The records are not particularly informative about A. C.

to refer to him. According to his great-grandson, Alfred

Christensen, his first name was Andreas and his middle

name was Christian, both common names in Denmark.

Oral Performances As Ritual: Animating The Invisible In Mormon Women's Miscarriage Stories, Kristin Leifson Ballif Jan 1998

Oral Performances As Ritual: Animating The Invisible In Mormon Women's Miscarriage Stories, Kristin Leifson Ballif

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is comprised of ten Mormon women's miscarriage stories and it is their stories that are used as the text for my analysis. The purpose of the study is to provide a space for these women to share their experiences and to reveal their cultural values and beliefs. Because the women are all Mormon, there are some distinctive cultural and religious values that are shared within their stories and it is these aspects that are analyzed and discussed within the text.

Women need to be able to share their miscarriage stories so as to alleviate feelings of isolation and …

Building The Imagined Community: Dominican Exempla And Theological Knowledge, Andrea L. Winkler Jan 1998

Building The Imagined Community: Dominican Exempla And Theological Knowledge, Andrea L. Winkler

Quidditas

During the thirteenth century, preachers considered sermons to be among the most important methods of communicating written material to the unlettered. Within a sermon, the use of exempla—short stories used to illustrate a moral point—was a primary means of disseminating theological information, and throughout the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the number of exempla compilations intended as preaching aids increased markedly. Exempla collectors such as Caesarius of Heisterbach and Stephen of Bourbon shared and re-used stories to disseminate theological knowledge. Despite the communal nature of exempla, individual stories were more than unidirectional theological transmissions or stock tales repeated with …

John Skelton's "Agenst Garnesche": Poetic Territorialism, At The Court Of Henry Viii, Victor I. Scherb

Quidditas

John Skelton's 1514 flyting "Agenst Garnesche" has been subject to little critical scrutiny. This neglect can perhaps be attributed to the fact that Christopher Garnesche's contribution is missing, but it is also characteristic of the relative neglect accorded to the flyting as a genre, a neglect that has also colored the interpretation of many of Skelton's more abusive poems. One critic, for example, has dismissed the poem as being "nothing but personal abuse of a particularly virulent type . . . adorned with a singular collection of epithets and incomprehensible allusions, which serve only to befog and irritate the reader." …

Labor Market Responses To Rising Health Insurance Costs: Evidence On Hours Worked, David M. Cutler, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 1998

Labor Market Responses To Rising Health Insurance Costs: Evidence On Hours Worked, David M. Cutler, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

Increases in the cost of providing health insurance must have some effect on labor markets, either in lower wages, changes in the composition of employment, or both. Despite a presumption that most of this effect will be in the fonn of lower wages, we document in this paper a significant effect on work hours as well. Using data from the CPS and the SIPP, we show that rising health insurance costs over the 1980s increased the hours worked of those with health insurance by up to 3 percent. We argue that this occurs because health insurance is a fixed cost, …

Family Generativity And Generative Counseling: Helping Families Keep Faith With The Next Generation, David C. Dollahite, Brent D. Slife, Alan J. Hawkins Jan 1998

Family Generativity And Generative Counseling: Helping Families Keep Faith With The Next Generation, David C. Dollahite, Brent D. Slife, Alan J. Hawkins

Faculty Publications

Counselors who are concerned with strengthening and healing relationships between generations can draw on the concept of generativity to assist them. This chapter invites counselors to grant a more prominent place for generativity in clinical work with families by (a) presenting the concept of family generativity as a logical extension of the generativity concept and (b) presenting some initial ideas on the new approach to clinical work designed to help families develop and sustain family generativity, which we call generative counseling. Generative counseling is illustrated by use of a clinical example, which is introduced briefly in a subsequent section …

Intentional Changes In Sound Pressure Level And Rate: Their Impact On Measures Of Respiration, Phonation, And Articulation, Christopher Dromey, Lorraine Olson Ramig Jan 1998

Intentional Changes In Sound Pressure Level And Rate: Their Impact On Measures Of Respiration, Phonation, And Articulation, Christopher Dromey, Lorraine Olson Ramig

Faculty Publications

The purpose of the study was to compare the effects of changing sound pressure level (SPL) and rate on respiratory, phonatory, and articulatory behavior during sentence production. Ten subjects, 5 men and 5 women, repeated the sentence, "I sell a sapapple again," under 5 SPL and 5 rate conditions. From a multi-channel recording, measures were made of lung volume (LV), SPL, fundamental frequency (F0), semitone standard deviation (STSD), and upper and lower lip displacements and peak velocities. Loud speech led to increases in LV initiation, LV termination, F0, STSD, and articulatory displacements and peak velocities for both lips. Token-to-token variability …

Approximations Of Open Quotient And Speed Quotient From Glottal Airflow And Egg Waveforms: Effects Of Measurement Criteria And Sound Pressure Level, Christopher Dromey, Christine M. Sapienza, Elaine T. Stathopoulos

Faculty Publications

Summary: Noninvasive measures of vocal fold activity are useful for describing normal and disordered voice production. Measures of open and speed quotient from glottal airflow and electroglottographic (EGG) waveforms have been used to describe timing events associated with vocal fold vibration. To date, there has been little consistency in the measurement criteria used to calculate quotient values. In this study, criteria of 20% and 50% were applied to the AC amplitude of glottal airflow and inverted EGG waveforms for measurement of open quotient. Criteria of 20%, 50%, and 80%, and a midslope criterion that segmented the waveform between 20% and …

Dear Father, Rochelle A. Fankhauser Jan 1998

Dear Father, Rochelle A. Fankhauser

Theses and Dissertations

Dear Father is a memoir of one year of the life of Shelly Fankhauser. Experiencing the death of her grandfather and husband, she is forced to reexamine her basic belief system as a New Zealand Maori LDS woman. Through her losses and the process of her grief, she discovers the identity that she was struggling to find did not come from her culture or her religion as she had once thought, but from within herself.

Dear Father is an autobiographical account of finding inner strength and discovering hope.

Parental Divorce And Lds Young Adult Attitudes Toward Marriage And Family Life, Sarah D. Finney Jan 1998

Parental Divorce And Lds Young Adult Attitudes Toward Marriage And Family Life, Sarah D. Finney

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the influence of parental divorce on the attitudes of young adult members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) toward marriage and family life. A sample of 180 students from three universities completed self-report questionnaires measuring various attitudes toward aspects of marriage and family life. The results indicated that parental divorce alone was not a significant predictor (p.≤.05) of young adults' attitudes toward marriage and family life. The one difference found was that young adults' coming from divorced families-of-origin were less attracted to the idea of commitment and sacrifice involved in a marriage …

President Mrs. Kimball: A Rhetoric Of Words And Works, Janelle M. Higbee Jan 1998

President Mrs. Kimball: A Rhetoric Of Words And Works, Janelle M. Higbee

Theses and Dissertations

Scholars of rhetoric and speech communications have suggested that the study of a women's rhetoric should focus on the "distinctly female modes of leadership" that may be found among women in "out-groups" that challenge established political authority. Such leaders must be especially inventive to be effective, and are thus likely to be talented rhetoricians. In looking for such leaders, the religious and political rhetoric of early Latter-day Saint women provides a noteworthy, unique study. Nineteenth-century Mormon women not only battled discriminatory political norms—arguing fervently for both universal woman's suffrage and for the freedom to practice polygamy—they did so from their …

Utopian Marriage In Nineteenth-Century America: Public And Private Discourse, Brenda Olsen Andrus Jan 1998

Utopian Marriage In Nineteenth-Century America: Public And Private Discourse, Brenda Olsen Andrus

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of utopian discourse about marriage in mid-nineteenth-century America. Although utopian communities are usually approached within the fields of history and sociology, a rhetorical analysis adds to the discussion by uncovering the discursive complexity of marriage beliefs within a rapidly changing culture. Discursive features of the Shaker, Oneida Community and Latter-day Saint texts are outlined and compared according to the following format:

Chapter One examines the textures of conflict within the dominant culture's views of marriage and gender roles in nineteenth-century America, with a brief overview of reform efforts of the day. This chapter provides …

The Relation Between The Nutritional Status And The Acute Respiratory Infections In Children Younger Than Five Years Of Age In The Indigenous, Black, And Mestizo Ethnic Groups Of The Rural Area In The Imbabura Province, 1998-1999, Sandra Chiles

Theses and Dissertations

The problems of social-economics, culture, politics, and health, among those, are factors that influence both directly and indirectly the style of life of hundreds of thousands of people, due to the lack of economic resources, unemployment, poverty, their own culture can lead to a more serious state of health, consequently causing problems of their nutritional state, such as obesity in its varying degrees of malnutrition, in addition to the presence of preventable illnesses such as acute respiratory disease (IRA), that seriously affect the infant population. Factors, consequences, everything becomes one vicious circle that can be broken thereby preventing more deaths …

The Book Of Margery Kempe: Religious Discourse And The Carnivalesque Woman, Kathryn Summers Jan 1998

The Book Of Margery Kempe: Religious Discourse And The Carnivalesque Woman, Kathryn Summers

Quidditas

Both during her lifetime and since the full manuscript of her forceful autobiography was discovered, no one has quite known what to do with Margery Kempe. Even her staunchest contemporary supporters occasionally lost patience with her or worried that they had inadvertently allied themselves with the wrong side in the divine conflict. Margery followed all the conventional Christian forms: she passed repeated ecclesiastical trials for orthodoxy with flying colors; she went on all the right pilgrimages; she said numberless prayers and took countless communions; even her crying fits and most of her visions have been shown to reflect the experiences …
