The Andrew Jenson Collection, Ronald W. Walker, Richard E. Turley Jr.
BYU Studies
Andrew Jenson, who later became an Assistant Church Historian, collected material on Mountain Meadows for the immediate need of helping Orson F. Whitney write his History of Utah and the longer-range purpose of one day bringing to light all of “the true facts” of the massacre. Nearly from its inception, the Jenson material has been housed at the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah—a portion of it in the First Presidency’s Office and the rest in the Church Historian’s Office (now the Church History Library). The Jenson material includes statements made …

A Review Of Fibroblast Populated Collagen Lattices, J. C. Dallon, Paul H. Ehrlich
A Review Of Fibroblast Populated Collagen Lattices, J. C. Dallon, Paul H. Ehrlich
Faculty Publications
Bellaes introduction of the fibroblast populated collagen lattice (FPCL) (1) has facilitated the study of collagen-cell interactions. As a result of the numerous modifications of the casting of FPCL's, the in vivo applications of these in vitro findings has been confusing. Here experimental FPCL contraction findings are viewed in regard to three proposed mechanisms responsible for lattice contraction. The cellular mechanisms responsible for generating FPCL contraction are: cell contraction, cell tractional forces related to cell locomotion, and initial cell elongation and spreading.
Data-Driven Programming And Behavior For Autonomous Virtual Characters, Jonathan Dinerstein, Parris K. Egbert, Michael A. Goodrich, Dan A. Ventura
Data-Driven Programming And Behavior For Autonomous Virtual Characters, Jonathan Dinerstein, Parris K. Egbert, Michael A. Goodrich, Dan A. Ventura
Faculty Publications
In the creation of autonomous virtual characters, two levels of autonomy are common. They are often called motion synthesis (low-level autonomy) and behavior synthesis (high-level autonomy), where an action (i.e. motion) achieves a short-term goal and a behavior is a sequence of actions that achieves a long-term goal. There exists a rich literature addressing many aspects of this general problem (and it is discussed in the full paper). In this paper we present a novel technique for behavior (high-level) autonomy and utilize existing motion synthesis techniques. Creating an autonomous virtual character with behavior synthesis abilities frequently includes three stages: forming …

Dialectic, Perspective, And Drama, Ethan Mckay Sproat
Theses and Dissertations
This project is by and large a project of elucidation: it may add something to studies of Kenneth Burke, but I doubt it adds much to Kenneth Burke's studies. This thesis begins and ends with analyses of Burke's famous motto Ad Bellum Purificandum (or Toward the Purification of War). The Introduction focuses on "war" while the Conclusion focuses on "purification." In short, purified war is a dialectical activity which actively and perpetually pits divergent perspectives against each other. Such an activity keeps the conflictual nature of divergent perspectives in verbal and symbolic arenas rather than physical ones. Burke owes this …
Pygmy Rabbit (Brachylagus Idahoensis) Habitat Use, Activity Patterns And Conservation In Relationship To Habitat Treatments, Janet E. Lee
Pygmy Rabbit (Brachylagus Idahoensis) Habitat Use, Activity Patterns And Conservation In Relationship To Habitat Treatments, Janet E. Lee
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined activity patterns and habitat use of pygmy rabbits (Brachylagus idahoensis) in mechanically treated and untreated areas in south-central Utah 2005-2008. We monitored fecal pellet plots in continuous sagebrush habitat as well as along treatment edges to record deposition and leporid presence over timed periods. Pygmy rabbit use of big sagebrush was higher than black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) and mountain cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus nuttallii ) (P< 0.01) relative to treated areas (P <0.01). We also compared pygmy rabbit use of areas with continuous sagebrush to residual sagebrush in a sample of mechanically treated areas. Our results suggest a treatment effect with higher (P <0.01) average counts of pygmy rabbit pellets in areas with continuous sagebrush compared to sagebrush strips and islands within treated areas. Before the big sagebrush biotype inhabited by pygmy rabbits is treated to reduce the occurrence and dominance of big sagebrush, we recommend managers consider two options. The first is no treatment, thus preserving, as is, the critical habitat of the pygmy rabbit and other sympatric big sagebrush obligate species of wildlife. The second option cautiously introduces the first prescription of habitat treatment ever recommended in relationship to the pygmy rabbit. This prescription includes recommended widths of the treated areas, seed mixes, widths of the preserved intact big sagebrush habitat for pygmy rabbits as well as suggested grazing systems for domestic livestock. Activity patterns of pygmy rabbits at their burrow were documented through the use of remote cameras. Photographs were analyzed for temporal and seasonal patterns of activity. Our results suggested that time of day was important in the activity level of pygmy rabbits while season was not. Pygmy rabbits were active during all time periods of the day but the greatest levels of activity occurred at night. Numerous other wildlife species were recorded by our remote cameras including other species of leporids, birds, rodents, reptiles and terrestrial predators.
Vision-Assisted Control Of A Hovering Air Vehicle In An Indoor Setting, Neil G. Johnson
Vision-Assisted Control Of A Hovering Air Vehicle In An Indoor Setting, Neil G. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
The quadrotor helicopter is a unique flying vehicle which uses the thrust from four motors to provide hover flight capability. The uncoupled nature of the longitudinal and lateral axes and its ability to support large payloads with respect to its size make it an attractive vehicle for autonomous vehicle research. In this thesis, the quadrotor is modeled based on first principles and a proportional-derivative control method is applied for attitude stabilization and position control. A unique means of using an optic flow sensor for velocity and position estimation in an indoor setting is presented with flight results. Reliable hover flight …
The Impact Of Web-Based Tutorials In One Corporation's Transition To A Blended Learning Environment, Michelle Anne Boyd
The Impact Of Web-Based Tutorials In One Corporation's Transition To A Blended Learning Environment, Michelle Anne Boyd
Theses and Dissertations
ELM Resources, a not-for-profit, mutual-benefit corporation, provides web-based transmission and data translation services for student loan data between loan providers and schools/universities. This corporation has a relatively new training staff of five to seven employees and over 1,800 client organizations. Because of the heavy demands placed on the training staff, ELM training administrators sought alternatives to their current training program of onsite training and web conferencing. Blended learning was identified as one possible solution. In this project, blended learning is defined as using a combination of face-to-face training and technology-delivered training. By adding web-based, on-demand tutorials, along with other training …

Marina Carr's Hauntings: Liminality And The Addictive Society On And Off The Stage, Hillary Jarvis Campos
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an examination of the trapped lives of Marina Carr's female protagonists and their relevance to contemporary Irish women. In her six plays from The Mai to Woman and Scarecrow, each of Carr's female protagonists is trapped either in a liminal state, defined by Victor Turner as a phase in a rites of passage process, or in a patriarchal addictive society, defined by Anne Wilson Schaef as a society in which the power is maintained and perpetuated by white males with the help of all members of society including women. Portia (Portia Coughlan), Hester (By the Bog of …
Interactive Part Selection For Mesh And Point Models Using Hierarchical Graph-Cut Partitioning, Steven W. Brown
Interactive Part Selection For Mesh And Point Models Using Hierarchical Graph-Cut Partitioning, Steven W. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a method for interactive part selection for mesh and point set surface models that combines scribble-based selection methods with hierarchically accelerated graph-cut segmentation. Using graph-cut segmentation to determine optimal intuitive part boundaries enables easy part selection on complex geometries and allows for a simple, scribble-based interface that focuses on selecting within visible parts instead of precisely defining part boundaries that may be in difficult or occluded regions. Hierarchical acceleration is used to maintain interactive speeds with large models and to determine connectivity when extending the technique to point set models.
Sympathetic Observations: Widowhood, Spectatorship, And Sympathy In The Fiction Of Henry James, George Michael Gordon-Smith
Sympathetic Observations: Widowhood, Spectatorship, And Sympathy In The Fiction Of Henry James, George Michael Gordon-Smith
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the roles of widowhood and sympathy in Henry James's short and long fiction. By the time James established himself as a writer of fiction, the culture of sentiment and its formation of sympathetic identification had become central to American and British writers. Critically, however, sympathy in James's fiction has been overlooked because he chose to write about rich expatriates and European nobility. James's pervasive use of widowed characters in his fiction suggests the he too participated in the same aesthetic agenda as William Dean Howells and George Eliot to evoke sympathy in their readers as a means …
Oral Retelling As A Measure Of Reading Comprehension: The Generalizability Of Ratings Of Elementary School Students Reading Expository Texts, Rachel Clinger Burton
Oral Retelling As A Measure Of Reading Comprehension: The Generalizability Of Ratings Of Elementary School Students Reading Expository Texts, Rachel Clinger Burton
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to refine a rating procedure used to assess intermediate elementary school students' ability to orally retell what they had read from two expository passages. Oral retellings from 28 fourth grade students were tape-recorded and rated on two different occasions by each of 4 raters. A four-facet (passage, day of test administration, rater, and rating occasion) generalizability study was conducted using a partially nested design. The six largest sources of variability identified in the G-study included (a) students, (b) the student-by-day interaction, (c) the interaction of passage with rater (nested within student and day), (d) …

Diet Of The Mogollon Vole As Indicated By Stable-Isotope Analysis (Δ13C And Δ15N), Carol L. Chambers, Richard R. Doucett
Western North American Naturalist
There are no published studies on the diet of Mogollon voles (Microtus mogollonensis) although this species occurs throughout the Southwest in montane forestlands. Mogollon voles are believed to be herbivorous, selecting the vegetative portion of grass as their dominant food source. Herbivores frequently select more easily digested C3 plants over C4 plants; we thus expected Mogollon voles would feed primarily on C3 plants. We collected hair samples from Mogollon voles captured in northern Arizona between 1967 and 2003 and plant samples from some capture sites. Then we compared stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen …
The Man In The Transatlantic Crowd: The Early Reception Of Edgar Allan Poe In Victorian England, Brian Robert Wall
The Man In The Transatlantic Crowd: The Early Reception Of Edgar Allan Poe In Victorian England, Brian Robert Wall
Theses and Dissertations
An important anomaly in transatlantic criticism is the contrast between transatlantic theory and the applied criticism of literature through a transatlantic lens. While most transatlantic scholars assert the value of individual strands of thought throughout the globe and stress the importance of overcoming national hegemonic barriers in literature, applied criticism generally favors an older model that privileges British literary thought in the nineteenth century. I claim that both British and American writers can influence each other, and that mutations in thought can travel both ways across the Atlantic. To argue this claim, I begin by analyzing the influence of Blackwood's …
Response Of Antelope Bitterbrush Shrubsteppe To Variation In Livestock Grazing, P. G. Krannitz
Response Of Antelope Bitterbrush Shrubsteppe To Variation In Livestock Grazing, P. G. Krannitz
Western North American Naturalist
Shrubsteppe ecosystems in the Intermountain West have suffered extreme alteration from a variety of factors. Using a retrospective approach, I studied the effects of horse and cattle grazing at the northern edge of the range in southern British Columbia, Canada, where the shrubsteppe is not as heavily altered and ungrazed sites remain in areas dominated by antelope bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata). I measured shrub and understory cover at 10 sites that were either ungrazed, lightly grazed, or heavily grazed. Cover of antelope bitterbrush decreased with grazing, and cover of big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) increased with grazing intensity. …
Aquatic Invertebrate Fauna Of A Northern Prairie Stream: Range Extensions And Water Quality Characteristics, Iain D. Phillips, Dale Parker, Glen Mcmaster
Aquatic Invertebrate Fauna Of A Northern Prairie Stream: Range Extensions And Water Quality Characteristics, Iain D. Phillips, Dale Parker, Glen Mcmaster
Western North American Naturalist
The benthic macroinvertebrate fauna of southern Saskatchewan, Canada, has received little attention relative to other regions of western North America. Therefore, little is known of the related aquatic ecosystem health and biogeography of regional aquatic insects. Here we present the results of an aquatic macroinvertebrate survey for the Pipestone Creek watershed in southeastern Saskatchewan. We qualitatively sampled aquatic macroinvertebrates in 5 sites on 4 dates through spring, summer, and fall 2006. Sampling produced 294 taxa of macroinvertebrates including 25 provincial range extensions to the southeast corner of the province. Presence/absence data of taxa grouped the sites into lentic and lotic …
Northern Bobwhite Habitat Selection In Relation To Brush Management In The Rolling Plains Of Texas, Dean Ransom Jr., Roel R. Lopez, Gerral G. Schulz, Joel S. Wagner
Northern Bobwhite Habitat Selection In Relation To Brush Management In The Rolling Plains Of Texas, Dean Ransom Jr., Roel R. Lopez, Gerral G. Schulz, Joel S. Wagner
Western North American Naturalist
Many rangelands in the southwestern United States provide quality habitat for Northern Bobwhites (Colinus virginianus). These same habitats are frequently managed for livestock production and thus are subjected to various brush management practices that are meant to enhance forage production. Bobwhites rely on woody cover for food, thermal and loafing cover, and protection from avian predators. Implementing brush management practices that reflect bobwhite requirements is important for managing usable space and viable populations. We described the structural vegetative characteristics associated with bobwhite locations and random locations on native rangelands in the upper Rolling Plains of Texas that are …
Influence Of Soil And Site Characteristics On Palouse Prairie Plant Communities, Thor Hanson, Yaniria Sánchez–De León, Jodi Johnson-Maynard, Steve Brunsfeld
Influence Of Soil And Site Characteristics On Palouse Prairie Plant Communities, Thor Hanson, Yaniria Sánchez–De León, Jodi Johnson-Maynard, Steve Brunsfeld
Western North American Naturalist
The structure of grassland communities can vary widely in response to heterogeneous habitat variables. In this study we document plant communities, soil types, and site characteristics for 12 Palouse prairie remnants in southeastern Washington and northern Idaho. We used general linear models to test the predictive value of 6 biophysical variables (slope, aspect, distance from edge, edge type, vegetation structure, and soil type) on 3 plant community metrics: species richness, Simpson's diversity index, and the dominance of exotic species. From full models including all variables, we used Akaike's information criterion (AIC) to select the best model for each metric. Aspect …
Capture Rates Of Reptiles And Amphibians On Black-Tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys Ludovicianus) Colonies And On Uncolonized Prairie In Colorado, Bryon K. Shipley, Richard P. Reading, Brian J. Miller
Capture Rates Of Reptiles And Amphibians On Black-Tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys Ludovicianus) Colonies And On Uncolonized Prairie In Colorado, Bryon K. Shipley, Richard P. Reading, Brian J. Miller
Western North American Naturalist
Prairie dog eradication negatively affects dependent wildlife. Assessing the effects of prairie dog activities on reptiles and amphibians may depend upon the efficacy of trapping designs. We compared capture rates of reptiles and amphibians on black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies and on adjacent uncolonized short-grass prairie, using funnel traps and pitfall traps with drift fences, as well as ground captures. We captured 152 reptiles and amphibians representing 10 species. We captured 51.3% of all reptiles and amphibians on colonies, compared to 48.7% from uncolonized sites. Overall, captures of reptiles and amphibians were similar on colonies and uncolonized …
Swift Fox Response To Prescribed Fire In Shortgrass Steppe, Craig M. Thompson, David J. Augustine, Darren M. Mayers
Swift Fox Response To Prescribed Fire In Shortgrass Steppe, Craig M. Thompson, David J. Augustine, Darren M. Mayers
Western North American Naturalist
Swift foxes (Vulpes velox) are shortgrass specialists and as a result are heavily dependent upon grassland disturbance regimes to maintain high-quality habitat. To better understand this relationship, we monitored the movement and spatial ecology of resident swift foxes before and after a 2005 prescribed burn in southeastern Colorado. We hypothesized that foxes would shift home ranges into and increase foraging activity within the prescribed burn area. Foxes did appear to alter their space-use patterns in response to the burn, although the response was constrained by territoriality. Foxes whose core-use areas overlapped the burn increased their use of the …
Caudal Movements In Western Fence Lizards (Sceloporus Occidentalis) Prior To Attempted Prey Capture, C. Drew Foster, Patrick Martin
Caudal Movements In Western Fence Lizards (Sceloporus Occidentalis) Prior To Attempted Prey Capture, C. Drew Foster, Patrick Martin
Western North American Naturalist
Many snakes employ tail movements to attract prey, but this behavior is rare in lizards. Use of caudal movements to distract prey, however, is rare in all squamates. Recently, caudal movements in a Sceloporus occidentalis individual immediately prior to attempted prey capture were documented. We supplement this sole documentation of caudal movements in S. occidentalis with additional field observations. Additionally, video footage of the behavior was recorded on 2 occasions. From these additional observations, we hypothesize that this behavior might serve to distract prey.

The Architecture Of Instructional Theory, Andrew S. Gibbons, Clint P. Rogers
The Architecture Of Instructional Theory, Andrew S. Gibbons, Clint P. Rogers
Faculty Publications
This chapter joins a discussion of instructional theory that has been ongoing for nearly a century. It departs in some ways from prior discussions: (1) it considers instructional theory as a species of technological theory rather than as a type of scientific theory, a view expressed more fully elsewhere (Gibbons, 2003a), (2) it adopts the viewpoint articulated in earlier chapters of this book that there are multiple distinct bodies of technological theory that pertain to the work of instructional designers, (3) it attempts to articulate a particular view of the nature of two of those bodies of theory by describing …
Ranking Search Results For Translated Content, Brian Edwin Hawkins
Ranking Search Results For Translated Content, Brian Edwin Hawkins
Theses and Dissertations
Translation Memory (TM) is a valuable tool that helps human translators in doing their job. TM consists of a collection of previously translated texts, called translation units, that may prove useful in the translation of new text. The main problem faced by translators who wish to take advantage of TM is that, although search tools do exist, there is no standardized way of effectively ranking search results. This thesis proposes a method for ranking TM search results together with a novel approach to efficiently finding common substrings that is used in the ranking process.
The Relationship Between Psychological Well-Being And Work Productivity: Validation Of The Oq Productivity Index, Vinessa Kaye Trotter
The Relationship Between Psychological Well-Being And Work Productivity: Validation Of The Oq Productivity Index, Vinessa Kaye Trotter
Theses and Dissertations
Managed Mental Health Care (MMHC) began blanketing the United States when cost of care rose exponentially. MMHC is one avenue many employers and insurance companies have chosen to provide employees with mental health treatment at controlled costs. However, not all employers view supplying their employees with mental health treatment beneficial, as they do not know mental health problems can significantly decrease work productivity. Brown and Jones (2005) used the Social Role Scale (SR) of the Severe Outcome Questionnaire (SOQ) to estimate work productivity in employees under the assumption that the scale measures work productivity. The purpose of this study was …
Unamunian Microcosms: Four Short Stories In A New Translation Into English, Emily A. Davis
Unamunian Microcosms: Four Short Stories In A New Translation Into English, Emily A. Davis
Theses and Dissertations
Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno's short fiction is neglected in both the academic and nonacademic communities, and it is especially underrepresented in English-language translation. This thesis constitutes a comprehensive approach to four short stories: "El que se enterró," "La manchita de la uña," "Mecanópolis," and "Batracófilos y batracófobos." A detailed exploration of thematic resonances among them, and between these and other works by Unamuno, precedes side-by-side translations of all four texts, of which only "Mecanópolis" has been previously published in English translation.

Deception In Super Bowl Advertisements: An Analysis Of Deceptive Story Lines, Christopher R. Near
Theses and Dissertations
Many ethical studies have focused on advertising; however, they have yet to focus specifically on Super Bowl advertisements. This thesis examines the ethical issue of portraying deceptive acts within the storylines of Super Bowl advertisements from 1988-2008. Results indicate that 196 of the 2,172 advertisements studied, contain deceptive storylines. Most often the advertisements depicted white males, ages 30-64, using deception. Also, deception was usually done out of self interest at the expense of others. The deception often led to negative social, material, and emotional consequences for the person being deceived, with mostly positive outcomes being shown for the person doing …
