Studies Of Some Reactions Of Quinoxaline, 2-Methyl-, And 2,3-Dimethylquinoxaline, Delos Edward Bown Jan 1949

Studies Of Some Reactions Of Quinoxaline, 2-Methyl-, And 2,3-Dimethylquinoxaline, Delos Edward Bown

Theses and Dissertations

Although many compounds have been prepared which contain the heterocyclic nucleus known as the quinoxaline nucleus, very little fundamental experimentation has been reported by way of expanding the chemistry of quinoxaline beyond the basic condensation reaction and its valuable use as a means of characterization, for example, the reaction of vicinal diketones with o-phenylenediamine. Also, no know effort has been made to assemble the chemistry of the quinoxalines into one paper for ready reference. Additional interest is concerned with the chemotherapeutic value of basically substituted quinoxalines^1; however, this aspect of the problem will not be discussed. The chemistry of quinoxaline …

An Investigation Of Phosphate Adsorption By The Clays Montmorillonite And Kaolinite /|Cby Gordon Richard Bradford, G. R. Bradford Jun 1948

An Investigation Of Phosphate Adsorption By The Clays Montmorillonite And Kaolinite /|Cby Gordon Richard Bradford, G. R. Bradford

Theses and Dissertations

Clay minerals have widespread application in industry and play an important role in plant life (2, 17). It is the adsorptive capacity of clay which determines largely its importance to man (2). The purpose of this investigation is to interpret the mechanism of adsorption of the phosphate anion by the two clay minerals montmorillonite and kaolinite. This particular system was singled out for two reasons: 1. It has agricultural significance. 2. It is believed that if the particular phosphate adsorption mechanism is understood it will aid in an understanding of many other adsorption phenomena associated with clay.

A Study Of Fossil Resins In Huntington Canyon Coal, Ross D. Gardner Jun 1948

A Study Of Fossil Resins In Huntington Canyon Coal, Ross D. Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

The object of this investigation was to determine whether or not a certain sample of raw resin, collected by Mr. Adriaan Nagelvoort from coal from Huntington Canyon, Emery County, Utah, could be separated into more than one fraction with each fraction having distinctly different properties. Three methods of separation were attempted: (l) Separation of specific gravity fractions, (2) separation by use of solvents, and (3) chromatographic separation. Properties determined as a means of establishing any differences in the resins were: solubility, softening points, acid numbers, and iodine numbers.

History Of The Cotton Mission And Cotton Culture In Utah, Ivan J. Barrett Jan 1947

History Of The Cotton Mission And Cotton Culture In Utah, Ivan J. Barrett

Theses and Dissertations

The writer, being interested in the agricultural project of cotton growing in early Dixie, and finding scarcely anything written on the subject, has gone into the original sources, histories, journals, diaries, etc., and found a reservoir of enlightenment regarding cotton culture in Utah's Dixie. He has tried to assemble from the most important sources, an informative yet interesting study of cotton culture in Utah. The writer in no wise pretends to have exhausted the subject, nor to have reached all the sources. Many of those early cotton growers who did most to produce this staple, kept no record of their …

History Of Drama In Ogden, Beth Browning Jan 1947

History Of Drama In Ogden, Beth Browning

Theses and Dissertations

Many cultural histories have been written of Utah, but not one of Weber County. The purpose of this thesis is to develop the history of drama in Weber County. Particular interest is given to the stage and its evolution. Also, I include the outstanding leaders of this art, because they are the builders of this history. The hypothesis is that the present-day drama owes much to our pioneers of Weber County. This thesis is written in commemoration of these pioneers for our Centennial Year, 1947.

Studies In The Determination Of Iodine In Soils Organic Materials, And Waters, Russell T. Lundell Aug 1946

Studies In The Determination Of Iodine In Soils Organic Materials, And Waters, Russell T. Lundell

Theses and Dissertations

A summary of the literature on the nutritional value of iodine in the diet of various forms of life is given. The majority of evidence indicates that iodine is an essential element in plant and animal nutrition. It functions particularly in animal metabolism in the form of thyroxine. The occurrence of iodine in a nature has been briefly discussed. Investigations made in this regard indicate iodine to be almost universally distributed in very minute amounts. Most iodine salts are soluble in water and their distribution is affected by water movements. Results of iodine determinations made during the course of this …

The External Male Genitalia Of Some Rhynchophora, Arthur F. Bruhn May 1946

The External Male Genitalia Of Some Rhynchophora, Arthur F. Bruhn

Theses and Dissertations

Today there is an increasing recognition among taxonomists of the importance of consideration of the complete morphology of insects in classifying them and in arrangming them in their logical phylogenetic sequence. Regarding the Rhynohophora, with which this paper is concerned, some progress toward a more complete understanding has been made. In 1912 Sharp and Muir made a study of the male genital tube of the coleoptera in general and observed that the various specializations they noted in the forms of Rhynohophora examined would doubtless be of future significance. Tanner in 1927 made a similar important study of the female genitalia …

A Historical Study Of The Exploration Of Utah Valley And The Story Of Fort Utah, Ray C. Colton Jan 1946

A Historical Study Of The Exploration Of Utah Valley And The Story Of Fort Utah, Ray C. Colton

Theses and Dissertations

The exploration of Utah Valley and the history of Fort Utah is the story of the conquest and colonization of the American frontier. Discovered in the days of Western expansion, the Valley was identified with the principal factors in the development of the Intermountain West. It heard the chant of the gray robed Franciscan priests, became a favorite haunt of the trail blazing fur trapper and trader, was the site of the ancient rendezvous of the Indian, saw the gold seekers trudge wearily on to California, and with the founding of Fort Utah served as the springboard of Southern Utah …

A Study Of Form And Content For A Laboratory Manual To Be Used By Students In General Chemistry Laboratory, Berne P. Broadbent Jan 1946

A Study Of Form And Content For A Laboratory Manual To Be Used By Students In General Chemistry Laboratory, Berne P. Broadbent

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation was carried out for general chemistry classes in which recitation and laboratory work are closely integrated and in which very close supervision is given to laboratory classes. Results indicate that there are fewer failures under these conditions if students do individual work. Students receiving grades of over 80% seem to work just as effectively in pairs as they do when working individually, but about 5% who fail when working in pairs could, apparently obtain grades above 60% if they did individual work. The formal full statement type of report is substantially more effective than the questionaire report as …

An Analysis Of Twelve Speeches Of Parley Parker Pratt, Mormon Orator, Morris M. Clinger Jan 1946

An Analysis Of Twelve Speeches Of Parley Parker Pratt, Mormon Orator, Morris M. Clinger

Theses and Dissertations

The chief purpose of this investigation is to determine the elements of speech style, the motive appeals, and the use of the elements of interest which play the most characteristic roles in twelve of Parley P. Pratt's sermons. While all the speeches that Pratt delivered have not been studied, since there are likely hundreds of them of which we have no record, it is thought that this study is sufficiently broad to warrant the conclusions that the writer has drawn.

A brief biography is included as a part of this study that a better understanding of the man might be …

The North American Species Of Smilacina, Desma H. Galway May 1945

The North American Species Of Smilacina, Desma H. Galway

Theses and Dissertations

This paper is the result of a taxonomic study of the species of the genus Smilacina occurring naturally in North America north of Mexico. In the past it has been difficult to make satisfactory determinations of members of this genus from existing manuals, especially among western forms. West of the great plains the great diversity in environmental conditions has given rise to a diversity in form of the species that are widely distributed. Many of these forms have been given specific or varietal names recently, and as no comprehensive work on the genus has been done since most of these …

Mural Of The Ground Breaking Ceremony For The St. George Latter-Day Saint Temple, J. Roman Andrus

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this work was to plan and execute a mural for the Latter Day Saint Temple at St. George, Utah, depicting the ground breaking ceremony for the building of the Temple. The picturization of the event should be historically true, so far as possible, without sacrificing quality of design. Value, pattern, color, and idea should conform to the character and design of the building, and to the ceremonies performed therein.

The Influence Of Some Alkali Salts In The Presence Of Various Concentrations Of Calcium On The Growth Of Sporobolus Cryptandrus, Vaughn A. Clayton May 1942

The Influence Of Some Alkali Salts In The Presence Of Various Concentrations Of Calcium On The Growth Of Sporobolus Cryptandrus, Vaughn A. Clayton

Theses and Dissertations

This study deals with the reactions of Sporobolus cryptandrus to various concentrations of Utah's most common alkali salts. Its purpose is to determine the effects of various concentrations of sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, and sodium sulphate on the growth and fruiting of Sporobolus cryptandrus, and to determine to what extent, if any, various levels of calcium exert a protective influence against the toxicity of these three salts. In addition to the experimental work a field of study was conducted for the purpose of determining the concentrations of total salts found in soils supporting a good growth of Sporobolus cryptandrus.

Theses and Dissertations

This work is presented for the purpose of contributing to a more accurate understanding of woman's place in the philosophy of Mormonism, and as a basis for further study on this problem.

The writer has not attempted to prove any particular hypothesis regarding Mormon women but has presented data which give an historical account of woman's status in the Church and among Mormon people during the first fifteen years of the organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The writer does not claim to have made any particularly new discoveries regarding Mormon women but rather to have …

Study Of The Aquatic And Semiaquatic Coleoptera In The State Of Utah, Harry P. Chandler May 1941

Study Of The Aquatic And Semiaquatic Coleoptera In The State Of Utah, Harry P. Chandler

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to discover and make known the species of aquatic and semiaquatic Coleopters of the sub-order ADEPHAGA which occur in Utah and to give something of their distribution, environment and habits whenever possible. When ever possible the original description or a description from a recent revision has been included for each species. Descriptions given in recent revisions have been regarded as more desirable because they describe the species in comparison with its nearest relatives, while many fo the original descriptions were very incomplete and could not be used to separate many of our present species …
