Detecting Remnants Of The Past: Archaeo-Geophysical Prospection Of Fremont Sites In Southern Utah Valley, Jacob P. Jepsen Jul 2021

Detecting Remnants Of The Past: Archaeo-Geophysical Prospection Of Fremont Sites In Southern Utah Valley, Jacob P. Jepsen

Theses and Dissertations

The variable contexts of Fremont habitation sites in Utah Valley often make identification of those sites very challenging for archaeologists. Pit houses and other structures throughout the valley are frequently in plowed fields or other disturbed contexts that obscure their more exact location and nature. The application of geophysical technologies at archaeological sites throughout the world, including in North America, has proven to be an effective means of subsurface archaeological survey. However, geophysical techniques have been underutilized in Fremont archaeology. This paper reports on the employment of two geophysical methods, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and fluxgate gradiometer surveys, at three known …

Precision Maritime Landing Of Autonomous Multirotor Aircraft With Real-Time Kinematic Gnss, Matthew Kent Rydalch Jul 2021

Precision Maritime Landing Of Autonomous Multirotor Aircraft With Real-Time Kinematic Gnss, Matthew Kent Rydalch

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis two methods were developed for precise maritime landing of an autonomous multirotor aircraft based on real-time kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). The first method called RTK-localized method (RLM) uses RTK GNSS measurements to localize a sea vessel and execute the landing. RLM was demonstrated outdoors in hardware and landed on a physically simulated boat called a mock-boat with an average landing error of 9.7 cm. The mock-boat was actuated to have boat-like motion and a forward velocity of ~2 m/s. This method showed that accurate landing is possible with RTK GNSS as the primary means …

The Book Of Mormon Translation Process, Grant Hardy Jul 2021

The Book Of Mormon Translation Process, Grant Hardy

BYU Studies

Joseph Smith did not offer many details about the translation process for the Book of Mormon, other than affirming that it was done through “the gift and power of God.”1In 1831, at a Church conference where he was invited to share more information, he declined, saying that “it was not expedient for him to relate these things.”2 Along with the golden plates, he had been given a set of Nephite “interpreters” (Mosiah 8:13; Ether 4:5), which he described as “two stones in silver bows” (JS–H 1:35), apparently looking something like a pair of glasses or spectacles. According …

Christ As Our Law: He Who Sanctifies, Enlightens, And Saves, Keith Lane Jul 2021

Christ As Our Law: He Who Sanctifies, Enlightens, And Saves, Keith Lane

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

The doctrine of Christ is a living, practical theology of discipleship (see 2 Nephi 31:21, Doctrine and Covenants 10:62). With the revelations given to Joseph Smith, particularly those in the Doctrine and Covenants, the faith of the Latter-day Saints is grounded in the realm of practical behavior— of religious life ordered for individuals and the Church by laws, principles, and, above all, covenants and ordinances given us by Deity. But all these point to Christ himself as the law. Clearly there are elements of correct belief or orthodoxy, but these are primarily useful because they point us to faith in …

Uncovering The Voice Of The Lord: Analysis And Implications Of Joseph Smith’S Letter From Liberty Jail, Adam R. Jardine, Seth N. Hord Jul 2021

Uncovering The Voice Of The Lord: Analysis And Implications Of Joseph Smith’S Letter From Liberty Jail, Adam R. Jardine, Seth N. Hord

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Joseph Smith’s experience in Liberty Jail stands among the most faith-challenging, helpless, and discouraging moments of his life. His letters during this time are of such significance that portions have been canonized as scripture and are among the most cited sections by church leaders in general conference.1 This paper provides an exegesis of portions of Joseph Smith’s Liberty Jail letters with a specific focus on the transition in pronoun usage in his dictation of Doctrine and Covenants 121 and 122. Despite ample scholarly attention on these letters, there appears to be limited discussion regarding Joseph’s change of language in the …

“Come, See The Place”: Teaching Students The Value Of Historic Sites, Scott C. Esplin Jul 2021

“Come, See The Place”: Teaching Students The Value Of Historic Sites, Scott C. Esplin

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

The scriptures repeatedly speak of holy places. For example, the Old Testament frequently uses the term to refer to the tabernacle or later the temple, including designating a portion of both structures as “the holy place” and “the most holy place” (see Exodus 26:33–34; 1 Kings 6:16; Ezekiel 41:4).1 New Testament passages generally adopt the same usage, with the book of Acts twice recording when Jewish leaders accused Stephen and later Paul of corrupting the “holy place” by their teaching about Jesus of Nazareth (see Acts 6:13; 21:28). Foretelling when “the end [would] come,” the Savior himself cautioned followers in …

Section 77 And Book Of Revelation Scholarship, Nicholas J. Frederick Jul 2021

Section 77 And Book Of Revelation Scholarship, Nicholas J. Frederick

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

The book of Revelation is a complicated book, to say the least. For those of us who teach courses covering the book of Revelation, we often rely upon Joseph Smith’s questions and answers on the book of Revelation, now canonized as Doctrine and Covenants 77, as a means of providing some answers to all the mysterious complexity John’s vision presents to us. However, the question inevitably arises as to how closely the answers provided in section 77 adhere to the text of the book of Revelation as well as the opinion of New Testament scholars, both those contemporary to Joseph …

Learning That Leads To God, Russell T. Osguthorpe Jul 2021

Learning That Leads To God, Russell T. Osguthorpe

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

While teaching an instructional design course, I would often begin the semester by asking students to define the word learning. On the surface, that seems like a relatively simple task, but most students struggled to craft a definition that satisfied them. We would then explore scholarly definitions of the word, often with equally unsatisfying results. Scholars in the fields of education and psychology usually focus on three primary aspects of the word learning: (1) the acquisition of new knowledge or a new skill (2) that persists over time and (3) is not due only to growth and development.

Is Sure Knowledge An Ideal For Everyone Or One Spiritual Gift Among Many?, Blair Dee Hodges, Patrick Q. Mason Jul 2021

Is Sure Knowledge An Ideal For Everyone Or One Spiritual Gift Among Many?, Blair Dee Hodges, Patrick Q. Mason

BYU Studies

“I’d like to bear my testimony. I know the Church is true. I know that Heavenly Father lives and loves us. I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior. I know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet and restored the Church on the earth. I know the Book of Mormon is the word of God. I know that the Church is led by living prophets today. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.”

The Joseph Smith Translation Of The Bible: Ancient Material Restored Or Inspired Commentary? Canonical Or Optional? Finished Or Unfinished?, Jared W. Ludlow Jul 2021

The Joseph Smith Translation Of The Bible: Ancient Material Restored Or Inspired Commentary? Canonical Or Optional? Finished Or Unfinished?, Jared W. Ludlow

BYU Studies

Joseph Smith began an ambitious program to revise the biblical text in June 1830, not long after the organization of the Church of Christ and the publication of the Book of Mormon. While the result came to be known as the Joseph Smith Translation (JST), it was not a literal word-for-word translation of ancient biblical languages from a manuscript but more of an inspired revision or paraphrase based on the King James Version in English, carried out primarily between June 1830 and July 1833.1 Since Joseph Smith never specifically addressed how or exactly why he made the particular changes …

“Oh Say, What Is Truth?”: Approaches To Doctrine, Michael Goodman Jul 2021

“Oh Say, What Is Truth?”: Approaches To Doctrine, Michael Goodman

BYU Studies

The restored gospel of Jesus Christ, like other religious traditions, claims to be based on true doctrines.2 The above hymn, included in the first edition of the Pearl of Great Price, encapsulates the deep longing for truth by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Statements by Church leaders abound extolling the virtue and power of truth, but such statements often beg the question, What is truth? Scripture states that “truth is knowledge of things as they are, and as they were, and as they are to come.”3 Church curricular material further states that “divine …

Is The Song Of Solomon Scripture?, Dana M. Pike, Eric A. Eliason Jul 2021

Is The Song Of Solomon Scripture?, Dana M. Pike, Eric A. Eliason

BYU Studies

Many Latter-day Saint youth may have had their first exposure to the Song of Solomon in seminary or on a mission. “Tear it out of your Bible,” “Staple the pages together,” or “Write ‘DO NOT READ’ on the title page with your red scripture marker!” are variants of stories passed on about what seminary teachers or mission presidents have advised. Since such sensational admonitions are almost guaranteed to pique teenagers’ curiosity, they are presumably more alive in student rumors than in the actual practice of seminary and institute instructors or mission leaders. Such stories may be reactions to Bruce R. …

Influencing Perceptions Of Stem Through The Best Stem Books List, Scott Bartholomew, Alexia Seymour Jul 2021

Influencing Perceptions Of Stem Through The Best Stem Books List, Scott Bartholomew, Alexia Seymour

Faculty Publications

One day, while discussing engineering and science as potential career options with a female student, we opened a search engine and typed in “engineer” and “scientist.” However, on the first pages of image results, only one female appeared for engineering and only a few females appeared for “scientist” (see Figure 1). This disparity was disturbing—if this student never saw another person like her filling careers in STEM fields, would she ever “picture herself” in those fields?

Using Section 84 To Emphasize The Priesthood Power Of Women, Barbara Morgan Gardner Jul 2021

Using Section 84 To Emphasize The Priesthood Power Of Women, Barbara Morgan Gardner

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

In the October 2019 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson expressed his yearning for the women of the Church to “understand that the restoration of the priesthood is just as relevant to you as a woman as it is to any man.” In the same talk, he invited the women to “gain, understand, and use the power with which you have been endowed” and to “study prayerfully all the truths you can find about priesthood power.” He encouraged the women to study Doctrine and Covenants sections 25, 84, and 107 as a starting point to increase their understanding. He then …

A Church Educator’S Guide To Identifying And Helping The Scrupulous Student, Debra Theobald Mcclendon

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Educators in the Church Educational System teach gospel doctrines and knowledge of the scriptures and also counsel students about personal issues such as strengthening testimony, learning how to receive personal revelation, working through difficult family or social circumstances, and solving specific issues in their lives. This often creates bonds of trust with students and students will often approach teachers with their intimate spiritual and temporal concerns.

How Do I Love Thee? A Latent Mixture Model Analysis Of College Dating Relationships, Aeriel Grace Halstead Jun 2021

How Do I Love Thee? A Latent Mixture Model Analysis Of College Dating Relationships, Aeriel Grace Halstead

Theses and Dissertations

Relationship researchers often assume that satisfying relationships are healthy, but is this true? We examined whether different types of college dating relationships exist if we analyze elements of relationship health that included not only global relationship satisfaction, but patterns of communication, intimate partner violence, and positive and negative appraisals of one's partner. To do this, we used latent mixture modeling in a large sample of students in committed relationships (N = 1935). Three distinct types of committed relationships emerged: unhealthy and unsatisfying (N=477), healthy and satisfying (N=703), and a group we termed healthy and satisfying but unimpressed with their partner …

Cultivating Internal Rhetoric: Lessons On Self-Directed Rhetoric From Protestant Meditation Manuals And Modern Metacognitive Theory, Jared Vanhille Jun 2021

Cultivating Internal Rhetoric: Lessons On Self-Directed Rhetoric From Protestant Meditation Manuals And Modern Metacognitive Theory, Jared Vanhille

Theses and Dissertations

Internal rhetoric describes how individuals engage in self-persuasion. Jean Nienkamp developed a theory of internal rhetoric by drawing on both the rhetorical tradition and the field of psychology. I build on Nienkamp's work by arguing that the Christian meditative practice outlined by Joseph Hall in The Arte of Divine Meditation (1607) and Edmund Calamy in The Art of Divine Meditation (1634) provides a theoretical and practical framework for performing a particular kind of internal rhetoric in which people become the rhetorical critic by reading their own beliefs and knowledge and then become the rhetor by composing self-directed arguments. This process …

< Justice > And < Open Debate >: An Ideographic Analysis Of < Freedom Of Speech >, Emily Ann Spackman Jun 2021

< Justice > And < Open Debate >: An Ideographic Analysis Of < Freedom Of Speech >, Emily Ann Spackman

Theses and Dissertations

< Freedom of speech > is a foundational ideograph in the American and more broadly, Western, tradition. Yet this term is not static in its meanings or commitments to social action. The current debate around cancel culture is the site of renegotiation of < freedom of speech > in relation to other terms such as < open debate >, < justice >, < marginalized >, < tolerance >, < democracy >, and < power >. This study is an ideographic analysis of two artifacts that represent two sides of the < freedom of speech > discussion: “A Letter on Justice and Open Debate” and “A More Specific Letter on Justice and Open Debate.” Following McGee’s theory and method, this research examines the diachronic definition of < freedom of speech > through the U. …

Critical Access Hospital Nurses' Perceptions Of Obstacles And Helpful Behaviors In End-Of-Life Care, Trissa Michelle Lyman

Theses and Dissertations

Background: The Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) system was developed to bring health care to rural populations. Although CAHs lack equipment and resources, CAH nurses still provide end-of-life (EOL) care to critically-ill and dying patients. Objectives: To determine the largest and smallest ranked obstacles and helpful behaviors to providing EOL care to rural patients as perceived by CAH nurses. Also, to determine how CAH nurses' perceptions of obstacles and helpful behaviors to providing EOL care compare to that of their urban counterparts. Methods: A cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of nurses working in 39 CAHs were sent a questionnaire. Nurse participants were …

Domestic Outsourcing: Bridging The Gap Between Urban And Rural America, Colby Nelson

Marriott Student Review

With rural communities struggling to keep up with urban powerhouses of economic activity, domestic outsourcing of business services represents one possible solution. As high-skill job opportunities are distributed beyond the suburbs of technology hubs, rural communities will gain much-needed economic hope and reduce the consequences of brain drain. At the same time, urban centers will find relief from the symptoms of growing population pressures like the California housing crisis and the skills gap in local talent pools. Based on research on startup support policies in Southeast Europe, businesses and governments should focus on enabling, educating, and empowering rural business leaders …
