Problems? What Problems? We Have None At All: Qualitative Data Collection For Impact Assessment, Katie Wright Apr 2003

Problems? What Problems? We Have None At All: Qualitative Data Collection For Impact Assessment, Katie Wright

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Increasing interest in impact assessment of microfinance and other development interventions highlights the need to understand links between activities and outcomes in order that programs and services can be improved. This paper draws out the complexities of using prompting and open-ended questions in semistructured interviews and also considers entry points for field research. This is done with reference to a study of the impact of microfinance on women in poor areas of Cajamarca, Peru. Drawing on findings from over eighteen months of fieldwork, it examines the trials and pitfalls in question design and suggests guidelines for better practice.

To Be Or Not To Be Ideophonically Impoverished, Janis B. Nuckolls Apr 2003

To Be Or Not To Be Ideophonically Impoverished, Janis B. Nuckolls

Faculty Publications

This paper addresses a current debate over the universality of ideophones, a class of expressions that are used to simulate, through performative foregrounding, the salient processes and perceptions of everyday life experience. Using data from Quechua-speaking Runa in Amazonian Ecuador, I argue for a view of ideophones as a type of cultural discourse through which speakers align themselves with nonhuman life forms and forces of nature. This alignment is suggested by the special performative properties of ideophones, which collapse the distinction between a speech event and a narrated event, thus compelling a speaker to become an action, event, or process, …

A Few Thoughts From A Believing Dna Scientist, John M. Butler Jan 2003

A Few Thoughts From A Believing Dna Scientist, John M. Butler

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The Book of Mormon does not give sufficient information about the background of Ishmael’s wife, the wives of Ishmael’s sons, and Nephi’s sisters to test the mitochondrial DNA of the group. Other problems for critics’ assertions include the uncertainty of Lehi’s possession of an Abrahamic Y chromosome and the complete disregard for the entire Jaredite population (remnants of which may have survived their final battle). Confident scientific conclusions are difficult to attain and cannot replace a spiritual witness of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon.

Who Are The Children Of Lehi?, D. Jeffrey Meldrum, Trent D. Stephens Jan 2003

Who Are The Children Of Lehi?, D. Jeffrey Meldrum, Trent D. Stephens

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

By covenanting with Abraham, God promised him that through his seed all the families of the earth would be blessed—his seed would be as leaven within bread. This metaphor can likewise be applied to the children of Lehi, who introduced the Abrahamic covenant to the much larger indigenous Mesoamerican population. The larger gene pool with which the children of Lehi assimilated makes it very likely that no genetic evidence will ever substantiate an American–Middle Eastern link, although Native American populations show a strong affinity with Asian populations. The assumption that all modern-day Native Americans are descended exclusively from Book of …

Dna And The Book Of Mormon: A Phylogenetic Perspective, Michael F. Whiting Jan 2003

Dna And The Book Of Mormon: A Phylogenetic Perspective, Michael F. Whiting

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

This paper debunks the myth that the Book of Mormon has been proved false by modern DNA evidence. Critics have tried to apply American Indian DNA-based research to the Book of Mormon without designing a study specifically for that purpose. It is extraordinarily difficult to use DNA sequence information to track the lineage of any group with such a complex lineage history as the Nephites and Lamanites. Possible hypotheses about the populations from the Book of Mormon include the global colonization hypothesis (in which the three colonizing groups came to a land void of humans) and the local colonization hypothesis …

God As Androgyne: Jane Lead’S Rewriting Of The Destiny Of Nature, Sylvia Bowerbank Jan 2003

God As Androgyne: Jane Lead’S Rewriting Of The Destiny Of Nature, Sylvia Bowerbank

Quidditas

Jane Lead [or Leade] (1624–1704) was one of the few seventeenth-century Englishwomen bold and radical enough to engage in "God-talk"—to used Rosemary Ruether's term. When the power of the English king and church was restored in 1660, radical millenarians were repressed and had to face that the English revolution—“God’s cause”— had failed politically, at least temporarily. In her recuperation of God’s cause, Lead argued that the revolution, properly understood, would be “intrinsical.” In her prophecies, Lead unites a radical hermeneutics of Scripture with Jacob Boehme’s concept of God as androgyne in order to reconfigure both God and divine history. According …

Describing Support: A Qualitative Study Of Couples Living With Diabetes, Paula M. Trief, Jonathan G. Sandberg, Roger P. Greenberg, Keri Graff, Nina Castronova, Miyoung Yoon, Ruth S. Weinstock

Faculty Publications

Family and marital support have been shown to be associated with better treatment adherence, illness adaptation, and blood sugar control in studies of individuals with diabetes. However, the behaviors and attitudes that describe appropriate support have not been defined. This is a qualitative study which asked couples who live with diabetes to define support. Seventy-four individuals (patients and spouses) participated in semi-structured interviews. Transcripts of these interviews were rigorously coded and analyzed by a team of researchers. A sampling of quotes is provided. Helpful behavior was particularly evident in the areas of dietary control and regimen specific support, general relational …

The Cultural Impact Of Mormon Missionaries On Taiwan, Richard B. Stamps Oct 2002

The Cultural Impact Of Mormon Missionaries On Taiwan, Richard B. Stamps

BYU Studies

I grew up in a multi-ethnic neighborhood in the San Francisco Bay Area, so from a very early age I was aware of China and things Chinese. In 1961 at Modesto Junior College, I met two international students from Hong Kong and was fascinated by their culture. When I heard a young man from our stake speak about his mission in Hong Kong, I said to myself, "That's where I would like to go!" When I applied for a mission, I was interviewed by a General Authority, who asked, "Would you be willing to serve overseas and learn a foreign …

Ashrai: A Savings-Led Model For Fighting Poverty And Discrimination, Brett Matthews, Ahsan Ali [email protected] Sep 2002

Ashrai: A Savings-Led Model For Fighting Poverty And Discrimination, Brett Matthews, Ahsan Ali [email protected]

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Ashrai is getting results with a savings-led model among minority peoples in northwest Bangladesh. These people are mostly landless and illiterate, and earn about $50 a year per person. They are a vital population segment that microfinance institutions in Bangladesh and elsewhere are unable to serve successfully. Ashrai began its field work ten years ago by replicating Grameen Bank, but rapidly learned from its clients that they needed savings at least at much as loans, flexible loan repayment schedules structured around seasonal cash flow, and an easing of the requirement that loans be for productive purposes. Ashrai takes an innovative …
