Imagine Lunch, Susan Grandfield Jan 2004

Imagine Lunch, Susan Grandfield

The Utah English Journal

The high school where I teach houses many vending machines. A vending machine resides in every comer of the school known to me, and I think there are some machines in areas that I don't frequent. It's a big school, after all. Kids can buy candy, hot and spicy chips that tum their tongues red, Pop-Tarts, Pepsi (not Coke, though) and a variety of other so-called foods, none of which have nutritional value. Kids without much money have discovered a machine with a large pastry called a "Big Texas" (as in "I got me my Big Texas") for 65 cents. …

Young Heber J. Grant's Years Of Passage, Ronald W. Walker Jan 2004

Young Heber J. Grant's Years Of Passage, Ronald W. Walker

BYU Studies

As Heber J. Grant came of age, Mormonism was as much a part of the Utah landscape as the territory's dusty valleys and vaulting mountain walls. Young Heber met religion everywhere—in his Salt Lake City home and neighborhood, at the Tabernacle on Temple Square, in the offices of Church and civic leaders where he sometimes ventured, and certainly in his native Thirteenth Ward, one of the most innovative and organizationally developed Latter-day Saint congregations of the time. Slowly young Heber internalized his religious culture, but not before encountering the usual perils of adolescence and coming of age. The process tells …

Helena, Heraclius, And The True Cross, Hans A. Pohlsander Jan 2004

Helena, Heraclius, And The True Cross, Hans A. Pohlsander

Quidditas

More than three hundred years stand between the empress Helena, or St. Helena, and the Byzantine emperor Heraclius. This chronological distance has not been a hindrance to a very close association of the two personalities with each other. The link is not dynastic but thematic; it is provided by the Holy Cross, or the True Cross, i. e. the very cross of Christ's passion. It is the purpose of this article to show the manifestation of this link in the religious literature and ecclesiastical art of the Middle Ages and in the liturgy to this day.

Heber J. Grant And The Utah Loan And Trust Company, Ronald W. Walker

BYU Studies

Before 6:00 A.M. on May 29, 1897, the portly and veteran Apostle Brigham Young Jr., himself ailing due to an attack of dropsy, called at the Heber J. Grant household to pray a blessing upon his associate. He found that "Bro Grant... had a poor night but he was going to the hospital with firm faith that all would be well." The day before, Grant awoke with sever lumbar and abdominal pain. The doctors diagnosed a ruptured appendix and advanced peritonitis and advised immediate surgery. As the hour-and-a-half operation progressed, the nine attending surgeons found "extraordinary suppuration and commenced mortification." …

Grant's Watershed: Succession In The Presidency, 1887-1889, Ronald W. Walker Jan 2004

Grant's Watershed: Succession In The Presidency, 1887-1889, Ronald W. Walker

BYU Studies

Events during 1887-89, during Elder Wilford Woodruff's succession to the Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, remains an important but largely untold story—a time when differing views divided the Church's General Authorities and when the policies and procedures for installing a new president of the Church were tested and confirmed. These years are also important for the insights they offer in understanding the life of Heber J. Grant, who himself regarded that time as a personal watershed. While it is clear that he acted with candor, energy, and idealism throughout the episode, with hindsight he believed …

Health Insurance, Labor Supply, And Job Mobility: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 2004

Health Insurance, Labor Supply, And Job Mobility: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Jonathan Gruber, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

This paper provides a critical review of the empirical literature on the relationship between health insurance, labor supply, and job mobility. We review over 50 papers on this topic, almost exclusively written in the last 10 years. We reach five conclusions. First, there is clear and unambiguous evidence that health insurance is a central determinant of retirement decisions. Second, there is fairly clear evidence that health insurance is not a major determinant of the labor supply and welfare exit decisions of low income mothers. Third, there is fairly compelling evidence that health insurance is an important factor in the labor …

A Comparison Of Reading Development By Learners Of Japanese In Intensive Domestic Immersion And Study Abroad Contexts, Dan Dewey Jan 2004

A Comparison Of Reading Development By Learners Of Japanese In Intensive Domestic Immersion And Study Abroad Contexts, Dan Dewey

Faculty Publications

To investigate the role of context in reading development, a comparison of reading comprehension and processes was conducted between learners of Japanese as a second language in study abroad (SA; n = 15) and intensive domestic (in the United States) immersion (IM; n = 15) contexts. A significant difference was found between contexts in pretest to posttest gains on only one measure of reading comprehension, a self-assessment. Differences on the two other measures of comprehension—free-recall and vocabulary knowledge—were not significant. The self-assessment measure indicated that SA students felt more confident reading the second language than their IM counterparts. In terms …

Executive MBA programs are part-time programs usually offered weekday evenings, weekends, or online. Highly ranked universities across the globe offer EMBA's. The cost of the education varies from program to program and university to university. As more individuals pursue undergraduate education. those holding degrees seek post-graduate education to differentiate themselves and further …

The Diaries Of Mary Lois Walker Morris, Melissa Lambert Milewski Jan 2004

The Diaries Of Mary Lois Walker Morris, Melissa Lambert Milewski

Theses and Dissertations

An edited transcription of the 1879 to 1887 diaries of Mary Lois Walker Morris (1835-1919). Mary Lois, a plural wife in 19th century Utah, went in and out of hiding between 1885 and 1887 to protect her husband Elias Morris from prosecution for illegal cohabitation. Her daily diaries culminate with the court trial of her husband for illegal cohabitation in September 1887. At the trial, she testified falsely, stating that she had been separated from her husband since the beginning of 1883, when in fact the couple did not separate until May of 1885. As a result, her husband was …

Re-Immigration To Denmark: The Challenge Of Reintegration, Jette Mackintosh Jan 2004

Re-Immigration To Denmark: The Challenge Of Reintegration, Jette Mackintosh

The Bridge

Over the years, I have known a lot of happy and contented immigrants to the United States, and this made me wonder what motivated return migration. It was a completely uncharted field, so it was an exciting challenge when, in 1996, I was asked to give a paper on the subject at an international conference in Gothenburg. It has since developed into a full-scale research project and a book.

For Better Or For Worse: Default Effects And 401(K) Savings Behavior, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian, Andrew Metrick

Faculty Publications

Seemingly minor changes in the way a choice is framed to a decision maker can generate dramatic changes in behavior. Automatic enrollment provides a clear example of such effects. Under automatic enrollment (also called negative election), employees are automatically enrolled in their company’s 401(k) plan unless the employees elect to opt out of the plan. This contrasts with the usual arrangement in which employees must actively choose to participate in their employer’s 401(k).

Complex ethical issues characterize current healthcare environments. Nurse educators have been charged in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Nursing Practice document with the responsibility to provide baccalaureate graduates with the knowledge and skills to apply ethical decision-making frameworks to clinical practice. However, there is a paucity of literature on ethical reasoning in nursing students. The purpose of this paper is to describe ethical reasoning in capstone students in an integrated baccalaureate nursing program. Themes identified from clinical journal entries include integration of ethics into both personal and professional life, strengthened commitment to …

Plan Design And 401(K) Savings Outcomes, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 2004

Plan Design And 401(K) Savings Outcomes, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

We assess the impact of 401(k) plan design on four different 401(k) savings outcomes: participation in the 401(k) plan, the distribution of employee contribution rates, asset allocation, and cash distributions. We show that plan design can have an important effect on all of these savings outcomes. This suggests an important role for both employers in determining how to structure their 401(k) plans and government regulators in creating institutions that encourage or discourage particular aspects of 401(k) plan design.

Young Heber J. Grant And His Call To The Apostleship, Ronald W. Walker Jan 2004

Young Heber J. Grant And His Call To The Apostleship, Ronald W. Walker

BYU Studies

A year following his call to become president of the Tooele Stake, twenty-four-year-old Heber J. Grant stopped by the Salt Lake studio of Charles Savage, the pioneer photographer. The conversation took an unexpected turn. Elder Grant wrote in his journal that Savage told him "to put it down that within one year I would be a member of the Twelve Apostles."

Rachel R. Grant: The Continuing Legacy Of The Feminine Ideal, Ronald W. Walker Jan 2004

Rachel R. Grant: The Continuing Legacy Of The Feminine Ideal, Ronald W. Walker

BYU Studies

We can imagine ourselves visiting Aunt Rachel Grant, longtime president of the Thirteenth Ward Relief Society and one of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint's "leading ladies," at her home on Salt Lake City's Second East Street. In the year of our visit, 1890, her two-story, plastered adobe home partakes of the prevailing feminine ideal that stresses homemaking and handicraft. The stove is highly burnished, while the arms of each chair are covered with homemade lace crocheting. A corner "whatnot" meticulously displays pictures, small framed mottoes, wax and hair flowers, and other curios. Rachel's person also reflects her …

Heber J. Grant's European Mission, 1903-1906, Ronald W. Walker Jan 2004

Heber J. Grant's European Mission, 1903-1906, Ronald W. Walker

BYU Studies

Elder Heber J. Grant landed in Liverpool, England, in November 1903, and by the first of the year he officially assumed his new position as president of the European Mission. The mission began at Tromso, Norway; and ran to Cape Town, South Africa; with Iceland and India serving as distant east-west meridians. While the church had branches in each of these extremities, Grant's field of labor was more compact. Most of the mission's effort was reserved to the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia, and Switzerland, where he had a general superintendency, and especially in the British Isles, where he had duties that …

Employee Stock Purchase Plans, Gary V. Engelhardt, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 2004

Employee Stock Purchase Plans, Gary V. Engelhardt, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

Employee stock purchase plans (ESPPs) are designed to promote employee stock ownership broadly within the firm and provide another tax-deferred vehicle for individual capital accumulation in addition to traditional pensions, 401(k)s, and stock options. We outline the individual and corporate tax treatment of ESPPs and the circumstances under which ESPPs will be preferred to cash compensation from a purely tax perspective. We then examine empirically ESPP participation using administrative data from 1997-2001 for a large health services company that employs approximately 30,000 people. The picture that emerges from the analysis of these data suggests that there is substantial non-participation in …

Market Reaction To The Expiration Of Ipo Lockup Provisions, James C. Brau, David A. Carter, Stephen E. Christophe, Kimberly G. Key Jan 2004

Market Reaction To The Expiration Of Ipo Lockup Provisions, James C. Brau, David A. Carter, Stephen E. Christophe, Kimberly G. Key

Faculty Publications

Initial public offering (IPO) lockup agreements prevent insider sale of shares for specified periods of time (often 180 days). This study investigates share price reactions at and around the time the lockup agreements expire. Results indicate statistically significant negative abnormal returns in the event window surrounding the expiration date. The results are consistent with informational asymmetries and decreasing incentive alignment between insiders and general shareholders. In addition, multivariate analysis identifies several variables that help explain these abnormal returns.

The Influences Of Family Leisure Patterns On Perceptions Of Family Functioning*, Ramon B. Zabriskie, Bryan P. Mccormick Jan 2004

The Influences Of Family Leisure Patterns On Perceptions Of Family Functioning*, Ramon B. Zabriskie, Bryan P. Mccormick

Faculty Publications

This study conducted a preliminary test of a model of family leisure functioning by examining the relationship of core and balance family leisure patterns to family cohesion and adaptability. We hypothesized that core family leisure patterns address family needs for stability, facilitate the development of cohesive relationships, and are related to perceptions of family cohesion, whereas balance family leisure patterns address family needs for change, facilitate the development of adaptive skills, and are related to perceptions of family adaptability. Findings from 2 multiple regression analyses provided preliminary support for the model. Conclusions and implications are discussed.

The Legacy Of The Danish Resistance In World War Ii, Joy Ibsen Jan 2004

The Legacy Of The Danish Resistance In World War Ii, Joy Ibsen

The Bridge

When I first heard about this conference, I immediately thought of this topic, because I believe the Danish Resistance in World War II provides a legacy of critical importance. It is one which can be of help in guiding our way through today's murky social and political problems as we grapple with terrorist threats and moral issues confronting us in this new millennium. It is a story of special significance to all Danes and Danish-Americans.

The Impact Of American Jazz On Denmark: From The 1950s To The 1970s, Merete Von Eyben

The Bridge

This is how Leonard Malone, an American writer who lived in Denmark until his death in 1998, described Dexter Gordon's first appearance at Jazzhus Montmartre. "Harold Goldberg had arranged for Dexter to appear at the Montmartre, beginning the first week in October ... On the ninth of October 1962, Dexter finally appeared .. .late. Thin. Very thin. Tall. Very tall. Charismatic...When he finished playing ... the audience was in a state that could best be characterized as a delightful state of shock.Dexter was in town and was burning! From that evening on, Dexter became "' our man in Copenhagen."'

An Examination Of The Mechanisms Of Action In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Bulimia Nervosa, Scott A. Baldwin, Diane L. Spangler, W. Stewart Agras

Faculty Publications

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for bulimia nervosa (BN) has received consid- erable empirical support for its efficacy. However, few investigators have examined the mechanisms proposed to account for the reduction of BN symptoms during CBT. The current study examined the associations between therapist interventions, client mechanisms, and symptoms during treatment in a sample of 56 clients under- going CBT for BN. Results suggested that behavioral interventions were most asso- ciated with symptom change during treatment whereas relational interventions were most associated with change in client mechanisms such as client engagement. Addi- tionally, some changes in BN symptoms were mediated by changes …
