The purposes of this study were to (1) examine the effects of criterion-referenced (i.e., Programmed Practice Sheet or PPS) and norm-referenced (i.e., standardized) skill assessments on the situational motivation of junior high school physical education students (N = 507), (2) determine if student task and ego dispositions could be affected by the type of skill assessment administered, and (3) determine if having choices of skill level affects student situational motivation and perception of autonomy support. Student situational motivation, task and ego disposition, and sense of autonomy were assessed using the Situational Motivation Scale (SIMS), Perception of Success Questionnaire (POSQ), and …

Casuistical Connections From Dunton To Defoe, John E. Fossum Jul 2004

Casuistical Connections From Dunton To Defoe, John E. Fossum

Theses and Dissertations

This master's thesis is primarily concerned with the philosophical conditions of late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century England that encouraged the emergence of periodical literature and perpetuated the birth of the novel. While most connections between periodical literature and the novel are made on how the former created the readership that ensured the latter's success, I focus on how the epistemology unique to the advent of empirical science together with the growing prominence of casuistic thought created a space in which periodical literature could emerge and the early novel could flourish. I investigate the underlying assertion of a particular philosophical amalgam …

Probabilistic Methodology For Record Linkage Determining Robustness Of Weights, Krista Peine Jensen Jul 2004

Probabilistic Methodology For Record Linkage Determining Robustness Of Weights, Krista Peine Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Record linkage is the process that joins separately recorded pieces of information for a particular individual from one or more sources. To facilitate record linkage, a reliable computer based approach is ideal. In genealogical research computerized record linkage is useful in combing information for an individual across multiple censuses.

In creating a computerized method for linking censuse records it needs to be determined if weights calculated from one geographical area, can be used to link records from another geographical area. Research performed by Marcie Francis calculates field weights using census records from 1910 and 1920 for Ascension Parish Louisiana. These …

In addition, a negative relationship between family differentiation and symptoms of eating disorders for individuals whose parents are not …

Religion And Gender In Christian, Jewish, And Muslim Married Couples, Anna Mae Ridley Jul 2004

Religion And Gender In Christian, Jewish, And Muslim Married Couples, Anna Mae Ridley

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the influence of religion on gender roles in marriage. Past research indicates that previous theories of marital power have ignored couples' own conceptualizations and have relied on taken for granted assumptions. Thirty-two religious couples (from Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faiths) were interviewed regarding their gender roles. Grounded-theory qualitative analyses were conducted for couples' perceptions of religious influence on gender roles, the development of their gender practice, and their operationalization of marital power. Results are reported according to couples' discussion of role organization, role design, and outcomes. Valuing gender differences moderated religious impact on couples' role development and …

Melioration And The Behavioral Addiction Process: An Experimental Analysis, Jared Micah Dinehart Jul 2004

Melioration And The Behavioral Addiction Process: An Experimental Analysis, Jared Micah Dinehart

Theses and Dissertations

Melioration can be a factor contributing to behavioral addiction. In this study, 76 university undergraduates operated a "money machine" by selecting between choices that corresponded to maximization and melioration. Participants initially made choices consistent with a strategy of melioration and demonstrated significantly greater variability in choice behavior when visual cues were presented aimed at exposing the internality (or consequence) of the choice situation. Removal of the visual cues resulted in a return to lower responding. Visual cues may aid in interrupting the behavioral addiction pattern by limiting exclusive use of a melioration choice strategy. Methods of restructuring and experimentation with …

The Million-Dollar Question: Why Pre-Adolescents Watch Television, Emily A. Smurthwaite Jul 2004

The Million-Dollar Question: Why Pre-Adolescents Watch Television, Emily A. Smurthwaite

Theses and Dissertations

This study presents qualitative research examining the relationship youth have with television. Information for this study was collected through media journals, personal essays, in-depth interviews, and focus groups held with eighteen sixth-graders who attended a charter elementary school in Lindon, Utah.

The question posed to the students multiple times during the data collection was: “Would you give up television for $1 million?” Through the students’ answers and ensuing dialogue, the researcher examined the social value the pre-adolescents attributed to watching television. The findings identify three main categories the students said were reasons they were attached to television, which also corresponded …

Women's Response To Spousal Unemployment: Economic, Labor Force, And Family Constraints, Elizabeth Miklya Legerski

Theses and Dissertations

Using data collected from 29 interviews with the wives of steelworkers who were forced into unemployment, I explore the conditions and factors that shape women's choices in response to their husbands' job loss. Access to a unique and under-studied sample of women married to unemployed working-class men necessitates the use of grounded theory research techniques that allow me to "give voice" to working-class women.

Preserving Trust Across Multiple Sessions In Open Systems, Fuk-Wing Thomas Chan Jul 2004

Preserving Trust Across Multiple Sessions In Open Systems, Fuk-Wing Thomas Chan

Theses and Dissertations

Trust negotiation, a new authentication paradigm, enables strangers on the Internet to establish trust through the gradual disclosure of digital credentials and access control policies. Previous research in trust negotiation does not address issues in preserving trust across multiple sessions. This thesis discusses issues in preserving trust between parties who were previously considered strangers. It also describes the design and implementation of trust preservation in TrustBuilder, a prototype trust negotiation system. Preserving trust information can reduce the frequency and cost of renegotiation. A scenario is presented that demonstrates that a server supporting trust preservation can recoup the cost of the …

Communities, Place, And Conservation On Mount Kilimanjaro, Marie Bradshaw Durrant Jul 2004

Communities, Place, And Conservation On Mount Kilimanjaro, Marie Bradshaw Durrant

Theses and Dissertations

The Chagga people have lived and worked on Mount Kilimanjaro for more than 250 years. Through traditions and social practices within their communities and families, strong bonds are established between the Chagga and their home on the mountain. Kilimanjaro National Park and Forest Reserve (KINAPA) was established in the 1970s to protect and conserve the mountain, based on a long history of colonialism and western ideals. As KINAPA has attempted to preserve the flora and fauna on the uppermost portion of Mount Kilimanjaro, they have alienated local residents from the land through a conservation approach that relies on "fences and …

Objective: To determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and soft drink consumption among adolescents. It is hypothesized that soft drink consumption contributes to overweight and obesity among adolescents.

Background: Research examining the relationship between body mass index and soft drink consumption is inconsistent. Several studies have found a negative association between total sugar intake and BMI; however, others have found a link between sugar-sweetened drinks and obesity. There are no known studies that have controlled for physical activity.

Data and Methods: Data on approximately 225 adolescents were used. Frequency of soft drink consumption, type of milk, and calcium …

Towards A Decision Support System For Real Time Risk Assessment Of Hazardous Material Transport On Road, D. Giglio, R. Minciardi, D. Pizzorni, R. Rudari, Roberto Sacile, A. Tomasoni, E. Trasforini Jul 2004

Towards A Decision Support System For Real Time Risk Assessment Of Hazardous Material Transport On Road, D. Giglio, R. Minciardi, D. Pizzorni, R. Rudari, Roberto Sacile, A. Tomasoni, E. Trasforini

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Several emerging telematics technologies allow a new definition of the risk caused by the transport on road of hazardous material (hazmat), which can be more related to space and time varying factors. Since there are many varying factors (for example, the state of the road, of the weather, of the driver, of the hazardous material) which affects its degree, hazmat transport risk is by definition dynamic, so that conventional definitions of natural and industrial hazard and risk are not adequate. In addition, while the management systems related to the real-time planning of hazmat routing can be oriented towards the achievement …

Estimation Of Air Quality At Trier, Germany - A Case Study With Street 5., Jürgen Junk, Alfred Helbig Jul 2004

Estimation Of Air Quality At Trier, Germany - A Case Study With Street 5., Jürgen Junk, Alfred Helbig

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In the course of the European Council Directive on permissible air pollutant limit values, validstarting from 2005 there is an urgent call for action, particularly for fine dust (PM10). Current investigations(Junk and Helbig 2003, Reuter and building Mueller 2003) show that the limit values in certain places incongested areas are exceeded. Only if it is possible to located these Hot Spots purposeful measures to reducethe ambient air pollution can be conducted. For an efficient identification of these Hot Spots complexcomputer models or establishing special measurements networks are to expensive. Using the statistical modelSTREET 5,0 (KTT 2003) a cost-effective screening of …

The Role Of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis In A Decision Support System For Rehabilitation Of Contaminated Sites (The Desyre Software), C. Carlon, S. Giove, Paola Agostini, A. Critto, Antonio Marcomini

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The rehabilitation of contaminated sites involves several considerations in terms of environmental, technological and socio-economic aspects. A decision support system becomes therefore necessary in order to manage problem complexity and to define effective rehabilitation interventions. DESYRE (Decision Support sYstem for Rehabilitation of contaminated sites) is a software system which integrates risk assessment with socio-economic analysis and technological assessment in order to provide decision-makers with different remediation scenarios to be evaluated. The structure of the system allows a subsequent analysis, from socioeconomic analysis and site characterization, to risk assessment before and after remediation technologies selection, until the definition of remediation scenarios. …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A tool (TEAP) to evaluate in real-time and operational mode the air quality produced by industrial plants (power plants also) has been developed based on the third generation of air quality modelling systems. The system uses the non-hydrostatic mesoscale meteorological model MM5 (PSU/NCAR, USA) and the air quality modelling system (transport and chemistry) CMAQ (Community Multiscale Air Quality Modelling System) (EPA, USA) by using the so-called ON/OFF scenario which allows the user to have in advance (48 - 72 hours) a detailed information in time and space on what is the relative impact of the industrial emissions in an area …

Continuous Simulation In Material Flow Networks, A. Moeller Jul 2004

Continuous Simulation In Material Flow Networks, A. Moeller

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Software systems supporting industrial ecology, corporate material flow analysis and life cycle assessment, are normally used as environmental accounting systems. Using these software systems it is easy to model material and energy flow networks with hundreds or even thousands of processes. Environmental accounting systems are not only utilised to analyse and control existing material and energy flow systems, they are also applied to assess future scenarios in steady-state models. But these systems do not support dynamic modelling. Even though dynamic behaviour is not the main focus of environmental accounting systems, sometimes simulation models are required to estimate material and energy …

Modelling The Dynamics Of Public Attention Towards Environmental Issues, Jens Newig, Julia Hesselmann Jul 2004

Modelling The Dynamics Of Public Attention Towards Environmental Issues, Jens Newig, Julia Hesselmann

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Public attention, traced over time, often displays seemingly paradox behaviour: Contrary towhat one might expect, public concern is seldom highest when the environmental conditions are the worst.Rather, concern most often rises when conditions have already become better. Furthermore, public attentiondynamics frequently shows self-reinforcing behaviour resulting in distinct cycles, e.g. due to sometrigger event. In this paper, public attention is viewed as a social macro-level phenomenon that is soughtto be explained by the interaction of a multitude of single actors, namely individual citizens, the press, andpoliticians. First, a causal model based on rational choice theory is constructed in order to elucidate …

Possible Courses: Multi-Objective Modelling And Decision Support Using A Bayesian Network Approximation To A Nonpoint Source Pollution Model, David Swayne, Jie Shi Jul 2004

Possible Courses: Multi-Objective Modelling And Decision Support Using A Bayesian Network Approximation To A Nonpoint Source Pollution Model, David Swayne, Jie Shi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Modelling systems frequently work in a single domain, such as physical or chemical process modelling, hydrology or combinations, to simulate process in nature such as pollution transport or the production of food or manufactured goods. Side-effects of agro-industrial processes, or gains / losses from production enterprises are separately modelled without the ability to examine trade-offs or alternatives. Multi-objective modeling attempts to combine "apples and oranges" through decision theoretical principles. Such treatments can couple production and waste systems to quantify the economic cost of remediation. We demonstrate such an application, from the data acquisition, model calibration through to the hypothesis testing, …

Groundwater High Elevations Damaging The Environment At Mosul City, Abdulghani A. Hasan, Thair M. Al-Taiee

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

High elevations of groundwater at Mosul city is a very big problem and may cause massdestructions to the environment, health and Building foundations due to the closing of groundwater nearground surface to a depth of water in many places (less than 1 m). From filed investigations for 43 largediameters shallow wells, the water elevations were measured 14 times through 7 months. Utilizing rasterbased GIS operations with automated parameter estimation (PEST) the conceptual model was build andconverted to numerical model. After model calibration the hydraulic conductivity values have been found. The elevations, path lines and flow vectors maps were drawn from model …

Assessing The Ecological Impacts Of Salinity Management Using A Bayesian Decision Network, A. Sadoddin, R. A. Letcher, Lachlan T. H. Newham

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper outlines a component of a study currently being undertaken to provide a new tool for the holistic management of dryland salinity. The Little River catchment in the upper Macquarie River basin of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, is used as a case study. The model uses a Bayesian Decision Network (BDN) approach to integrating the various system components – biophysical, social, ecological, and economic. The method of integration of the system components is demonstrated through an example application showing the impacts of various scenarios on terrestrial and riparian ecology. The paper outlines these scenarios and demonstrates the way …

Artificial Neural Networks Prediction Of Pm10 In The Milan Area, M. Cecchetti, G. Corani, G. Guarisoa Jul 2004

Artificial Neural Networks Prediction Of Pm10 In The Milan Area, M. Cecchetti, G. Corani, G. Guarisoa

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

PM10 constitutes a major concern for Milan air quality. We presents a series of results obtainedapplying different neural networks approaches to the PM10 prediction problem. The 1-day ahead predictionshows a satisfactory level of accuracy, which may be further improved if a proper deseasonalization approach isadopted, thus transferring some a priori knowledge in the data pre-processing step. Then, we tackle the problemof the 2-days ahead prediction; in order to optimize the neural network architecture identification procedure,we try a pruning approach besides the usual trial and error one. Prediction performances are very close betweenthe two models, and denote a significant decrease of …

Principles Of Human-Environment Systems (Hes) Research, Roland W. Scholz, Claudia R. Binder

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper presents the basic principles, applications, and a methodological discussion of the approach of Human-Environment Systems (HES). In general, HES includes all environmental and technological systems that are relevant for or affected by humans. The basic principles of the HES approach are: (1) human and environmental systems are constructed as complementary systems, (2) a hierarchy of human systems with related environmental systems are considered, (3) environmental systems are modeled in their immediate and delayed dynamic reactions to human action, (4) the behavior of the human system is modeled from a decision theoretic perspective differentiating between goal formation, strategy formation, …

Obstacles In Launching A Participatory Group Discussion And Modelling Process, S. Panebianco, Claudia Pahl-Wostl Jul 2004

Obstacles In Launching A Participatory Group Discussion And Modelling Process, S. Panebianco, Claudia Pahl-Wostl

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The combination of model-building and group discussions seems to be a promising approach to support learning processes among stakeholders involved in management problems since it allows combining factual analysis and qualitative and quantitative model simulations with an analysis of subjective perceptions and mental models. However, the step of launching such a participatory process might fail due a lack of willingness of the stakeholders to participate in the process. This paper reports about an attempt to involve a specific group of stakeholders and the problems encountered during this process. Although the stakeholders mentioned different reasons, the most important but primarily hidden …
