The "Mulekites", John L. Sorenson
The "Mulekites", John L. Sorenson
BYU Studies
The Book of Mormon gives only very brief information about a group of people called Mulekites. This article discusses the origin of this people as descendents of Zedekiah and Mulek and how they might have crossed the ocean to the New World. Sorenson then examines in detail the interaction between the Mulekite group and other groups of people as told in the Book of Mormon.

Lower Goshen: Archaeology Of A Mormon Pioneer Town, Dale L. Berge
Lower Goshen: Archaeology Of A Mormon Pioneer Town, Dale L. Berge
BYU Studies
Lower Goshen, three miles northwest of present-day Goshen, Utah, was a Mormon pioneer town. Lower Goshen was settled in 1860 and abandoned by the end of the decade. The town lay undisturbed for nearly 120 years. The article discusses the artifacts found there and attempts to put together an image of life as a pioneer in Utah. Everything from glass bottles and bottle stops to log cabins, jewelry to military buttons, were found in the archaeological dig.

Narrative Description In Marco Polo's Travels: A Nonfictional Application Of Bakhtin's Chronotope, Ute Margarete Saine
Narrative Description In Marco Polo's Travels: A Nonfictional Application Of Bakhtin's Chronotope, Ute Margarete Saine
Quidditas
Throughout the text of Marco Polo's Devisement du monde, the reader is repeatedly enjoined to believe the narration. Such a captatio benevolantiae – the rhetorical convention inviting reader interest – typically takes the form of assertions, such as "I am telling nothing but the truth"; "Everybody ought too believe this"; "This is how it was"; "This is how Marco Polo saw it," and the like. The narrator even proposes to uphold the sophisticated distinction between eyewitness information, gathered firsthand, and accounts obtained from others:
We will set down things seen as seen, things heard as heard, so that our …

A Mormon Melting Pot: Ethnicity Acculturation In Cedar City, Utah, 1880-1915, Vida Leigh
A Mormon Melting Pot: Ethnicity Acculturation In Cedar City, Utah, 1880-1915, Vida Leigh
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis studies the ethnicity of the five ethnic groups found in Cedar City, Utah, during the 1880-to-1915 period. Those five groups were originally sent by Brigham Young to found the Iron Mission, as a two-fold project: (1) developing the iron mining industry, and (2) building a united community of Latter-day Saints.
The demographics, kinship, ties, marriage patterns, occupations, wealth, and elites in church government and society have been examined in detail through US censuses, Iron county assessment records, marriage records, Cedar City municipal records, LDS church records, diaries, histories, and personal histories. By comparing all the ethnic groups within …
Teaching In A Liberal Arts College: How Foreign Language Courses Contribute To "Writing Across The Curriculum" Programs, Ilona Klein
Faculty Publications
This essay shares some thoughts about the need for interaction between foreign language instructors and English teachers, both in high schools and at the university level. As a foreign language teacher for the past nine years (the last four in a liberal arts college), I have encountered several problems and difficulties that could be overcome, I believe, if English, Writing, and Foreign Language departments addressed them together. I do not claim to be able to give definite answers, since many pedagogical concepts concerting L2 acquisition/learning and their possible application to writing programs remain misunderstood or are presently debated by teacher …
Note On Mound Architecture Of The Black-Tailed Praire Dog, Richard P. Cincotta
Note On Mound Architecture Of The Black-Tailed Praire Dog, Richard P. Cincotta
Great Basin Naturalist
The development of black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) burrow mounds was monitored for three years. Entrances were flagged at points where a prairie dog was observed digging into the ground (primary entrances, n = 22) and digging out of the ground (secondary entrances, n = 8). In all samples it was observed that primary entrances became dome mounds and secondary entrances crater mounds. It is suggested that, although induced airflow (presently, a popular model) may partly explain the presence of mounds, architectural types (dome vs. crater mounds) are the result of energy constraints associated with building materials that …

Snake Creek Burial Cave And A Review Of The Quaternary Mustelids Of The Great Basin, Emilee M. Mead, Jim I. Mead
Snake Creek Burial Cave And A Review Of The Quaternary Mustelids Of The Great Basin, Emilee M. Mead, Jim I. Mead
Great Basin Naturalist
Snake Creek Burial Cave (SCBC), east central Nevada, is a unique paleontological deposit. The cave is the first natural trap excavated in the Great Basin and one of the few localities describing a valley-bottom community. The recovery of extinct Camelops sp. (camel) and Equus spp. (horse), in addition to radiometric dates, indicates at least some of the deposits to be of late Pleistocene age. Eight mustelid species have been identified from SCBC, including three species not previously reported from the late Rancholabrean of the Great Basin: Mustela nigripes (black-footed ferret), M. nivalis (least weasel), and Gulo gulo (wolverine). A review …

J. Christian Bay And His Account Of Hans Christian Andersen's Visit To Chicago, Rolf Erickson
The Bridge
The legendary Jens Christian Bay, librarian of the John Crerar Library of Chicago, and Danish-American writer, never met Hans Christian Andersen, of course, since he had been but three years old when Andersen died in 1875. And, Hans Christian Andersen never visited America though he had been offered countless invitations.

The Theological Contributions Of Johannes V. Knudsen, Axel Kildegaard
The Theological Contributions Of Johannes V. Knudsen, Axel Kildegaard
The Bridge
"The glory of God is man fully alive." That quotation attributed to lreneus, Church father and first systematic theologian, is about 1800 years old. It affords a clue in my search for the common thread that runs throughout the seemingly diverse theological interests of Johannes V. Knudsen. The Celt, lreneus, Bishop of Lyons, who lived in the volatile second century when the Christian tradition was taking shape, wrote two significant works. One defined the basic Christian teachings, and the other, Against the Heresies, answered false teachings. These works spoke also to the interests of Bishop N.F.S. Grundtvig in 19th century …
