A Reader Notes An Expression That Is Unique To Nephi
A Reader Notes An Expression That Is Unique To Nephi
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Richard Rust, professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, whose research has been published by F.A.R.M.S. in the past, has noticed phraseology that is unique to individual Book of Mormon prophets. He writes to F.A.R.M.S. that the phrase "my soul delighteth" appears to be unique to Nephi. It is a beautiful expression, which Nephi uses ten times: for example, "my soul delighteth in the scriptures" (2 Nephi 4:15); "my soul delighteth in the things of the Lord" (2 Nephi 4:16); "my soul delighteth in proving unto my people the truth of the coming of Christ" …

Books Focus On Ancient Mesoamerican Civilizations
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
New editions of two books, available at a discount from F.A.R.M.S., provide a scholarly yet readable introduction to civilization in the area where most of the events of the Book of Mormon probably took place. Both books were written by Michael D. Coe, Professor of Anthropology at Yale University. Although not written from an LDS perspective, these books provide the serious student of the Book of Mormon some very valuable background information. Both books also contain a large number of excellent photographs, maps, and line drawings, which make them not only informative to read but a pleasure to browse.

Subverting Social Order: Investigating Class Critique In Homer’S Odyssey, Riley R. Mayes
Subverting Social Order: Investigating Class Critique In Homer’S Odyssey, Riley R. Mayes
Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism
The ‘Homeric Question,’ or the question of who Homer was, has long preoccupied the minds of the Western world (Foley 2). Due to the amorphous nature of oral tradition and the lost histories of ancient Greece, it is likely that this question may never be answered to satisfaction. However, what historical data we do have allows us to synthesize a composite character of who Homer might have been and, more importantly, what he represented. As we will explore, records reveal that the mythology of ancient Greece arose from the lower rungs of the social ladder; storytellers were often members of …

Board Chairman Recuperating
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Stephen D. Ricks, chairman of the F.A.R.M.S. board of directors, is recovering nicely after undergoing brain surgery in Vienna to remove blood clots that had caused a stroke. The clots apparently originated in some deep bruising in his shoulder he received in a car accident. We appreciate the many expressions of concern and the prayer and fasting in Stephen's behalf, and we join with you in seeking the Lord's blessings for a complete and speedy recovery

Time Warner has just published a beautiful book of photographs that gives the world a glimpse into the lives and beliefs of Latter-day Saints. The Mission contains the work of fifty world-class photographers who traveled extensively around the world in the course of a year, documenting the people, history, culture, rituals, and beliefs of the global Church. It was produced with considerable cooperation from the Church and includes a preface written by President Gordon B. Hinckley. It is remarkably accurate for a work by outsiders and its tone is sympathetic to the beliefs and life-styles of members, reflecting no doubt …
Brown Bags Continue
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Rocks, radar, and writers--these have been the topics of the most recent presentations at the FARMS brown bag seminar at BYU. John L. Sorenson, professor emeritus of Anthropology at BYU, spoke about writers, or more accurately, about the authorship of the Book of Mormon. He pointed out that Joseph Smith apparently thought that the Book of Mormon applied to all of North and South America, yet the book fits only a limited Mesoamerican setting. If Joseph had made up the setting or used what he knew about the world, it would not have matched so well a part of the …
Pop Gugak And E-Sang: Negotiating Traditional And Pop Genre Categories In Expressions Of Identity, Jessica Ellis
Pop Gugak And E-Sang: Negotiating Traditional And Pop Genre Categories In Expressions Of Identity, Jessica Ellis
Theses and Dissertations
Korean traditional music has a popularity problem among Korea's contemporary audiences; given the choice of what to listen to, few South Koreans choose to listen to gugak. To address and overcome this popularity problem, traditional Korean musicians are negotiating and reconstructing traditional Korean music by adopting, appropriating, and altering elements of Korean and international pop music. To this end, Gugak groups recently have been incorporating western musical practices and aesthetics in their performances in digital platforms (YouTube and reality television programs) and in concerts to contemporize the genre and develop a more positive relationship between Koreans and their national music. …

Language Shifts Provide Evidence
Language Shifts Provide Evidence
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In a recently published article, "Dating the Book of Mormon to Pre-exilic Language Structure," Angela M. Crowell reports her findings from a study of language patterns. Crowell bases her findings on recent research about Classical Biblical Hebrew and Late Biblical Hebrew, the languages of Judah before and after the Babylonian exile in 586 B.C. Scholars have identified the books of Samuel and Kings as classic examples of preexilic writing. Because much of the same historical account is given in postexilic Chronicles, they can observe the change in language patterns and terminology that took place during the exile.

Brown Bags Shine Light On Nephite Culture And History
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
On 27 September, Professor Ninian Smart, an internationally recognized scholar of comparative religion and philosophy of religion from the University of California, Santa Barbara, visited Utah Valley to give a keynote address at a conference held at a nearby college. During his visit, Professor Smart met with FARMS Brown Bag attendees to discuss his experiences in the field of religious studies. He pointed out that it is increasingly a multidisciplinary field that makes greater demands on those who study it. In particular he discussed the need for scholars in religious studies to gain an empathetic perspective on the subject they …

Brown Bag Lectures Continue To Inform
Brown Bag Lectures Continue To Inform
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Two outstanding Brown Bag lectures were presented in February. Louis C. Midgley, professor of Political Science at BYU, discussed "The Authorship Debate: Who Really Wrote the Book of Mormon?" This lecture was based on a paper Midgley has submitted for publication in a new FARMS collection of essays on the authorship issue. Midgley gave a history of attempts to dismiss Joseph Smith's explanation for the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. In his paper, Midgley writes: "Those who fashion ... naturalistic explanations [of the Book of Mormon's origin] are faced with, among other challenges, the task of uncovering in …

Research Committee Reports
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
FARMS is organized around research committees who largely determine the Foundation's program . The first fully-staffed committee is the twelve person panel on Book of Mormon-New World, chaired by John Sorenson. Its duties include evaluating research projects for technical adequacy, noting approaches or topics which might be fruitfully pursued, reporting on relevant research presented at professional meetings, responding to inquiries in their area of expertise, and otherwise serving as a panel of helpful scholarly resources . An evaluative and scholarly arm, not an administrative entity, the group's members vary in degree of involvement according to the time they feel they …

The uncollected papers of Hugh Nibley, which he has given to FARMS, include a mouthwatering assortment of his work for the past twenty years. No decision has yet been made whether to prepare a comprehensive book or to offer them in a separate series of FARMS reprints. They include his 1968-69 series from The Improvement Era on the Book of Abraham, his 1975-76 series for The Ensign on Enoch, multi-part articles on baptism for the dead, "The Stick of Judah and the Stick of Joseph," a study of Book of Mormon criticism, some of his classical studies on the ancient …
