Ii. The Lloyd's And Switzerland, Georgia Lloyd
Ii. The Lloyd's And Switzerland, Georgia Lloyd
Swiss American Historical Society Review
My mother had many reasons to be drawn to Switzerland. Her father-in-law, Henry D. Lloyd, had spent time there. Geneva was the international headquarters of the League of Nations, and also of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom of which, along with Jane Addams, she had been a founder. A member of the Board, she wanted to attend the 1926 Congress of the W.I.L.P.F. being held in Dublin. She believed spending time in other countries was part of a good education.

For many Americans, scholar and lay alike, western Europe consists of the Big Three, England, Germany, and France. Monographs in English about the history and culture of Europe typjcally pertain only to them. On occasion another region or nation is included, but not unless "important" events took place there. Italy, for instance, only "existed" during the Renaissance, the Risorgimento, and again under Mussolini. Smaller countries like Switzerland, Portugal, or Denmark often do not get mentioned at all even when part of "world historical" phenomena. George Huppert exemplifies this approach in his newest book, After the Black Death: A Social History …

A Proposal For Reallocation Of Federal Grazing-Revisited, B. Delworth Gardner
A Proposal For Reallocation Of Federal Grazing-Revisited, B. Delworth Gardner
Faculty Publications
Over a quarter of a century ago, I analyzed the allocation procedures utilized by the federal agencies which administer livestock grazing on the public lands (Gardner 1962). Two factors contributing to grazing misallocation and reduced range productivity were identified: (1) the "eligibility" requirements that qualify permittees for grazing privileges prevented the utilization of forage by ranchers who would value it most, and (2) use-tenure insecurity resulting from cuts in permitted grazing impeded private investment in range improvements on the public ranges. In a second paper, I proposed that the grazing privilege system be reformed such that efficient allocation of forage …

Edith Irvine: Her Life And Photography, Wilma Marie Plunkett
Theses and Dissertations
ln mid-1988, Brigham Young University received a high-quality collection of photographic glass plates made by Edith Irvine at the tum of the century. The plates, her camera and other photographic equipment, and miscellaneous publications were donated to BYU by her nephew, Jim Irvine.
When the plates arrived and the Archives Photolab had them proofed, we realized thal not only were the San Francisco earthquake/ fire and other areas of California history recorded, but we had, in fact, the work of an outstanding photographer. As we compared the proofs with the work of other photographers who handled similar subjects, we called …

Development, Simulation, And Validation Of A Highly Nonlinear Hydraulic Servosystem Model, Tim W. Mclain, E K. Iversen, C C. Davis, S C. Jacobsen
Faculty Publications
A highly accurate and predictive dynamic model of an electrohydraulic actuation system has been developed and verified. The accuracy of the model can be attributed to the inclusion of nonlinear representations of many system elements including hysteresis and saturation effects, orifice areas, piston damping, and flow forces. This level of accuracy makes the model a potentially valuable tool in the analysis and design of electrohydraulic actuation systems.

Automatic Meshing Of Free-Form Deformation Solids, Ssuta S. Hsu
Automatic Meshing Of Free-Form Deformation Solids, Ssuta S. Hsu
Theses and Dissertations
Development of computer models and subsequent finite element analysis, are important aspects of modern engineering design. In this process, the geometry creation and finite element analysis software are well developed; however, the process of discretizing a geometry into a proper finite element model is time consuming and tedious. The work presented here uses the free-form deformation method to create smooth solid models, and invokes a solid subdivision and transition method to generate the hexahedron finite elements. The combination of these two techniques provides an automatic mesh generator that is easy to use, creates acceptable hexahedron elements for finite element analysis, …
