Hitting Dick, Laura Hamblin Jan 1988

Hitting Dick, Laura Hamblin

Inscape

I could say that I run because it makes me feel good, or that I run to lose weight and to look better. I could even tell you that when I run I get more oxygen to my brain and that consequently I am more mentally alert, or that I run because John doesn't. But when I am completely honest with myself, I have to admit that I run to stay ahead of time.

Oxford Street, Brian Kubarycz

Inscape

One Saturday they took the bus up to Oxford Street again. They had been avoiding it for two weeks. Marva saw a stop she liked and just climbed out. She headed through the snow leaving footprints for Benny to follow. She knew he would eventually catch up.

Natural Law And Chaucer's Physician's Tale, Jay Ruud Jan 1988

Natural Law And Chaucer's Physician's Tale, Jay Ruud

Quidditas

Of all the Canterbury Tales, the Physician's Tale may well be the least appreciated. Its subject matter is distasteful in itself–a despicable judge abuses his position of public trust and authority by deliberately setting out to obtain an innocent young virgin as an object of lust, while too frustrate the even the victim's father beheads her after cold-blooded premeditation. But if that were not enough, the tale contains at least two apparently incongruous digressions, and the storyteller appends a moral that must make the reader suspect the Narrator has not been listening to his own story. Perhaps a modern …

Mary Bardenfleth - "I Remember", Caroline Olsen, Translator

The Bridge

These are some memories of a woman whose life spanned a whole century, from 1886 to 1986. As a Danish immigrant in Minneapolis, she saw the changes in the Danish community from the time when the newcomers clung to their heritage, until today, two or three generations later when almost no one speaks in the mother tongue. Her special gift for story telling, her acting ability, and her amazing memory of poetry made her a very unusual, lovable person. Her outgoing personality and friendliness touched the lives of countless people.

Psychology Among The Saints: The Development Of Behavioral Science At Brigham Young University, Bruce L. Brown, Mark K. Allen Jan 1988

Psychology Among The Saints: The Development Of Behavioral Science At Brigham Young University, Bruce L. Brown, Mark K. Allen

Faculty Publications

There was a strong interest in psychology at Brigham Young University at the turn of the century; the third president was a psychologist and a number of distinguished psychologists regularly visited the campus. An outstanding young scholar who was destined to become the only Mormon president of the American Psychological Association started a vigorous academic psychology program in those early years, but he left the university because of a controversy over his teachings. Psychology at Brigham Young University developed little from that time until the 1940s. The 1950s were a time of rapid growth and development, expansion of the faculty, …

County-Level Land Use Planning Policies And Regulations Impacting The Pattern Of Settlement In Utah County, Utah, Erik A. Johnson Jan 1988

County-Level Land Use Planning Policies And Regulations Impacting The Pattern Of Settlement In Utah County, Utah, Erik A. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Utah County has the second largest county population in the State of Utah and ranks 16th out of 29 in total land area. Over 90% of the County's quarter of a million residents live in the area known as Utah Valley, a relatively narrow strip of land situated between the Wasatch Mountains and Utah Lake. In addition to a large population, most of which was realized during the 1970s, Utah Valley also contains the bulk of the County's important agricultural land. Not surprisingly, the expanding population in Utah Valley has created competition between agricultural and urban uses for limited land …

The First London Mormons: 1840-1845: "What Am I And My Brethren Here For?", Lynne Watkins Jorgensen Jan 1988

The First London Mormons: 1840-1845: "What Am I And My Brethren Here For?", Lynne Watkins Jorgensen

Theses and Dissertations

Historians have determined that the visit to London by the early missionary-apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was the greatest disappointment of their proselyting careers. This thesis shows that, though the mission to London was not numerically successful considering the potential conversion, it appealed to the dynamic, energetic, "middling-class" religious seeker who was produced by the strong nonconformist movement indigenous to London. A specific nonconformist group is identified as responding to the preaching of the early apostles. This thesis demonstrates that those few converts kept the Church alive in London during difficult years. It also shows …

A Document Of Humanist Education: Erasmus's Commentary On The Disticha Catonis, Louis A. Perraud Jan 1988

A Document Of Humanist Education: Erasmus's Commentary On The Disticha Catonis, Louis A. Perraud

Quidditas

The part the Disticha (or Dicta) Catonis played in Erasmus's caareer is only one event in the work's long and honorable history. The Cato was composed by an anonymous author during the later Roman principate. As presented in the oldest manuscripts, the work consists of prose sententiae followed by fouor books of hexameter couplets. The whole is ornamented with a prose preface, and the second, third, and fourth books of hexameters have verse prologues of ten, four, and four lines respectively. The "Cato" to whom the work is attributed is probably either that redoubtable critic of Roman morals, Cato …

Study Of The Pioneers Of Providence, Utah And Their Children, Hazel Mclean Tibbitts Jan 1988

Study Of The Pioneers Of Providence, Utah And Their Children, Hazel Mclean Tibbitts

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis poses a number of questions about the pioneers and their decendants: Where did the pioneer settlers of Providence come from? What skills and resources did they bring with them to "tame" the wilderness? Did they come as family units or as single men? What happened as the community grew and the resources were limited? Where did the settlers go or what did they do as the land became scarce? Was limited land the reason for the movement out of the community or were there other considerations? What effects did emigration have on the family ties of the second …

Aspects Of Bald Eagle Winter Behavior In Rush Valley Utah: A Telemetry Study, Neil B. Sabine Dec 1987

Aspects Of Bald Eagle Winter Behavior In Rush Valley Utah: A Telemetry Study, Neil B. Sabine

Theses and Dissertations

The diurnal behavior and nocturnal roosting patterns of 28 bald eagles outfitted with tail-mounted radios were investigated in Rush Valley, Utah between January and March 1982-1984. Casting analysis and feeding observations indicated the principal food source was jackrabbit carrion. Jackrabbit availability declined from 1982 to 1984 and eagles responded by; 1) roosting closer to feeding sites, 2) shifting from canyon to valley roosts, 3) arriving later at and departing earlier from roosts, 4) decreasing diurnal activity, and 5) decreasing residence time. Foraging efficiency appeared to be maximized by experienced eagles using familiar feeding areas and by naive birds monitoring their …

Winter Habitat-Use Pattern Of Elk, Mule Deer, And Moose In Southwestern Wyoming, Olin O. Oedekoven, Fredrick G. Lindzey Oct 1987

Winter Habitat-Use Pattern Of Elk, Mule Deer, And Moose In Southwestern Wyoming, Olin O. Oedekoven, Fredrick G. Lindzey

Great Basin Naturalist

Habitat-use patterns of mule deer, elk, and moose were determined on two winter range near Kemmerer, Wyoming. Mule deer used areas with the least snow depth and dominated by sagebrush. Elk were located more often than expected on wind-swept hills but used sagebrush communities more frequently as snow depths increased. Moose were generally found associated with broad, riparian zones. All three species occasionally used the same area but differed in their use of specific vegetation types and topography.

Genetic Variation And Population Structure In The Cliff Chipmunk, Eutamias Dorsalis, In The Great Basin Of Western Utah, Martin L. Dobson, Clyde L. Pritchett, Jack W. Sites Jr. Oct 1987

Genetic Variation And Population Structure In The Cliff Chipmunk, Eutamias Dorsalis, In The Great Basin Of Western Utah, Martin L. Dobson, Clyde L. Pritchett, Jack W. Sites Jr.

Great Basin Naturalist

Allelic variation at 21 of 39 electrophoretically resolved enzyme loci was used to examine patterns of geographic differentiation and population structure in six allopatric samples of Eutamias dorsalis. Coefficients of genetic similarity for paired combinations of E. dorsalis samples ranged from 0.955 to 0.975, except for one population that was 0.900. Conservative genic divergence among five populations is proposed to be the result of relatively recent isolation events. High positive F18 values and chi-square analyses confirm a significant excess of homozygotes at several loci at the five localities for which sample sizes were statistically adequate. This may be …

Thermal Tolerances And Preferences Of Fishes Of The Virgin River System (Utah, Arizona, Nevada), James E. Deacon, Paul B. Schumann, Edward L. Stuenkel Oct 1987

Thermal Tolerances And Preferences Of Fishes Of The Virgin River System (Utah, Arizona, Nevada), James E. Deacon, Paul B. Schumann, Edward L. Stuenkel

Great Basin Naturalist

Critical thermal maxima (CTM) and thermal preferenda of the common fishes of the Virgin River were examined. Differences in final temperature preferenda and CTM for species with low thermal lability (speckled dace, spinedace, roundtail chub) correspond well with differences in their distribution and abundance in the river. These species shifted their acute thermal preferences relatively little as acclimation temperature increased. For thermally labile species (woundfin, red shiner, desert sucker, and flannelmouth sucker), the final preferendum is a less precise indicator of probably distribution. The woundfin, an endangered fish, has a high CTM (39.5 C at 25 C acclimation) and a …

New Brachiosaur Material From The Late Jurassic Of Utah And Colorado, James A. Jensen Oct 1987

New Brachiosaur Material From The Late Jurassic Of Utah And Colorado, James A. Jensen

Great Basin Naturalist

Little is known about the Brachiosauridae, which includes some of the largest known sauropods, such as the genus Brachiosaurus, discovered in western Colorado by Elmer S. Riggs in 1900. Additional diagnostic material, previously unknown in the western hemisphere, is reported from three comparatively recent quarries: the Jensen/Jensen Quarry in eastern Utah and the Dry Mesa and Potter Creek quarries on the Uncompahgre Upwarp in western Colorado. An unknown, well-preserved, articulated sauropod atlas/axis, seven cervical vertebrae, and an interesting flora were associated with the Potter Creek Quarry brachiosaur material. Taphonomic factors in that quarry are noted. The Jensen/Jensen and Dry …

Small-Stone Content Of Mima Mounds Of The Columbia Plateau And Rocky Mountain Regions: Implications For Mound Origin, George W. Cox, Christopher G. Gakahu, Douglas W. Allen Oct 1987

Small-Stone Content Of Mima Mounds Of The Columbia Plateau And Rocky Mountain Regions: Implications For Mound Origin, George W. Cox, Christopher G. Gakahu, Douglas W. Allen

Great Basin Naturalist

Mima moundfields were investigated at the Lawrence Memorial Grassland Preserve, located on the Columbia Plateau in southern Wasco County, Oregon, and at three locations in the San Luis Valley and Sangre de Cristo Mountains, southern Colorado, to test the alternative hypotheses of mound origins by erosion, frost action, and soil translocation by geomyid pocket gophers. The concentrations of two size classes of small stones, gravel (8–15 mm diameter) and pebbles (15–50 mm diameter), were sampled along mound-to-intermound transects and at different depths within the mounds. Numbers and masses of small stones per unit soil volume increased from intermounds to mounds …
