A History Of Preston, Idaho, Clarence G. Judy

Unlike most communities of Cache Valley, the greater Preston area, known then as Worm Creek, was settled by individual enterprise. In 1868 Dennis W. Winn became the first settler in that part of Worm Creek known as the "Flat" or "Sandridge" which later became Preston. Other settlers located along Worm Creek to the east.

3. Joseph Smith, as a young …

This amended King James Version, although not fully completed, has been published under the title of the Inspired Version of the Holy Scriptures, by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

An Approach To Modernity In Art, Gerrit De-Jong Jr. Apr 1959

An Approach To Modernity In Art, Gerrit De-Jong Jr.

BYU Studies

Writing to defend modern art, the author first discusses some of the prejudiced and false assumptions made by people when they hear the word modern in connection with artistic expression. Every artistic age, whether in regard to painting or music, dance or literature, interior design or architecture, has been modern to those who experienced it, and even today's classics were often met with skepticism in their time. Accustomed to established norms, audiences and consumers of art are not certain how to respond to new conventions set forth in modern artistic works. Looking at the beauty of form rather than the …

The Wages Of Sin In Hawthorne, Marden J. Clark Jan 1959

The Wages Of Sin In Hawthorne, Marden J. Clark

BYU Studies

The loss of innocence as the result of sin is a theme running throughout many of Nathaniel Hawthorne's works. Many of his works look at the consequences of sin in individuals' lives. The most common sins Hawthorne wrote into his stories are intellectual pride and the violation of another's individuality. The author follows these themes through Hawthorne's works showing that the results of sin are suffering, death, further sin, and, occasionally, a partial redemption. As Hawthorne continued to explore these themes in his works, they become increasingly more complex. Hawthorne never conclusively answers his own questions about the wages of …

The Contribution Of Existentialism, Truman G. Madsen Jan 1959

The Contribution Of Existentialism, Truman G. Madsen

BYU Studies

Although a wide gap exists between existential thought and logical empiricism, the influence of existentialism is growing. The author compares these two schools of thought by looking at their methods and language, their search for ultimate principles of being and knowing, the implications of their findings for man, and their relation to the principle of choice. These philosophies are then applied to a question of the freedom of man, and the possible contributions of existentialism to analytic thought are explored.

An Analysis Of The Development And Use Of Objectives For The Seminary Teachers In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, John Paul Fugal

Theses and Dissertations

The literature on educational problems and procedures gives considerable emphasis to objectives. Sometimes called aims, goals, or values, the objectives have been variously formulated according to the philosophy and environment of their authors. Great variation is found in the many codes of objectives which have existed and which now are used in education.

In examining the code of general objectives which has been published and circulated throughout the Latter-day Saint Seminary System since 1943, the writer was of the opinion that these objectives were not fully used by the seminary teachers and that they may not be those really desired …

A Study Of Early Utah-Montana Trade, Transportation, And Communication, 1847-1881, L. Kay Edrington

Theses and Dissertations

Arriving in this year, the Mormons, under Brigham Young, slowly conquered parts of the Great Basin and within a few years had produced a self-sustaining agricultural economy. production of a surplus in farm products awaited only the emergence of a "foreign" market. This market was soon forthcoming.

The developing process of Utah-Montana relations from 1847 through 1881 was a natural occurance. From the very first, men from Utah traveled northward. The Mormon experiment at Ft. Lemhi during the late 1850's was a prime example …

A Comparative Study And Evaluation Of The Latter-Day Saint And "Fundamentalist" Views Pertaining To The Practice Of Plural Marriage, Dean C. Jessee

Theses and Dissertations

Since the issuance of the Manifesto by President Wilford Woodruff on September 25, 1890, discontinuing the practice of plural marriage by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, intensive efforts have been made by dissenters to show that authority to practice polygamy has secretly continued to the present day. Claiming that the Church departed from its original teachings when it discontinued the practice of plural marriage and that the Manifesto was adopted merely as an act of appeasement, "fundamentalists" have attempted to show that the doctrine of plural marriage was revealed to the Latter-day Saints as an irrevocable decree, …
