A Study Of African American Women And Their Perceptions Of Life In Utah, Jennifer Caye Demayo
A Study Of African American Women And Their Perceptions Of Life In Utah, Jennifer Caye Demayo
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine, through the use of the ethnographic interview (Spradley, 1979), residential preferences, as well as the stated reasons for relocation of African American women who live in a predominantly White, Utah Mormon culture. The "push and pull" factors that impacted the women's decisions to come to and/or remain in Utah were qualitatively analyzed in some detail. The end goal of the research was to determine whether Utah was perceived as a desirable residence by and for African American women.
Residential preference is a complex issue which requires an in depth explanation. The prominent …
Aberrant Mormon Settlers: The Homesteaders Of Highland, Utah, David T. Durfey
Aberrant Mormon Settlers: The Homesteaders Of Highland, Utah, David T. Durfey
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a history of the original thirty-seven homesteaders of Highland, Utah. It covers a period of about twenty-five years, 1875-1900. The study provides an example of a aberrant community which was not established in the same, distinctive style of settlement as the typical Mormon village. In addition it describes the relationship between the original residents and non-residents of Highland with the surrounding villages of Lehi, American Fork, and Alpine.
The Geographical Landscape Of Tabernacles In The Mormon Culture Region, Crystal Wride Jenson
The Geographical Landscape Of Tabernacles In The Mormon Culture Region, Crystal Wride Jenson
Theses and Dissertations
Although tabernacles do not hold the sacred meaning of Mormon temples, they are symbolic landmarks of the culture of the early Mormon Saints. Tabernacles were once an integral part of each community in which they were located. They were often the main buildings in the community, reflecting the coherent, orderly nature of a Mormon town. Today, many of the original tabernacles have been torn down and others are under the threat of destruction.
The first tabernacles built in the Mormon Culture Region were constructed in the 1850s. They were large meetinghouses built for the purpose of holding large general meetings. …

The Geographical Analysis Of Mormon Temple Sites In Utah, Garth R. Liston
The Geographical Analysis Of Mormon Temple Sites In Utah, Garth R. Liston
Theses and Dissertations
The first eight temple sites in Utah were studied to determine important geographical characteristics of each, and to test the hypothesis that Mormon temple sites conform to definitions of sacred space. President Brigham Young of the Church greatly influenced the selection of the first four temple sites, and the construction of each until his death in 1877. Claimed revelation from God to Young and other leaders and members of the Church, was evident concerning the temple sites. The later four temple sites of the twentieth century were approved by the First Presidency of the Church, but local Church leaders and …

Moral Lessons For Women Readers Of Jean Lemaire De Belges's Les Illustrations De Gaule Et Singularitez De Troye, Judy Kem
Quidditas
Jean Lemaire de Belges (1473-1525), poet and historiographer of the French and Burgundian courts of the early Renaissance, wrote his epic history of Troy, Les Illustrations de Gaule et singularitez de Troye (1511-1513), at the request of his patron, Margaret of Austria, to offer an "occupation voluptueuse, et non pas inutile" [sensual yet useful occupation] to the ladies of France (1:11). Lemaire dedicated each of the three books of his epic to a different noblewoman. Mercury, who narrates the prologues of all three volumes, identifies each noblewoman with one of the three goddesses of the Judgment of Paris: Margaret of …
Habitat Evaluation Procedure For Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep In The Intermountain West, Tom S. Smith, Jerran T. Flinders, David S. Winn
Habitat Evaluation Procedure For Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep In The Intermountain West, Tom S. Smith, Jerran T. Flinders, David S. Winn
Great Basin Naturalist
Several habitat evaluation procedures have been developed for bighorn sheep. However, none of these procedures specifically addresses the Rocky Mountain subspecies nor analyzes both the quantity and quality of potential bighorn habitat with regard to minimum viable population (MVP) criteria. This bighorn habitat evaluation procedure combines (1) a quantitative assessment of bighorn range to determine if there are adequate quantities of resources to support an MVP of bighorn sheep, and (2) a qualitative assessment of a range to predict the probable density of bighorns the range can support. Extensive literature review, intensive bighorn research, and a modeling tool, pattern recognition …

Evolutionary Differentiation Within The Northern Great Basin Pocket Gopher, Thomomys Townsendii. Ii. Genetic Variation And Biogeographic Considerations, Mary Anne Rogers
Evolutionary Differentiation Within The Northern Great Basin Pocket Gopher, Thomomys Townsendii. Ii. Genetic Variation And Biogeographic Considerations, Mary Anne Rogers
Great Basin Naturalist
Genetic variation across the known geographic range of Thomomys townsendii was examined by starch gel electrophoresis and nondifferentially stained karyotypes. All specimens examined had a diploid number of76, but some populations possessed one pair of acrocentric chromosomes in an otherwise biarmed karyotype. Electrophoretic analyses of 16 populations revealed Thomomys townsendii to be among the least variable of pocket gopher species studied. Of 27 loci examined, 17 were monomorphic and heterozygosity values were low (H = .000–.028, H¯ = .012). Genic differentiation between populations was also low (S = .896–.998, S¯ = .956) and revealed little concordance with current …
Site Characteristics And Habitat Requirements Of The Endangered Dwarf Bear-Claw Poppy (Arctomecon Humilis Coville, Papaveraceae), Deanna R. Nelson, Kimball T. Harper
Site Characteristics And Habitat Requirements Of The Endangered Dwarf Bear-Claw Poppy (Arctomecon Humilis Coville, Papaveraceae), Deanna R. Nelson, Kimball T. Harper
Great Basin Naturalist
Arctomecon humilis Cov. is a narrow endemic, confined to gypsiferous substrates derived from the Shnabkaib Member of the Moenkopi Formation in southwestern Utah. The characteristics of seven A. humilis sites were studied to define habitat requirements of the species. Both physical and biotic aspects of the habitat were analyzed; geology, soil chemistry, and physical properties, as well as vascular and nonvascular plant communities, were studied. Chemical and physical properties of these soils vary considerably from those supporting adjacent desert-shrub communities. The dominant vascular species on A. humilis sites are shadscale and Mormon tea. It was found that A. humilis occurred …
Evolutionary Differentiation Within The Northern Great Basin Pocket Gopher, Thomomys Townsendii. I. Morphological Variation, Mary Anne Rogers
Evolutionary Differentiation Within The Northern Great Basin Pocket Gopher, Thomomys Townsendii. I. Morphological Variation, Mary Anne Rogers
Great Basin Naturalist
Geographic and nongeographic variation in morphology was examined in Thomomys townsendii. A univariate analysis of external and cranial characters from a large population sample (66 adults; fusion of cranial sutures used as aging criteria) was used to assess variation among three adult age classes and between sexes. Only minor variation is apparent among age classes; however, sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Univariate and multivariate techniques were used to analyze external and cranial measurements and pelage characters for adults throughout the species range. These analyses show little to support the seven subspecific designations recognized by Davis (1937). The general pattern is …
