Ancient Scrolls From The Dead Sea: Photographs And Commentary On A Unique Collection Of Scrolls, Miles Gerald Bradford Jan 1997

Ancient Scrolls From The Dead Sea: Photographs And Commentary On A Unique Collection Of Scrolls, Miles Gerald Bradford

Maxwell Institute Publications

About the Scrolls M. Gerald Bradford Scrolls from Qumran The scrolls found at Qumran form a signi cant body of religious literature. Chief among them are many biblical manuscripts, along with a number of what could be called parabiblical manuscripts, texts that were circulating at the time but were not considered part of the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible). In addition, because they appear to describe the religious beliefs and practices of a speci c religious community—presumably the one centered at Qumran—many of the Qumran scrolls can best be described as sectarian in nature.

The Masada Fragments, The Qumran Scrolls, And The New Testament, David Rolph Seely Jul 1996

The Masada Fragments, The Qumran Scrolls, And The New Testament, David Rolph Seely

BYU Studies

During the last fifty years, the Judean Desert on the western shore of the Dead Sea has yielded a wealth of textual material from many locations, evidence that has illuminated our understanding of the history of Israel and Judaism in the two centuries preceding and the two centuries following Christ. All of these manuscripts are properly referred to as the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The Fruit Of The Vine: Wine At Masada And In The New Testament, Jo Ann H. Seely

BYU Studies

Blessed art Thou, O Lord, our God, King of the Universe

who created sweet wine, good must from grapevines,

that is pleasing to a person and good for man,

that gladdens the heart and makes the face shine.

It is consolation to mourners, and those of bitter spirit forget their misery.

It is medicine to all who drink it. (to him who drinks it sensibly).

It is heart's joy, gladness, and great delight to its drinkers.

He, our God, created it of old for pleasure,

among the works established from the beginning,

so that all who drink it shall bless …

Editor's Introduction: Triptych (Inspired By Heironymus Bosch), Daniel C. Peterson Jan 1996

Editor's Introduction: Triptych (Inspired By Heironymus Bosch), Daniel C. Peterson

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

Introduction to the current issue, including editor's picks. Peterson discusses the status of Christian churches in 1820, an offer to debate Ed Decker, the quest for the historical Jesus through the Jesus Seminar and the implications of that type of scholarship on Mormonism: “Agnostic or radically revisionist critics of the restored Gospel, and fundamentalist Protestant anti-Mormons, tend to converge, united despite their other differences by their disbelief in the founding narratives and sacred scriptures of the Restoration.”

In Search Of A Transcendental Film Style: The Cinematic Art Form And The Mormon Motion Picture, Thomas J. Lefler Jan 1996

In Search Of A Transcendental Film Style: The Cinematic Art Form And The Mormon Motion Picture, Thomas J. Lefler

Theses and Dissertations

This project is an effort to establish a paradigm for reading and tracing transcendence in film art and film propaganda. It addresses the intersection of aesthetic and spiritual planes which is supported by a long and complex tradition of art within religious worship. The study selects a single film as a microcosm of larger issues of cinematic representation and spirituality, in particular the theology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). It makes a formalistic comparison of structural and and stylistic elements between a Mormon long-form narrative, Legacy (1994) with the classic Hollywood narrative on the one …

The Book Of Numbers At Qumran: Texts And Context, Dana M. Pike Jan 1996

The Book Of Numbers At Qumran: Texts And Context, Dana M. Pike

Faculty Publications

In this paper I examine the significance of the book of Numbers for the covenant community at Qumran. By way of background, I will relate the reason I chose this topic. My assignment as an editor of fragments for DJD is to prepare about sixty plates of miscellaneous and mainly unidentified fragments from Cave 4 at Qumran for publication. While some of these fragments have been identified and have been or will be published by others, I have well over 1,000 fragments with which to work. Most are quite small. Andrew Skinner, a colleague of mine at Brigham Young University, …

Seals And Sealing Among Ancient And Latter-Day Israelites, Dana M. Pike Jan 1994

Seals And Sealing Among Ancient And Latter-Day Israelites, Dana M. Pike

Faculty Publications

When a Latter-day Saint encounters the terms seal and sealing, thoughts of temples and eternal marriage come immediately to mind. In a more secular context, we may look for the "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval" when purchasing certain products, and we obtain a notary's seal on important documents. What we may not realize is that our use of secular seals and our religious concepts of sealing have a history that can be traced back several thousands of years to the ancient Near East. Knowledge of the history of seals and sealing helps us to understand the figurative use of these …

The Book Of Mormon, Historicity, And Faith, Robert L. Millet Jul 1993

The Book Of Mormon, Historicity, And Faith, Robert L. Millet

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The historicity of the Book of Mormon record is crucial. We cannot exercise faith in that which is untrue, nor can “doctrinal fiction” have normative value in our lives. Too often the undergirding assumption of those who cast doubt on the historicity of the Book of Mormon, in whole or in part, is a denial of the supernatural and a refusal to admit of revelation and predictive prophecy. Great literature, even religious literature, cannot engage the human soul and transform the human personality like scripture. Only scripture—writings and events and descriptions from real people at a real point in time, …

The Sword Of Laban As A Symbol Of Divine Authority And Kingship, Brett L. Holbrook Jan 1993

The Sword Of Laban As A Symbol Of Divine Authority And Kingship, Brett L. Holbrook

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Swords often symbolize divine authority and kingship. Numerous examples from the mythology, literature, and history of the world attest to distinct patterns. The sword of Laban from the Book of Mormon fits these patterns and can be compared to the sword of Goliath. The sword of Laban can also be traced as part of the royal regalia that provides authority throughout Nephite history and later as it appears in the restoration. The sword of Laban as associated with Joseph Smith came to be an additional witness of his authority and of the divine sanction for his work.

The Spirituality Of The Outcast In The Book Of Mormon, Todd M. Compton Jan 1993

The Spirituality Of The Outcast In The Book Of Mormon, Todd M. Compton

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

In the Book of Mormon, despised outcasts, such as the Lamanites or the poor, often have a special aptitude for spirituality, and the richer, civilized, and more overtly religious Nephites are often declining in righteousness. This phenomenon, with some characteristic specific themes, such as being excluded from a religious edifice, is found in ancient and contemporary cultures and religions. This theme points up the complexity of the Book of Mormon, which is not simple cowboys-and-Indians melodrama.
