Life Harmony: Helping Clients Find Peace In A Busy Life, E. Jeffrey Hill, Ryan J. Anderson Apr 2004

Life Harmony: Helping Clients Find Peace In A Busy Life, E. Jeffrey Hill, Ryan J. Anderson

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Many clients struggle with overload from competing life demands such as work and family responsibilities. 'Balance' has been the predominant metaphor advanced to cope with this zero-sum battle. A different, music-based metaphor, where the individual is the composer and conductor of his or her life symphony, is proposed. The goal then becomes the ability to provide for and nurture one's family in harmony. Applying this harmony metaphor to both work and family relationships illuminates how one's life at work can contribute to one's life at home and vice versa. Eight specific suggestions are offered for counselors and therapists to help …

George H. Brimhall's Legacy Of Service To Brigham Young University, Joseph H. Groberg, Mary Jane Woodger Apr 2004

George H. Brimhall's Legacy Of Service To Brigham Young University, Joseph H. Groberg, Mary Jane Woodger

BYU Studies

Franklin S. Harris, president of Brigham Young University from 1921 to 1945, said of his predecessor, George H. Brimhall (fig. 1), "George H. Brimhall, under a tree would make a university any day for where he teaches students will always gather to be taught." Brimhall had two great causes, Harris said: his religion and the cause of education. From his youth to his old age, Brimhall carried these causes forward with unrelenting vigor. In his service as president of Brigham Young University (1904-1921), they merged into one: a university supported by, loyal to, and controlled by The Church of Jesus …

A Piecewise Linear Approach To Overbooking, Robert Ball, Mark J. Clement, Casey T. Deccio, Feng Huang, Quinn O. Snell Apr 2004

A Piecewise Linear Approach To Overbooking, Robert Ball, Mark J. Clement, Casey T. Deccio, Feng Huang, Quinn O. Snell

Faculty Publications

Overbooking is frequently used to increase the revenue generated by a network infrastructure without incurring additional costs. If the overbooking factor is chosen appropriately, additional virtual circuits can be admitted without degrading quality of service for existing customers. Most implementations use a single factor to accept a linear fraction of traffic requests. If a piecewise linear approach is used in admissions, additional traffic can be accepted without causing proportional increases in loss rate and utilization. This additional accepted traffic can significantly improve the profit margin for network service providers.

Active Minimization Of Acoustic Energy Density In A Mock Tractor Cab, Benjamin Mahonri Faber Mar 2004

Active Minimization Of Acoustic Energy Density In A Mock Tractor Cab, Benjamin Mahonri Faber

Theses and Dissertations

An active noise control (ANC) system has been applied to the problem of attenuating low-frequency tonal noise inside small enclosures. The intended target application of the system was the reduction of the engine firing frequency inside heavy equipment cabins. The ANC system was based on a version of the filtered-x LMS adaptive algorithm, modified for the minimization of acoustic energy density (ED), rather than the more traditional minimization of squared acoustic pressure (SP). Three loudspeakers produced control signals within a mock cabin composed of a steel frame with plywood sides and a Plexiglas® front. An energy density sensor, capable of …

The CPJ's activities raise issues and place them on the agenda, and they influence discourse, policy, institutional procedures, and state behavior. …

Response Of Tree Ring Holocellulose Δ13C To Moisture Availability In Populus Fremontii At Perennial And Intermittent Stream Reaches, Daniel L. Potts, David G. Williams Feb 2004

Response Of Tree Ring Holocellulose Δ13C To Moisture Availability In Populus Fremontii At Perennial And Intermittent Stream Reaches, Daniel L. Potts, David G. Williams

Western North American Naturalist

We measured δ13C of tree ring holocellulose to assess intra- and interannual variation in integrated leaf gas exchange responses of Frémont cottonwood (Populus fremontii) to monsoonal moisture inputs in southeastern Arizona. We predicted that δ13C of trees growing along drought-susceptible intermittent reaches of this semiarid river system would be more responsive to monsoonal moisture inputs than trees found along perennial reaches, where groundwater is consistently available. We sampled stem xylem cores from 7 trees, each at an intermittent and perennial reach of the San Pedro River near Tombstone, Arizona. We identified and subdivided individual …

Occurrence And Habitat Use Of Passage Neotropical Migrants In The Sonoran Desert, Paul C. Hardy, David J. Griffin, Amy J. Kuenzi, Michael L. Morrison Feb 2004

Occurrence And Habitat Use Of Passage Neotropical Migrants In The Sonoran Desert, Paul C. Hardy, David J. Griffin, Amy J. Kuenzi, Michael L. Morrison

Western North American Naturalist

Little is known about stopover habitat use by neotropical migratory birds in the deserts of North America. We determined distribution, abundance, and habitat associations of neotropical migrants during spring migration in the Sonoran Desert of southwestern Arizona along large washes that supported xeroriparian scrub vegetation. We detected 91 bird species during surveys, 50 (52%) of which were passage neotropical migrants. Although xeroriparian scrub covered less than 55% of the area surveyed, 97% of all detections of passage migrants were from this vegetation type. By calculating habitat breadth for each species, we classified 87% of passage migrants as xeroriparian specialists. Richness …

Effects Of Friction Stir Welding On Polymer Microstructure, Seth R. Strand Feb 2004

Effects Of Friction Stir Welding On Polymer Microstructure, Seth R. Strand

Theses and Dissertations

This work establishes the relationships between several key Friction Stir Welding process parameters and the resulting microstructural and flexural properties of the welded joint. A series of four single parameter experiments were run. The parameters investigated were pin diameter, feedrate, shoe temperature, and pressure time. Butt welds were made in 6 mm thick stress-relieved extruded polypropylene sheet. Three-point bend tests were used to determine the ultimate flexural strength and coincident strain. The maximum bend angle before failure was used to label the welds as "good or bad." An optical microscope capable of cross polarization was used to examine and photograph …

Fiscal Decentralization In The Czech And Slovak Republics: A Comparative Study Of Moral Hazard, Phillip J. Bryson, Gary C. Cornia, Gloria E. Wheeler Feb 2004

Fiscal Decentralization In The Czech And Slovak Republics: A Comparative Study Of Moral Hazard, Phillip J. Bryson, Gary C. Cornia, Gloria E. Wheeler

Faculty Publications

Fiscal decentralization has provided neither the benefits of decentralization nor an independent revenue source for subnational governments in the Czech and Slovak Republics. In Slovakia, political conditions early in the transition led to the relative neglect of revenue transfers from the center. This produced financial stress but also encouraged greater fiscal independence for local governments. It also forced them to seek maximal property tax revenues. The Czech Republic made more substantial transfers to local governments, but the development of fiscal autonomy was stifled as transfers reduced the need for own-source local revenues. The Czech real estate tax has remained nominal …

Measuring Prejudiced Attitudes Toward Mexicans In Latter-Day Saint Missionaries During Missionary Service In The American Southwest, Jared A. Montoya Feb 2004

Measuring Prejudiced Attitudes Toward Mexicans In Latter-Day Saint Missionaries During Missionary Service In The American Southwest, Jared A. Montoya

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the foundations of prejudiced attitudes toward Mexicans held by White Americans and to investigate a means of reducing it, paying specific attention to prejudice found within a subpopulation of White Americans. The origins of American prejudice toward Mexicans are outlined using both historical and psychological explanations. An understanding of these origins leads to the notion that increased favorable contact is the best method for reducing prejudice. A field study focusing on prejudice toward Mexicans among ecclesiastical volunteers demonstrated that missionary service can be considered a means of favorable contact. Eighty-one White American …

Ann Tizia Leitich: New Voice, New Woman: Packaging America For Vienna, Brooke Marie Wright Feb 2004

Ann Tizia Leitich: New Voice, New Woman: Packaging America For Vienna, Brooke Marie Wright

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the contribution which the 1920s works of Viennese journalist and novelist Ann Tizia Leitich made on the Austrian consideration of the new woman during the interwar period. Following World War I, European society was both infatuated and repulsed by American culture, and especially by American women. While many European women began to look to the United States as the model of the “new woman,” others harshly criticized the changes which American influence and the image of the American woman had brought to Europe. As an Austrian living in the United States and writing newspaper articles and other …

Androgen Receptor Expression In The Rat Prostate Is Down-Regulated By Dietary Phytoestrogens, Edwin D. Lephart, Trent D. Lund, Daniel J. Munson, Herman Aldercreutz, Robert J. Handa Jan 2004

Androgen Receptor Expression In The Rat Prostate Is Down-Regulated By Dietary Phytoestrogens, Edwin D. Lephart, Trent D. Lund, Daniel J. Munson, Herman Aldercreutz, Robert J. Handa

Faculty Publications

Background- It is well established that the growth of the prostate gland is a hormone-dependent phenomenon involving both androgenic and estrogenic control. Proliferation of prostate cells is, at least in part, under control of estrogen receptor beta (ER-beta). Phytoestrogens bind ER-beta with high affinity and therefore may have antiproliferative effects in the prostate. Methods- The prostates of male Long-Evans rats fed a diet high in phytoestrogens (Phyto-600) or very low levels of phytoestrogens (Phyto-free) were analyzed to determine the impact of dietary phytoestrogens on prostate weight and androgen receptor (AR) expression in the prostate. Results- Dietary phytoestrogens significantly decreased post-pubertal …

Prediction Of Ground Water Vulnerability Using An Integrated Gis-Based Neuro-Fuzzy Techniques Jan 2004

Prediction Of Ground Water Vulnerability Using An Integrated Gis-Based Neuro-Fuzzy Techniques

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

There is a need to develop new modeling techniques that assess ground water vulnerability with less expensive data and which are robust when data are uncertain and incomplete. Incorporation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with a modeling approach that is robust has the potential for creating a successful modeling tool. The specific objective of this study was to develop a model using Neuro-fuzzy techniques in a GIS to predict ground water vulnerability. The Neuro-fuzzy model was developed in JAVA using four plausible parameters deemed critical in transporting contaminants in and through the soil profile. These parameters include soil hydrologic group, …

Modeling Groundwater Flow For The Delineation Of Wellhead Protection Area Around A Water-Well At Nachole Of Bangladesh. Jan 2004

Modeling Groundwater Flow For The Delineation Of Wellhead Protection Area Around A Water-Well At Nachole Of Bangladesh.

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Delineation of wellhead protection area is an important component of groundwater contamination protection strategy to prevent probable environmental and health hazards. Modeling of ground water infiltration and movement in the wellhead area is a critical part of any effective wellhead protection program. Such models depend on an accurate description of the aquifer in the wellhead area for the reliable estimation of contaminant travel times and defining protection area. In this paper, a two-dimensional groundwater flow model is proposed for the estimation of contaminant travel time to water well and delineation of wellhead protection area. The model is applied for the …

Application Of Chemical Mass Balance To Water Quality Data Of Malaprabha River Jan 2004

Application Of Chemical Mass Balance To Water Quality Data Of Malaprabha River

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Mass balance calculations carried out for Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cl, SO4 and HCO3 for the study area showed that the major source of contamination is through non-point sources. It is also observed that the river water quality during the non-monsoon season (February, 2000) almost resembles with the groundwater quality of the adjoining aquifer. However, during post-monsoon period (October, 1999) a wide variation was found between groundwater and surface water quality which can be attributed to the movement of fertilizers and agricultural ashes with monsoon flows reaching the stream along with overland flow. The major source of contamination …

Growing Up In Early Utah: The Wasatch Literary Association 1874-1878, Ronald W. Walker Jan 2004

Growing Up In Early Utah: The Wasatch Literary Association 1874-1878, Ronald W. Walker

BYU Studies

One day in early February 1874, Jim Ferguson, sensing the forlorn hope of advancing his courtship with Minnie Horne, suggested to Ort (Orson F.) Whitney and another of the boys that they organize a reading society. Ferguson "had heard, no doubt, of fond couples 'reading life's meaning in each others eyes,'" Whitney later mused, "and that was the kind of reading that most interested him." Since the seventeen-year-old Whitney found himself "in the same box with Ferguson on the girl question," the suggestion found a ready response. Whitney immediately invited those who "would make desirable members" to meet at the …

Wedding Vows And Coffins: Canticles' Rhetoric, The Liturgical Form Of Matrimony And Middleton's A Chaste Maid In Cheapside (1613), Lisa Beauchamp

Quidditas

The concluding scene of Thomas Middleton’s A Chaste Maid in Cheapside begins as a double funeral procession and turns into a wedding as the lovers rise from their coffins to be married; but what are coffins doing in a wedding scene? The coffins, as an onstage sign of the metamorphosis of funeral into wedding, are the emblematic focus for this paper. This investigation exposes the resonances of Canticles’ erotic betrothal and Revelation’s matrimonial fulfilment as a rhetoric common to both theatrical rituals and to ecclesiastical scriptures. After briefly introducing what I call Canticles’ rhetoric – Canticles itself, its exegesis, and …
