Maya Harvest Festivals And The Book Of Mormon: Annual Farms Lecture, Allen J. Christenson
Maya Harvest Festivals And The Book Of Mormon: Annual Farms Lecture, Allen J. Christenson
Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011
Christenson, in the annual FARMS lecture deliverd on 27 February 1991, examined the Maya New Year's harvest festival, perhaps the most important public festival of the year. The festival coincided with the main corn harvest in mid-November and served as the New Year's Day of the solar calendar, when kingship was renewed. Christenson gave particular attention to the symbolic treatments of the evil god Mam; the ritual descent of the king, as representative of the god of life and resurrection, into the underworld; the king's ritual conflict with and defeat of the lords of the underworld (and of death); and …

The Doctrine Of The Resurrection As Taught In The Book Of Mormon, Robert J. Matthews
The Doctrine Of The Resurrection As Taught In The Book Of Mormon, Robert J. Matthews
BYU Studies
Robert J. Matthews discusses the doctrine of the resurrection of Jesus Christ as taught by the prophets of the Book of Mormon. Matthews analyzes key figures in the Book of Mormon and provides citations of what each figure said concerning Christ's resurrection. He examines the teachings of Lehi, Nephi, Jacob, Benjamin, Abinadi, Amulek, Alma, Samuel the Lamanite, Moroni, and finally the Savior Himself when he appeared as the resurrected Christ.

Lehi And El Niño: A Method Of Migration, David L. Clark
Lehi And El Niño: A Method Of Migration, David L. Clark
BYU Studies
David L. Clark combines what historians know about the migration of Lehi and his family to the Promised Land (from Arabia to the New World) with historical climate and weather patterns and currents in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. He discusses why Lehi, and later Nephi, may have chosen a certain path and timing to get to the Promised Land.

Taxonomy And Variation Of The Lopidea Nigridia Complex Of Western North America (Heteroptera: Miridae, Orthotylinae), Adam Asquith
Taxonomy And Variation Of The Lopidea Nigridia Complex Of Western North America (Heteroptera: Miridae, Orthotylinae), Adam Asquith
Great Basin Naturalist
External morphological variation in the Lopidea nigridia "complex" of western North America was examined using principal component analysis and showed continuous variation among populations in most characters. External morphology did not parallel paramere structure and did not substantiate previously recognized species. There was little correlation between dorsal coloration and paramere structure. Cluster analysis (UPGMA) using paramere and color characters failed to group populations coded as the same species and also failed to group all specimens of any one population. The variation in structure of the parameres and vesicae among populations of the nigridia complex was no greater than the interpopulational …
The Social Origins Of The Kirtland Mormons, Mark R. Grandstaff, Milton Vaughn Backman Jr.
The Social Origins Of The Kirtland Mormons, Mark R. Grandstaff, Milton Vaughn Backman Jr.
BYU Studies
Kirtland, Ohio, was settled mostly by New Englanders prior to the arrival of a group of Mormons (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) in 1831. The Mormons came from New York and New England. These settlers were part of a westward movement of people looking for more farmland and a better climate than was found in New England and New York. The Mormons who came to Kirtland were not transients; about 95 percent had moved two times before or fewer. This article looks at schooling, wealth, and religiosity of the Mormons in Kirtland. It includes diary …

Peter Bartley, Mormonism: The Prophet, The Book And The Cult, Daniel C. Peterson
Peter Bartley, Mormonism: The Prophet, The Book And The Cult, Daniel C. Peterson
Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011
Review of Mormonism: The Prophet, The Book and the Cult (1989), by Peter Bartley. Bartley attacks Mormonism and its sacred book, the Book of Mormon, which is not surprising when one notes the anti-Mormon sources he cosulted. Rigorous and well-grounded arguments are lacking, and sweepingly dogmatic assertions dominate. He faults the Book of Mormon on various claims as well as on stylistic grounds--he asserts that it appears to be written entirely by one person. This publication represents just one more anti-Mormon book.
