Montane Insular Butterfly Biogeography: Fauna Of Ball Mountain, Siskiyou County, California, Arthur M. Shapiro Apr 1986

Montane Insular Butterfly Biogeography: Fauna Of Ball Mountain, Siskiyou County, California, Arthur M. Shapiro

Great Basin Naturalist

Ball Mountain is an isolated, mostly heavily forested peak reaching the subalpine zone (2,330 m) in eastern Siskiyou County north of Mt. Shasta, California. It supports a rich fauna of at least 68 butterfly species showing affinities to the faunas of the Trinity Alps and Eddies, the Warners, and the Cascades. Rare or endemic entities include Speyeria monnonia, Lycaena heteronea gravenotata, and melanic forms of Speyeria atlantis and Agriades "glandon."Several zones of intergradation or hybridization impinge on the fauna as well.

Floristic Analysis Of The Southwestern United States, Steven P. Mclaughlin Jan 1986

Floristic Analysis Of The Southwestern United States, Steven P. Mclaughlin

Great Basin Naturalist

A study was made of the distributions of native, terrestrial, vascular plants occurring in 50 local floras from throughout the Basin and Range and Colorado Plateau physiographic provinces of the southwestern United States. The objectives of the study were to objectively define and describe the floristic elements-assemblages of species with roughly coincident geographic distribution-occurring in the southwestern United States and to determine what such assemblages reveal about the floristic history of the region.

The total flora (native, terrestrial species only) of the Southwest is estimated at 5,458 species, 77% of which were recorded in 1 or more of the local …

Great Basin Naturalist

A new genus, Stylolidia, and two new species, Stylolidia pectinata n. sp. (type species) and Stylolidia cristata n. sp., from Malaysia are described and illustrated. A key to the males of the known species is also included.

Status And Distribution Of California Gull Nesting Colonies In Wyoming, Scott L. Findholt Jan 1986

Status And Distribution Of California Gull Nesting Colonies In Wyoming, Scott L. Findholt

Great Basin Naturalist

Historically, two California Gull nesting colonies existed in Wyoming. In 1984 there were six breeding locations consisting of 10 different colonies that included approximately 7,273 nests. The increase in the California Gull nesting population in the state is probably a consequence of man-caused environmental changes that have resulted in the creation of additional breeding habitat and new food sources.

Tasso's First Discourse On The Art Of Poetry As A Guide To The Gerusalemme Liberata, Lawrence F. Rhu Jan 1986

Tasso's First Discourse On The Art Of Poetry As A Guide To The Gerusalemme Liberata, Lawrence F. Rhu

Quidditas

The relationship between Tasso's early Discorsi dell'arte poetica and his Gerusalemme liberata needs clarification for a variety of reasons. The existence of a later poetics – the Discorsi del poema eroico, which modifies and expands the earlier version – has frequently side-tracked readers into a text that more properly pertains to Tasso's later version of his epic, the Gerusalemme conquistata. The availability of the second poetics in English, while the first remains inaccessible to readers without Italian, has also encouraged this inappropriate pairing. Further, the current vogue of literary theory tends to promote a view of Tasso's poetics …

Symbos Cavifrons (Artiodactyla: Bovidae) From Delta County, Colorado, Jerry N. Mcdonald

Great Basin Naturalist

A partial cranium belonging to the extinct woodland musk-ox, Symbos cavifrons, is reported from the headwaters of Oak Creek, Delta County, Colorado. This is the first cranium of the genus Symbos to be described from the Colorado Plateau, and it helps to define the southwest boundary of the known range of the genus.

Vegetational And Geomorphic Change On Snow Avalanche Paths, Glacier National Park, Montana, Usa, David R. Butler Apr 1985

Vegetational And Geomorphic Change On Snow Avalanche Paths, Glacier National Park, Montana, Usa, David R. Butler

Great Basin Naturalist

Six subalpine snow avalanche paths studied in 1975 were revisited in the summer of 1983, with the purpose of examining geomorphic and vegetational change that may have occurred during this eight-year period. Repeat photography and field reconnaissance were used to assess vegetational and geomorphic change. Vegetational responses to avalanches were apparent on several of the avalanche paths, generally by an increase in brush cover. Geomorphic changes were not apparent, suggesting that avalanches need not be geomorphically effective to initiate substantial vegetative disruption.

Aquatic Parameters And Life History Observations Of The Great Basin Spadefoot Toad In Utah, Peter Hovingh, Bob Benton, Dave Bornholdt Jan 1985

Aquatic Parameters And Life History Observations Of The Great Basin Spadefoot Toad In Utah, Peter Hovingh, Bob Benton, Dave Bornholdt

Great Basin Naturalist

The distribution and breeding habitats of the Great Basin spadefoot toad (Scaphiopus intermontanus) were investigated in the Bonneville Basin of western Utah. The permanent springs and man-made reservoirs used for breeding were largely found below the 1600 m elevation. The pH's ranged between 7.2 and 10.4 and the total dissolved solids between 170 and 4800 mg/l. The springs were less alkaline than the rain-filled reservoirs. The lack of aquatic vegetation was a common feature of the reservoirs and most of the springs. Observations of breeding without rain are noted as well as the lack of breeding with rain. …

The Fiction Of The "Livre" In Robert De Boron's Merlin, Stephen Maddux Jan 1985

The Fiction Of The "Livre" In Robert De Boron's Merlin, Stephen Maddux

Quidditas

Robert de Baron, thought to have been responsible for changing Chrétien's graal into a Christian relic and his tale of Perceval into a cycle, was also an innovator when it came to the convention of the bookish source for his story. Marie de France and Chrétien both were careful to supply their poems with some kind of external authority, which was often book-like, if not in fact always a written text. Chrétien twice refers to actual books; Marie de France's sources were presumably all oral, but she treats them as though they were written, that is, deserving the same treatment …

In Debt To Heritage Denmark, Hermansen-Jensen, Nysted, Otto G. Hoiberg, Reviewer, Elise Hermansen Olsen

The Bridge

This is the life story of the late Elise Hermansen Olsen, as portrayed in autobiographical materials edited admirably by her still-active husband, Dr. C. Arild Olsen. It mirrors the various interrelated ways in which Elise "lived her Danish heritage" - by use of the Danish language in speech and song, by a deep appreciation of that country's literature, by perpetuation of its characteristic customs, and by living a life geared to its distinctive values.
