The Travels Abroad Of H. C. Andersen, Don Mowatt Jan 1987

The Travels Abroad Of H. C. Andersen, Don Mowatt

The Bridge

A complete appreciation of Hans Christian Andersen has always been limited to Danish-speaking readers because so much of his private life is most clearly revealed in his letters, diaries, and travel books which remain largely untranslated into English. There is a handful of exceptions, the majority of which are mid-nineteenth century translations from England.

Hiram Page: An Historical And Sociological Analysis Of An Early Mormon Prototype, Bruce G. Stewart Jan 1987

Hiram Page: An Historical And Sociological Analysis Of An Early Mormon Prototype, Bruce G. Stewart

Theses and Dissertations

Recent sociological studies propose a model for understanding early Mormonism in its cultural context. Such models, while experimental, suggest commonalities between Mormonism and contemporary millennial sects. Enthusiastic beginnings, early convert response to American millennialism, the containment of charisma through institutionalization, discomfiture of Mormon millenial expectation, and the process of apostasy within the church provide the parameters of this study.

The life of Hiram Page, an early convert, is used as a foil to this end. Page is prototypal of the original band of followers who were attracted to Joseph Smith. Drawn to Joseph for spiritual comfort, Page and his associates …

John Nock Hinton: The Reconstructed Life Of An English Born Mormon Convert Of Virgin City, Utah, Lenora Atkin Meeks

Theses and Dissertations

John Nock Hinton, an Englishman, was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England in 1856. The motivating factor in his life, thereafter, was his strong conviction that the Church was the literal kingdom of God on the earth, and its leaders were God's prophets, and its mission was to usher in the last dispensation on the earth, the Millennium, and the second coming of the Savior. His duty, as he saw it, was to labor unceasingly to help accomplish that mission, to work out his own salvation, and to teach his children the …

Godfrey Goodman And The Language Of Adam, Thomas S. Willard Jan 1987

Godfrey Goodman And The Language Of Adam, Thomas S. Willard

Quidditas

Reformers in seventeenth-century England often spoke of a language of nature, sometimes referred to as the language of Adam. By this, they did not refer to what we would call a natural language, like English or French, but to a univocal language where words and things corresponded perfectly. They insisted that it need not be a dream; it could be made a reality if students would only turn form syllogisms to nature itself. With this insistence, Francis Bacon and others created the false impression that language theory in their time was essentially Adamic, committed to the view that all languages …

The Circleville Massacre: A Brutal Incident In Utah's Black Hawk War, Albert Winkler Jan 1987

The Circleville Massacre: A Brutal Incident In Utah's Black Hawk War, Albert Winkler

Faculty Publications

The Ute Indians of Utah rebelled against the white settlers of Utah, and war broke out in 1865. The Ute Indians showed skill at war, and they staged an attack on Circleville that killed four people. The white settlers became suspicious of the nearby Piute Indians and arrested them. The Indians attempted to escape and were shot down. The white settlers feared that the nearby Indians would retaliate, so they killed the women and children. Three or four small children were spared to be raised by white families.

An Examination Of The Mormon Settlement Of Syracuse, Utah, J. Kent Tucker Jan 1987

An Examination Of The Mormon Settlement Of Syracuse, Utah, J. Kent Tucker

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly referred to as the "Mormon" church, has been well researched, yet little has been written about individual community histories. This work centers on the small Mormon community of Syracuse, Utah, located about twenty-five miles north of Salt Lake City on the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake. From its inception in 1877 through 1987, the community of Syracuse continues to be dominated by the Latter-day Saint (Mormon) influence. This thesis examines the development of this LDS Church settlement, giving emphasis to the early history of the area, …

Children Of Danish Roots, L.C. Laursen

The Bridge

Children of Danish Roots is a translation by Willard R. Garred of Stammens B0rn, an article that appeared originally in the 1931 issue of the "Ryslinge Julebog," a Christmas magazine of the Ryslinge Folk High School, Ryslinge, Denmark. The article was written by L. C. Laursen when he lived in the western Nebraska community at Mirage Flats near Hay Springs. After his arrival in the community he named it Ryslinge, a name generally accepted by the settlers and their friends.

A Reclassification Of The Genera Of Scolytidae (Coleoptera), Stephen L. Wood Dec 1986

A Reclassification Of The Genera Of Scolytidae (Coleoptera), Stephen L. Wood

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

A taxonomic revision of the genera of Scolytidae (Coleoptera) in the world fauna is presented. Included are 215 valid genera and 273 invalid generic and subgeneric names. The type-species for each genus-group name was examined, including the type-specimen of the type-species in those taxa where a holotype, lectotype, or neotype has been designated—with the exception of four contemporary genera, the type-series of which are lost, and six fossil genera for which no effort was made to locate the types. Taxonomic keys to the families of the Curculionoidea, and to the subfamilies, tribes, and genera of Scolytidae are presented. Descriptions and …

John C. Freemont's Expeditions Into Utah: An Historical Analysis Of The Explorer's Contributions And Significance To The Region, Alexander L. Baugh

Theses and Dissertations

John Charles Fremont conducted five expeditions to the West during a period of twelve years (1842-1854). On four occasions, during three of these expeditions (1843-1844, 1845, and 1854), the explorer entered the Utah region. His explorations in northern Utah in 1843 focused primarily on the scientific analysis and survey of the Great Salt Lake. In 1844, Fremont again entered the Utah area and made scientific observations and calculations about the region, including accurately defining the geographic region known as the Great Basin, the name given it by Fremont. In 1845, Fremont proceeded through Utah while enroute to California and spent …

The discovery of America by Europeans opened a new field of interest for numerous European artists occupying themselves with the new continent and its native population. Some even set out with pencil and paint brush to portray on the spot that queer and picturesque world, not the least outstanding of them being Swiss.

Composition And Abundance Of Periphyton And Aquatic Insects In A Sierra Nevada, California, Stream, Harry V. Leland, Steven V. Fend, James L. Carter, Albert D. Mahood Oct 1986

Composition And Abundance Of Periphyton And Aquatic Insects In A Sierra Nevada, California, Stream, Harry V. Leland, Steven V. Fend, James L. Carter, Albert D. Mahood

Great Basin Naturalist

The species composition of periphyton and benthic insect communities and abundances of common taxa (>0.1% of individuals) were examined during snow-free months in Convict Creek, a permanent snowmelt- and spring-fed stream in the Sierra Nevada of California. The communities were highly diverse. The most abundant taxa in the periphyton were diatoms (Achnanthes minutissima, Cocconeis placentula lineata, Cymbella microcephala, C. sinuata, Fragilaria construens, F. crotonensis , Navicula spp., Synedra acus, and S. rumpens), except in late spring and summer when several seasonal blue-green algae (Chamaesiphon incrustans, Lyngbya spp. and Oscillatoria spp.) are at their maximum densities. …

Initial Survey Of Acetylene Reduction And Selected Microorganisms In The Feces Of 19 Species Of Mammals, C. Y. Li, Chris Maser, Harlan Fay

Great Basin Naturalist

Nitrogen-fixing bacteria, as demonstrated by the acetylene reduction method; yeasts, and actinomycetes were found in feces of mammals collected from St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, to the North Carolina-Tennessee border. The mammals, representing four orders and 19 species, occupy a wide variety of habitats and may play an important role in dispersing microorganisms vital to the ecosystem.

Biogeographic Aspects Of Leeches, Mollusks, And Amphibians In The Intermountain Region, Peter Hovingh Oct 1986

Biogeographic Aspects Of Leeches, Mollusks, And Amphibians In The Intermountain Region, Peter Hovingh

Great Basin Naturalist

Some biogeographical and paleobiological aspects of leeches, mollusks, and amphibians in the Intermountain Region are reviewed. Areas of eastern Nevada and western Bonneville Basin as well as the tristate region of Nevada, Utah, and Idaho are poorly inventoried with respect to many aquatic-dependent animals. Observations of Batracobdella picta in the Wasatch Mountains and Erpobdella punctata in Tule Valley in the Bonneville Basin extends the western ranges of these leeches in the Great Basin. Life history and size of leeches varies among the study sites in the northern hemisphere. Aquatic mollusk species have diminished greatly in both prehistoric and historic times, …
