Graphical User Interface Design For Climate Impact Research Data Retrieval, Markus Wrobel, T. Nocke, Michael Flechsig, A. Glauer

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Complex, heterogeneous environmental data sets are produced and stored in many scientific disciplines. For managing complex structured data, database and data warehouse technologies have been established, providing access via standardized interfaces. Nevertheless, there are some obstacles for researchers in applying the full functionality of sophisticated data management systems. Here, graphical user interfaces (GUI) are essential for bridging the gap between such systems and scientific users. However, designing / developing user interfaces for complex, environmental data sets is not trivial, facing user diversity and a variety of tasks. Consequently, for the example of climate impact research, this paper introduces an approach …

Towards A Simulation-Based Study Of Grassland And Animal Diversity Management In Livestock Farming Systems, G. Martin, Michel Duru, Roger Martin-Clouaire, Jp Rellier, Jp Theau, O. Thérond, L. Hossard

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In less-favored areas, livestock production involves the management of native vegetation as a resource base. A challenging issue in such systems regards the design of efficient and sustainable management strategies that make it possible to exploit the diversity of grasslands and herd batches over different time scales. This paper describes the conceptual approach that supports the representation and simulation of farm-scale models of grassland-based livestock systems in the SEDIVER project. It enables the coupling of species-rich grasslands and livestock models with sophisticated decision-making models. The latter embed a representation of management strategies that specify in a flexible and adaptive manner …

Identifying State Variables In Multivariate Hydrological Time Series Using Time Series Knowledge Mining, O. Gronz, M. C. Casper, P. Gemmar

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The challenge of modeling rainfall-runoff processes is to define a suitable functional relationship between input variables representing precipitation measurements and the output runoff. Depending on the system’s state, the amount of precipitation resulting in direct flow varies strongly. Thus, state variables indicating the system’s actual state can enhance the accuracy of rainfall-runoff models significantly. Fuzzy models of Takagi-Sugeno-type are one of the effective approaches to simulate rainfall-runoff processes regarding the different system states. The design of a fuzzy rainfall-runoff model consists of two essential steps: the definition of the structure (input quantities, state variables, rules) and the identification of parameters …

Evolvable Biological Interfaces: An Outline Of The New Computing System, Igor Balaž, Dragutin T. Mihailović Jul 2008

Evolvable Biological Interfaces: An Outline Of The New Computing System, Igor Balaž, Dragutin T. Mihailović

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In this paper, we represent architecture of a new individual-based model of evolvable biological interfaces. The model is based on three parts: mutable coding sequence, individual agents produced by the coding sequence and external environment represented by various virtual substances. Agents are able to recognize external substances and to perform transformations on them. However, unlike general computational scheme currently used in evolutionary computation which is based on predefined list of actions, where each action have predefined fitness value defined strictly within current problem, the recognition and corresponding transformation in this model are organized in completely different way. Here we merged …

On The Role Of Pre And Post-Processing In Environmental Data Mining, Karina Gibert, Joaquín Izquierdo, Geoffrey Holmes, Ioannis N. Athanasiadis, Joaquim Comas, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The quality of discovered knowledge is highly depending on data quality. Unfortunately real data use to contain noise, uncertainty, errors, redundancies or even irrelevant information. The more complex is the reality to be analyzed, the higher the risk of getting low quality data. Knowledge Discovery from Databases (KDD) offers a global framework to prepare data in the right form to perform correct analyses. On the other hand, the quality of decisions taken upon KDD results, depend not only on the quality of the results themselves, but on the capacity of the system to communicate those results in an understandable form. …

Integration Of In-Situ And Remote Sensing Data For Water Risk Management, Bernhard H. C. Sputh, Oliver Faust, Lasse H. Pettersson, Torill Hamre, Damiano Vitulli, Alastair R. Allen, Tim Spracklen

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The combination of environmental measurements from different sensor equipment improveswater quality monitoring and associated risk management. The merging of in-situ andremote sensing data is a prerequisite to efficient monitoring of coastal and marine environments, because of their complementary nature and application areas. Both sensor types can monitorthe same phenomena, but remote sensing delivers the overall picture and in-situ measuring provideslocalised, high resolution measurements, over a wide range of parameters. The WARMER(WAter RiskManagement in EuRope) system combines remote sensing satellite data with in-situmeasurements for water quality risk management applications and delivers products to end-usersthrough a web GIS (Geographic Information System) portal. This …

Web-System For Air Quality Assessment Of The City Area Based On The Mathematical Modeling Data, A. Titov, D. Belikov, E. Gordov, A. Starchenko

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The limitations of the widespread methods of air pollution level estimation allow producing quite rough air quality estimations for the areas not covered by observation stations. Application of the computational models to this purpose requires usage of the meteorological observations, atmospheric emissions of industrial enterprises, measurements of the concentration of the atmospheric pollutants as well as the numerical modelling of the gaseous substance transformation and transport processes. High accuracy of estimation and forecast of air quality for such models are achieved with the use of information on pollutant emission from sources within the city and distribution of the meteorological parameters …

This paper describes the practical application of a participatory approach used in developing a model for assisting water resource management in the Kongulai catchment in the Solomon Islands. In collaboration with local water resource managers, the Kongulai was selected as the study site as it provides up to 60% of the water for Honiara, the capital. Management of this resource is complex, with potentially competing uses for the water and the catchment, including drinking, domestic, agricultural and industrial uses, as well as multiple threats from contamination, changing land-use and variable hydrology. Additional system considerations come from the multifaceted socio-economic and …

Two Interacting Environmental Interfaces: Bifurcation In Coupled Asymmetric Logistic Maps, Dragutin T. Mihailović Jul 2008

Two Interacting Environmental Interfaces: Bifurcation In Coupled Asymmetric Logistic Maps, Dragutin T. Mihailović

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The field of environmental sciences is abundant with various interfaces and it is the right place for application of new fundamental approaches leading towards better understanding of environmental phenomena. For example, following definition of environmental interface by Mihailovic and Balaž [2007], such interface can be placed between natural or artificially built surfaces and atmosphere. In this case, visible radiation provides almost all of the energy received on the environmental interface. Since all the energy transfer processes occurs in the finite time interval the energy balance equation for this environmental interface can be written in terms of finite differences of ground …

An Integrated Multimedia Model And Multicriteria Analysis Approach To Managing Sewage Sludge Application On Agricultural Soils: Framework And Methodology, Ana Passuello, Marta Schuhmacher, Vikas Kumar, M. Nadal, J. L. Domingo

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Sludge application to agricultural soils is a managing practice of increasing use, because of its benefits to soil and crops. The Council Directive 86/278/CEE regulates concentrations of heavy metals for sludge application, but has no restrictions related to organic compounds contamination. The Decision Support System (DSS) presented here, integrates a multimedia risk model of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to human and ecosystem (P), a model concern to areas’ vulnerability to nitrogen (N), and also an economical model (E), to indicate the best decision management for sludge application on agricultural soils. The three dimensional representation of the model allows a simple …

Large-Scale Modelling Of P-Inputs From Point And Diffuse Sources In German River Basins, Björn Tetzlaff, Frank Wendland

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Mean annual P-inputs from diffuse and point sources in large river basins can be quantified with the MEPhos model. Its emission approach is described, which distinguishes between both eight different input pathways (municipal waste water treatment plants, industrial plants, combined sewer overflows, rainwater sewers, artificial drainage, erosion, wash-off, groundwater-borne runoff) and various types of critical source areas named phosphotopes. Then, the results of a model application to two large-scale river basins are presented and discussed. The river basins (ca. 12,500 km²) each show contrasting natural conditions, land use patterns as well as population and industry densities. Total P-emissions from each river …

Promoting Access To And Reuse Of Modelling Projects - A Picture Book Approach, Ralf Seppelt

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Use and misuse of simulation models, model documentation, model comparisons and model integration are topics that never vanished from discussion on modelling and simulation. Especially under the frame of collaborative modelling these issues again gain importance. This contribution to the discussion does not offer another technological approach for this task. Here, the focus is put on documenting and assessing models and by this supporting the part of (re-) application of models. Using the metaphor of a collapsible picture book with which modellers, practitioners, stakeholders and other can access regions, models and modelling questions. The approach is suitable for scientific groups, …

Usability Assessment Of An Integrated Land Use Model In Portugal, Cárin Alves, Lúcio Do Rosário, Jasper Van Vliet, Hedwig Van Delden Jul 2008

Usability Assessment Of An Integrated Land Use Model In Portugal, Cárin Alves, Lúcio Do Rosário, Jasper Van Vliet, Hedwig Van Delden

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Regardless the possibilities of computer based tools for spatial planning, previous works have argued that planners have never fully used them. Some of the reasons that influence the acceptance and effective use of a new technology are the usability and the user’s perception of its relevance to improve their tasks. This research aims to assess the usability and usefulness of a planning support tool by planning organizations in Portugal. The tool has proven to be easy to use and very useful to users; however, some technical improvements were suggested in order to improve it.

Understanding Riverine Wetland-Catchment Processes Using Remote Sensing Data And Modelling, Ann Van Griensven, Yunqing Xuan, D. Haguma, W. Niyonzima Jul 2008

Understanding Riverine Wetland-Catchment Processes Using Remote Sensing Data And Modelling, Ann Van Griensven, Yunqing Xuan, D. Haguma, W. Niyonzima

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Many wetlands are dependent on river basin processes, and at the same time, scientists have recognised the important role of wetlands in the river basin: they are important zones for groundwater recharge, they temper high flows and are therefore very important to limit flooding. By purifying the water, wetlands also play a very important role for water quality. However, the underlying processes are often not very well known or are poorly quantified. This is especially true for many wetland rich basins in Africa that are poorly gauged or even ungauged. In this study we analyse to what extend remote sensing …

Optimizing Biogas Production: An Application To An Italian Farming District, Giulia Fiorese, Giorgio Guariso, A. Polimeni Jul 2008

Optimizing Biogas Production: An Application To An Italian Farming District, Giulia Fiorese, Giorgio Guariso, A. Polimeni

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Biogas can be extracted from animal manure through anaerobic digestion (AD) and can afterwards be used to produce energy. Moreover, this process reduces completely methane emissions and stabilizes the manure before its agronomic use. AD plants can be built in a wide range of capacities: as capacity increases, economies of scale in capital equipment are realized, but transportation costs increase as manure and the digested substrates must be conveyed over longer distances. It is thus a key issue to assess the tradeoffs between biomass’ transportation and plants’ capacity. We propose a method to evaluate the AD plants’ convenience on a …

Interaction Design For Rural Agricultural Sensor Networks, K. Walker, A. Kabashi, J. Abdelnour-Nocera, K. Ngugi, J. Underwood, J. Elmirghani, M. Prodanovic

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We describe the ongoing design of a sensor network for small family farms inrural Kenya. The sensor network is just one part of an ‘ecology of resources’ in whichhandheld devices are used to bridge the sensor network and a computer-based access point. We describe the two villages where the system is deployed and the user requirementscollected. We then describe the architecture of the sensor network and detail how it fits inwith the larger integrated system. We then detail our approach to interface and interactiondesign, and conclude by describing the next steps in the project.

Geo-Communication For Risk Assessment And Catastrophe Prevention Of Flood Events In The Coastal Areas Of Chennai, S. Glaser, R. Glaser, A. Drescher, C. Pfeiffer, E. Schliermann-Kraus, M. Lechner, J. Vencatesan

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Risk assessment of environmental stressors in the context of information and communication technologies is an emerging field of scientific research, for example to gain an understanding of how floods will develop. Geo-information technologies are accepted as powerful tools in crisis situations. To be successful in risk assessment and catastrophe prevention, it is essential to follow an interdisciplinary approach combining natural scientific, socio-economic and technical knowledge. At the same time it is important to combine top down (planning, official institutions) with bottom up views of the affected people. Interconnecting computational resources, human interdisciplinary expertise and local knowledge, following a top down …

Towards Process Oriented Environmental Monitoring Systems For Intelligent Risk Management, Oliver Faust, Bernhard H. C. Sputh, Alastair R. Allen

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Water monitoring and associated risk management requires a large number of in-situmonitoring stations. These stations measure water quality parameters and relay the measurementsto a data centre. From a data processing point of view, such systems constitute distributed processingnetworks. In present water monitoring systems and in a wide range of other environmentalmonitoring systems the network aspect stops at the node or in-situ monitoring station (IMS) level. This paper extends the networking idea from the system level to the IMS design level. We modelan in-situ monitoring station as a network of communicating sequential processes. For this networkwe establish the fundamental system properties such …
