Going Cold Turkey? Changes To Faunal Subsistence In The Northern San Juan Region From Basketmaker Ii Through Pueblo Iii, Tenaya Gatrell-Bedard Dec 2022

Going Cold Turkey? Changes To Faunal Subsistence In The Northern San Juan Region From Basketmaker Ii Through Pueblo Iii, Tenaya Gatrell-Bedard

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research in the Northern San Juan Region of the American Southwest has revealed a pattern of change in subsistence patterns from the Basketmaker II through Pueblo III periods. Jonathan C. Driver describes the pattern as: cottontail in Basketmaker III (500 to 750 CE) and Pueblo I (750 to 900 CE), deer in Pueblo II (900 to 1150 CE), and turkey in Pueblo III (1150 to 1350 CE). The transition from deer to turkey as the main subsistence has been recorded at several sites throughout the Northern San Juan Region and is thought to be caused by the overhunting of …

The Influence Of Predation Environment On The Sensory Ecology Of Brachyrhaphis Rhabdophora, Alexandra Grace Duffy Dec 2022

The Influence Of Predation Environment On The Sensory Ecology Of Brachyrhaphis Rhabdophora, Alexandra Grace Duffy

Theses and Dissertations

Across the animal kingdom, predation is a ubiquitous and omnipresent selective agent for a variety of traits. I aimed to address gaps in our knowledge pertaining to how predation shapes animal behavior. Many species of fish naturally occur in drainages that differ in the density of predators and exhibit obvious population divergence, making them ideal study organisms to investigate predator-driven behavioral evolution. In Chapter 1, I conducted a systematic review of the literature. The purpose of this review was to determine if predation acted as a stronger or weaker selective agent on particular behavioral traits (e.g., foraging, mating, antipredator etc.) …

Variation In The M-Opioid Receptor (Oprm1) And Offspring Sex Are Associated With Maternal Behavior In Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta), Zachary Baron Dec 2022

Variation In The M-Opioid Receptor (Oprm1) And Offspring Sex Are Associated With Maternal Behavior In Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta), Zachary Baron

Theses and Dissertations

A m-opioid receptor (OPRM1) single-nucleotide-polymorphism, found in both humans and rhesus macaques mediates the mother-infant attachment bond. Because mothers treat their sons and daughters differently, it is somewhat surprising that the role of infant sex has not been assessed in the context of a maternal-OPRM1-genotype-by-infant-sex interaction. The present study investigates the effect of maternal-OPRM1-genotype and infant sex on mother-infant behaviors. Over the first six months of offspring life, mother-infant behavioral data assessing attachment quality was collected twice weekly from a large number of rhesus monkey mother-infant pairs (N=161 dyads; n=64 female infants, n=97 male infants). Mothers were genotyped for OPRM1 …

Quantifying Volatile Fatty Acid Concentrations During The Pretreatment And Anaerobic Digestion Process, Sascha Boutelle Dec 2022

Quantifying Volatile Fatty Acid Concentrations During The Pretreatment And Anaerobic Digestion Process, Sascha Boutelle

Theses and Dissertations

Producing renewable energy from biomass or from the wastewater treatment process has gained momentum in the past 20 years. Anaerobic digestion has historically been used as one step in the waste treatment process, to both reduce the mass of waste that needs to be disposed of and to generate biogas. This process is typically only able to reduce 30-40% of the waste mass because of the recalcitrant nature of the waste streams being treated. Anaerobic pretreatment with the thermophilic bacteria Caldicellulosiruptor bescii (C. bescii) has been proven to increase the percentage of mass digested and consequently increase methane production to …

Understanding The Ahupua'a: Using Remote Sensing To Measure Upland Erosion And Evaluate Coral Reef Structure, Logan Kalaiwaipono Ellis Dec 2022

Understanding The Ahupua'a: Using Remote Sensing To Measure Upland Erosion And Evaluate Coral Reef Structure, Logan Kalaiwaipono Ellis

Theses and Dissertations

Under ever intensifying pressures from land use, climate change, and erosion, tropical islands are among the most vulnerable systems in the world. Terrestrial systems are weakened by intensifying land use patterns, the weakening of which is highlighted when high intensity rainfall events erode sediment and leads to sediment deposition on the marine system. The deposition of sediment on the marine system is a major stressor that can lead to weakened coral reefs and a decrease in marine resources commonly gathered for food. These interactions have led to the emergence of biocultural resource management strategies, one of which is the ahupua'a …

Of Bugs And Wildfires: Tracing The Impacts Of Changing Wildfire Regimes On Aquatic Bacteria And Macroinvertebrates Using Edna, Isabella M. Errigo Dec 2022

Of Bugs And Wildfires: Tracing The Impacts Of Changing Wildfire Regimes On Aquatic Bacteria And Macroinvertebrates Using Edna, Isabella M. Errigo

Theses and Dissertations

Human disruption of climate, habitat, and ignition has altered the behavior of wildland fire at local to continental scales. In many regions, novel fire regimes are emerging that threaten to exceed the capacity for local management to protect human wellbeing and ecosystem function. Simultaneous changes in climate, species composition, and fire management have resulted in extreme fire behavior in many regions. For the Western United States, the emerging novel fire regime consists of more frequent, severe, and intense wildfires, with annual area burned by wildfire having doubled and high-severity wildfire area having increased 8-fold since the 1980s. The impacts of …

Effect Of Climate History On The Genetic Structure Of An Antarctic Soil Nematode, Abigail C. Jackson Dec 2022

Effect Of Climate History On The Genetic Structure Of An Antarctic Soil Nematode, Abigail C. Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

Historical climate disturbances such as glacial cycling and fluctuating stream, lake, and sea levels strongly influence the distribution and evolutionary trajectories of Antarctic terrestrial species. Antarctic invertebrates, with limited long-range mobility, including the ubiquitous sentinel nematode species Scottnema lindsayae, are especially sensitive to climate disturbances. We tested hypotheses associated with the historical geographic and population genetic structure of this species as it occurs across the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDVs) of Antarctica. In order to reconstruct the influence of climate disturbance and ecological conditions on this species, partial mitochondrial COI gene sequences were sequenced and analyzed from individual S. lindsayae collected …

Potential Local Extirpation Of An Imperiled Freshwater Mussel Population From Wildfire Runoff, Andrew J. Lawrence, Cindy Matuch, Jacquelyn J. Hancock, Andrew L. Rypel, Laura A. Eliassen Dec 2022

Potential Local Extirpation Of An Imperiled Freshwater Mussel Population From Wildfire Runoff, Andrew J. Lawrence, Cindy Matuch, Jacquelyn J. Hancock, Andrew L. Rypel, Laura A. Eliassen

Western North American Naturalist

Effects of wildfire and subsequent hydric erosion on freshwater communities are of increasing interest. While freshwater biodiversity is in a global state of decline, examples of climate-driven wildfire impacts to freshwater mussel populations are especially limited. We discovered a population of native floater mussels (Anodonta californiensis/nuttalliana), documented fish species, and recorded data on river substrate characteristics before and after an influx of wildfire runoff in Monterey County, California, USA. Pre-wildfire runoff surveys documented robust and naturally reproducing populations of mussels and 3 species of native fishes (Monterey sucker, Catostomus occidentalis mnioltiltus; Monterey roach, Lavinia symmetricus subditus; …

Core Microbiome To Fingerprint Dust Emission Sources Across The Western United States Of America, Detiare Lisa Leifi Dec 2022

Core Microbiome To Fingerprint Dust Emission Sources Across The Western United States Of America, Detiare Lisa Leifi

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past century, dust emissions have increased in frequency and intensity due to anthropogenic influences and extended droughts. Dust transports microbes, nutrients, heavy metals and other materials that may then change the biogeochemistry of the receiving environments. The purpose of this study was to find whether unique bacterial communities may provide distinct fingerprints of dust sources in the Western USA. We collaborated with the National Wind Erosion Research Network (NWERN) to identify bacterial core communities (core) of dust from ten NWERN sites, and compared communities to location, soil, and regional characteristics. In order of importance, precipitation levels (F = …

The Effect Of Gut Microbiota On Overwintering Success In Mule Deer, Emma Wilcox Dec 2022

The Effect Of Gut Microbiota On Overwintering Success In Mule Deer, Emma Wilcox

Theses and Dissertations

Mule deer are an important rangeland grazer, large prey species, and game animal for the state of Utah, so herd size is monitored and managed actively. A significant cause of population decline is poor overwintering survival, including from the lack of available forage during winter months. Mule deer energy storage is correlated with greater overwintering success, so physical estimates of energy storage including body condition score (BCS), rump fat (RF), and loin thickness (LT), can be used to track and predict a herd's health. Current methods of collecting deer information are costly, time consuming, and cause physical stress to deer, …

Advanced Isogeometric Discretization Techniques, Kyle Dennis Richardson Dec 2022

Advanced Isogeometric Discretization Techniques, Kyle Dennis Richardson

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I provide a robust, efficient inverse mapping algorithm for use in immersed simulation methods, specifically in the Flex Representation Method. I also explore a structural theory that unifies the theories of solids, shells, beams, and rigid bodies. As part of this, I preform a preliminary exploration of applying the Flex Representation Method to shells. Finally, I explore why higher order elements suffer from small critical time steps in explicit dynamics. I then propose a simple method of remedying this issue by exploiting the properties of U-splines.

The Cholera-Fiend: Cheap Fiction, Medical Professionals, And Entertainment, Sariah Fales Harrington Dec 2022

The Cholera-Fiend: Cheap Fiction, Medical Professionals, And Entertainment, Sariah Fales Harrington

Theses and Dissertations

First published in 1849, Charles Averill’s The Cholera-Fiend follows three villains as they attempt to artificially propagate cholera for their own villainous purposes in New York City. Gumbo, a Black servant to one of the villains, is meant to be the humorous relief in the text, but Gumbo experiences a calculated dehumanization from human to disabled, which causes him to be more at-risk for a health crisis—such as a tapeworm or cholera—than his white counterparts. Through analyzing the genre of cheap fiction, the views of medical professionals towards Black bodies, and other ways Black bodies were used as entertainment, I …

Biofilm Characterization And The Potential Role Of Edna In Horizontal Gene Transfer In Hospital And Meat Isolates Of Staphylococcus Aureus And Their Biofilms, Ashley Lynne Ball Dec 2022

Biofilm Characterization And The Potential Role Of Edna In Horizontal Gene Transfer In Hospital And Meat Isolates Of Staphylococcus Aureus And Their Biofilms, Ashley Lynne Ball

Theses and Dissertations

Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogen responsible for a wide variety of life-threatening diseases such as bacteremia, endocarditis, and pneumoniae. S. aureus has been a major concern in recent years due to the rampant spread of antibiotic resistance. The ability of S. aureus to form biofilms aids in the spread of antibiotic resistance as biofilms are a known hotspot for horizontal gene transfer. Biofilms also protect cells from host immune responses and antibiotics, making these infections very difficult to treat. The matrix of S. aureus biofilms can be made of polysaccharides, protein, and DNA. In these studies, we sought to elucidate …

The Role Of Chitinase A In Mastitis-Associated Escherichia Coli Pathogenesis, Weston D. Hutchison Dec 2022

The Role Of Chitinase A In Mastitis-Associated Escherichia Coli Pathogenesis, Weston D. Hutchison

Theses and Dissertations

Bovine mastitis is a common disease among dairy cattle characterized by the inflammation of the udders and loss of milk production. Mastitis-associated Escherichia coli (MAEC) are frequent causes of the disease, but the features that distinguish them from other E. coli strains remain enigmatic. MAEC infections can range from sub-clinical to severe, acute cases that can be fatal. Historically, the severity of mastitis has been attributed to host factors but more recently, a few bacterial genes have been shown to contribute to virulence in mastitis infections. In a large-scale genomic analysis of >100 MAEC isolates the gene for Chitinase A …

Theses and Dissertations

This grounded theory methodology (GTM) study examines the process of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in coming to accept a transgender or gender diverse (TGD) child. Data comes from interviews with 38 Latter-day Saint parents of TGD children and 130 Facebook posts from the same population. Data was analyzed using GTM in coding and theory construction. A model of Latter-day Saint parents' process in accepting a TGD child and the factors that impact that process is presented. The results indicate that coming to accept a TGD child tends to engage Latter-day Saint parents cognitively, emotionally, …

Does Predation Environment Affect Repeated Responses To Predation Cuesâ In The Fishâ Brachyrhaphis Rhabdophora?, Madeleine S. Nate Dec 2022

Does Predation Environment Affect Repeated Responses To Predation Cuesâ In The Fishâ Brachyrhaphis Rhabdophora?, Madeleine S. Nate

Theses and Dissertations

Individual organisms face trade-offs when dealing with predation—more time spent avoiding predators often results in less time allocated to energy acquisition and reproductive-related activities. Individuals that optimize this trade-off and respond appropriately to current risk levels in their environment should be at an advantage. What is less clear is whether this tradeoff changes when individuals are repeatedly exposed to a predation threat. There may be advantages to responding consistently to every signal of threat, but it might also be advantageous to modulate individual behavior. Moreover, it is unclear how evolutionary history of a population might affect such individual responses. Our …

Teaching Social-Emotional Learning To Children With Autism Using Animated Avatar Video Modeling, Emelie Davis Dec 2022

Teaching Social-Emotional Learning To Children With Autism Using Animated Avatar Video Modeling, Emelie Davis

Theses and Dissertations

People with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have difficulties understanding or applying skills related to Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). An individual having a better understanding of SEL concepts is generally associated with more fulfilling connections with others and increased satisfaction in life. Since people with ASD tend to have greater success with learning in structured environments, we created a module to teach these skills using Nearpod. These modules were created with videos of a person embodying a cartoon dog face using Animoji for two reasons; because the animation was meant to appeal to children, and the creation was …

Identity Work To Teach Mathematics For Social Justice, Navy B. Dixon Dec 2022

Identity Work To Teach Mathematics For Social Justice, Navy B. Dixon

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, mathematics educators are conceptualized as individuals with multiple, simultaneous figured worlds that inform their decisions while planning. The study explores how two mathematics educators negotiated and orchestrated their figured worlds to plan two mathematics lessons for social justice. The results highlight how numerous the figured worlds each participant surfaced through background interviews. Some of the figured worlds were elicited by the interview questions (i.e., Race, Family, Social Justice Teaching) but other figured worlds organically surfaced through the interviews (i.e., Sexuality, Community, Activism, Critical Information Consumption). A discursive analysis of a selection of these figured worlds revealed conceptualizations …

Quantifying Shape Variation In An Antisymmetrical Trait In Xenophallus Umbratilis, Mary-Elise Johnson Nielsen Dec 2022

Quantifying Shape Variation In An Antisymmetrical Trait In Xenophallus Umbratilis, Mary-Elise Johnson Nielsen

Theses and Dissertations

Antisymmetry is a striking, yet puzzling form of biological asymmetry. The livebearing fish Xenophallus umbratilis exhibits antisymmetry in the male intromittent organ and provides a system that is well-suited for studying the nature of variation in antisymmetrical traits. Using geometric morphometrics, I test the hypothesis that because the gonopodium is critical to fitness there will not be significant differences in gonopodium shape between the two gonopodial morphs in this species. My results are consistent with this prediction, though I found that gonopodium shape did differ with gonopodium size.

"This Is The Way": Gender Representation In Disney's The Mandalorian, Brooke Solorio Dec 2022

"This Is The Way": Gender Representation In Disney's The Mandalorian, Brooke Solorio

Theses and Dissertations

When Disney released The Mandalorian, it quickly became the top show on its highly popular streaming platform. As with all media wielding this level of exposure, it is important to closely examine its content for depictions of peoples including females. In accordance with Sandra Bem's gender schema theory, the implicit messaging in this series can influence the formation of people's mental shortcuts about what it means to be female. This study employs content analysis to illuminate the portrayal of physical and non-physical attributes of the women present in the two seasons existing at the time of this study. Results reveal …

An Augmented Reality Maintenance Assistant With Real-Time Quality Inspection On Handheld Mobile Devices, James Thomas Frandsen Dec 2022

An Augmented Reality Maintenance Assistant With Real-Time Quality Inspection On Handheld Mobile Devices, James Thomas Frandsen

Theses and Dissertations

With the advances of industry 4.0, augmented reality (AR) devices are being deployed across the manufacturing sector to enhance worker perception and efficiency. AR is often used to deliver spatially relevant work instructions on mobile devices for maintenance procedures on the factory floor. In these situations, workers use their mobile devices to view instructions in the form of 3D animations and annotations that directly overlay the equipment being maintained. Workers then follow the AR instructions and must ultimately rely on their own judgement and knowledge of the procedure as they progress from step to step. An AR assistant that could …

Effects Of Microbial Transglutaminase On Gluten-Free Sourdough Bread Structure And Loaf Characteristics, Anna J. Redd

Theses and Dissertations

In an effort to mimic the continuous protein matrix found in gluten-containing breads, the effects of the enzyme microbial transglutaminase were tested in gluten-free (GF) sourdough breads containing five different GF flours: chickpea, brown rice, white rice, oat, and quinoa. The utilization of transglutaminase in GF sourdough bread applications was shown to improve some of the final bread characteristics of GF breads. White and brown rice GF sourdough loaves at 24 hours showed a 28% and 13% decrease in crumb firmness with the addition of 2 U/g dough, respectively. Quinoa-GF sourdough breads at 24 hours showed a 6% increase in …

“Surfaces And Appearances”: Character, Physiognomy, And Communication In Charles Dickens’S And Wilkie Collins’S A Message From The Sea, Rachel Gouff Dec 2022

“Surfaces And Appearances”: Character, Physiognomy, And Communication In Charles Dickens’S And Wilkie Collins’S A Message From The Sea, Rachel Gouff

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis analyzes the way physiognomy works within Charles Dickens’s and Wilkie Collins’s novella, A Message from the Sea. The novella develops and promotes a version of physiognomy with limits, illustrating these limits through the experiences of its characters and through the symbolism of various objects such as tombstones, ghosts, and—most notably—the message in the bottle. Physiognomy, used repeatedly by various characters throughout the text, is nearly always able to correctly predict people’s general moral character. However, using physiognomy alone leaves a character’s history, motivations, and deep emotions as indecipherable as the parts of the bottle’s message where the ink …

Focusing Of High-Amplitude Sound Waves Using The Time Reversal Process, Brian D. Patchett Dec 2022

Focusing Of High-Amplitude Sound Waves Using The Time Reversal Process, Brian D. Patchett

Theses and Dissertations

Time reversal is a method often used to focus sound to a desired location, and works best in a reverberant environment. The effect of focus location within a reverberant environment is presented first, revealing that proximity to reflecting surfaces has a significant effect on the amplitude of the focus both experimentally and when using a modal summation model. These effects are a primary component to creating focus signals at high amplitudes. High-amplitude focusing experiments show that when multiple sources are used simultaneously to generate a focus, a peak amplitude pressure spike of 200 dB can be achieved in air. A …

Prescriptive Lists: A Taxonomy Of Lists Used In Prescriptive Discourse, Kelsie Westphal Dec 2022

Prescriptive Lists: A Taxonomy Of Lists Used In Prescriptive Discourse, Kelsie Westphal

Undergraduate Honors Theses

English prescriptive discourse generally shares language rules in the form of entries, many of which contain lists. However, while lists have recently caught the attention of scholars in several fields, not much if any research has been dedicated to the use of lists in prescriptive discourse. This thesis begins the exploration of the use of lists in prescriptive discourse by creating a taxonomy of lists found in prescriptive reference works such as usage guides and style guides. The study then discusses how characteristics of lists and of the categories featured in the taxonomy interact with prescription, opening the door for …

Critical Race Theory, Natural Rights, And The Fate Of Liberalism, Landon Hooley Dec 2022

Critical Race Theory, Natural Rights, And The Fate Of Liberalism, Landon Hooley

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Is critical race theory compatible with liberalism? I argue that it is not, and that natural rights theory, liberalism's rational core, ought to be preferred as the primary framework to create public policy and understand the law. Critical race theory (CRT) has outgrown its original design as a legal critique and become a political worldview, although it is not developed enough to constitute an ideology or philosophy. It has inspired various organizations and movements that expand upon its principles and propose ideals and policies that conflict with the current constitutional liberal order. Many conflicts between natural rights theory and critical …

Historical And Recent Breeding Of The Western Grebe And Clark's Grebe In A Severely Impaired Ecosystem At Clear Lake, California, Floyd E. Hayes, Bryan J. Mcintosh, Dylan G. Turner, Douglas E. Weidemann Dec 2022

Historical And Recent Breeding Of The Western Grebe And Clark's Grebe In A Severely Impaired Ecosystem At Clear Lake, California, Floyd E. Hayes, Bryan J. Mcintosh, Dylan G. Turner, Douglas E. Weidemann

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

Clear Lake is a large (176.7-km2) natural lake in northern California, USA. An estimated 1000 pairs of Western Grebes (Aechmophorus occidentalis) and Clark’s Grebes (A. clarkii) nested on the lake prior to massive applications of the pesticide dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD) to kill the Clear Lake gnat (Chaoborus astictopus) during 1949–1957. Biomagnification of DDD was implicated as the cause of several mass mortality events of grebes and short-term reproductive failure in the 1950s, although other factors such as mercury (Hg) poisoning may have contributed. Successful nesting resumed in 1960 and increased gradually, with up …
