A Proposal For Reallocation Of Federal Grazing-Revisited, B. Delworth Gardner Jun 1989

A Proposal For Reallocation Of Federal Grazing-Revisited, B. Delworth Gardner

Faculty Publications

Over a quarter of a century ago, I analyzed the allocation procedures utilized by the federal agencies which administer livestock grazing on the public lands (Gardner 1962). Two factors contributing to grazing misallocation and reduced range productivity were identified: (1) the "eligibility" requirements that qualify permittees for grazing privileges prevented the utilization of forage by ranchers who would value it most, and (2) use-tenure insecurity resulting from cuts in permitted grazing impeded private investment in range improvements on the public ranges. In a second paper, I proposed that the grazing privilege system be reformed such that efficient allocation of forage …

Review Of Selenium In Soils, Plants, And Animals In Nevada, Stephen C. Poole, Verle R. Bohman, James A. Young Apr 1989

Review Of Selenium In Soils, Plants, And Animals In Nevada, Stephen C. Poole, Verle R. Bohman, James A. Young

Great Basin Naturalist

Selenium is critical in livestock nutrition; forage can be either potentially deficient or toxic in this element. Selenium is accumulated in excessive amounts by a relatively few species of plants. Several of these plants, termed indicator species, occur in the western Great Basin; however, selenium toxicity is not a problem in Nevada for domestic livestock. The detection of marginal dietary deficiencies of selenium is of much greater economic importance to the livestock industry than an excess of this element.

Selenium occurs as a trace element in the composition of various minerals. Selenium levels are very low in volcanic rocks of …

Nomenclatural Changes And New Species Of Scolytidae (Coleoptera), Part Iv, Stephen L. Wood

Great Basin Naturalist

Presented from a worldwide treatment of the Scolytidae are cases of new synonymy, replacement names for newly detected junior homonyms, and the descriptions of species new to science as follows. New synonymy includes: Acanthotomicus quadrituberculatus (Schedl) ( = Mimips fallax Eggers), Amasa schlichi (Stebbing)(= Xyleborus glaber Eggers, Xyleborus brevipennis Schedl), Ambrosiodmus apicalus (Blandford) (= Xyleboruscristatus Hagedorn, Xyleborus fabricii Schedl), Ambrosiodmus asperatus (Blandford) (= Xyleborus citri Beeson, Xyleborus cristatuloides Schedl), Ambrosiodmus colossus (Blandford) (= Xyleborus szentivanyi Schedl), Ambrosiodmus declivispinatus (Schedl) (= Xyleborus tectus Schedl), Ambrosiodmus funereus (Lea) (= Xyleborus nepos robustus Schedl), Ambrosiodmus hagedorui (Iglesias) (-Ambrosiodmus guatemalensis Hopkins), Ambrosiodmus lewisi …

Automatic Meshing Of Free-Form Deformation Solids, Ssuta S. Hsu Apr 1989

Automatic Meshing Of Free-Form Deformation Solids, Ssuta S. Hsu

Theses and Dissertations

Development of computer models and subsequent finite element analysis, are important aspects of modern engineering design. In this process, the geometry creation and finite element analysis software are well developed; however, the process of discretizing a geometry into a proper finite element model is time consuming and tedious. The work presented here uses the free-form deformation method to create smooth solid models, and invokes a solid subdivision and transition method to generate the hexahedron finite elements. The combination of these two techniques provides an automatic mesh generator that is easy to use, creates acceptable hexahedron elements for finite element analysis, …

Niklaus R. Schweizer, His Hawaiian Excellency, New York: Peter Lang Publishing, Inc., 1987, $54.00. 267 Pp., David Beck

Swiss American Historical Society Review

As historical fiction, His Hawaiian Excellency cannot be judged wholly as history nor as fiction. The author himself faced different problems than a historian normally does in creating his work. Therefore, different questions must be asked, when judging the success of this work, than would be asked if it were a more standard historical piece. Most important among these are whether the work accurately represents the sources, and whether the author tells a good story. In addition, the author's purposes must be taken into account: are these successfully met? Schweizer sets out to "shed some light on a colorful and …

Spatial And Temporal Variability In Perennial And Annual Vegetation At Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, Anne C. Cully, Jack F. Cully Jr. Jan 1989

Spatial And Temporal Variability In Perennial And Annual Vegetation At Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, Anne C. Cully, Jack F. Cully Jr.

Great Basin Naturalist

Annual plant populations in northwestern New Mexico were found to be spatially and temporally highly variable. During favorable years annual plant species have patterns of dominance and diversity that are different from those of perennial species. Measurement of perennial plant diversity in plant communities is a poor predictor of productivity. Both perennial and annual components of plant communities should be considered in measurements of diversity and productivity.
