The Pueblitos Of Palluche Canyon: An Examination Of The Ethnic Affiliation Of The Pueblito Inhabitants And Results Of Archaeological Survey At La 9073, La 10732 And La 86895, New Mexico, Leslie-Lynne Sinkey Mar 2004

The Pueblitos Of Palluche Canyon: An Examination Of The Ethnic Affiliation Of The Pueblito Inhabitants And Results Of Archaeological Survey At La 9073, La 10732 And La 86895, New Mexico, Leslie-Lynne Sinkey

Theses and Dissertations

The small, above-ground masonry structures of northwestern New Mexico called "pueblitos" first came to the attention of anthropologists in over a century ago. In 1920, the noted archaeologist A.V. Kidder hypothesized that these masonry structures might have been built by Puebloan refugees fleeing Spanish reprisals in the wake of the Spanish reconquest of New Mexico after the Pueblo Revolt, and he proposed that this hypothesis be tested. Over the next several decades, however, the hypothesis remained untested, but it became both accepted as established fact and the basis for most anthropological, archaeological, and historical reconstructions of Navajo history and cultural …

Biogeographic And Conservation Implications Of Late Quaternary Pygmy Rabbits (Brachylagus Idahoensis) In Eastern Washington, R. Lee Lyman Feb 2004

Biogeographic And Conservation Implications Of Late Quaternary Pygmy Rabbits (Brachylagus Idahoensis) In Eastern Washington, R. Lee Lyman

Western North American Naturalist

Five implications of a biogeographic model of pygmy rabbits (Brachylagus idahoensis) in eastern Washington proposed in 1991 are confirmed by 11 new late-Quaternary records. Pygmy rabbits from eastern Oregon colonized eastern Washington during the late Pleistocene and occupied their largest range during the middle and late Holocene. Disjunction of the eastern Washington population from that in eastern Oregon occurred during at least the late Holocene. Nineteenth-century cattle grazing and 20th-century agricultural practices reduced habitat preferred by pygmy rabbits. Conservation of the small remaining population of pygmy rabbits will necessitate altered land use practices.

Habitat Of Three Rare Species Of Small Mammals In Juniper Woodlands Of Southwestern Wyoming, Kevin M. Rompola, Stanley H. Anderson Feb 2004

Habitat Of Three Rare Species Of Small Mammals In Juniper Woodlands Of Southwestern Wyoming, Kevin M. Rompola, Stanley H. Anderson

Western North American Naturalist

Southwestern Wyoming constitutes the northern limit of the ranges of the cliff chipmunk (Tamias dorsalis), pinyon mouse (Peromyscus truei), and canyon mouse (P. crinitus). In addition to trying to determine their presence in the region, we wanted to identify habitat characteristics commonly used by each of these species. We used Sherman live-traps to sample 14 sites representing 2 distinct habitat types in 1998 and 1999: juniper-rocky slopes and juniper cliffs. Seventeen habitat characteristics were measured at capture locations for each species and compared with randomly located points. Best subsets multiple logistic regression was used …

Context Of Learning And Second Language Fluency In French: Comparing Regular Classroom, Study Abroad And Intensive Domestic Immersion Programs, Barbara F. Freed, Norman Segalowitz, Dan Dewey Jan 2004

Context Of Learning And Second Language Fluency In French: Comparing Regular Classroom, Study Abroad And Intensive Domestic Immersion Programs, Barbara F. Freed, Norman Segalowitz, Dan Dewey

Faculty Publications

We compared the acquisition of various dimensions of fluency by 28 students of French studying in three different learning contexts: formal language classrooms in an at home (AH) institution, an intensive summer immersion (IM) program, and a study abroad (SA) setting. For the purpose of oral data collection, students participated in oral interviews (similar to the Oral Proficiency Interview) at the beginning and the end of the semester and provided information regarding language use and interactions. Analyses included comparisons of gain scores as a function of the learning context and as a function of the time reported using French outside …

The Diaries Of Mary Lois Walker Morris, Melissa Lambert Milewski Jan 2004

The Diaries Of Mary Lois Walker Morris, Melissa Lambert Milewski

Theses and Dissertations

An edited transcription of the 1879 to 1887 diaries of Mary Lois Walker Morris (1835-1919). Mary Lois, a plural wife in 19th century Utah, went in and out of hiding between 1885 and 1887 to protect her husband Elias Morris from prosecution for illegal cohabitation. Her daily diaries culminate with the court trial of her husband for illegal cohabitation in September 1887. At the trial, she testified falsely, stating that she had been separated from her husband since the beginning of 1883, when in fact the couple did not separate until May of 1885. As a result, her husband was …

Re-Immigration To Denmark: The Challenge Of Reintegration, Jette Mackintosh Jan 2004

Re-Immigration To Denmark: The Challenge Of Reintegration, Jette Mackintosh

The Bridge

Over the years, I have known a lot of happy and contented immigrants to the United States, and this made me wonder what motivated return migration. It was a completely uncharted field, so it was an exciting challenge when, in 1996, I was asked to give a paper on the subject at an international conference in Gothenburg. It has since developed into a full-scale research project and a book.

Byu Marriott School Executive Master Of Business Administration Program Market Research Evaluating Demand For Emba Schedule Variants, Byu Marriott School

Student Works

Executive MBA programs have become an important educational option for both students and universities in recent years. EMBA programs allow students flexible schedules and provide universities with additional sources of revenue. As more and more employers require more educated managers, the demand for EMBA programs will only increase. Executive MBA programs are part-time programs usually offered weekday evenings, weekends, or online. Highly ranked universities across the globe offer EMBA's. The cost of the education varies from program to program and university to university. As more individuals pursue undergraduate education. those holding degrees seek post-graduate education to differentiate themselves and further …

Prehistoric Timberline Adaptations In The Eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, Michelle Knoll Sep 2003

Prehistoric Timberline Adaptations In The Eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, Michelle Knoll

Theses and Dissertations

Excavations at a high altitude archaeological site (3350 m) in the eastern Uinta Mountains, Utah, uncovered at least three ephemeral brush structures. These temporary timberline dwellings are the highest structures excavated in Utah to date. The periods of occupation range from the early Fremont period to the post-contact era. It is believed that the Fremont occupations are logistical in nature, possibly representing male hunting parties. Logistical camps imply a departure from, and return to, a residential camp. Ethnographic studies show that most residential camps are located within proximity to culinary plants to facilitate collection by women. In the Uinta Mountains, …

Plant Community Patterns In Unburned And Burned Blackbrush (Coleogne Ramosissima Torr.) Shrublands In The Mojave Desert, Matthew L. Brooks, John R. Matchett Aug 2003

Plant Community Patterns In Unburned And Burned Blackbrush (Coleogne Ramosissima Torr.) Shrublands In The Mojave Desert, Matthew L. Brooks, John R. Matchett

Western North American Naturalist

The blackbrush vegetation type is dominated by Coleogyne ramossisima, which is thought to preclude the coexistence of many other plant species. Fire can remove blackbrush cover and possibly increase plant species richness and evenness. Fire also may increase the frequency and cover of alien annual grasses, thereby intensifying landscape flammability. We tested these predictions in unburned and burned (6–14 years postfire) blackbrush at 3 sites spanning the range of this vegetation type in the Mojave Desert.

Species richness in unburned blackbrush was similar to published values for vegetation types in western North America, bur richness varied significantly among the …

Irony In The Book Of Mormon, Robert A. Rees Jul 2003

Irony In The Book Of Mormon, Robert A. Rees

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The Book of Mormon appears replete with examples of verbal and dramatic irony, something unlikely to have been produced intentionally by Joseph Smith with his level of rhetorical and expressive skills. Dramatic irony occurs when an exceeding young Nephi, who is large in stature, admires the exquisite sword of Laban and then grapples with the distasteful command to kill Laban with that sword. Having passed the test, Nephi has matured into a man large in stature. Dramatic irony also occurs in Abinadi’s experience with King Noah and in the similar experiences of Alma and Korihor with the power of speech …

Had For Good And Evil: 19th-Century Literary Treatments Of The Book Of Mormon, Richard H. Cracroft Jul 2003

Had For Good And Evil: 19th-Century Literary Treatments Of The Book Of Mormon, Richard H. Cracroft

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Moroni prophesied on 21 September 1823 that Joseph’s name, and by implication the book he would eventually translate and publish, should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues. Many current criticisms of the Book of Mormon trace their roots to the antagonistic critiques by 19th-century authors, beginning with Abner Cole, Alexander Campbell, and E. D. Howe. Campbell in particular was responsible for introducing the environmental theory: that Joseph Smith introduced 19th-century elements into his story. Travelers to Salt Lake City published their exposés, which were mostly critical of the Latter-day Saints and their book of …

Academic Persistence Among Native American College Students, Aaron P. Jackson, Steven A. Smith, Curtis L. Hill

Faculty Publications

Qualitative interviews with 15 successful Native American college students who grew up on reservations identified the following themes related to their persistence in college: (a) family support, (b) structured social support, (c) faculty/staff warmth, (d) exposure to college and vocations, (e) developing independence and assertiveness, (f) reliance on spiritual resources, (g) dealing with racism, (h) nonlinear path, and (i) paradoxical cultural pressure. The results indicated a need for stable mentoring relationships and programmatic support.
