The Theory Of Insular Biogeography And The Distribution Of Boreal Birds And Mammals, James H. Brown Mar 1978

The Theory Of Insular Biogeography And The Distribution Of Boreal Birds And Mammals, James H. Brown

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

The present paper compares the distribution of boreal birds and mammals among the isolated mountain ranges of the Great Basin and relates those patterns to the developing theory of insular biogeography. The results indicate that the distribution of permanent resident bird species represents an approximate equilibrium between contemporary rates of colonization and extinction. A shallow slope of the species-area curve (Z = 0.165), no significant reduction in numbers of species as a function of insular isolation (distance to nearest continent), and a strong dependence of species diversity on habitat diversity all suggest that immigration rates of boreal birds are sufficiently …

Biogeography Of Intermountain Fishes, Gerald R. Smith Mar 1978

Biogeography Of Intermountain Fishes, Gerald R. Smith

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Eighty-three species of fishes belonging to 26 genera live in the area bounded by the Sierra Nevada, Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountains, and Snake River Plain. The waters inhabited by these fishes are part of the Great Basin, Colorado River, Snake River, upper Pit River and upper Klamath River drainages. The adaptations and distribution patterns of these fishes have been shaped by extensional faulting and volcanic activity in the Great Basin, uplift of the surrounding ranges and plateaus, and cyclic fluctuations of the Pleistocene pluvials and interpluvials. Fossil evidence indicates that in the Pliocene many of the lineages had established distributions …

Applying Biogeographic Principles To Resource Management: A Case Study Evaluating Holdridge's Life Zone Model, James A. Macmahon, Thomas F. Wieboldt Mar 1978

Applying Biogeographic Principles To Resource Management: A Case Study Evaluating Holdridge's Life Zone Model, James A. Macmahon, Thomas F. Wieboldt

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Conservation schemes require some portioning of the world into a discrete number of subunits which might benefit from similar management practices. The Holdridge Life Zone scheme, proposed for such purposes previously, is applied to Utah as an initial test of its usefulness. A hypothetical life zone map was developed entirely on the basis of weather station data and data derived from these values. This predictive map compared favorably to data on patterns of vegetation, mammal, reptile, and amphibian distribution in Utah.

Distribution And Phylogeny Of Eriogonoideae (Polygonaceae), James L. Reveal Mar 1978

Distribution And Phylogeny Of Eriogonoideae (Polygonaceae), James L. Reveal

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Eriogonoideae is a subfamily of the knotweed family, Polygonaceae, endemic to the New World, and is composed of 14 genera and perhaps 320 species. It differs primarily from the other members of Polygonaceae in lacking well-defined sheathing stipules or ochrea. The species of Eriogonoideae vary from tiny, fragile annuals to herbaceous perennials, low subshrubs or shrubs to large and often arborescent shrubs. The seemingly most primitive extant genus of the subfamily is Eriogonum (247 species), which is widespread in central North America. A series of genera are closely related to Eriogonum, and probably have evolved directly from Eriogonum. These …

Explosive Evolution Of Perennial Atriplex In Western America, Howard C. Stutz Mar 1978

Explosive Evolution Of Perennial Atriplex In Western America, Howard C. Stutz

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

New habitats opened up in western North America since the recession of Lake Bonneville and Lake Lahontan have admitted a host of new species of Atriplex. Every known evolutionary force is operating and at accelerated paces. Autoploidy appears to be more common than in any other reported group of plants. Natural hybridization between closely related species has provided a wealth of fertile segregants from which new adaptive types have been and are being selected. Hybrids between more distantly related species are sterile and some appear to have given rise to fertile alloploid derivatives.
All evidence points to a center of …

Sailing “The Old Ship Zion”: The Life Of George D. Watt, Ronald G. Watt Jan 1978

Sailing “The Old Ship Zion”: The Life Of George D. Watt, Ronald G. Watt

BYU Studies

George D. Watt was a prominent figure in nineteenth-century Utah, but because he apostatized from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he is now an obscure individual in Mormon history. Watt was baptized in England in 1837, and five years later, he and his wife arrived in Nauvoo. After returning to England to serve a mission, he arrived in Utah in 1851. His knowledge of shorthand was valuable for recording speeches from Church leaders, which were published in the Deseret News and Journal of Discourses, and was also useful for helping develop the Deseret Alphabet. He later …

An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor Jan 1978

An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor

Theses and Dissertations

The primary function of this thesis was to determine, through the analysis of three randomly selected speeches, the speaking style of Heber C. Kimball. The selected speeches were presented in three different utah locations, and they covered a span of nine years (1856-65). All three speeches were presented to a Mormon audience and were religious in nature.

Seven elements of style have been used for the analysis of the three speeches. They are: accuracy, clarity, propriety, economy, force, striking quality, and liveliness. It was determined that President Kimball's speaking style was weak in the areas of accuracy and clarity. In …

Stratigraphy Of The Lower Tertiary And Upper Cretaceous (?) Continental Strata In The Canyon Range, Juab County, Utah, James M. Stolle Jan 1978

Stratigraphy Of The Lower Tertiary And Upper Cretaceous (?) Continental Strata In The Canyon Range, Juab County, Utah, James M. Stolle

Theses and Dissertations

The Canyon Range Formation (informal new name), formerly mapped as the Indianola Group within the Canyon Range, is divisible into two distinct, mappable units, A and B. Unit A is nearly all conglomerate strata, and conglomerate texture and sedimentary structures suggest an alluvial fan depositional environment. Precambrian and basal Cambrian quartzite clasts represent the erosional debris from the allochthonous Canyon Range thrust. Unit B is composed of interbedded fluvial sandstone and conglomerates with lacustrine limestones, commonly micritic and/or oncolitic. Conglomerate clasts indicate a Paleozoic carbonate provenance. Unit A, previously mapped as the Indianola, underlies Unit B and correlates with the …

Do Your Homework!, Thorvald Hansen

The Bridge

I once heard a young American ask a Danish visitor whether or not he was acquainted with the inquirer's uncle in Denmark. It quickly developed that the only thing which the young man knew about his uncle was his family name. Incredible as it may seem, such things happen and though to a lesser degree, they happen frequently when a search is made for overseas ancestors. Denmark is a relatively small country and the unspoken assumption is often made that everyone there knows everyone else and, therefore, one need only know the name and the fact that an ancestor came …

Parental Control Of Children's Television: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Control And Family Home Evening, Marion Wixom Mccardell Jan 1978

Parental Control Of Children's Television: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Control And Family Home Evening, Marion Wixom Mccardell

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to examine the relationship between a secular behavior—television control—and a religious one—Family Home Evening. The findings show that there is a relationship, with those having favorable attitudes toward Family Home Evening and those who hold casual FHE's being most inclined to exercise positive control over their children's television viewing.

Mormon Poor Relief: A Social Welfare Interlude, Betty L. Barton Jan 1978

Mormon Poor Relief: A Social Welfare Interlude, Betty L. Barton

BYU Studies

There has been considerable scholarship about the law of consecration in the early days of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and about the more recent Church welfare plan, but there has been relatively little written about Mormon welfare in the period roughly between 1850 and 1930. Many of the early pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley faced starvation, so President Brigham Young created public works projects in order to give people jobs, acting under the belief that it is better to help people help themselves than to simply give them handouts. Unlike much of American society of …

The Mormon Heritage Of Vardis Fisher, Leonard J. Arrington, Jon Haupt Jan 1978

The Mormon Heritage Of Vardis Fisher, Leonard J. Arrington, Jon Haupt

BYU Studies

Twentieth-century novelist Vardis Fisher is often regarded as a Mormon apostate and critic, most notably for his 1939 book Children of God. However, Fisher was never excommunicated from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and despite his skeptical and sometimes critical portrayals of Mormonism, religion played an important role in his lifestyle and writings. Having studied the Bible as a youth, he had a preoccupation with the moral earnestness of the Judeo-Christian tradition. He also took a psychological approach to Mormonism in many of his novels, particularly regarding issues of religion and sexuality. Fisher had a Mormon …

A New Fossil Sponge From The Ordovician Garden City Limestone Of Southeastern Idaho, J. Keith Rigby, James K. Gilland Dec 1977

A New Fossil Sponge From The Ordovician Garden City Limestone Of Southeastern Idaho, J. Keith Rigby, James K. Gilland

Great Basin Naturalist

The new choristid demosponge, Loganiella johnsoni, is described from the upper part of the Lower Ordovician Garden City Formation of southeastern Idaho. The new sponge is a relatively thin walled, low, subcylindrical form. The skeletal net is composed of tracts of curved rodlike spicules, but details have been lost on all specimens because of extensive silicification. Impressions, however, suggest a close relationship to the choristid Dystactospongia Miller, 1889.

New Synonymy And New Species Of American Bark Beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), Part Vi, Stephen L. Wood

Great Basin Naturalist

New synonymy of American Scolytidae is proposed as follows: Corthylus Erichson ( = Pseudocorthylus Ferrari), Hylesinus Fabricius ( = Leperisinus Reitter), Monarthrum Kirsch ( = Anchonocerus Eichhoff), Corthylus spinifer Schwarz ( = Metacorthylus affinis Fonseca, Corthylus affinis Fonseca), Cryphalus ruficollis Hopkins ( = Cryphalus amabilis Chamberlin, Cryphalus coloradensis Wood), Gnathotrichus retusus (LeConte) ( = Gnathotrichus alni Blackman), Gnathotrichus sulcatus (LeConte) ( = Gnathotrichus aciculatus Blackman), Hypothenemus eruditus Westwood ( = Hypothenemus germari Eichhoff, Stephanoderes myrmidon Eichhoff, Stephanoderes intersetosus Eggers), Hypothenemus seriatus Eichhoff ( = Stephanoderes nitidulus Hopkins, Stephanoderes subopacicollis Hopkins), Hypothenemus obscurus (Fabricius) ( = Stephanoderes asperulus Eichhoff, Stephanoderes cassiae …

Photosynthetic Fractionation Of Oxygen Isotopes, A Study With Elodea Canadensis, Glen E. Martin Dec 1977

Photosynthetic Fractionation Of Oxygen Isotopes, A Study With Elodea Canadensis, Glen E. Martin

Theses and Dissertations

Bubbles of oxygen from Elodea canadensis were collected and found 5 per mil enriched in 0-18. This confirms the results of both Dole and Vinogradov, who found 0-18 enrichment of photosynthetic oxygen relative to its source, i.e. water. Photosynthesis and respiration appear to have produced the Dole effect, i.e. the 22 per mil 0-18 enrichment of atmospheric oxygen relative to ocean water, its probable source. These results are contrary to findings for both UV photolysis and electrolysis of water both evolving oxygen found depleted in 0-18.

Algal Response To A Thermal Effluent : Study Of A Power Station On The Provo River, Utah, Usa, Lorin E. Squires Dec 1977

Algal Response To A Thermal Effluent : Study Of A Power Station On The Provo River, Utah, Usa, Lorin E. Squires

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of a thermal effluent on the attached algae of the Provo River, Utah, USA, was studied from 1975 to 1977. Data for macroscopic and microscopic algae were collected and analyzed. Diatoms, Cladophora glomerata, and Hydrurus foetidus dominated the flora. The thermal effluent significantly affected the algal flora in a section of river 100 to 135 meters long immediately below the discharge point. Cladophora growth was increased and Hydrurus was absent in this area. In addition, diatom production was often higher and diversity lower than in the rest of the river. Community structure was unique from all other adjacent …

Biomass Of Fifty Conifer Forests And Nutrient Exports Associated With Their Harvest, T. Weaver, F. Forcella Sep 1977

Biomass Of Fifty Conifer Forests And Nutrient Exports Associated With Their Harvest, T. Weaver, F. Forcella

Great Basin Naturalist

Biomasses of climax Rocky Mountain forests studied ranged from less than 50 to more than 300 tons/ha. Total biomass was approximately 1.5 times the biomass of normally merchantable boles. When compared with conventional bole harvest, the nutrient exports associated with harvest of all aboveground parts in these stands would apparently be at least three times higher for nitrogen, six times higher for phosphorus, four times higher for potassium, and three times higher for calcium.
