A Study Of Forces And Events Leading To The Repeal Of Prohibition And The Adoption Of A Liquor Control System, George Harmon Skyles Jan 1962

A Study Of Forces And Events Leading To The Repeal Of Prohibition And The Adoption Of A Liquor Control System, George Harmon Skyles

Theses and Dissertations

During the Nineteenth Century, a reform agitation known as the prohibition movement began to gather momentum in the United States. Led chiefly by the Women's Christian Temperance Union and pushed also by the Prohibition Party, this movement grew only slowly until a general spirit of reform began to sweep the country at the end of the century. With the W.C.T.U. and the American Anti-Saloon League leading the fight during the Progressive Era, the tide of public opinion finally took form in the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, an amendment which forbade "the manufacture, sale or transportation …

The Faith Of Their Fathers: A Study Of The Religious Influence In Child-Rearing, Phillip R. Kunz Jan 1962

The Faith Of Their Fathers: A Study Of The Religious Influence In Child-Rearing, Phillip R. Kunz

Theses and Dissertations

Although there have been several significant studies during recent years concerning methods of child-rearing, little has been done to ascertain what influence an ideology may have on child-rearing patterns, or whether there are unique patterns of child-rearing within a specific subculture.

Specifically, the purpose of this research is to answer the following questions: (1) What influence, if any, does the L.D.S. religious ideology have on child-rearing behavior, and (2) what are some of the patterns of child-rearing in the L.D.S. subculture.

An Historical Study Of The Koyle Relief Mine, 1894-1962, James R. Christianson Jan 1962

An Historical Study Of The Koyle Relief Mine, 1894-1962, James R. Christianson

Theses and Dissertations

The Koyle Relief Mine, located near Spanish Fork in Central Utah, has had a profound effect upon the life and property of thousands of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Company officials claim that the number of stockholders, past and present, exceeds six thousand persons.

Despite the sixty-eight years of its totally unsuccessful operation, the mine continues to maintain a countless number of old believers and to attract a considerable array of new ones. Prompted by a type of religious fervor, these people continue to declare the mine divine and its founder, John H. Koyle, inspired. …

The Relationship Of Empathy And Seminary Teachers' Effectiveness, Chet W. Harris Jan 1962

The Relationship Of Empathy And Seminary Teachers' Effectiveness, Chet W. Harris

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted for the primary purpose of discovering the relationship of two personal variables to effective seminary teaching.

It was hypothesized that:
(1) There is no significant difference between seminary teachers whom the department considers as very effective (high-rated) and seminary teachers whose teaching effectiveness is questioned by the department (low-rated) in their ability to empathize with the self concept of their students.
(2) there is no significant difference between seminary teachers who are high-rated and seminary teachers who are low-rated in their ability to sociempathise (perceive student's social status among peers).

Poetry In The Free World, Carlton Culmsee Jan 1962

Poetry In The Free World, Carlton Culmsee

BYU Studies

Since the time of the Reformation there have been incredible advances in scientific understanding and technological development. This change signaled a change in Western values, from the subjective to the objective. After hundreds of years, this cultural shift is creating a modern sense of despair. The author calls upon poets to fight the "cult of objectivity" in order to help the world reach another age in which they delight in the subjective and the spiritual.

The Visual Image Of Joseph Smith, William B. Mccarl Jan 1962

The Visual Image Of Joseph Smith, William B. Mccarl

Theses and Dissertations

For most of the period since his death in 1844, at the hands of a maniacal mob in Carthage, Illinois, there has been doubt about which portrait of Joseph Smith, first president and founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, best represented his physical features. This work has attempted to accumulate as much information about his features as was available for the purpose of establishing the true image of the man. The discoveries made by this study are listed in the following discussion.

Joseph Smith And The Millenarian Time Table, Richard Lloyd Anderson Oct 1961

Joseph Smith And The Millenarian Time Table, Richard Lloyd Anderson

BYU Studies

Critics have used Joseph Smith's statements about the eminent return of the Messiah as evidence that he was a false prophet. Joseph's 1835 statement that "fifty-six years should wind up the scene" has fallen under considerable criticism. By examining the context of this statement, the author asserts that it was not a divinely revealed pronouncement but an opinion or an interpretation of a personal revelation the prophet received. Unlike other millenarian groups, the Latter-day Saints did not actively forecast the arrival of the Savior, nor did they passively wait for the glorious millennial day to arrive. Joseph Smith inspired the …

The Demands Of Aesthetics Upon Religious Art, Melvin Rader Oct 1961

The Demands Of Aesthetics Upon Religious Art, Melvin Rader

BYU Studies

Art has the ability to communicate sacredness that few other methods of expression can duplicate. The author asserts that without art, religion would be inarticulate and that it is natural that many of the world's greatest works of art are religious. However, religious themes don't always translate into good art, and good art isn't always religious. Art and religion should not be confused, but art, as the expression of deepest conviction, can add much to the religious experience.

James Joyce At 71, Rue Du Cardinal Lemoine, Douglas Kent Hall Oct 1961

James Joyce At 71, Rue Du Cardinal Lemoine, Douglas Kent Hall

BYU Studies

From June to September 1922, James Joyce lived in Valery Larbaud's flat at 71, rue du Cardinal Lemoine, Paris. Here he did some of the final work on Ulysses. Joyce's personal correspondence highlights the challenges of this period, including health problems, financial difficulties, and frustration with the work that would become a modern classic.

The Impact Of Applied Science Upon The Utopian Ideal, Arthur H. Frietzsche Oct 1961

The Impact Of Applied Science Upon The Utopian Ideal, Arthur H. Frietzsche

BYU Studies

The author examines the changing attitudes toward applied science by looking at three Utopian works: Sir Thomas More's Utopia (1516), Sir Francis Bacon's New Atlantis (1626), and Jonathan Swift's Voyage to Laputa (1727). While More focuses on improving man, Bacon focuses on improving things. Swift shows the problem inherent in Bacon's emphasis on applied science by creating a satire in which science in every instance is misapplied. The changing attitude toward applied science in these early works is still evident in Utopian works today.

A Thermodynamic Study Of Step-Wise Complex Formation In Several Aqueous Copper (Ii)-Amino Acid Systems, Vipin M. Kothari Sep 1961

A Thermodynamic Study Of Step-Wise Complex Formation In Several Aqueous Copper (Ii)-Amino Acid Systems, Vipin M. Kothari

Theses and Dissertations

pK_n values for step-wise dissociation of protons from the protonated ligands (glycine, α-amino isobutyric acid, sarcosine and theonine) were determined potentiometrically with a Beckman Model GS pH meter in aqueous solution at 10, 20, 30 and 40° C. Log K values for step-wise interaction of glycine, α-amino isobutyric acid, sarcosine and threonine with copper(II) ion were also determined potentiometrically with a pH meter at 10, 20, 30 and 40° C. The standard free energy of formation for the step-wise interaction of copper(II) with each of the above ligands was calculated from the values of log K. Enthalpy and entropy changes …

Thermodynamic equilibrium constants were obtained potentiometrically using a Beckman pH meter for metal-serine and metal-thioglycolloc acid complexes to study the thermodynamic properties of the complexes and the effect of dπ - dπ bonding on the equilibrium constants. The following calculations were made: 1. The stepwise dissociation of protons from serine at 10, 20, 30, and 40°C and the stepwise dissociation of protons from thioglycollic acid at 20, 30, and 40°C. 2. The thermodynamic formation constants for Zn(II), Cd(II), Hg(II), and Ag(I) with serine at 10, 20, 30, and 40°C and at two ionic strengths. 3. The thermodynamic formation constants for …

The Design Of A Six Specimen Tensile Fatigue Machine, Charles Mark Percival Aug 1961

The Design Of A Six Specimen Tensile Fatigue Machine, Charles Mark Percival

Theses and Dissertations

Although metal fatigue has been recognized for many years and during that time many persons have tried to find the explanation for it, there is still not a complete theory concerning this phenomenon. Metal fatigue is one of the major problems the modem designer must face. If the design techniques are to progress as other technological advances are made, it is evident that it will involve a better understanding of metal fatigue.

A Comparative Study Of The Axillary Sclerites In Coleoptera, Howard P. Shurtleff May 1961

A Comparative Study Of The Axillary Sclerites In Coleoptera, Howard P. Shurtleff

Theses and Dissertations

The axillary sclerites of 69 species representing 52 families of the order Coleoptera were examined and illustrations prepared of most or them. A description is given for the typical axillary sclerites and the deviations in form from this pattern are discussed for the major groups of beetles. The phylogenetic relationships between some families, and other groups, are pointed out based on the morphology of the axillary sclerites. Phyletic groups in Adephaga are characterized by the axillary sclerites, but in the Polyphaga variations are too numerous and inconsistant to be useful in determining phyletic trends.

Theodore Dreiser: Naturalist Or Theist?, Dustin Heuston Apr 1961

Theodore Dreiser: Naturalist Or Theist?, Dustin Heuston

BYU Studies

American author Theodore Dreiser is often considered a naturalist. However, Dreiser's later works reveal a more theistic philosophy. A close examination, especially of Dreiser's last two works, reveals that he was a theist who, for a time, explored naturalist thought.

Theory And Practice Of Church And State During The Brigham Young Era, J. Keith Melville Jan 1961

Theory And Practice Of Church And State During The Brigham Young Era, J. Keith Melville

BYU Studies

The early Latter-day Saints felt they were building the spiritual and political kingdom of God on Earth. The concept of the kingdom included political ideals as well as economic and social. Joseph Smith ran for US president on this premise. After his death, when the Nauvoo charter was repealed, a political vacuum was created, and Brigham Young was there to fill it. As the Saints went west, ecclesiastical and political leadership was one and the same. Brigham Young was Church president and the first governor of Utah, but in 1858 the US appointed a non-Mormon governor, and the Mormon-federal conflict …

Mormon Folk Song And The Fife Collection, Thomas E. Cheney Jan 1961

Mormon Folk Song And The Fife Collection, Thomas E. Cheney

BYU Studies

The author reviews Austin Fife's collection of Mormon folk songs according to the criteria of what makes a song a folk song. Although the collection is rather disorganized and over half of the collected songs are not true Mormon folk songs, Fife's work is still a valuable work. Austin Fife's collection of hymns, songs, and spoken word is at the Library of Congress; audio tapes were sold to Brigham Young University.

The Life And Contributions Of Samuel Harrison Smith, Dean Jarman Jan 1961

The Life And Contributions Of Samuel Harrison Smith, Dean Jarman

Theses and Dissertations

Samuel H. Smith lived at a period of time when American society was undergoing great change in its economic, religious, and social institutions. Increased transportation facilities provided new opportunities for the common man. There was increased mobility on the part of Americans and the West offered many new opportunities. A renewed interest in religion and the repudiation of existing Christian institutions were characteristic of that period of time.

A Textual Comparison Of The Isaiah Passages In The Book Of Mormon With The Same Passages In The St. Mark's Isaiah Scroll Of The Dead Sea Community, Wayne Ham Jan 1961

A Textual Comparison Of The Isaiah Passages In The Book Of Mormon With The Same Passages In The St. Mark's Isaiah Scroll Of The Dead Sea Community, Wayne Ham

Theses and Dissertations

The Book of Mormon contains twenty-one chapters of the Book of Isaiah: two through fourteen, twenty-nine, and forty-eight through fifty-four. The language is primarily that of the King James Version with some variations. The King James Version itself has been translated from the Massoretic Hebrew Text. It is a fair assumption that the variations in the Book of Mormon represent an older, more accurate text than the Massoretic Text.

Textual critics are anxious to find ancient texts and versions of the scriptures in the hope that some of these texts may contain readings closer to the original than does the …

A Study Of Drop-Outs From Twelve Seminaries In Utah Conducted During 1960-61, Roy Fearnley Hatch

Theses and Dissertations

Public educators are using drop-out studies as a means of improving the curriculum and increasing the holding power of the schools. The public educators are attempting to prepare man for life and the religious educators are attempting to prepare man for eternity. There have been many studies concerning the public school drop-outs, but this is the first one concerning seminary drop-outs.

The purpose of this study has been to determine why some students drop-out of seminary before graduation. After learning the reasons for the students dropping out, it is important that changes be made to increase the enrollment and holding …

A Comparison Of The Root Systems Of Bitterbrush And Cliffrose, Morris G. Cline Sep 1960

A Comparison Of The Root Systems Of Bitterbrush And Cliffrose, Morris G. Cline

Theses and Dissertations

A root study was undertaken to learn about bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata (Pursh) DC) and cliffrose (Cowania stansburiana torr.) to gain some clues, perhaps, as to the causes of their present distribution. In a period extending from July 1959 to July 1960, twenty-four plants were excavated on six different sites in the Wasatch foothill belt in Utah County, Utah. Root and some soil characteristics were analyzed, described and compared.
