Discovery Of An Allosteric Site On Furin, Contributing To Potent Inhibition: A Promising Therapeutic For The Anemia Of Chronic Inflammation, Andrew Jacob Gross
Discovery Of An Allosteric Site On Furin, Contributing To Potent Inhibition: A Promising Therapeutic For The Anemia Of Chronic Inflammation, Andrew Jacob Gross
Theses and Dissertations
Release Date: October 2017
Anemia of chronic inflammation (ACI) is a condition that develops in a setting of chronic immune activation. ACI is characterized and triggered by inflammatory cytokines and the disruption of iron homeostasis. Hepcidin, a small peptide hormone, is the master regulator of iron homeostasis, and rapidly responds to iron supply and demand. Under conditions of chronic inflammation, hepcidin is elevated, and alters the way that iron is absorbed and disrupted throughout the body, resulting in disrupted iron homeostasis through inhibition of the iron exporter protein ferroportin. Anemia arises when insufficient erythropoietic activity combined with inadequate iron supply …
The Impact Of Parentification On Depression Moderated By Self-Care: A Multiple Group Analysis By Gender For South Korea And The U.S., Sunnie Giles
Theses and Dissertations
Parentification, the process of role reversal between parent and child, has long-term deleterious consequences. Using 500 men and 501 women, ranging from 18 years to 55 years old, residing in Korea and the U.S., this study examined the relationship of parentification experienced during childhood and depression in adulthood. The moderating impact of gender and self-care was examined in both the Korean and U.S. samples. Multiple-group analysis showed that the relationship between parentification and depression was statistically significant in all groups (U.S., Korean, male, and female), and self-care was negatively linked to depression. However, self-care did not moderate the relationship between …
"Making Ourselves Over In The Image Of The Imagery": Overcoming Alienation Through Poetic Expressions Of Experience, Jacqueline Aquino Teusch
"Making Ourselves Over In The Image Of The Imagery": Overcoming Alienation Through Poetic Expressions Of Experience, Jacqueline Aquino Teusch
Theses and Dissertations
My focus for this essay is on understanding the rhetorical process that occurs when people come together despite their differences—that is what rhetoric is all about. Kenneth Burke argues that this process, for alienated people especially, happens poetically, more than semantically because there are too many differences to overcome semantically between alienated people and the dominant community. This essay is about how the rhetorical process of identification as described by Burke helps us to explain how we cross barriers that divide people who are different to create moments of mutual understanding—identification. In this essay, I look at the experience of …

Man Shall Not Live By Bread, At All: A Netnography Of The Key Characteristics And Purposes Of An Online Gluten-Free Community, Emily Anne Bean
Theses and Dissertations
This study is a netnography of an online gluten-free community through the scope of the Facebook group "Gluten Free." The objective of this qualitative inquiry is to investigate the key characteristics of this online gluten-free community and gain a deeper understanding of member purposes for participation. Employing the method of netnography allows for an unobtrusive exploration of the community by discreetly utilizing anthropological techniques in an online setting. Despite growing awareness, no academic research has yet been conducted on the social aspects of the online gluten-free community. The thematic findings that emerged from this study were two-fold. First, this investigation …
A Maoli-Based Art Education: Ku'u Mau Kuamo'o 'Ōlelo, Raquel Malia Andrus
A Maoli-Based Art Education: Ku'u Mau Kuamo'o 'Ōlelo, Raquel Malia Andrus
Theses and Dissertations
Leaders in K-12 education in Hawai'i are increasingly advocating for and utilizing the culture and knowledge of the kānaka Maoli, the native people of these islands, as a context for learning in a variety of curricular disciplines and approaches (Benham & Heck, 1998; Kani'iaupuni, Ledward & Jensen, 2010; Kana'iaupuni & Malone, 2006; Kahakalau, 2004; Meyer, 2004). To expand upon this trend, this thesis uses a combination of autoethnographic and critical indigenous methodologies to present a personal narrative that looks specifically at approaching art education from a Maoli perspective. Through extensive participant/observer reflections, two place-based and culture-based art education experiences are …
The Relationship Between Partner Perceptions Of Marital Power And Sexual Satisfaction As Mediated By Observed Hostile Interaction, Amanda Claire Christenson
The Relationship Between Partner Perceptions Of Marital Power And Sexual Satisfaction As Mediated By Observed Hostile Interaction, Amanda Claire Christenson
Theses and Dissertations
Using a sample of 322 married couples (644 spouses) from The Flourishing Families project, this study examined the relationship between marital power and sexual satisfaction as mediated by observed hostile interaction. More specifically, an actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) was used in which husband and wife perceptions of their partner's power were hypothesized to be related to husband and wife self-report of sexual satisfaction, with husband and wife observed hostile interaction as possible mediating variables. Results showed that husband and wife perceptions of power were positively related to their respective husband and wife sexual satisfaction and positively related to their respective …
Romantic Relational Aggression In Parents And Adolescent Child Outcomes, Jennifer Nicole Hawkley
Romantic Relational Aggression In Parents And Adolescent Child Outcomes, Jennifer Nicole Hawkley
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine marital romantic relational aggression in parents and its impact on adolescent relational aggression, adolescent romantic relational aggression, internalizing, and school engagement with self-regulation as a potential mediator. Gender differences were also examined. Adolescents were from 328 two-parent families in a large north-western city in the United States and were between 12 and 17 years of age (M=14.24, SD=1.00, 51% female) at time 4. All independent variables except adolescent self-regulation were measured at wave 4, and all adolescent variables were measured at wave 5. Results indicate that higher levels of romantic relational aggression …

Genetics And History Surrounding Chachapoyas, Peru, Joel E. Myres
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Anthropologists studying human diversity and distribution have long recognized that humans are the recipients of two major informational systems; one cultural and the other biological. Both these components of human diversity are inherited by organisms, be they individuals or populations, across spatial and temporal realms, and retain the ability to influence the behavior or continuance of the organism in terms of fitness. Similarly, the biological record can reflect cultural processes or transitions, such as migrations or disease, much as ethnographic studies can identify elements of cultural adoption, such as ideas or practices. In as much as these elements of culture …

Louise Gottsched: Digital Library Research From 1771 German- Language Women’S Texts., Samuel C. Lindsey, Michelle Scott, Dr. Robert Mcfarland
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Scholars have failed to systematically observe and record old German facsimiles of German women’s literature for a variety of reasons. First, many of the records have remained unpublished. Second, it is expensive to get hold of these texts due to their rare and fragile condition. Third, it is difficult to read the Old German type and handwriting. Johann Christoph Gottsched was one of the most important dramatic theorists of Enlightenment-era Germany. One of his greatest students and influences was his very gifted and intelligent wife, Louise Adelgunde Victorie Kulmus. While some of her dramatic and theoretical works have been published, …
Perspectives On The Interdisciplinary Cultural Study Of Comics And Comic Books: An Apology For Superheroes, Eric J. Ehlers, Dr. Dale Pratt
Perspectives On The Interdisciplinary Cultural Study Of Comics And Comic Books: An Apology For Superheroes, Eric J. Ehlers, Dr. Dale Pratt
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Comic books are burdened with a poor public image, both within and without academic circles. Altering this perception has seemed a Herculean task, and taking on this chore has demonstrated quite a few errors in my thinking on the subject.
Tobacco Awareness Among Physicians In The Former Soviet Block, L. Daniel Holsinger, Dr. Gordon Lindsay
Tobacco Awareness Among Physicians In The Former Soviet Block, L. Daniel Holsinger, Dr. Gordon Lindsay
Journal of Undergraduate Research
During the summer of 2001, I traveled for the third time to Ukraine. Unlike my previous longstay residencies in Ukraine (totaling four years), which had focused on language and cultural studies, as well as general humanitarian and missionary service, my third stay was motivated by an explicit agenda to fight big tobacco interests in that country. With strong faculty support, and convinced that the frontal marketing assault to expand tobacco markets in Ukraine was harmful to its citizens, I designed and began to carry out a research effort focused primarily on a tobacco consumption crisis in the former Soviet Union. …
Measuring A Highly Religious Population: Development Of An Empirical Test For Brigham Young University Students, Marin Turley, Dr. Steven R. Thomsen
Measuring A Highly Religious Population: Development Of An Empirical Test For Brigham Young University Students, Marin Turley, Dr. Steven R. Thomsen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This research charts the development of a reliable scale that can discriminate differences in religiosity in a highly religious population. Approximately 99% of the more than 30,000 students at Brigham Young University are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, presenting a highly religious and highly homogenous population (www.byu.edu). In such a population, a researcher needs a sensitive survey scale to generate a quantifiable measure of religiosity that will discriminate between members. This project applied considerations for defining and measuring religiosity empirically, using the BYU population as a case study. The goal and final product of this …

I Get Mad Just Thinking About It: Comparing Students’ Emotions And Beliefs Evoked By Anger In Mozambique And At Brigham Young University’S, Ryan Curtis, Dr. Matthew Spackman
Journal of Undergraduate Research
An emotion consists of many things. Research in emotion has been a constant debate between those who believe that emotions are more biologically based, and those who believe emotions are more culturally based. Cross-cultural studies of emotion have been used from the beginning of this debate to assess the effect of culture on emotions. The purpose of this study was to help determine the role of culture in emotions. Specifically, it studies 1) the effect of culture on the appraisal of anger, and 2) the effect of culture on the experience of secondary emotions that come from remembering an anger …

The Language Flagship Model And The Humanities, Sam Eisen
The Language Flagship Model And The Humanities, Sam Eisen
Russian Language Journal
The Language Flagship program provides a model that strengthens and deepens cultural engagement within the humanities and creates bridges to collaboration across disciplines. Flagship addresses needs for national security and global competitiveness and integrates professional and life experience into the humanities and other fields for the students who engage in this course of study. The cross-disciplinary nature of the Flagship program and the level of personal, cultural and professional engagement required to complete the program are successfully changing the undergraduate study experience in ways that address significant issues in the ongoing discussion of a crisis in the humanities. The Language …

The University Of Rhode Island International Engineering Program: A Model For The Merger Of Technology And The Humanities, John M. Grandin, Sigrid Berka
Russian Language Journal
Contrary to a long-established and seemingly irrefutable tradition, American parents, educators, private and public sector leaders, and students are beginning to doubt the value of a university education. Charges have been leveled, for example, that students today are spending substantially less time on academics than their predecessors and are making little progress during their undergraduate years in their ability to read, write, speak, or think analytically and critically (see, for example, Arum and Roksa 2011, Vedder and Denhart 2011). Others have argued that college is burdening young people with lifelong debt to the degree that it is stifling their creativity …
Politeness And Sociocultural Values In American And Russian Cultures Emerging From The Speech Act Of Complaint; Pragmatic Competence Of L2 Learners Of Russian, Beata Gallaher
Russian Language Journal
In the last two decades, there has been an increasing number of empirical studies on complaints that explore the effects of sociocultural values and linguistic politeness on the language performance of nativeand non-native speakers of English (Kasper 1981; Piotrowska 1987; Olshtain and Weinbach 1987, 1993; Trosborg 1995; Arent 1996; Murphy and Neu 1996; Kraft and Geluykens 2002, 2007; Tanck 2002; Umar 2006; Prykarpatska 2008). However, the empirical data on complaints by Russian native and non-native speakers remains scarce (Olshtain and Weinbach 1993; Gershenson 2003; Kozlova 2004; Perelmutter 2010). The research on complaints is particularly important for studying the impact of …
'Det Ny Fra Thy': Historical Innovation In A Peripheral Place, Poul Houe
'Det Ny Fra Thy': Historical Innovation In A Peripheral Place, Poul Houe
The Bridge
When we say in English that a certain innovation "takes place" or in Danish: finder sted, which means literally, "finds place" -both linguistic idioms, "takes" or "finds" place, suggest that the role of place is not accidental. This is obviously pivotal in geography, but also in anthropology, sociology, philosophy, and a host of cultural studies, sometimes in the form of "mental geography." Recent Danish book titles suggest as much: Dan Ringgaard's Stedssans (Sense of Place), Anne-Marie Mai's Hvor litteraturen finder sted (Where literature Takes Place) in 3 volumes, and Ringgaard & Mai's anthology Sted (Place).

Using Contemporary Art To Guide Curriculum Design:A Contemporary Jewelry Workshop, Kathryn C. Smurthwaite
Theses and Dissertations
There is currently need for reform in art programs of all kinds, in regards to use of and focus on contemporary art and current practices. Teaching about art of our time and place enables students to understand and make connections to their world, and facilitates art making that is creative and relevant. This thesis describes theory and rationale for basing curriculum on contemporary art practices and presents a jewelry workshop, for all skill levels, that teaches contemporary art themes and practices. There are two units. The first teaches metal texturing, shaping and simple soldering skills while, focusing on art that …
An Issue Of Equity: Assessing The Cultural Knowledge Of Pre-Service Teachers In Teach For America, Eric Ruiz Bybee
An Issue Of Equity: Assessing The Cultural Knowledge Of Pre-Service Teachers In Teach For America, Eric Ruiz Bybee
Faculty Publications
This literature review examines the research on the development of “cultural knowledge” for preservice teachers in Teach for America program. “Cultural knowledge” refers to a teacher’s awareness of the sociopolitical contexts of education and the development of critical consciousness about issues of educational equity. After a brief introduction to the organizational structure of TFA, I will discuss some of the recent research on the organization-- much of which has focused on achievement, teacher preparation, and the public policy implications of the program. Then, I will examine themes in the research on the cultural knowledge of preservice teachers’ in traditional preparation …

The Weir Family, 1820–1920: Expanding The Traditions Of American Art, Marian Wardle, Herman Du Toit
BYU Studies
Marian Wardle, curator of American art at the Brigham Young University Museum of Art and part-time faculty member at BYU in art history, has assembled a remarkable group of writers from across the country for an anthology that focuses on the lives and artistic production of three of America's most notable artists: Robert Walter Weir (1803-1889) and his sons John Ferguson Weir (1841-1926) and Julian Alden Weir (1852-1919). The BYU Museum of Art became the beneficiary of a collection of the Weirs' artworks when one of Julian Weir's daughters, Dorothy, passed away in 1947, leaving much of her family's extensive …

"You've Got To Be Carefully Taught": Reflections On War, Imperialism And Patriotism In America's South Pacific, Jayna D. Butler
Theses and Dissertations
Underneath the romance, comedy and exoticism, South Pacific is a story that questioned core American values, exploring issues of race and power at a time when these topics were intensely relevant-the original opened just four years post WWII, on the heels of Roosevelt's aggressive expansionist response to domestic instabilities. Much has been written about the depiction of war and racial prejudice in South Pacific. However, examining such topics in the context of their cultural and political moment (both in 1949 and 2008) and through the lens of Terry Eagleton's unique take on morality, is not only a fascinating study, but …
The Sounds Of Syria: Musical Instruments From The Azem Palace, Eric Kyle Lewis, Dr. Cynthia Finlayson
The Sounds Of Syria: Musical Instruments From The Azem Palace, Eric Kyle Lewis, Dr. Cynthia Finlayson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
During the days of the Ottoman Empire, the Azem Palace was the home of the local governor of Damascus. After World War I and Syrian independence, this residence was converted into Syria’s Museum of Popular Arts and Tradition. Now it contains clothing, furniture, and even musical instruments from Syria.1 However, funding deficits have prevented the staff at the Azem Palace to adequately document, display, and preserve museum items. Thus, Cynthia Finlayson of Brigham Young University’s Art History Department has begun a long-term project to improve the quality of the museum.

Cultural Traditions And Public Policy: The National Film Board Of Canada’S Aboriginal Filmmaking Program, Meredith A. Bak, Dr. Dean Duncan
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My project consisted of an in depth analysis of the National Film Board of Canada’s Aboriginal Filmmaking Program, to lead to the eventual publication of a feature-length article presenting the program as a model by which media literacy can be taught by exploring the work of a specific region in order to increase global communication. Initially, I had planned on traveling to Canada to conduct interviews with a variety of artists and policymakers, however, upon completion of preliminary research and based on the information offered by my Canadian contacts and my faculty mentor, I restructured my methodology to include primarily …
