Design Of A Multiple Degree Of Freedom, Force Reflective Hand Master/Slave With A High Mobility Wrist, Tim Mclain, S C. Jacobsen, E K. Iversen, C C. Davis, D M. Potter

Faculty Publications

The Center for Engineering Design (CED) at the University of Utah has developed a force reflective, teleoperated multiple degree of freedom hand and high mobility wrist. This hand/wrist teleoperation system is targeted to perform dexterous manipulation and assembly tasks in an effort to approach the capabilities of a human. A first-stage prototype of this hand/wrist master/slave system, which is scheduled for laboratory demonstration in February of 1989, has nine actuated degrees of freedom in both the hand master and hand slave. This paper discusses elements of the design of this hand/wrist master and slave with particular emphasis on servo system …

Cargo Manifests And Custom Records From American China Trade Vessels Bound For The Port Of Philadelphia 1790-1840, Nancy Davis Feb 1989

Cargo Manifests And Custom Records From American China Trade Vessels Bound For The Port Of Philadelphia 1790-1840, Nancy Davis

Journal of East Asian Libraries

For most Americans, the China trade holds the mystique of the faraway, the exotic, and the unreal. It has been perceived as a trade benefitting a well-to-do clientele. Cyphered Chinese export porcelain, exquisite silks, and ebony and ivory inlaid furniture were the objects associated with such commerce. Only very recently has there been some consideration of Chinese objects for the middle-class consumer. The main purpose of my study is to further this investigation and to extend what we know about Chinese objects available in the early 19th-century open market.

As a part of the American Historical Association's annual meeting in Cincinnati, the Swiss-American Historical Society held a special session on December 28, 1988. A good audience braved the snowy weather to meet in the Archives and Rare Books room of the Blegen Library at the University of Cincinnati to listen to three interesting presentations.

The Caleb Cushing Papers And Other China Trade Materials At The Library Of Congress, Jacques M. Downs

Journal of East Asian Libraries

The following four articles form a symposium locating and describing collections of Old China Trade documents in the Mid-Atlantic region. The three papers and the discussion of them were presented at the seventeenth annual meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Association for Asian Studies held October 21-23, 1988 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The panel, entitled "The Celestial Empire and the Early American Republic, 1784-1844: Old China Trade Documents in the Mid-Atlantic States Region," was chaired by Frank J. Shulman, who has organized eleven similar panels previously. Many of the papers of these earlier panels have already appeared here …

The Wisconsin Swiss: A Portrait, Ernest Menolfi, Leo Schelbert Feb 1989

The Wisconsin Swiss: A Portrait, Ernest Menolfi, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Few regions of the United States of North America have attracted as many Swiss as did the State of Wisconsin. It registered their steady increase among its foreign-born until 1920, and its southern region became well known for its Swiss American presence. Yet the Swiss remained throughout a rather small group among Wisconsin's people. The 1850 U. S. census, for example, counted a total of 304,756 inhabitants; of these 54,312 were born in Wisconsin, 139,166 in other parts of the Union, and 110,471 were foreign-born; among these 1,244 Swiss were counted (the nativity of 807 people remained 1 unknown).
