Investigation Of Nitrogen Fixation By Three Species Of Lichen, Dortha Maloy Robinson Aug 1967

Investigation Of Nitrogen Fixation By Three Species Of Lichen, Dortha Maloy Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

One species of lichen from each of three different families (Collema wyomingensis , Caloplaca elegans (Link)T. Fries, and Parmelia molliuscula Ach.) was studied to determine whether or not these lichens can fix atmospheric nitrogen. Samples of these three lichens were collected in the early spring of 1967. Samples of each species were placed in 20-ml glass tubes which contained 5 ml of glass wool saturated with 0.5 M nitrogen-free Hoaglands nutrient solution. These tubes were sealed by heat onto a gas manifold system and evacuated. An N15- enriched atmosphere (22 atoms % N15) was introduced into the tubes from the …

Theses and Dissertations

An ecological study was conducted at Cascade Springs, Wasatch county, Utah from August 1965, to June 1967. The algae and aquatic moss species were determined and ecological information about these organisms was obtained. Physical data were also collected: bicarbonates, carbonates, free carbon dioxide, hydroxides, oxygen, pH, and temperature. The physical environment of the water was found to be very constant. Tests taken at the different study sites were consistently similar, not only during each day, but all year around. No great variation of any kind was found in the water. The Status Of The Common Crow Corvus Brachyrhynchos Brehm In The Great Basin, Gerald Low Richards

Theses and Dissertations

Due to a lack of taxonomic and distributional information concerning the Common Crow Corvus brachryhynchos Brehm inhabiting the Great Basin of North America, Johnston (1961) in one of the most recent revisions on crows, was unable to include this area in his work. Between 1965 and 1967, field trips were taken throughout the Great Basin to secure specims, and to determine to what extent the area was being utilized by crows. Ecological information such as habitat prference, nesting behavior, and interactions with other species was collected where possible. Forty-eight birds were collected from the Great Basin. A Study Of The Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel (Citellus Lateralis) In A Sagebrush-Grass Community, Dennis E. Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

Golden-mantled ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis Say) typically inhabit coniferous forest regions, but they occasionally occur in desert shrub habitats. The principal purpose of this study was to observe activities of mantled squirrels in a sagebrush community, and to ascertain factors which contribute to their success in an unusually arid habitat. Squirrels of this community belong to the subspecies C. l. lateralis; however, intergradation between typical C. l. lateralis and C. l. castanurus is evident. This community is in the Wasatch Mountains at an elevation of 5,750 feet, and in the Upper Sonoran Zone. These three conditions were not previously recorded …

A Study Of Public Speaking Abilities Of Lds Youth, Robert W. West Jan 1967

A Study Of Public Speaking Abilities Of Lds Youth, Robert W. West

Theses and Dissertations

This study deals with public speaking among teenagers. It is the sincere hope of the writer that this thesis may challenge young people and help motivate them to become better speakers. If it does this then it is partly successful. It may point out some weaknesses and habits in their own style of speaking that are handicaps rather than assets. It may also show some of the strong points of teenage public speaking in general, the writer hopes it will help young speakers want to overcome the trifles of poor speech habits to make their speaking nearer perfection.

Tristram Shandy And The Comedy Of Context, George P. Landow Oct 1966

Tristram Shandy And The Comedy Of Context, George P. Landow

BYU Studies

Columbia University literature professor George P. Landow uses Laurence Sterne’s 1750s series of novels, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, to illustrate how communication takes place. Refuting the idea that language can only convey ideas between two people when both speakers agree on what a word denotes, Landow highlights the comedy—and communication—that takes place in Sterne’s novels when characters infer meaning by what words connote. Landow writes that literature “often communicates not by denotation but by the indirect definition the context of a dramatic situation provides.”

With the use of a white flannel cloth, 358 adult D. andersoni (135 males and 223 females) were collected from 48 recreational sites during the spring and summer of 1964.
