In Praise Of Ourselves: Stories To Tell, William A. Wilson
In Praise Of Ourselves: Stories To Tell, William A. Wilson
BYU Studies
William A. Wilson writes of the importance of keeping family histories as a way to include ourselves and our families in the ever expanding canon of literature and as a means of giving direction to our lives. Wilson shares his own family stories through the lives of his grandfather, Robert Green, and his mother, Lucile Green Wilson. Both were Mormon settlers in Riddyville, Utah. He tells of their adventures at Lake Bonneville and in McCammon and about their everyday family interactions.

The Order Of Santo Stefano In The Levant: An Unpublished Account Of A Voyage In 1627, Ilona Klein, Christopher Kleinhenz
Faculty Publications
On 12 April 1627 a fleet of six galleys belonging to the Order of Santo Stefano set sail from Livorno on their expedition "contro il comune nemico"–the Turks. This journey would take them along the western and southern coast of Italy, through the Ionian Sea to the Peloponnese and across the Aegean Sea to the Dardanelles. Along the way the sailors encountered many vessels, both friend and foe, heard reports of sea battles and movements of ships in those waters, and listened to an account of a miracle wrought by the Virgin Mary. After having engaged in two fierce skirmishes …
Teaching In A Liberal Arts College: How Foreign Language Courses Contribute To "Writing Across The Curriculum" Programs, Ilona Klein
Faculty Publications
This essay shares some thoughts about the need for interaction between foreign language instructors and English teachers, both in high schools and at the university level. As a foreign language teacher for the past nine years (the last four in a liberal arts college), I have encountered several problems and difficulties that could be overcome, I believe, if English, Writing, and Foreign Language departments addressed them together. I do not claim to be able to give definite answers, since many pedagogical concepts concerting L2 acquisition/learning and their possible application to writing programs remain misunderstood or are presently debated by teacher …

"Official Science Often Lacks Humility": Humor, Science, And Technology In Levi's Storie Naturali, Ilona Klein
Faculty Publications
Primo Levi's third book, written under the pseudonym of "Damiano Malabaila," was published for the first time in the fall of 1966 by Einaudi. Storie naturali is a collection of fifteen short stories which represent the beginning of a new Cours in the author's narrative. After the autobiographical Survival in Auschwitz of 1947 and his second book of 1963 The Reawakening–both dealing with the Holocaust and its aftermath–Storie Naturali ("Natural Stories," not yet published in English) represented such a break in the literary patter established by Levi up to that point, that the author decided to use a …

For A More Accurate Reading Of Goethe's "Classiker Und Romantiker In Italien . . ", Ilona Klein
Faculty Publications
The second volume of Uber Künst und AltertJmm, published in 1820, contained an article by Goethe, the first part of which he had already written two years earlier, entitled "Classiker und Romantiker in Italien, sich heftig bekämpfend" (classicists and romantics in Italy fighting intensely). This report was meant to be a description of the Italian literary scene.during the second decade of the nineteenth century.

Healthy And Unhealthy Forms Of Religiousness Manifested By Psychotherapy Clients: An Empirical Investigation, P. Scott Richards, Steven A. Smith, Lanay F. Davis
Faculty Publications
This study investigated whether 49 Mormon psychotherapy clients and 51 Mormon nonclients differed on a number of religious and psychological variables. The data were analyzed using analysis of covariance, controlling for social desirability, education level, and occupation status. Clients scored higher than nonclients on shame and lower on existential well-being. There were no significant differences between clients and nonclients on religious orientation, religious wellbeing, moral reasoning, and guilt. Females scored much higher on guilt, and female clients scored much higher on shame; there were no other gender differences. Subjects showed a preference for Stage 4 moral reasoning, and 92% were …
Hyobranchial Apparatus Of The Cryptobranchoidea (Amphibia), Douglas C. Cox, Wilmer W. Tanner
Hyobranchial Apparatus Of The Cryptobranchoidea (Amphibia), Douglas C. Cox, Wilmer W. Tanner
Great Basin Naturalist
This report is a comparative study of the hyobranchial skeleton of the three species in the family Cyptobranchidae and four species of the family Hynobiidae, all of which are figured. Anatomical differences between the cryptobranchids and their relationship to hynobiids are noted and discussed. Reference is made to a relationship that may exist between these families and other salamander families, particularly the possible relationship of the Hynobiidae to the super families Ambystomatoidea or possibly Plethodontoidea.

Lesser Prairie-Chicken Nest Site Selection And Vegetation Characteristics In Tebuthiuron-Treated And Untreated Sand Shinnery Oak In Texas, D. A. Haukos, L. M. Smith
Great Basin Naturalist
Radiotelemetry was used to evaluate Lesser Prairie-Chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) nesting response to herbicidal conversion of sand shinnery oak (Quercus havardii) rangeland to grassland. Hens selected nest sites in residual grasses within lightly grazed sand shinnery oak habitat with >75% vertical screening in the first 0.33 m and 50% overhead cover.
Checklist Of Recent Mollusca Of Wyoming, Usa, Dorothy E. Beetle
Checklist Of Recent Mollusca Of Wyoming, Usa, Dorothy E. Beetle
Great Basin Naturalist
Wyoming lacks a rich molluscan fauna due to its considerable elevation, extremes of temperature, the short period between killing frosts, scanty moisture, and intermittent creeks. Recent mollusks found in the state total 42 genera (109 species), including 6 genera (23 species) of bivalves, 15 genera (42 species) of freshwater gastropods, and 21 genera (44 species) of land gastropods. Synonymy, the counties in which each species was collected, and habitat notes are given.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Real-Fluid Mutual Diffusion Coefficients With The Lennard-Jones Potential Model, Richard L. Rowley, J. M. Stoker
Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Real-Fluid Mutual Diffusion Coefficients With The Lennard-Jones Potential Model, Richard L. Rowley, J. M. Stoker
Faculty Publications
Mutual diffusion coefficients for selected alkanes in carbon tetrachloride were calculated using molecular dynamics and Lennard-Jones (LJ) potentials. Use of effective spherical LJ parameters is desirable when possible for two reasons: (i) computer time is saved due to the simplicity of the model and (ii) the number of parameters in the model is kept to a minimum. Results of this study indicate that mutual diffusivity is particularly sensitive to the molecular size cross parameter, σ12, and that the commonly used Lorentz–Berthelot rules are inadequate for mixtures in which the component structures differ significantly. Good agreement between simulated and experimental mutual …
Systematics And Distribution Of The Winter Stonefly Genus Capnia (Plecoptera: Capniidae) In North America, C. Riley Nelson, Richard W. Baumann
Systematics And Distribution Of The Winter Stonefly Genus Capnia (Plecoptera: Capniidae) In North America, C. Riley Nelson, Richard W. Baumann
Great Basin Naturalist
The genus Capnia in North America is reviewed and compared to other genera in the family. The genus is divided into 10 species groups. A key to the 51 species of Capnia in North America is given along with a listing of type localities, type repositories, diagnoses, and distributions. New illustrations of structures bearing characters important for identification and classification are presented. An annotation of the list of Capnia of North America given by Stark, Szczytko, and Baumann (1986) reflecting current generic placement of species is produced. From this list Capnia bakeri and sugluka are moved to Mesocapnia. Capnia …
Comparison Of Regression Methods For Biomass Estimation Of Sagebrush And Bunchgrass, Robin J. Tausch
Comparison Of Regression Methods For Biomass Estimation Of Sagebrush And Bunchgrass, Robin J. Tausch
Great Basin Naturalist
Regression analyses for plant biomass estimation from physical measurements of individual plant dimensions that are nonlinear have generally used some form of the allometric equation. Use of this equation has most often involved logarithmic transformation of the variables (power regression). Transformation, however, introduces systematic bias into the analyses. Power regression was compared with a bias correction technique and with nonlinear regression for the prediction of the total foliage biomass (phytomass). Crown volumes of one sagebrush and one perennial grass species were used for these evaluations. The bias correction factor was uniformly applied to all the predicted values from power regression. …
