Peter Ludwig Panum And The Danish School Of Epidemiology, Craig A. Melgaard, Amanda L. Golbeck
Peter Ludwig Panum And The Danish School Of Epidemiology, Craig A. Melgaard, Amanda L. Golbeck
The Bridge
One of the major historical questions of public health has been, "What causes epidemic outbreaks of disease?" Epidemiology, the basic science of public health, has only relatively recently emerged from a period during which epidemic outbreaks were attributed to miasmas. Miasma theory, a common folk theory of disease ascribed to by many ancient writers, was codified by Lancisi in 1717 in De Noxiis Paludum Effiuviis. This text held that bad air quality, supposedly caused by decaying organic matter, made those who inhaled it ill. "Miasma" was believed to pass from cases to susceptibles in those diseases considered to be contagious …
The Efects Of Cryptocurrency Wealth On Household Consumption And Investment, Darren Aiello, Scott R. Baker, Tetyana Balyuk, Marco Di Maggio, Mark J. Johnson, Jason Kotter
The Efects Of Cryptocurrency Wealth On Household Consumption And Investment, Darren Aiello, Scott R. Baker, Tetyana Balyuk, Marco Di Maggio, Mark J. Johnson, Jason Kotter
Faculty Publications
This paper uses transaction-level bank and credit card data to identify cryptocurrency investors and assess the impact of crypto wealth fuctuations on household consumption, as well as on investments in other assets. We fnd an $0.09 MPC from crypto gains, exceeding most previous estimates from unrealized equity gains. However, crypto investors are mostly also active equity investors, with many similar consumption patterns across gains from both asset classes. Households sell cryptocurrencies to increase discretionary and housing expenditures, with the latter causing local house price appreciation.
Linguistic Behavior And Religious Activity, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, David Bowie
Linguistic Behavior And Religious Activity, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, David Bowie
Faculty Publications
Studies have found that Mormons and non-Mormons in Utah exhibit significant linguistic differences. We break this down further by investigating whether there are also differences between Mormons who actively participate in the religion and those who do not, and find significant differences with a medium or larger effect size between the groups for multiple variables. We conclude that when investigating the linguistic correlates of religious affiliation in a community, it is vital to elicit not just respondents’ religious affiliations, but also their level of participation within that religion.

New Records Of Marginal Locations For American Pika (Ochotona Princeps) In The Western Great Basin, Constance I. Millar, Robert D. Westfall, Diane L. Delany
Western North American Naturalist
We describe 46 new site records documenting occupancy by American pika (Ochotona princeps) at 21 locations from 8 mountain regions in the western Great Basin, California, and Nevada. These locations comprise a subset of sites selected from regional surveys to represent marginal, isolated, or otherwise atypical pika locations, and to provide information for assessing environmental tolerance limits. Several locations are known from historic observations (Madeline Plain, Bodie Mtns., Wassuk Mtns., Mono Craters) and are included here to update current status. Site elevations range from 1848 m to 3392 m; relative to the broad range of pika sites in …

Tutor Assisted Vocabulary Support: Easing The Vocabulary Load For Burundian Refugees Studying For The U.S. Citizenship Test, Eleanor Anne Clark
Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this thesis was to develop vocabulary materials to supplement those already in use for emergent literate Burundian refugees preparing for the U.S. Citizenship Test. These learners study in conjunction with the International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City, Utah, and with volunteer tutors who help them study. The flashcards and supporting activities were designed to better enable tutors to teach learners highly-dense vocabulary items, as well as to provide vocabulary scaffolding support for both learners and tutors and to increase depth of vocabulary knowledge with the target vocabulary. The U.S. Citizenship Test Vocabulary Flashcards and Vocabulary Support …
Nísia Floresta: Setting A Foundation For Feminist Literature In Brazil, Rachel Davidson Skinner
Nísia Floresta: Setting A Foundation For Feminist Literature In Brazil, Rachel Davidson Skinner
Theses and Dissertations
Many historians and literary critics recognize the nineteenth-century Brazilian author, Nísia Floresta, as the first feminist in Brazil. "Nísia Floresta é considerada a precursora dos ideais feministas no Brasil. Desde o início de sua carreira literária, a defesa dos direitos femininos foi o tema mais recorrente em sua obra"(Castro 250). Her works, published in Brazil and also in France and Italy, influenced women across borders. This thesis will address the discourse on maternity and education found in her works Opúsculo humanitário, Direitos das mulheres e injustiças dos homens, A mulher, and Conselhos à minha filha. Focusing on gender equality and …
Material Geography, Mountains, And A-Nationalism In Thurman's The Blacker The Berry, Stephanie Jean Burns
Material Geography, Mountains, And A-Nationalism In Thurman's The Blacker The Berry, Stephanie Jean Burns
Theses and Dissertations
Scholars over the last two decades or so have become increasingly interested in methods of interpreting history, society, and literature that do not rely on nationalistic paradigms. One vein of the transnational analytic trend is interested not only in the multiplicity of cultural geographies but also in the materiality of geography. Such critical work is extremely helpful in challenging myopic nationalist readings; yet the materiality of geography used as a theoretical lens has even greater potential. Using geographical formations as a basis for literary analysis can yield a theoretical base that has nothing to do with the borders of nations …
Revisiting The Seven Lineages Of The Book Of Mormon And The Seven Tribes Of Mesoamerica, Diane E. Wirth
Revisiting The Seven Lineages Of The Book Of Mormon And The Seven Tribes Of Mesoamerica, Diane E. Wirth
BYU Studies
The number seven was significant to the pre-Columbian communities of Mesoamerica, as it was in the Book of Mormon. A pan-Mesoamerica legend tells of a core people descended from seven tribes, which may coincide with the seven lineages mentioned three times in the Book of Mormon. While no verifiable evidence ties these two accounts together, a closer look at the Mesoamerican legend is warranted. This article examines numerous depictions of the seven tribes in Mesoamerican art contained in their lienzos (pieces of fabric with historical drawings or maps), illustrated books called codices, and post-Conquest documents that were shown to and …
Canadian Family Leisure, Family Functioning, And Family Satisfaction: A Family Perspective, Shaun C. Nua
Canadian Family Leisure, Family Functioning, And Family Satisfaction: A Family Perspective, Shaun C. Nua
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to further examine the relationship between family leisure variables and the dependent variables of family functioning and satisfaction with family life among a broad, national sample of Canadian families using the Core and Balance framework. Specifically, this study examined how both family leisure involvement (core and balance) and family leisure satisfaction contributed to the explanation of variance in family functioning and satisfaction with family life. Because the data were nested in families, this study accounted for family-level variance by incorporating mixed modeling. The sample consisted of 943 families across Canada including one parent and …
Developing An Architecture Framework For Cloud-Based, Multi-User, Finite Element Pre-Processing, Jared Calvin Briggs
Developing An Architecture Framework For Cloud-Based, Multi-User, Finite Element Pre-Processing, Jared Calvin Briggs
Theses and Dissertations
This research proposes an architecture for a cloud-based, multi-user FEA pre-processing system, where multiple engineers can access and operate on the same model in a parallel environment. A prototype is discussed and tested, the results of which show that a multi-user preprocessor, where all computing is done on a central server that is hosted on a high performance system, provides significant benefits to the analysis team. These benefits include a shortened preprocessing time, and potentially higher-quality models.

Lds Geography On A Micro-Scale, Nathan Simmons, Dr. Samuel Otterstrom
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Recently the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has gained world-wide recognition for the high standards the Church promotes, but perhaps even more so for the rapid growth and expansion it has experienced. Much of this spread is due to the Church’s policy of active proselytizing, a force which fuels the spatial diffusion of church membership. It is therefore valuable to study the spatial diffusion of the LDS faith throughout the world to better understand the factors that influence the distribution of church membership throughout the world, and that promote its growth.

Utah County Government Study, Amanda K. Tammen, Dr. Richard H. Jackson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Glamorous Presidential, Senatorial, and Congressional campaigns garner airtime, contributions, and groupies. Any observant constituent would believe that the aforementioned elected officials influence their lives the most. However, local elected and appointed officials have a greater impact on residents’ lives. By far, the least understood responsibilities are those at the County level. In 1832 Alexis de Tocqueville stated, “The County becomes the great administrative center and the intermediary between the government and the plain citizen.” Today many can name their city’s mayor. But most cannot name even one of their elected county commissioners.
The Impact Of Light Rail On Land Use In The Salt Lake Valley, Kenneth K. Rencher, Dr. Richard H. Jackson
The Impact Of Light Rail On Land Use In The Salt Lake Valley, Kenneth K. Rencher, Dr. Richard H. Jackson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In 2001 The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) completed the first phase of a new light rail system, TRAX, stretching from Downtown Salt Lake City south to Sandy. Two years later, an east-west line was added to connect to the University of Utah and the U of U Medical Center. One of the justifications for these projects was that the creation of a light rail system would be a catalyst to economic development in the areas around the tracks and stations. This study examines the initial impacts on housing densities, commercial and retail development, and property values along the existing TRAX …
Tolerance Values And Effects Of Selected Environmental Determinants On Caddisfly (Trichoptera) Distribution In Northwest And North Central Washington, Usa, Dean W. Blinn, David E. Ruiter
Tolerance Values And Effects Of Selected Environmental Determinants On Caddisfly (Trichoptera) Distribution In Northwest And North Central Washington, Usa, Dean W. Blinn, David E. Ruiter
Western North American Naturalist
Caddisflies were collected at 181 wall seep, stream, river, and lake habitats in 7 counties in northwest and north central Washington over a 6-year period. From 17,405 specimens, we identified 164 adult caddisfly species within 62 genera and 16 families. Twenty taxa were new state records, bringing the number of species currently reported from Washington to 230. Species assemblages were compared to altitude, physicochemical factors, aquatic habitats, and land use (urban, agriculture, and forest) on the west and east sides of the North Cascade Range. Species richness showed significant positive correlations to altitude and pH and showed significant negative correlations …
Ringtail (Bassariscus Astutus) Noninvasive Survey Methods, Density, And Occupancy In Central New Mexico, Usa, Robert L. Harrison
Ringtail (Bassariscus Astutus) Noninvasive Survey Methods, Density, And Occupancy In Central New Mexico, Usa, Robert L. Harrison
Western North American Naturalist
I tested 3 hair-collection devices used for population surveys of ringtails (Bassariscus astutus): PVC pipes, modified cage traps, and triangular Coroplast® tunnels. Coroplast tunnels were the most efficient, with hair obtained by 92% of tunnels tested on radio-collared ringtails. I used the tunnels to survey ringtails on the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico. Probability of detection in areas where ringtails were present was 74% (95% CI 0.56–0.86). Population density was estimated to be 0.17–0.33 ringtails · km–2 and occupancy (Ψ) by ringtails was 0.56 (95% CI 0.35–0.75).

The Marvelous American Reality: Making A Case For Carpentier’S Magical Realism In Latin American Music, Erika Edwards, Dr. Arden Hopkin, Dr. George Handley
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In 1949 the Nobel Prize-winning Cuban novelist and musicologist, Alejo Carpentier, published his essay on lo real maravilloso Americano, an aggressively American discussion of the theory now known as magical realism. Carpentier refers to the German art critic Franz Roh (who initially coined the term in reference to post-expressionist painting in 1925), but diverges and defends magical realism as a uniquely Latin American phenomenon. While the world has latched onto Magical Realism as a critical literary theory, it is undeniably the Latin American authors and artists who have embraced, embodied and defined the practice of it. Carpentier asserts that the …

Discovering Russian Research: Digitizing Local And Family Historical Documents, Kathryn Pope Blomberg, Thom Edlund
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As a student of Family History Research with Russian language skills, I have become very interested in learning the process of research for the areas that have been controlled by either the Czars or the USSR. Thus, I decided to go on an internship to a Russian speaking country to compliment my studies in Imperial Russian and Soviet genealogical research. Although I am a novice or maybe especially since I am a novice I felt this would be very beneficial to my studies. My faculty mentor Thom Edlund and I developed a project that would enable me to further my …
Strangers In A Strange Land: The Phenomenon Of Migration In South Africa, Stephen J. Spiegelhalter, Dr. Daniel Nielson
Strangers In A Strange Land: The Phenomenon Of Migration In South Africa, Stephen J. Spiegelhalter, Dr. Daniel Nielson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The result of the funding from this grant is a preliminary insight into the phenomenon of migration in South Africa. While interesting in and of itself, it actually comprises an important component of a larger project—an honors thesis on the study of international migration, its effects on the migrating population, and its effects on the host state. This study focuses on the parallel situations of the United States and South Africa. Further, it specifically examines the interplay of domestic economic and political conditions and public sentiment regarding immigration legislation. This topic continues to occupy the foreground of American politics with …
