Estimates Of The Incidence Of Mistletoes In Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands Of The Coconino National Forest, Arizona, Carolyn M. Daugherty, Robert L. Mathiasen Aug 2003

Estimates Of The Incidence Of Mistletoes In Pinyon-Juniper Woodlands Of The Coconino National Forest, Arizona, Carolyn M. Daugherty, Robert L. Mathiasen

Western North American Naturalist

The relative incidence of mistletoes found in pinyon-juniper woodlands is estimated for the Coconino National Forest, Arizona, using a roadside survey. Approximately 50% of the pinyon-juniper woodlands surveyed were infested with juniper mistletoes (Phoradendron juniperinum or P. capitellatum). In contrast, only about 12% of the areas surveyed were infested with pinyon dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium divaricatum). In these infested woodlands, 70% with juniper mistletoes and 44% with pinyon dwarf mistletoe were lightly infested. Most areas where pinyon dwarf mistletoe populations were observed (90%) also had juniper mistletoe (P. juniperinum) present, but many juniper mistletoe populations …

The Spiritual Self: Toward A Conceptualization Of Spiritual Identity Development, Timothy B. Smith, Justin B. Poll Aug 2003

The Spiritual Self: Toward A Conceptualization Of Spiritual Identity Development, Timothy B. Smith, Justin B. Poll

Faculty Publications

Both researchers and practitioners have demonstrated considerable interest in identity development, and positive personal identities have been associated with numerous positive mental health outcomes. However, major theories of identity development have neglected the salience of spiritual identity, even though the early work of William James placed this as a central component of personality. This article reviews four major theories of identity development (cognitive, psychodynamic, systems, and narrative) and suggests spiritual identity parallels to these theories. A tentative model of spiritual identity development is presented. Implications for therapy and future research concerning spiritual identity development are discussed.

A History Of "Especially For Youth" - 1976-1986, John Bytheway Aug 2003

A History Of "Especially For Youth" - 1976-1986, John Bytheway

Theses and Dissertations

The summer of 2002 marked the 26th anniversary of the youth camp “Especially for Youth” (EFY). Over 34,000 teenagers from across the United States, Canada and several foreign countries gathered on thirty-one different college campuses to attend one of the sixty-four sessions of the five-day program. Since the first session in 1976, Especially for Youth has enjoyed steady increases in attendance and popularity. Beginning in the early 1980s, the program's success reached the point that applicants were turned away because there was not enough space to house all those who wanted to attend.

EFY is sponsored by Brigham Young University …

Latter-Day Saints In Popular National Periodicals 1970-1981, Adam H. Nielson Aug 2003

Latter-Day Saints In Popular National Periodicals 1970-1981, Adam H. Nielson

Theses and Dissertations

The public image of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the product of several factors. This thesis investigates that image as presented in national periodicals from 1970 to 1981. During this time "Mormons" and "Mormonism" was a popular topic as the religion gained notoriety, and as an awareness of its peculiar beliefs and practices increased.

The rationale for using national magazines to assess public image is the assumption that they "reflect prevailing points of view" and help "formulate public opinion." Since popular attitudes are one of the factors that influence how the Church is accepted in the …

A Latter-Day Saint In Hitler's Ss: The True Story Of A Mormon Youth Who Joined And Defected From The Infamous Schutzstaffel, Alan F. Keele

BYU Studies

In researching and writing the story of Helmuth Hübener, the Latter-day Saint youth who was executed for distributing anti-Nazi literature in Germany during World War II, I learned of several other Hübener-like people in Nazi Germany. One such person, whom I shall call Bruno to preserve anonymity, was a young Latter-day Saint man who joined Hitler's infamous elite force, the SS, and then had a change of heart. I had the privilege, a number of years ago now, to interview this gentleman at his home in Germany.

Brigham Young's Word Of Wisdom Legacy, Paul H. Peterson, Ronald W. Walker Jul 2003

Brigham Young's Word Of Wisdom Legacy, Paul H. Peterson, Ronald W. Walker

BYU Studies

During the thirty-three years that Brigham Young led The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1844-77, he set the Church on a course of following the Word of Wisdom to the letter. While most Church members failed to obey the revelation's proscriptions during Brigham's lifetime, he set the goal that members would eventually comply with the Word of Wisdom. During his tenure, he changed the standard from moderate use of tobacco, alcohol, tea, and coffee to full abstinence.

The phrase medical errors is an umbrella term for all errors that occur within the health care system, including mishandled surgeries, diagnostic errors, equipment failures, and medication errors. This article is a review and discussion of the literature on the scope of medical errors, with a focus on drug-related problems and medication errors. Cost and quality ideas for addressing these issues are provided.

Religiousness And Depression: Evidence For A Main Effect And The Moderating Influence Of Stressful Life Events, Timothy B. Smith, Michael E. Mccullough, Justin Poll Jun 2003

Religiousness And Depression: Evidence For A Main Effect And The Moderating Influence Of Stressful Life Events, Timothy B. Smith, Michael E. Mccullough, Justin Poll

Faculty Publications

The association between religiousness and depressive symptoms was examined with meta-analytic methods across 147 independent investigations (N = 98,975). Across all studies, the correlation between religiousness and depressive symptoms was –.096, indicating that greater religiousness is mildly associated with fewer symptoms. The results were not moderated by gender, age, or ethnicity, but the religiousness–depression association was stronger in studies involving people who were undergoing stress due to recent life events. The results were also moderated by the type of measure of religiousness used in the study, with extrinsic religious orientation and negative religious coping (e.g., avoiding difficulties through religious activities, …

A Self-Adapting Healthcare Information Infrastructure Using Mobile Computing Devices, James K. Archibald, Eric S. Hall, Charles D. Knutson, David K. Vawdrey Jun 2003

A Self-Adapting Healthcare Information Infrastructure Using Mobile Computing Devices, James K. Archibald, Eric S. Hall, Charles D. Knutson, David K. Vawdrey

Faculty Publications

Despite recent improvements in the gathering and sharing of patient medical information among healthcare providers, there remains a gap in the electronic medical record infrastructure. Patient data is not available in some situations, either because the infrastructure is inaccessible (as in a natural disaster) or because there is no way to link the patient to the infrastructure (e.g., the patient cannot supply necessary identification information). This paper describes the Poket Doktor System, an architecture that allows an individual to carry personal electronic medical information on a wireless handheld device such as a smart card, cell phone, or PDA. Medical workers …

The 1710 Von Graffenried Settlement Of New Bern, North Carolina, Lewis B. Rohrbach Cg Jun 2003

The 1710 Von Graffenried Settlement Of New Bern, North Carolina, Lewis B. Rohrbach Cg

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In the following study I have endeavored to identify and document the lives and descendants of all 752 Swiss and Germans who came from Bern, Switzerland and London, England in 1710 to found New Bern , North Carolina. There were approximately 177 families in the migration traveling on three ships, of whom 51 families were Swiss, 106 were German, and approximately 20 families died out entirely on the voyage so that we do not know their names or nationality . The much better known 1710 New York settlement involved 10 ships and 847 families, but although the New Bern settlement …

Comparison Of Written And Oral Examinations In A Baccalaureate Medical-Surgical, Patricia Rushton, Dennis L. Eggett May 2003

Comparison Of Written And Oral Examinations In A Baccalaureate Medical-Surgical, Patricia Rushton, Dennis L. Eggett

Faculty Publications

Nursing students traditionally have been evaluated with an objective written examination. This method has shown some benefits and disadvantages. This project examined the value of oral examinations in evaluating nursing students. Five groups of students were evaluated with different forms of testing, some with only written tests, others with only oral examinations, some with a combination of both types of evaluations. The results showed that oral examinations can effectively evaluate the student's comprehension and application of clinical information in a clinical situation, as shown in higher test results, compared with oral written examinations, and positive student comments. Oral examination can …

Enabling Remote Access To Personal Electronic Medical Records, James K. Archibald, Eric S. Hall, Charles D. Knutson, David K. Vawdrey May 2003

Enabling Remote Access To Personal Electronic Medical Records, James K. Archibald, Eric S. Hall, Charles D. Knutson, David K. Vawdrey

Faculty Publications

Millions of people suffer from medical conditions that should be made known to healthcare practitioners prior to treatment. Paramedics and emergency room doctors cannot provide optimal care without sufficient knowledge of a patient’s medical history. Lacking patient information such as allergies, current prescriptions, and preexisting conditions, medical professionals are often forced to either delay treatment or rely on instincts. Medical mistakes in situations like these kill thousands of people and cost an estimated US$37 billion each year in the United States [1]. With the advent of electronic medical records (EMRs), patient information can be stored in computer databases at hospitals …

Macroinvertebrate Community Structure And Related Environmental Variables In Two Forks Of The Virgin River, Utah, Terence P. Boyle, Matthew J. Strand Apr 2003

Macroinvertebrate Community Structure And Related Environmental Variables In Two Forks Of The Virgin River, Utah, Terence P. Boyle, Matthew J. Strand

Western North American Naturalist

Using multivariate analysis techniques, we analyzed variation in the structure of the benthic macroinvertebrate community in the North Fork and East Fork of the Virgin River in and above Zion National Park in concert with a number of naturally occurring and anthropogenic environmental variables. Correspondence analysis revealed that the community structure in the 2 streams was markedly different despite occurring in areas similar in topography, elevation, and terrestrial vegetation cover. Subsequent analyses of the 2 streams separately using canonical correspondence analysis to test for strength of association of environmental variables with variations in benthic macroinvertebrate community structure revealed that communities …

Demographic And Environmental Relations Of Two Rare Astragalus Species Endemic To Washington County, Utah: Astragalus Holmgreniorum And A. Ampullarioides, Renée Van Buren, K. T. Harper Apr 2003

Demographic And Environmental Relations Of Two Rare Astragalus Species Endemic To Washington County, Utah: Astragalus Holmgreniorum And A. Ampullarioides, Renée Van Buren, K. T. Harper

Western North American Naturalist

Two endemic locoweeds of Washington County, Utah, Astragalus holmgreniorum and A. ampullarioides, were recently listed as federally endangered plant species (Federal Register 2001). They both occur in few, small populations surrounded by increasing human activity in the St. George, Utah, area. Demographic and habitat studies have been ongoing since 1992 and results of those studies are presented here. Astragalus holmgreniorum (Holmgren locoweed) is presently limited to 1 larger population and 2 smaller, isolated populations on the eastern and western edges of its range. It is a short-lived perennial that grows primarily on the Virgin limestone member of the Moenkopi …

Toward A Better Understanding Of The Comparatively High Prostate Cancer Incidence Rates In Utah, Ray M. Merrill, Sterling C. Hilton, Jared D. Sturgeon, Charles L. Wiggins Apr 2003

Toward A Better Understanding Of The Comparatively High Prostate Cancer Incidence Rates In Utah, Ray M. Merrill, Sterling C. Hilton, Jared D. Sturgeon, Charles L. Wiggins

Faculty Publications

This study assesses whether comparatively high prostate cancer incidence rates among white men in Utah represent higher rates among members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormons), who comprise about 70% of the state's male population, and considers the potential influence screening has on these rates. Methods: Analyses are based on 14,693 histologically confirmed invasive prostate cancer cases among men aged 50 years and older identified through the Utah Cancer Registry between 1985 and 1999. Cancer records were linked to LDS Church membership records to determine LDS status. Poisson regression was used to derive rate …

Racial Attitudes Among South African Young Adults: A Four-Year Follow-Up Study, Timothy B. Smith, Christopher R. Stones, Anthony Naidoo Apr 2003

Racial Attitudes Among South African Young Adults: A Four-Year Follow-Up Study, Timothy B. Smith, Christopher R. Stones, Anthony Naidoo

Faculty Publications

Due to many social changes that have occurred in South Africa since the first democratic elections in 1994, careful scrutiny must be given to the racial attitudes of South Africa’s young adults. Their degree of acceptance of the doctrine of deracialisation and reconciliation represents a hope or a warning in regard to a stable future. A follow up study was thus carried out in order to update data collected in 1995, with the hypothesis that, over time, greater acceptance of other racial groups would be reported. The authors examined the differences among the 180 Xhosa-speaking black, 89 so-called coloured, and …

Microfinance For Housing: The Mexican Case, Michael Goldberg, Marialisa Motta Apr 2003

Microfinance For Housing: The Mexican Case, Michael Goldberg, Marialisa Motta

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Can Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) help address the needs of millions of low-income families in Mexico for housing improvement loans? The paper assesses whether MFIs are suited to providing housing improvement credits and evaluates whether diversified housing portfolios can improve performance and mitigate risks for these institutions. After showing that the microfinance industry is at a nascent stage in Mexico, and that the current supply of housing microfinance credits is a tiny fraction of the estimated demand for these loans, the paper provides suggestions for government and donors to serve as short-term catalysts for the expansion of MFIs in the housing …

From The Individual To Individualism: A Critique Of The Helping Professions, Timothy B. Smith, Matthew R. Draper Apr 2003

From The Individual To Individualism: A Critique Of The Helping Professions, Timothy B. Smith, Matthew R. Draper

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Individualistic values characterize contemporary society and many popular approaches to mental health treatment. This paper critiques the individualistic values embedded in the helping professions that implicity contradict the teachings of Jesus Christ, the surest foundation for mental health interventions. Members of AMCAP are encouraged to search out and replace problematic values that contradict gospel teachings which have been integrated into contemporary mental health practice.
