A Plasma Protein Marker For Population Genetic Studies Of The Desert Tortoise (Xerobates Agassizi), James L. Glenn, Richard C. Straight, Jack W. Sites Jr. Mar 1990

A Plasma Protein Marker For Population Genetic Studies Of The Desert Tortoise (Xerobates Agassizi), James L. Glenn, Richard C. Straight, Jack W. Sites Jr.

Great Basin Naturalist

Fifty-seven individual plasma samples from desert tortoises (Xerobates agassizi) representing 10 separate populations were analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis using alkaline buffers. An albumin-like protein was found to be polymorphic for two electromorphs in northern populations inhabiting the Mohave Desert Province while Sonoran Desert populations to the south were monomorphic. The genetic divergence demonstrated in this survey is similar to earlier studies and provides evidence for the Colorado River as a potential barrier to gene flow among tortoise populations. These data suggest that tortoise plasma, examined by various electrophoretic methods, may provide a nondestructive means of determining the …

Narrative Description In Marco Polo's Travels: A Nonfictional Application Of Bakhtin's Chronotope, Ute Margarete Saine

Quidditas

Throughout the text of Marco Polo's Devisement du monde, the reader is repeatedly enjoined to believe the narration. Such a captatio benevolantiae – the rhetorical convention inviting reader interest – typically takes the form of assertions, such as "I am telling nothing but the truth"; "Everybody ought too believe this"; "This is how it was"; "This is how Marco Polo saw it," and the like. The narrator even proposes to uphold the sophisticated distinction between eyewitness information, gathered firsthand, and accounts obtained from others:

We will set down things seen as seen, things heard as heard, so that our …

Symbolic Action And Persuasion In The Book Of Mormon, Keith H. Lane Jan 1990

Symbolic Action And Persuasion In The Book Of Mormon, Keith H. Lane

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis contends that the Book of Mormon can be profitably read from a rhetorical perspective. It employs Kenneth Burke's ideas concerning language, texts, and his method of dramatistic analysis, to reveal certain persuasive aspects of the Book of Mormon, and to urge action in response to the persuasion of the Book of Mormon.

Chapter one discusses common ways of reading scripture, and explains some of the inadequacies of these approaches. It gives a rationale of a rhetorical approach that concerns itself with action, and recommends this approach for the Book of Mormon. Chapter two applies a rhetorical reading to …

The Geography Of Book Of Mormon Events: A Sourcebook, John L. Sorenson Jan 1990

The Geography Of Book Of Mormon Events: A Sourcebook, John L. Sorenson

Maxwell Institute Publications

Introduction

The subject of "Book of Mormon geography" has stimulated three different responses among Latter-day Saints over the years. On the part of Church authorities caution, if not anxiety, has prevailed. For a minority of members the reaction has been persistent curiosity. Meanwhile a large majority have been satisfied to ignore the matter.

The Burden Of Responsibility In The Libro De Buen Amor, Lynn Williams Jan 1990

The Burden Of Responsibility In The Libro De Buen Amor, Lynn Williams

Faculty Publications

In three of the early sections of the Libro de buen amor, Juan Ruiz explains to his public how, for various reasons, he is conditioned to love women. In stanzas 71-76 he uses the unimpeachable authority of Aristotle to argue that men and animals are biologically determined to seek 'juntamiento con fenbra plazentera' (st. 71d), and since he is a man like any other, it is natural, perhaps even inevitable, that from time to time he too should feel the attraction of the opposite sex. Paraphrasing St Paul (I Thessalonians 5.21), the Archpriest tells us rather cheekily that one must …

He Sowed So That Others Could Reap: Niels Ebbesen Hansen 1866 -1950, J. Christian Bay

The Bridge

January 4 punctuates two events. On that date in 1851 type-setting began for the printing of a new novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. On the same date in 1866 a boy was born on a farm near Ribe, Denmark, who in baptism in the cathedral was named Niels Ebbesen Hansen. The baptismal vessel used had passed from one generation to the next for over 200 years and had the ring of old Danish silver.

"Official Science Often Lacks Humility": Humor, Science, And Technology In Levi's Storie Naturali, Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications

Primo Levi's third book, written under the pseudonym of "Damiano Malabaila," was published for the first time in the fall of 1966 by Einaudi. Storie naturali is a collection of fifteen short stories which represent the beginning of a new Cours in the author's narrative. After the autobiographical Survival in Auschwitz of 1947 and his second book of 1963 The Reawakening–both dealing with the Holocaust and its aftermath–Storie Naturali ("Natural Stories," not yet published in English) represented such a break in the literary patter established by Levi up to that point, that the author decided to use a …

Universal Writing Systems: Philosophical Languages And Humanist Rhetoric In Seventeenth-Century England, Grant M. Boswell Jan 1990

Universal Writing Systems: Philosophical Languages And Humanist Rhetoric In Seventeenth-Century England, Grant M. Boswell

Quidditas

The early Renaissance, like the Hellenic Age and the Golden Age of Roman literature, was epistemologically oriented to the discursory practices of rhetoric rather than to the rational methods of philosophy. This preference resulted from the widespread adoption of linguistic presuppositions upon which humanist rhetoric is based. By the end of the seventeenth century, however, the underlying principles of humanism had been replaced. The discursory competence that humanism had sought to develop had become devalued, and in its place other epistemological systems had arisen. Francis Bacon, the Royal Society, René Descartes, Isaac Newton, and John Locke all offered epistemological principles …

The Order Of Santo Stefano In The Levant: An Unpublished Account Of A Voyage In 1627, Ilona Klein, Christopher Kleinhenz

Faculty Publications

On 12 April 1627 a fleet of six galleys belonging to the Order of Santo Stefano set sail from Livorno on their expedition "contro il comune nemico"–the Turks. This journey would take them along the western and southern coast of Italy, through the Ionian Sea to the Peloponnese and across the Aegean Sea to the Dardanelles. Along the way the sailors encountered many vessels, both friend and foe, heard reports of sea battles and movements of ships in those waters, and listened to an account of a miracle wrought by the Virgin Mary. After having engaged in two fierce skirmishes …

Transatlantic Connections: Nordic Migration To The New World After 1800, Hans Norman, Harald Runblom, George Nielsen, Reviewer Jan 1990

Transatlantic Connections: Nordic Migration To The New World After 1800, Hans Norman, Harald Runblom, George Nielsen, Reviewer

The Bridge

Transatlantic Encounters is actually two books in one. The first half of the study, written by Hans Norman, describes the conditions in Europe, while the second part, written by Harald Runblom, describes the immigrants in America. Instead of limiting the topic to Scandinavians (Danes, Norwegians, and Swedes), Norman and Runblom identify their subjects as Nordic, in order to include the Finns and Icelanders. Relying heavily on earlier research, and following the usual stages of migration history, the authors have produced a survey of the migration from these five countries to the United States.

On The Structure And Funtion Of White-Tailed Prairie Dog Burrows, James A. Burns, Dennis L. Flath, Tim W. Clark Oct 1989

On The Structure And Funtion Of White-Tailed Prairie Dog Burrows, James A. Burns, Dennis L. Flath, Tim W. Clark

Great Basin Naturalist

The architecture of burrows of the white-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys leucurus) is poorly known. For this reason and for comparative purposes, one recently active burrow of this species was excavated in southern Montana; the detailed methodology is described. Data were compiled on the dimensions of 29.3 m of excavated passages, and interpretations of several features are discussed. A "turning bay," sleeping quarters, two hibernacula, and a maternity area are described, the last feature for the first time in print. In addition, we report Cynomys using their teeth to dig, also for the first time. Further, an inadvertent remodeling …

Diet Similarity Between Elk And Deer In Utah, Kerry J. Mower, H. Duane Smith Oct 1989

Diet Similarity Between Elk And Deer In Utah, Kerry J. Mower, H. Duane Smith

Great Basin Naturalist

Growing numbers of elk (Cervus elaphus) on winter ranges might adversely affect sympatric wintering mule deer (Odoeoileus hemionus) if diets of the two species are similar. Diets of elk and deer on a northern Utah range were analyzed for overlap in winter with microhistological analysis of fecal samples. Diets overlapped 71%. No significant difference was found in use of grasses or shrubs between elk and deer; however, use of forbs was significantly different. Shrubs comprised the largest proportion of the diets of both elk and deer. Deer might be under more severe dietary stress than elk …

Checklist Of Recent Mollusca Of Wyoming, Usa, Dorothy E. Beetle Oct 1989

Checklist Of Recent Mollusca Of Wyoming, Usa, Dorothy E. Beetle

Great Basin Naturalist

Wyoming lacks a rich molluscan fauna due to its considerable elevation, extremes of temperature, the short period between killing frosts, scanty moisture, and intermittent creeks. Recent mollusks found in the state total 42 genera (109 species), including 6 genera (23 species) of bivalves, 15 genera (42 species) of freshwater gastropods, and 21 genera (44 species) of land gastropods. Synonymy, the counties in which each species was collected, and habitat notes are given.

Effect Of Indomethacin-Treated Wheat On A Wild Population Of Montane Voles, Rodney R. Seeley, Timothy D. Reynolds

Great Basin Naturalist

Semiweekly mark and recapture livetrapping was conducted July–October 1985 to determine the effectiveness of wheat treated with inomethacin, a prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor, to control the productivity of a wild population of montane voles (Microtus montanus) in southeastern Idaho. Before treatment, control (C) and experimental (E) groups, each on ca 0.3 ha, were statistically equal in population size (x̄ ± SD; C = 50 ± 21, E = 45 ± 14), adult female: male ratio (C = 1:0.8, E = 1:0.7), juvenile:adult ratio (C =0.16:1, E = 0.13:1), number of juveniles per 100 females (x̄ ± SD; C = …
