An Ancient American Setting For The Book Of Mormon

As this newsletter goes to press, John Sorenson 's book, An Ancient American Setting for the Book of Mormon is in publication at Deseret Book Company. This landmark volume should be out the beginning of next year. This book has been long-awaited; it sets a new benchmark for Book of Mormon studies. Dr. Sorenson, Chairman of the Anthropology Department at Brigham Young University, has been working on these materials for thirty-five years. He has developed much of this research in connection with several innovative classes he has been teaching at BYU.

A convenient and commendable collection of articles about Book of Mormon people is now off the press. It Begins with a Family, published in January by Deseret Book, reprints twenty-three articles that appeared in the Ensign from 1976 to 1978. The articles, by prominent authors and scholars, discuss the lives and characters of Lehi, Nephi, Jacob, Benjamin, Alma, Ammon, Korihor, Moroni, and other significant Book of Mormon figures.

May 11 of this year would have been the one-hundredth birthday of Violaine Idelette Junod, a remarkable if not well-known member of a celebrated Swiss missionary family. Born and raised in Africa, Violaine was nonetheless imbued with a thoroughly European worldview. To truly confront the realities of modern Africa, Junod would have to experience, through a long career as a social activist and educator, the harsh legacies of colonialism, poverty, and civil unrest across the continent of her birth. A mammoth task is now underway: with added emphasis on Book of Mormon scholarship the past few years, it has become necessary to improve, update, and annotate the 1986 F.A.R.M.S. Bibliography of the Book of Mormon. Donald W. Parry, who will oversee this project, notes that during the past five years, several hundred students and scholars have realized the usefulness of this bibliography.

Fourth Annual Book Of Mormon Lecture Slated

The fourth annual F.A.R.M.S. Book of Mormon lecture will be presented by Dr. Allen J. Christenson on February 27. The title of his lecture is "The Mayan Festival of Resurrection and the Book of Mormon." This presentation will be based on years of research into contemporary and ancient Highland Mayan religious festivals. Dr. Christenson will trace these festivals through time, examine their symbolic treatments of the tree of life and of the conflict between death and the underworld, and note Book of Mormon parallels. He will illustrate his presentation with numerous slides.

The annual F.A.R.M.S. banquet, to be held at BYU on Saturday, October 17, will feature an address by Hugh Nibley. Brother Nibley will speak about some of his current research. The program will also include recognition of individuals who have given outstanding service to the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies and to the Book of Mormon research it sponsors. Members of the F.A.R.M.S. board of directors will report on on-going projects and work that has been completed during the last year and will present plans for future projects and activities.

Farms-Sponsored Team Will Examine Arabian Site

A team of researchers, sponsored jointly by BYU and F.A.R.M.S., will examine a likely site for Old World Bountiful, where Nephi's family built the boat that carried them to their promised land. Over the last few years, Warren and Michaela Aston have surveyed the coast of southern Arabia for possible sites for Bountiful. Their research has identified a site at Wadi Sayq as the most likely candidate, matching in great detail the criteria that the Astons have identified from the account in the Book of Mormon.
