“Names, Hypocoristic,” In Anchor Bible Dictionary, Dana M. Pike
“Names, Hypocoristic,” In Anchor Bible Dictionary, Dana M. Pike
Faculty Publications
A hypocoristicon is generally a single-element name resulting from the shortening of an originally longer one. Hebrew names and Semitic names in general, were often composed of two elements (or, as was often the case in Akkadian names and sometimes the case with West Semitic ones, three elements) which formed a nominal or verbal sentence.
Saturday's Women: Female Characters As Angels And Monsters In Saturday's Warrior And Reunion, Nola Diane Smith
Saturday's Women: Female Characters As Angels And Monsters In Saturday's Warrior And Reunion, Nola Diane Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Using theories of feminist criticism as explained by Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar, the study concludes that both Saturday's Warrior, a "home literature" style play, and Reunion, a more artistically challenging play, reflect repressive cultural images of women. Both plays cast female characters into the roles of passive Angel, domestic Angel/Monster, and active Monster.
Moral Lessons For Women Readers Of Jean Lemaire De Belges's Les Illustrations De Gaule Et Singularitez De Troye, Judy Kem
Quidditas
Jean Lemaire de Belges (1473-1525), poet and historiographer of the French and Burgundian courts of the early Renaissance, wrote his epic history of Troy, Les Illustrations de Gaule et singularitez de Troye (1511-1513), at the request of his patron, Margaret of Austria, to offer an "occupation voluptueuse, et non pas inutile" [sensual yet useful occupation] to the ladies of France (1:11). Lemaire dedicated each of the three books of his epic to a different noblewoman. Mercury, who narrates the prologues of all three volumes, identifies each noblewoman with one of the three goddesses of the Judgment of Paris: Margaret of …

The Southern Utah Expedition Of Parley P. Pratt: 1849-1850, Rick J. Fish
The Southern Utah Expedition Of Parley P. Pratt: 1849-1850, Rick J. Fish
Theses and Dissertations
In 1849, President Brigham Young commissioned a fifty man company, headed by Parley P. Pratt, to explore Southern Utah for possible colonization. The four month trek spanned the coldest months of the winter, and afforded some very harrowing and hazardous experiences. These events weave a heroic story filled with excitement and adventure, while simultaneously revealing the tremendous dedication and fortitude on the part of the explorers to successfully complete their mission.
Many of the Southern Utah colonies that were initiated in the subsequent years following the expedition were based on information gathered during this seven-hundred mile expedition. In addition, their …

The Ute Mode Of War In The Conflict Of 1865-1868, Albert Winkler
Faculty Publications
The Ute Indians of Utah rebelled in 1865 which led to war for the next three years. Throughout the conflict, small numbers of Utah warriors showed great skill in raiding white settlements of central Utah and in keeping their enemies at bay.
Holocene Bison From Arches National Park, Southeastern Utah, Jim I. Mead, Saxon E. Sharpe, Larry D. Agenbroad
Holocene Bison From Arches National Park, Southeastern Utah, Jim I. Mead, Saxon E. Sharpe, Larry D. Agenbroad
Great Basin Naturalist
An artifact constructed from a bison (Bison bison) hornsheath was recovered from the surface of a sandstone shelter also containing skeletal remains of bison and bighorn (Ovis Canadensis). Radiocarbon dating of bison, bighorn, and the artifact indicate that all co-occurred on the central Colorado Plateau, southeastern Utah, either between A. D. 1405 and A. D. 1420, or between A. D. 1535 and A. D. 1605. Skeletal remains of the bison imply that the animal was of the local faunal community during the transition between Protohistoric and Historic time.

Fishes Of Bly Tunnel, Lassen County, California, Peter B. Moyle, Thomas Kennedy, Derek Kuda, Laurie Martin
Great Basin Naturalist
Leon Bly Tunnel, which connects Eagle Lake to Willow Creek, was investigated to see if the water issuing from the tunnel was lake water or spring water and to check reports of its being inhabited by fish. We found that the water was similar to that of highly alkaline Eagle Lake, despite a block placed in the tunnel in 1986. Five species of fish were found in the tunnel, the same species inhabiting both Willow Creek and Eagle Lake, although the creek was much warmer and less alkaline than the lake. The fish originated from the creek. Fish in the …
Heavy Metal Tolerance Of Inland Saltgrass (Distichlis Spicata), R. A. Prodgers, W. P. Inskeep
Heavy Metal Tolerance Of Inland Saltgrass (Distichlis Spicata), R. A. Prodgers, W. P. Inskeep
Great Basin Naturalist
Inland saltgrass (Distichlis spicata) occurs on at least two metal-contaminated sites in southwestern Montana. As a result of mining, milling, and smelting activities, soils have elevated concentrations of copper, zinc, and manganese. One soil is acidic (upper horizons), slightly saline, and moderately sodic. The other soil is alkaline, nonsaline, and nonsodic. The fact that inland saltgrass grows on these soils and does not accumulate dangerous levels of metals makes it a candidate species for revegetating hardrock mining and other metal-polluted sites.
Habitat Use And Food Selection Of Small Mammals Near A Sagebrush/Crested Wheatgrass Interface In Southeastern Idaho, David K. Koehler, Stanley H. Anderson
Habitat Use And Food Selection Of Small Mammals Near A Sagebrush/Crested Wheatgrass Interface In Southeastern Idaho, David K. Koehler, Stanley H. Anderson
Great Basin Naturalist
Habitat use and food selection data were collected for deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), montane voles (Microtus montanus), Ord's kangaroo rats (Dipodomys ordii), and Townsend's ground squirrels (Spermophilus townsendii) near a sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata )/crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum) interface in southeastem Idaho. Significantly more captures occurred in the native sagebrush habitat than in areas planted in crested wheatgrass or in disturbed sites. Crested wheatgrass, a prolific seed producer, still accounted for over 30% of the total captures. Montane voles and Townsend's ground squirrels (during periods of aboveground activity) used the …
Habitat Evaluation Procedure For Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep In The Intermountain West, Tom S. Smith, Jerran T. Flinders, David S. Winn
Habitat Evaluation Procedure For Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep In The Intermountain West, Tom S. Smith, Jerran T. Flinders, David S. Winn
Great Basin Naturalist
Several habitat evaluation procedures have been developed for bighorn sheep. However, none of these procedures specifically addresses the Rocky Mountain subspecies nor analyzes both the quantity and quality of potential bighorn habitat with regard to minimum viable population (MVP) criteria. This bighorn habitat evaluation procedure combines (1) a quantitative assessment of bighorn range to determine if there are adequate quantities of resources to support an MVP of bighorn sheep, and (2) a qualitative assessment of a range to predict the probable density of bighorns the range can support. Extensive literature review, intensive bighorn research, and a modeling tool, pattern recognition …

Effects Of Convict Cichlids On Growth And Recruitment Of White River Springfish, Dallas Tippie, James E. Deacon, Chih-Hsiang Ho
Great Basin Naturalist
Observations of changes in population density of native White River springfish (Crenichthys baileyi) in Pahranagat Valley led to the following hypothesis: introduced convict cichlids (Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum) cause reduced growth and recruitment; cover reduces the magnitude of the effect. The hypothesis was tested by establishing sympatric and allopatric groups of the two species in experimental aquaria with and without cover. Change in volume (= mass) and length of the two species over a three-month period in spring 1986 and 1987 was measured and analyzed using 2 × 2 factorial analyses. Convict cichlids caused reduced growth and eliminated …
