An Adaptive Learning Model Which Accommodates Asymmetric Error Costs And Choice-Based Samples, James V. Hansen, James B. Mcdonald, Rayman D. Meservy
An Adaptive Learning Model Which Accommodates Asymmetric Error Costs And Choice-Based Samples, James V. Hansen, James B. Mcdonald, Rayman D. Meservy
Faculty Publications
This paper introduces an adaptive-learning model, EGB2, which optimizes over a parameter space to fit data to a family of models based on maximum-likelihood criteria. We also show how EGB2 can be modified to handle asymmetric costs of Type I and Type II errors, thereby minimizing misclassification costs. It has been shown that standard methods of computing maximum-likelihood estimators of qualitative-response models are generally inconsistent when applied to sample data with different proportions than found in the universe from which the sample is drawn. We investigate how a choice estimator, based on weighting each observation's contribution to the log-likelihood function, …
A Provably Convergent Dynamic Training Method For Multi-Layer Perceptron Networks, Timothy L. Andersen, Tony R. Martinez
A Provably Convergent Dynamic Training Method For Multi-Layer Perceptron Networks, Timothy L. Andersen, Tony R. Martinez
Faculty Publications
This paper presents a new method for training multi-layer perceptron networks called DMP1 (Dynamic Multilayer Perceptron 1). The method is based upon a divide and conquer approach which builds networks in the form of binary trees, dynamically allocating nodes and layers as needed. The individual nodes of the network are trained using a genetic algorithm. The method is capable of handling real-valued inputs and a proof is given concerning its convergence properties of the basic model. Simulation results show that DMP1 performs favorably in comparison with other learning algorithms.
Prayer In School: Engel V. Vitale, Douglas Marteeny
Prayer In School: Engel V. Vitale, Douglas Marteeny
Brigham Young University Prelaw Review
As another election year approaches, the issue of prayer in school is revisited in many political debates. The conservatives often demand their right to pray in school should be protected by the Constitution, whereas, on the other end of the spectrum citizens argue for a stronger, higher wall separating church and state. In this report I will first discuss the Engel v. Vitale case, as argued before the Supreme Court, which deemed illegal prayer-in-school. I will then highlight some commentaries given regarding this case. Lastly, I will offer my own resolution to the many debates surrounding the prayer in school …
An Integrated Framework For Learning And Reasoning, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Tony R. Martinez
An Integrated Framework For Learning And Reasoning, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Tony R. Martinez
Faculty Publications
Learning and reasoning are both aspects of what is considered to be intelligence. Their studies within AI have been separated historically, learning being the topic of machine learning and neural networks, and reasoning falling under classical (or symbolic) AI. However, learning and reasoning are in many ways interdependent. This paper discusses the nature of some of these interdependencies and proposes a general framework called FLARE, that combines inductive learning using prior knowledge together with reasoning in a propositional setting. Several examples that test the framework are presented, including classical induction, many important reasoning protocols and two simple expert systems.
Poetic Diction And Parallel Word Pairs In The Book Of Mormon, Kevin L. Barney
Poetic Diction And Parallel Word Pairs In The Book Of Mormon, Kevin L. Barney
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Hebrew poetry is based on various patterns of parallelism. Parallel lines are in turn created by the use of parallel words, that is, pairs of words bearing generally synonymous or antithetic meanings. Since the 1930s, scholars have come to realize that many of these “word pairs” were used repeatedly in a formulaic fashion as the basic building blocks of different parallel lines. The Book of Mormon reflects numerous parallel structures, including synonymous parallelism, antithetic parallelism, and chiasmus. As word pairs are a function of parallelism, the presence of such parallel structures in the Book of Mormon suggests the possible presence …
The Book Of Mosiah: Thoughts About Its Structure, Purposes, Themes, And Authorship, Gary L. Sturgess
The Book Of Mosiah: Thoughts About Its Structure, Purposes, Themes, And Authorship, Gary L. Sturgess
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The book of Mosiah is a cultic history of the reign of Mosiah2, structured around three royal ceremonies in 124, 121, and 92–91 BC. On each of these occasions, newly discovered scriptures were read to the people, stressing the dangers of monarchical government and celebrating the deliverance of the people and the revelation of Jesus Christ. This book existed independently hundreds of years before Mormon engraved it onto the gold plates. The most likely occasion for the writing of such a book was in the aftermath of Mosiah’s death when Alma the Younger needed to undermine the Amlicite bid to …
North American Types Of Oxytropis Dc. (Leguminosae) At The Natural History Museum And Royal Botanic Garden, England, With Nomenclatural Comments And A New Variety, S. L. Welsh
Great Basin Naturalist
Specimens of Oxytropis in the herbaria of The Natural History Museum and Royal Botanic Garden were examined to interpret their role in nomenclature. This is the first attempt at a systematic overview of specimens so important in understanding the genus as it occurs in North America. The review of specimens at BM and K during the present research has resulted in realignment of names of some of the taxa. Oxytropis campestris var. gracils (A. Nelson) Barneby is recognized herein as being predated by O. campestris var. spicata Hook., O. sericea var. spicata (Hook.) Barneby is replaced by O. sericea var. …

Journal of East Asian Libraries
At present the on-line public access catalog (OPAC) still remains the primary tool for patrons searching for materials in the academic and research libraries in North America. The performance of an OPAC has a direct impact on how effectively a library provides information and services to its users. The increasing demand for information access to a wide spectrum of resources in various formats constantly challenges library professionals, library automation scientists, and library system vendors to deliver more powerful and sophisticated OPAC systems with higher performance levels at lower costs. The OPAC systems in East Asian libraries have to meet even …

From Visiting Scholar To Immigrant: A Memoir, Gustav T. Durrer
From Visiting Scholar To Immigrant: A Memoir, Gustav T. Durrer
Swiss American Historical Society Review
In younger years, with youthful optimism, one tends to project the future on a fairly straight line. Life usually alters that course. Circumstances change, and we change with them. Events in and around us shape our destiny. Roadblocks and crossroads force us to choose an unplanned route. 1939-45 was such a time when many lives were drastically changed, due to the dramatic developments in Europe and the Far East. These events were to alter the course of my life also.
