Constructing High Order Perceptrons With Genetic Algorithms, Timothy L. Andersen, Tony R. Martinez May 1998

Constructing High Order Perceptrons With Genetic Algorithms, Timothy L. Andersen, Tony R. Martinez

Faculty Publications

Constructive induction, which is defined to be the process of constructing new and useful features from existing ones, has been extensively studied in the literature. Since the number of possible high order features for any given learning problem is exponential in the number of input attributes (where the order of a feature is defined to be the number of attributes of which it is composed), the main problem faced by constructive induction is in selecting which features to use out of this exponentially large set of potential features. For any feature set chosen the desirable characteristics are minimality and generalization …

Quantum Associative Memory With Exponential Capacity, Tony R. Martinez, Dan A. Ventura May 1998

Quantum Associative Memory With Exponential Capacity, Tony R. Martinez, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

Quantum computation uses microscopic quantum level effects to perrform computational tasks and has produced results that in some cases are exponentially faster than their classical counterparts by taking advantage of quantum parallelism. The unique characteristics of quantum theory may also be used to create a quantum associative memory with a capacity exponential in the number of neurons. This paper covers necessary high-level quantum mechanical ideas and introduces a simple quantum associative memory. Further, it provides discussion, empirical results and directions for future work.

Mite Parasitism Of Mosquitoes In Central Wyoming, Margo Frost Spurrier Apr 1998

Mite Parasitism Of Mosquitoes In Central Wyoming, Margo Frost Spurrier

Great Basin Naturalist

Parasitic larval mites including Thyasides sphagnorum were collected from mosquitoes captured in New Jersey light traps over a period of 6 yr and from landings during 1 collecting season in Natrona County, Wyoming. Overall mite prevalence on mosquitoes was 0.42% and abundance was 0.76%. Prevalence on Aedes dorsalis was significantly greater than on other host species. Comparison of light trap data and landing data suggests that parasitized mosquitoes may seek blood meals more frequently than non-parasitized mosquitoes.

Breeding Birds At The Idaho National Engineering And Environmental Laboratory, 1985–1991, James R. Belthoff, Leon R. Powers, Timothy D. Reynolds

Great Basin Naturalist

During the summers of 1985–1991, bird censuses were conducted along 13 permanent routes located at the 2315-km2 Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL, formerly INEL) in southeastern Idaho. The objectives of the surveys were to (1) compare avifauna in and near facility complex sites with remote, relatively undisturbed habitats, (2) identify trends in populations of sagebrush-obligate species and other common shrub-steppe species, and (3) determine the presence, abundance, and population status of species of special concern. Five routes were official U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division 40.0-km Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) routes (formerly administered by the U.S. Fish …

Spiritual Issues And Interventions In The Treatment Of Patients With Eating Disorders, P. Scott Richards, Randy K. Hardman, Harold A. Frost, Michael E. Berrett

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This article examines the roles of religion and spirituality in the etiology and treatment of eating disorders. After briefly reviewing the relevant research, we discuss the most common and significant religious and spiritual issues wer have observed with LDS eating disorder patients including negative images or perceptions of God, feelings of spiritual unworthiness and shame, and fear of abandonment by God. We briefly describe process considerations for using spiritual interventions and concluded by describing seven spiritual interventions we have found especially useful in treating LDS eating disorder patients, including spiritual teachings, spiritual bibliotherapy, and prayer.

Determination Of The Asymmetry Parameter And Scattering Coefficient Of Turbid Media From Spatially Resolved Reflectance Measurments, Matthew R. Jones, Yukio Yamada Mar 1998

Determination Of The Asymmetry Parameter And Scattering Coefficient Of Turbid Media From Spatially Resolved Reflectance Measurments, Matthew R. Jones, Yukio Yamada

Faculty Publications

We present a technique for determining the asymmetry parameter and scattering coefficient of turbid media from spatially resolved reflectance measurements. This technique will contribute to the development of medical applications in which it is necessary to predict the distribution and propagation of light in tissue. Based on Monte Carlo simulations, we derived correlations which relate the reduced scattering coefficient and the asymmetry parameter to the relative reflectance curve. Initial estimates of the optical properties are obtained from these correlations. Final values are obtained by adjusting the optical parameters and repeating the Monte Carlo simulations until the simulated reflectance pattern matches …

Who Am I? A Study Of The Transition From Individual To Organizational Identity Within The Merger Of Brigham Young University's Communication Media, Tania H. Cantrell Feb 1998

Who Am I? A Study Of The Transition From Individual To Organizational Identity Within The Merger Of Brigham Young University's Communication Media, Tania H. Cantrell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Most of the information documented in this paper is from my observation and interview journals (see Works Cited page). A notation such as "Visit 6.1" denotes the first visit done in the sixth week of the semester, and one such as "Visit 7.2" means the second visit in the seventh week. There is no numerical correspondence to days of the week; I varied the days and times of my visits to capture a more holistic understanding of the newsroom. The parenthetical references following the "Visit" annotations should clarify this. (For example, Visit 1.1 (Monday, 8 September 1997) differs …

The Kunz Family: Over A Hundred Years In Mormonism, Phillip R. Kunz, Paul A. Nielson Feb 1998

The Kunz Family: Over A Hundred Years In Mormonism, Phillip R. Kunz, Paul A. Nielson

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The focus of this paper is the Kunz Family, or the American descendants of Johannes Kunz and Rosina Katharina Klossner Kunz, our great-great-grandparents. Johannes was born on the 16th of September 1803 at Tschueppls in Zwischenflueh. in Diemtigen Canyon, Bern. Switzerland. Rosina was born on 9 December 1802 on the Blatten farm in Zwischenflueh. They were married in Diemtigen on the 9 February 1821. Johannes and one of his twin daughters were the first converts in the family to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). Two other children followed them into the Church and eventually the Mormon …

Case Studies In Early Swiss Immigration To Utah: The Mathis And Bryner Families, Paul K. Savage Feb 1998

Case Studies In Early Swiss Immigration To Utah: The Mathis And Bryner Families, Paul K. Savage

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Hans Ulrich could not see his own hand waving in front of his face--that is, ever since the accident. Hans Ulrich Bryner, Jr., was a talented and prosperous young man. His father's family had moved to Wiedikon, a small village just a stone's throw across the river Sihl from Zürich, and in 1839 they had purchased a large home near the Center of town. Hans Ulrich Bryner, Sr., was a farmer by day, and a shoemaker by night, and through thrift, industry, and piety, the family had gained the respect of their neighbors. In 1846, Hans Ulrich, Sr., was granted …

Thermal Equilibrium Of Warm Clouds Of Charge With Small Aspect Ratio, Deborah L. Paulson, Ross L. Spencer Feb 1998

Thermal Equilibrium Of Warm Clouds Of Charge With Small Aspect Ratio, Deborah L. Paulson, Ross L. Spencer

Faculty Publications

Global thermal equilibrium computations are presented for non-neutral plasmas whose radial size is much larger than their axial thickness. Axial and radial density profiles are computed for both ideal and nonideal Penning trap fields. Simple results are obtained in the limits of both low and high central density. Comparison is made to the grid calculations of Mason et al. [Phys. Plasmas 3 (5), 1502 (1996)].

Randomly Amplified Polymorphic Dna Analysis (Rapd) Of Artemisia Subgenus Tridentatae Species And Hybrids, E. Durant Mcarthur, Joann Mudge, Renée Van Buren, W. Ralph Andersen, Stewart C. Sanderson, David G. Babbel Jan 1998

Randomly Amplified Polymorphic Dna Analysis (Rapd) Of Artemisia Subgenus Tridentatae Species And Hybrids, E. Durant Mcarthur, Joann Mudge, Renée Van Buren, W. Ralph Andersen, Stewart C. Sanderson, David G. Babbel

Great Basin Naturalist

Species of Artemisia (subgenus Tridentatae) dominate much of western North America. The genetic variation that allows this broad ecological adaptation is facilitated by hybridization and polyploidization. Three separate studies were performed in this group using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Fifty-seven 10-mer primers generated nearly 400 markers from genomic DNA obtained from leaf tissue. These studies were (1) a measure of the variability of plants within and between populations and between subspecies using 5 A. tridentata ssp. wyomingensis populations, 2 A. cana ssp. cana populations, and 1 A. cana ssp. viscidula population; (2) an examination of the hypothesis that …

Identity Of Mertensia Oblongifolia (Nutt.) G. Don (Boraginaceae) And Its Allies In Western North America, Ahmed M. Warfa

Great Basin Naturalist

The current status of Mertensia oblongifolia (Nutt.) G. Don and its allied taxa is surveyed. On the bases of continuously coherent morphological characters and/or regionally correlated variations, more than 30 taxa, including species, subspecies, varieties, and 1 forma, previously considered different from M. oblongifolia, are now placed under synonymy of this species. Those taxa currently known as M. fusiformis Greene, M. bakeri Greene, and M. bakeri var. osterhoutii Williams are among the new synonyms. Typification, taxonomy, and morphological problems of M. oblongifolia are discussed.

The Bridge

"Way out in the ocean, the water is as blue as the petals of

the most beautiful cornflower and as clear as the cleanest

glass, but it is very deep, deeper than an anchor cable can

reach; many church steeples would have to be placed one on

top of the other in order to stretch from the bottom up to the

surface of the water. Down there live the Merpeople."
