A Comparison Of A Selected Group Of Lds Seminary Teachers In Relation To Nine Criteria For Measuring Religious Maturity, Gilbert W. Hull

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis was designed as a follow up of a study completed in 1959 which developed nine criteria for measuring religious maturity. The objective of this study was to develop a scale based on the nine criteria and administer it to seminary teachers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to explore the possibility of measuring differences in religious maturity. It was assumed that younger teachers who obtained a degree in a human behaviorally-oriented field of study would show the greatest level of religious maturity.

A record of "Desert Journey" will be made with a movement notation system adapted from Motation, an architectual movement notation system developed by Laurence Halprin of …

The Wasatch Front In 1869: A Geographical Description, Rodney Dale Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a geographical description of a specific area at a particular point in history. The Influence Of The Southern Nevada And Southern Utah Folklore Upon The Writings Of Dr. Juanita Brooks And Dr. Leroy R. Hafen, Pansy L. Hardy

Theses and Dissertations

Since no writing is entirely objective, it is the contention of this thesis that Dr. Juanita Brooks and Dr. LeRoy R. Hafen, the most authoritative writers of the Southern Nevada and Southern Utah region, were greatly influenced in their writings by the folklore of the region and of the people. The two aspects of folklore which are most prominent in their writings are, first, those which treat the supernatural aspect of divine intervention, and, second, those which surround the struggle for survival.

Folklore stories of divine intervention include the lore of divine aid given in time of great need, divine …

The Relationship Between Partonopeus De Blois And The Cupid And Psyche Tradition, Thomas H. Brown Oct 1964

The Relationship Between Partonopeus De Blois And The Cupid And Psyche Tradition, Thomas H. Brown

BYU Studies

The anonymous Old French poem Partonopeus de Blois borrows from many sources, but its links with the myth of Cupid and Psyche (as told by Apuleius in Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass) are at once obvious. With the exception of the role reversal of the sexes of the main characters, the stories appear almost identical. However, some scholars have asserted that Apuleius's work was unknown in France until after Partonopeus was composed and instead point to Celtic and Byzantine sources. The author discounts these theories and argues for a connection between Partonopeus and Apuleius's myth through the writings of Fulgentius …

Metabolism Of Thiamine And The Effect Of Some Antagonists, Russel M. Bender Aug 1964

Metabolism Of Thiamine And The Effect Of Some Antagonists, Russel M. Bender

Theses and Dissertations

To investigate the possibility that thiamine has more than one vital role in the mammalian system, it was decided to use the antagonists pyrithiamine and oxythiamine, and to utilize carbon-14 labeled compounds to more effectively study the vitamin and the above-named antagonists. To make it more effective, we felt that perhaps differences between the localization of oxythiamine and pyrithiamine could be detected in the brain. We also considered and tested the possibility that either or both of the antagonists would alter the localization of thiamine. Essentially, two procedures were used in this study. One was a counting method and the …

Is Anthropology “The Study Of Man”?, John L. Sorenson Apr 1964

Is Anthropology “The Study Of Man”?, John L. Sorenson

BYU Studies

Anthropology literally means "the study of man." However, does anthropology live up to its name? Although traditional anthropological methods worked in the study of societies in the past, traditional anthropology doesn't work as well in the study of modern complex societies. The author cites his own experience studying peoples in Utah, Venezuela, and Vietnam to highlight the problems with a traditional approach. The author feels that in order to have a truly comprehensive, unified, and systematic study of man, anthropology needs to unite with other similar scientific disciplines.

Curse Upon A God, Charlotte Winzeler Apr 1964

Curse Upon A God, Charlotte Winzeler

BYU Studies

Ben Jonson's "An Execration upon Vulcan" is an excellent example of how the poet blended classical styles with those of seventeenth-century England. Written after Jonson's library burned, the poem cursing the Vulcan God is a subtle satire of classical and Elizabethan forms as well as the popular literature of Jonson's day.

George Romney And The Michigan Gubernatorial Compaign - 1962, Richard C. Fuller

Theses and Dissertations

Politics in Michigan had been on a low plane for a number of years. The troubles were many and their roots could be found deep in the structure of the state's government.

In April of 1959, the sagging governmental structure gave way to the extent that the state was unable to meet its payroll. The result was the much publicized "Payless Pay Day" which attracted national and international interest.

Seeing that their elected officials were seemingly powerless to correct even the basic flaws in Michigan's government, many of the state's leading business and industrial leaders decided to apply their considerable …

The Origin And Original Meaning Of Sacrificial Blood Offerings As Revealed In The Bible And Modern Scriptures, Theo Emory Mckean

Theses and Dissertations

This study is concerned with the origin and original meaning of sacrificial blood offerings as practiced by the ancient Israelite people and their progenitors. "Modern" scriptural sources including the Pearl of Great Price, the Book of Mormon, and the Doctrine and Covenants are used along with the Bible as the basic reference material.
The lack of explicit information in the Bible as to the inception and meaning of sacrifice has resulted in the development of many theories which suggest that this rite had a human beginning. These theories imply that by natural expression man began to seek favor from his …
