Environmental Modeling In An Event-Driven Multitasking Network Environment, G. Smiatek

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In order to provide fast analysis and forecast of a future state of a considered system, environmentalmodeling requires integration of different tools, data and methods. Using the example of the semi-empiricalbiogenic volatile organic compound emission model (seBVOC) the integration of numerical weather predictionmodel (NWP) output, Geographical Information System (GIS) and the seBVOC model with an event-drivenmultitasking network program is demonstrated. It is based on the Perl Object Environment (POE) and includesHTTP data request and download,Web services exposing GIS functionalities and the model run. The system isrun in parallel and in a collaborative event-driven way on several computer platforms connected to …

Developing An Oasis-Based Irrigation Management Tool For A Large Semi-Arid Mountainous Catchment In Morocco, Carmen De Jong, K. Makroum, G. Leavesley Jul 2006

Developing An Oasis-Based Irrigation Management Tool For A Large Semi-Arid Mountainous Catchment In Morocco, Carmen De Jong, K. Makroum, G. Leavesley

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This study is concerned with the management of water resources and development of a DSS (Decision Support System) in MMS (Modular Modelling System) for the semi-arid, mountainous Drâa catchment in SE Morocco. The catchment relies heavily on oasis irrigation in three different geographical units. These include firstly, the High Atlas mountains, secondly, the basin of Ouarzazate above the Mansour Eddahbi dam reservoir and thirdly the ancient date palmeries below the reservoir. In 1972 the dam was put into operation for hydroelectricity and irrigation. Following decades of drought the dam’s main function nowadays is irrigation. A DSS requires an efficient hydro-meteorological …

Autonomous Flood Sensorweb: Multi-Sensor Rapid Response And Early Flood Detection, Felipe Ip, J. M. Dohm, V. R. Baker, R. Brakenridge, A. G. Davies, Steve Chien Jul 2006

Autonomous Flood Sensorweb: Multi-Sensor Rapid Response And Early Flood Detection, Felipe Ip, J. M. Dohm, V. R. Baker, R. Brakenridge, A. G. Davies, Steve Chien

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Extreme floods have been reported to be more frequent partly due to global warming. As such, the necessity for timely detection and mapping of floods is increasingly important in order to protect lives and livelihoods. Floods affect large regions of the Earth and cannot be reliably predicted. Hydrological data from in-situ sensors are sparse and cannot map the full extent of flooding. The use of satellite-based information for assessing floods is not new. However, the problem with satellite remote sensing historically has been both the large areas affected and obtaining timely ground-based reception of satellite data. The Autonomous Sciencecraft Experiment …

Towards Better Water Governance: Putting Integrated Water Resource Management In Place, J. Myšiak, Carlo Giupponi Jul 2006

Towards Better Water Governance: Putting Integrated Water Resource Management In Place, J. Myšiak, Carlo Giupponi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Water is a finite, renewable, yet in certain circumstances depletable, natural resource with essential value for life. The uneven distribution of water resources, amplified by numerous conflicting water uses, constrains economic development and the wellbeing of humans. The excessive quantity of water as a result of land use and/or climate change (and thus at least partly accountable to human activities) poses additional threats. To ensure an efficient allocation and protection of water, a holistic (integrated/comprehensive) management based on the principles of the ecosystem approach was endorsed by a broad scientific and policy community. Such management was aimed at promoting pro-active, …

Dealing With Uncertainty And Sensitivity Issues In Process-Based Models Of Carbon And Nitrogen Cycles In Northern Forest Ecosystems, G. R. Larocque, J. S. Bhatti, A. M. Gordon, N. Luckai, Jinxun Liu, Shuguang Liu, P. A. Arp, C. -F Zhang, Alexander Komarov, Pavel Grabarnik, M. Wattenbach, C. Peng, Jianfeng Sun, Thomas White

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Many process-based models on carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles have been developed for northern forest ecosystems. These models are widely used to evaluate the long-term decisions in forest management dealing with effects like particulate pollution, productivity and climate change. Regarding climate change, one of the key questions that have sensitive political implications is whether northern forests will sequester atmospheric C or not. Whilst many process-based models have been tested for accuracy by evaluating or validating against observed data, few have dealt with the complexity of the incorporated procedures to estimate uncertainties associated with model predictions or the sensitivity of …

Uncertainty Management, Spatial And Temporal Reasoning, And Validation Of Intelligent Environmental Decision Support Systems, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè, Karina Gibert, Rick Sojda, Jean-Philippe Steyer, Peter Struss, Ignasi Rodríguez-Roda Jul 2006

Uncertainty Management, Spatial And Temporal Reasoning, And Validation Of Intelligent Environmental Decision Support Systems, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè, Karina Gibert, Rick Sojda, Jean-Philippe Steyer, Peter Struss, Ignasi Rodríguez-Roda

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

There are inherent open problems arising when developing and running Intelligent Environmental Decision Support Systems (IEDSS). During daily operation of IEDSS several open challenge problems appear. The uncertainty of data being processed is intrinsic to the environmental system, which is being monitored by several on-line sensors and off-line data. Thus, anomalous data values at data gathering level or even uncertain reasoning process at later levels such as in diagnosis or decision support or planning can lead the environmental process to unsafe critical operation states. At diagnosis level or even at decision support level or planning level, spatial reasoning or temporal …

Applying A Multi-Agent Model To Evaluate Effects Of Development Proposals And Growth Management Policies On Suburban Sprawl, M. G. Monticino, E. Brooks, T. Cogdill, M. F. Acevedo, B. Callicott

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Suburban and exurban sprawl is a major challenge facing regions worldwide. Residential sprawl and the accompanying commercial development stress municipalities providing services such as clean water, waste management, and fire and police protection. The dynamics of expanding development is influenced by complex interactions among human stakeholders and how stakeholders respond to feedback from the consequences of development decisions. This paper presents a multi-agent model coupled with a GIS-based land-use potential model that can be used by municipal policy makers to examine development scenarios. The model represents a region within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex (Texas, U.S.A.) facing intense residential development. Development …

Ecohydraulics In The Mississippi River: Freshwater Mussel Dynamics Model, J. A. Daraio, Y. Morales-Chaves, Arthur E. Mynett, L. Weber

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The family Unionidae (freshwater mussels) is geographically diverse with species found worldwide; their greatest diversity is found in North America. Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are an exotic species introduced into North America in the 1980’s that has since become a threat to economic interests and native mussel species in the region. IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering and WL|Delft Hydraulics are developing a numerical model of mussel population dynamics for the purpose of analyzing alternative management strategies of zebra mussels and Unionidae in the Upper Mississippi River (UMR). The Mussel Dynamics Model (MDM) simulates interaction of mussels and the hydraulic environment. This paper …

A New Raster-Based Spatial Modelling System: 5d Environment, S. Mazzoleni, F. Giannino, M. Mulligan, D. Heathfield, M. Colandrea, M. Nicolazzo, M. D'Aquino Jul 2006

A New Raster-Based Spatial Modelling System: 5d Environment, S. Mazzoleni, F. Giannino, M. Mulligan, D. Heathfield, M. Colandrea, M. Nicolazzo, M. D'Aquino

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The functional description of natural systems requires the representation of different classes of processes including chemical, biochemical, and physical functions, with or without their spatial representation. On the other hand, there are several cases where a realistic representation of the process dynamics needs a spatially explicit implementation of the model (eg. hydrological flows, fire propagation, pollution diffusion, etc.). In more general terms, and for different scientific fields, scaling problems and the issue of linking dynamic and spatial processes require an integrated logic and appropriate software solutions. Different tools aimed at implementing spatial modelling capability (PCRaster, SME, SimARC) have not yet …

To Know The One True God: Reconciling The God Of The Old Testament With The God Of The New Testament, Kelly D. Newman Jun 2006

To Know The One True God: Reconciling The God Of The Old Testament With The God Of The New Testament, Kelly D. Newman

Theses and Dissertations

There is a popular misconception in the world that Jehovah is too severe on occasion while Jesus Christ is always kind and merciful. The Latter-day Saint belief that Jehovah and Jesus are the same person presents a supposed conflict. There has not been much written on this subject by either non-Latter-day Saints or Latter-day Saints, thus, this thesis represents a unique contribution to a common perception prevalent in many Christian circles. The research of this thesis shows that the misconception is based on three problems: first, a misinterpretation of biblical stories in both the Old and New Testament; second, a …

Delimitating Species Boundaries Within The Liomys Pictus- Spectabilis Complex (Rodentia: Heteromyidae), Victoria L. Vance May 2006

Delimitating Species Boundaries Within The Liomys Pictus- Spectabilis Complex (Rodentia: Heteromyidae), Victoria L. Vance

Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies based on morphological, allozymic and mitochondrial sequence data have indicated that Liomys pictus is paraplyletic relative to L. spectabilis. The purpose of this study was to determine the species boundaries that exist within this complex. I estimated phylogenetic relationships within this complex using sequence data from 1,140 bp of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b gene and two nuclear introns from engrailed protein (190 bp) and myosin heavy chain (254 bp) genes for approximately 712 individuals representing 82 localities across the range of L. pictus and L. spectabilis. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian analyses suggest that there are …

A Latter-Day Saint Colloquium On The Gospel Of Judas: Media And Message, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel May 2006

A Latter-Day Saint Colloquium On The Gospel Of Judas: Media And Message, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel

BYU Studies

Due to the popularity of Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code and the volume of media attention directed at the Gospel of Judas, both of which suggest searching for hidden meanings in religious traditions and alternative ways of viewing Bible texts and mainstream Christianity, BYU Studies addresses the Gospel of Judas through a series of articles. Richard Neitzel Holzapfel introduces the issue by explaining the Latter-day Saint perspective: some scholars question the New Testament narrative and wonder what other ancient, lost documents were left out, but Latter-day Saints view the Gospel of Judas as a text written by apostate …

The Chipped Stone Tool Industries Of Blackman Eddy, Belize, Matthew Patrick Yacubic Apr 2006

The Chipped Stone Tool Industries Of Blackman Eddy, Belize, Matthew Patrick Yacubic

Theses and Dissertations

One of the most significant finds at the site of Blackman Eddy, Belize, is a series of superimposed structures that date between 1200 B.C.-A.D. 600 (calibrated). Because it was continuously occupied for over 1800 years, this site provides a unique opportunity to examine long-term socio-economic changes in the eastern Maya lowlands. This thesis is a diachronic study of the chipped stone tool artifacts of Blackman Eddy using technological, attribute, and use-wear analysis. The data collected for this study were examined to see what types of raw materials were used in tool production, what types of tools were produced, how they …

A Study Of Islamic Leadership Theory And Practice In K-12 Islamic Schools In Michigan, Adnan Ibrahim Aabed Apr 2006

A Study Of Islamic Leadership Theory And Practice In K-12 Islamic Schools In Michigan, Adnan Ibrahim Aabed

Theses and Dissertations

Effective leadership in Islamic schools involves the incorporation of Islamic principles in the leadership behaviors and practices. With so much literature about the need of Islamic leadership in Islamic institutions in the United States, the problem addressed by the study was whether school principals in Islamic schools exhibited and led these schools according to the principles of Islamic leadership. The study described leadership approaches used by school principals in Islamic schools and how those leadership approaches were influenced by Islamic leadership principles, comparing the Islamic leadership principles derived from the literature with the leadership principles of principals of Islamic schools. …

Considering The Relationship Between Religion And Psychology, Robert L. Gleave, Dallas R. Jensen, Roger Belisle, Philip L. Nelson

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

The interaction between Religion and Psychology, one of the founding principles of AMCAP, has been addressed several times in AMCAP forums (De Hoyos, 1982) and elsewhere (Richards & Bergin, 2005; Sorensen, 1981; Sperry & Shafranske, 2005). Many may have entered the helping professions to fulfill personal religious needs a well as service goals. The long standing dialogue on the topic of Religion in the helping professions will not end with this article, nor should it ever end in this life. We believe that examining the ways in which Religion and Psychology interface deserves the attention and effort of many minds, …

A Grammatical Description Of The Early Classic Maya Hieroglyphic Inscriptions, Daniel A. Law Mar 2006

A Grammatical Description Of The Early Classic Maya Hieroglyphic Inscriptions, Daniel A. Law

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to describe the grammatical system of Classical Ch'olti', the language of the Classic Maya hieroglyphic inscriptions, as attested in inscriptions of the Early Classic (approximately AD 200-600). Around 300 Lowland Maya Hieroglyphic inscriptions have been dated to the Early Classic or before, nearly one third of these remain unpublished. Previous work on the monumental inscriptions of the Early Classic (Mathews 1985; Proskouriakoff 1950) has examined Early Classic monuments primarily as works of art. Mora-Marin (2001) examined the language of inscriptions found on early portable texts, a small subset of the corpus here examined. In …

Quantifying Chlorophyll A Content Through Remote Sensing: A Pilot Study Of Utah Lake, Tiana Davis Mar 2006

Quantifying Chlorophyll A Content Through Remote Sensing: A Pilot Study Of Utah Lake, Tiana Davis

Theses and Dissertations

Utah Lake is a really large but shallow lake located in the arid environment of the Western United States. Due to a variety of factors it is listed by the Environmental Protection Agency as an "impaired water body" and must be closely monitored. Because of its large extent and shallow depth the water quality is heterogeneous and can change rapidly. This means that traditional water quality monitoring methods, which require large investments in field personnel, equipment, and water sample analysis, cannot produce a model that is truly representative of the entire water body. This thesis examines the feasibility of using …

The Art And Science Of Discontinuous Innovation: A Case Study In Product Reinvention, Daniel C. Smoot Mar 2006

The Art And Science Of Discontinuous Innovation: A Case Study In Product Reinvention, Daniel C. Smoot

Theses and Dissertations

Divergence of new and old technologies is a source of tremendous innovation potential. As the dizzying pace of technological innovation accelerates indefinitely into tomorrow, not only do new paths diverge exponentially; doors already opened are increasingly abandoned for the allure of things undiscovered. Mature, late-stage life-cycle products left behind in today's fast-paced world open the floodgates to reinvention. This paper tests the hypothesis that innovativeness can be encouraged through the learning and application of universal innovation principles and processes. The implications of this research area are far-reaching. If innovation can be encouraged, then it can likely be taught. If it …

Medium Access Control And Networking Protocols For The Intra-Body Network, Eric Thomas Stucki Mar 2006

Medium Access Control And Networking Protocols For The Intra-Body Network, Eric Thomas Stucki

Theses and Dissertations

Biomedical applications offer an exciting growth opportunity for wireless sensor networks. However, radio frequency communication is problematic in hospital environments that are susceptible to interference in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands. Also, RF is inherently insecure as eavesdroppers can easily pick up signals. The Intra-Body Network (IBNet) proposes a novel communication model for biomedical sensor networks. It seeks the convenience of wireless communication while avoiding interference and privacy concerns associated with RF. IBNet's solution is to utilize a subject's own body tissue as a transmission medium. Assuming that transmissions are contained within the body, IBNet solves otherwise complex …

Long-Term Fire History In Great Basin Sagebrush Reconstructed From Macroscopic Charcoal In Spring Sediments, Newark Valley, Nevada, Scott Mensing, Stephanie Livingston, Pat Barker Feb 2006

Long-Term Fire History In Great Basin Sagebrush Reconstructed From Macroscopic Charcoal In Spring Sediments, Newark Valley, Nevada, Scott Mensing, Stephanie Livingston, Pat Barker

Western North American Naturalist

We use macroscopic charcoal analysis to reconstruct fire history in sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata var. wyomingensis and A. tridentata var. tridentata), in Newark Valley, Nevada. We analyzed charcoal at continuous 1-cm intervals (~7–127 years), and pollen at 2- to 10-cm intervals (~70–263 years) in a core spanning the last 5500 cal yr BP (calendar years before present). A charcoal peak in the historic period was associated with a >1400-ha fire dated to 1986 that burned in the watershed. We reconstructed the prehistoric fire history by inferring fires from similar charcoal peaks that were significantly greater than the background charcoal …

Transverse And Longitudinal Variation In Woody Riparian Vegetation Along A Montane River, Jonathan M. Friedman, Gregor T. Auble, Edmund D. Andrews, Gwen Kittel, Richard F. Madole, Eleanor R. Griffin, Tyler M. Allred

Western North American Naturalist

This study explores how the relationship between flow and riparian vegetation varies along a montane river. We mapped occurrence of woody riparian plant communities along 58 km of the San Miguel River in southwestern Colorado. We determined the recurrence interval of inundation for each plant community by combining step-backwater hydraulic modeling at 4 representative reaches with Log-Pearson analysis of 4 stream gaging stations. Finally, we mapped bottomland surficial geology and used a Geographic Information System to overlay the coverages of geology and vegetation. Plant communities were distinctly arrayed along the hydrologic gradient. The Salix exigua Nuttall (sandbar willow) community occurred …

Evaluating Plant Invasions From Both Habitat And Species Perspectives, Geneva W. Chong, Yuka Otsuki, Thomas J. Stohlgren, Debra Guenther, Paul Evangelista, Cynthia Villa, Alycia Waters

Western North American Naturalist

We present an approach to quantitatively assess nonnative plant invasions at landscape scales from both habitat and species perspectives. Our case study included 34 nonnative species found in 142 plots (0.1 ha) in 14 vegetation types within the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument, Utah. A plot invasion index, based on nonnative species richness and cover, showed that only 16 of 142 plots were heavily invaded. A species invasive index, based on frequency, cover, and number of vegetation types invaded, showed that only 7 of 34 plant species were highly invasive. Multiple regressions using habitat characteristics (moisture index, elevation, soil P, native …
