Chiastic Structuring Of The Genesis Flood Story: The Art Of Using Chiasm As An Effective Compositional Tool For Combining Earlier Chiastic Narratives, Steven R. Scott May 2020

Chiastic Structuring Of The Genesis Flood Story: The Art Of Using Chiasm As An Effective Compositional Tool For Combining Earlier Chiastic Narratives, Steven R. Scott

BYU Studies

The story of the flood is perhaps one of the best-known stories of the Bible, and its chiastic nature has long been recognized by scholars, most prominently by Yehuda T. Radday and Gordon Wenham.1 These scholars’ theses will briefly be discussed before proceeding to a detailed analysis of the text, which will demonstrate that the biblical flood story is two chiasms combined—one by author “J” and another by author “P.”

Exegesis Or Eisegesis: Does Chiastic Analysis Help Us To Understand Leviticus 20?, Jonathan Burnside May 2020

Exegesis Or Eisegesis: Does Chiastic Analysis Help Us To Understand Leviticus 20?, Jonathan Burnside

BYU Studies

Chiastic studies have been vulnerable, on occasion, over the past fifty years to the charge that their existence may be more a matter of eisegesis rather than exegesis. This paper contends that it is possible to have objective, textual grounds for the existence of a chiasmus which can, in turn, be key to exegesis. In particular, it proposes that chiastic analysis helps us to understand the complexities of Lev 20 and, furthermore, that this text should be held up as an example of a well-developed chiasmus in biblical law.1 Towards the end of the paper I speculate on some …

Qualitative Observations Of Successful Spawning By Two Species Of Small-Bodied Minnows Following Pit Tagging, Casey A. Pennock, Lindsey A. Bruckerhoff Apr 2020

Qualitative Observations Of Successful Spawning By Two Species Of Small-Bodied Minnows Following Pit Tagging, Casey A. Pennock, Lindsey A. Bruckerhoff

Western North American Naturalist

PIT tags are a common tool used to identify and track movements of fishes. Although technological advances facilitated the use of PIT tags across a wide range of fish body sizes, we do not yet fully understand the effects of PIT tagging on basic aspects of many species’ life histories (e.g., survival, spawning success, or reproductive output). We observed 2 small-bodied fishes, Red Shiner (Cyprinella lutrensis) and Bluntnose Minnow (Pimephales notatus), achieve successful spawns after PIT tagging. Age-0 fish of both species were observed in multiple experimental stream units during an outdoor mesocosm study in which …

Peripheral Dopamine 2 Receptors Both Modulate Central Dopamine Release And Adopt In A Similar Manner To That Of Central Dopamine 2 Receptors, J. Daniel Obray

Theses and Dissertations

Alcohol use disorder is a debilitating disorder affecting nearly 5% of people in the United States. Despite the prevalence of alcohol use disorder few affected individuals seek treatment and of those who do many will relapse. This highlights a need to develop new treatments for alcohol use disorder that are both more accessible and more effective. This dissertation characterizes a novel pathway involved in ethanol enhancement of dopamine levels in the nucleus accumbens as well as investigating alterations in dopamine 2 receptor expression and function following an acute dose of ethanol. This was done by using microdialysis to measure dopamine …

In Vivo Silicon Lance Array Transfection Of Plant Cells, Taylor Andrew Brown Apr 2020

In Vivo Silicon Lance Array Transfection Of Plant Cells, Taylor Andrew Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Arrays of silicon lances were made using photolithographic and STS DRIE Bosch techniques. Arrays consist of a 10 mm square grid pattern of lances measuring 100 m tall and having a 3 mm diameter, each lance being spaced 30 mm apart. The tips of lances are pointed, allowing easier penetration through plant cell walls. A nanoinjector device was also made to accept the silicon lance arrays and perform nanoinjections. A nanoinjection consisted of 2 silicon lance arrays, with lances oriented towards each other, being moved into and out of a plant cotyledon placed between them. Prior to the nanoinjection, polar …

The Role Of Tributaries In Structuring Mussel Assemblages, Cassie M. Vaughan, Marsha G. Williams, Neil B. Ford, Lance R. Williams Apr 2020

The Role Of Tributaries In Structuring Mussel Assemblages, Cassie M. Vaughan, Marsha G. Williams, Neil B. Ford, Lance R. Williams

Open Water Journal

The influence of tributaries on mussel assemblages of the river mainstem are poorly understood. This paper aims to understand differences in mussel habitat associations between tributaries and the Neches River mainstem and if the mussel assemblages are nested in tributaries. During the months June through October in 2016, 28 tributaries and 22 mainstem sites were surveyed in the Neches River using tactile time search. A total of 3,620 individuals were collected, of which 44.5% were collected from tributaries. However, only eight of the 28 tributaries contained mussels, while every mainstem site sampled had mussels. Entrenchment ratio and sinuosity appear to …

Stemors: A Stochastic Eco-Hydrological Model For Optimal Reservoir Sizing, Aristotelis Koskinas, Tegos Aristoteles Dr.

Open Water Journal

Dams design and their operation cause strong environmental alteration and therefore a long-term debate is ongoing for the scale of these projects. At the same time, the concept of Environmental Flow Assessment (EFA) is a crucial element of modified ecosystems featuring large infrastructure such as dams and reservoirs for mitigating potential environmental degradation while they operate. Nowadays, integrated scientific frameworks are required to quantify the risks caused by large infrastructure. Through the use of stochastic analysis, it is possible to quantify these uncertainties, and present a solution that incorporates long-term persistence and environmental sustainability into a balanced reservoir simulation model. …

This study explores and documents the farmers’ practices of innovative approaches to fresh water storage and uses in the agriculture and irrigation in the coastal regions of Bangladesh. The study was mostly qualitative in nature but some quantitative primary data were collected based on the study objectives. Primary data were collected through in-depth individual interviews, group discussions, focused group discussions and key informant interviews. The data collection …

Defending "The Principle": Orson Pratt And The Rhetoric Of Plural Marriage, Jake D. Simmonds Apr 2020

Defending "The Principle": Orson Pratt And The Rhetoric Of Plural Marriage, Jake D. Simmonds

Theses and Dissertations

In 1852, the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made the pivotal decision to publicize the doctrine and practice of plural marriage—something they had worked to keep out of the public eye for years. This decision came in response to federal and social pressures. They quickly moved to announce and defend plural marriage among Church members as well as broader society, including those in the federal government. Orson Pratt was chosen by Brigham Young to be the face and the voice of the Church concerning plural marriage, both in Salt Lake City among members and in …

Fairy Tales En Pointe: Fairy Brides, Ballerinas, And Ballets That Made The Tale, Jacqueline Nichole Smith Apr 2020

Fairy Tales En Pointe: Fairy Brides, Ballerinas, And Ballets That Made The Tale, Jacqueline Nichole Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between ballet and fairy tale is by no means a new or unique discovery—to either dance history or literary studies. However, aside from relatively brief mentions of ballets as examples of fairy-tale adaptation, ballet's relevance to fairy-tale studies has been somewhat undervalued. While scholars often relegate ballet to a smaller part in fairy tale's influence through the performing arts, fairy-tale ballet deserves to have its own, independent academic conversation because ballet contributes uniquely to both fairy-tale history and canon. Ballet can be credited with both giving new life to an old tale and creating a brand new one …

Woman Seeking Mother: The Heroine’S Journey In Waslala By Gioconda Belli, Karisa Saori Shiraki Apr 2020

Woman Seeking Mother: The Heroine’S Journey In Waslala By Gioconda Belli, Karisa Saori Shiraki

Theses and Dissertations

Motherhood and maternity are common themes in Nicaraguan author Gioconda Belli’s (1948–) writings, but in Waslala (2006) her exploration of the mother figure dives further into what a relationship with such a figure provides. Through a development narrative, parallel to that of female Bildungsroman and quest-romance, the protagonist, Melisandra, grows in maternal history and culture in her search for mother. This thesis uses the theories of Carol Christ, Dana Heller, Joseph Campbell and others to see Melisandra’s odyssey through the lens of a quest narrative. Along this journey, two maternal figures play an important role in preparing her for her …

Long-Term Opiate-Induced Adaptations In Lateral Paracapsular Neurons Of The Basolateral Amygdala, Sara Jane Werner Apr 2020

Long-Term Opiate-Induced Adaptations In Lateral Paracapsular Neurons Of The Basolateral Amygdala, Sara Jane Werner

Theses and Dissertations

Increases in basolateral amygdala (BLA) activity drive avoidance-seeking behavior that may be associated with stress induced drug seeking. Activity of BLA pyramidal neurons is regulated by local and paracapsular gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) interneurons. The lateral paracapsular interneurons (LPCs) border the external capsule, receive dense cortical/thalamic input and provide feed-forward inhibition onto BLA principle neurons. The GABAergic LPCs also express high concentrations of g-protein coupled µ-opioid receptors (MORs). Therefore, the effects of opiates on LPC activity and local GABA release were examined. Fluorescently double labeled LPCs were observed in glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) 65-mcherry/GAD67-green fluorescent protein (GFP) transgenic mice. Whole-cell electrophysiology …

Development Of A Parameterized Model Of Transverse Maize (Zea Maysl.) Stalk Morphology, Ryan A. Larson Apr 2020

Development Of A Parameterized Model Of Transverse Maize (Zea Maysl.) Stalk Morphology, Ryan A. Larson

Theses and Dissertations

Stalk lodging, or failure of the stalk structure, presents a serious problem in the production of maize (Zea mays L.). Lodged stalks negatively impact crop yields by inhibiting further grain growth and often prevent the harvest of the grain. Addressing this problem requires the development of new maize hybrids that exhibit enhanced lodging resistance, which in turn requires an understanding of the parameters that influence lodging resistance. Current methods make use of specimen-specific geometry and material properties, but these methods have limited ability to examine geometric effects and can require excessive time. A parameterized model of the maize stalk has …

The Way To A Man’S Heart Is Through His Stomach: Male Consumption And Female Social Edibility In Laços De Família By Clarice Lispector, Marissa D. Jensen Apr 2020

The Way To A Man’S Heart Is Through His Stomach: Male Consumption And Female Social Edibility In Laços De Família By Clarice Lispector, Marissa D. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Critics of Clarice Lispector often identify feminist themes relating to voice, gender, and the male gaze in her creative work. Lispector’s collection of short stories Laços de família demonstrates the way patriarchal society sets limits on the identity of women. Laura Mulvey’s concept of “the male gaze” provides a useful tool for understanding how men marginalize, objectify, and subordinate women through visual regimes of control, yet Mulvey’s concept does not fully encapsulate the scope of male oppression explored in Laços de família. In fact, Lispector draws upon a variety of senses and metaphors related to consumption through a mode I …

Mnemonic Discrimination: Correcting False Memories And Detecting Changes In Time, Nathan M. Muncy Apr 2020

Mnemonic Discrimination: Correcting False Memories And Detecting Changes In Time, Nathan M. Muncy

Theses and Dissertations

Two projects are presented in this dissertation. First, we investigated the impact of false memories on the original trace and whether recovery of the original is possible. Second, we tested whether mnemonic discrimination for temporal duration is possible. Both projects incorporated fMRI techniques in order to implicate any potential neural correlates of these memory behaviors. Project One. To elicit false memories and study a potential recovery therefrom, thirty-five healthy, young adults performed multiple recognition memory tests where they were induced to make errors in a first test and then participants were tested again in a surprise, second test. These two …

An Open-Source Web-Application For Regional Analysis Of Grace Groundwater Data And Engaging Stakeholders In Groundwater Management, Travis Clinton Mcstraw Apr 2020

An Open-Source Web-Application For Regional Analysis Of Grace Groundwater Data And Engaging Stakeholders In Groundwater Management, Travis Clinton Mcstraw

Theses and Dissertations

Since 2002, NASA's GRACE Satellite mission has allowed scientists of various disciplines to analyze and map the changes in Earth's total water storage on a global scale. Although the raw data is available to the public, the process of viewing, manipulating, and analyzing the GRACE data can be difficult for those without strong technological backgrounds in programming or geospatial software. This is particularly true for water managers in developing countries, where GRACE data could be a valuable asset for sustainable water resource management. To address this problem, I have a developed a utility for subsetting GRACE data to particular regions …

Rewriting "Plumb Crazy Indian Women": Reframing Mental Illness As Cultural Power In Linda Hogan's Solar Storms, Hannah Dian Detavis Apr 2020

Rewriting "Plumb Crazy Indian Women": Reframing Mental Illness As Cultural Power In Linda Hogan's Solar Storms, Hannah Dian Detavis

Theses and Dissertations

Since the earliest published American narratives, writers and subsequent Western clinicians alike have often mislabeled Indigenous behaviors, especially the behaviors of Indigenous women, as insanity. And yet, as Pemina Yellow Bird (Three Affiliated Tribes) explains, "Native peoples generally do not have a notion of "insane" or "mentally ill." (4). Instead, Indigenous peoples often discuss mental health in their communities through storytelling. As but one example of the ways that cultural narratives work to reclaim Indigenous understandings of mental health, this paper analyzes how the writings of Chickasaw author Linda Hogan challenge non-Indigenous understandings of mental health as a gendered phenomenon …

Aerodynamic Measurement Stability During Rabbit Versus Pig Benchtop Phonation, Megan Caroline Hoggan Apr 2020

Aerodynamic Measurement Stability During Rabbit Versus Pig Benchtop Phonation, Megan Caroline Hoggan

Theses and Dissertations

Combination corticosteroid inhalers are the primary treatment option for long-term pulmonary disorders including asthma, persistent bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Common side effects of these medications are xerostomia in the mouth and throat, hoarseness, and soreness in the oropharynx. Research indicates that a large percentage of the inhaler particles are deposited onto laryngeal tissue, leaving an alteration of laryngeal mucosal properties. As the first stage in a long-term project, this thesis addresses the need for baseline phonatory data that will lay groundwork for quantifying inhaler-induced phonatory changes. Excised larynx research is a powerful tool for assessing aerodynamic alterations that …

Activity Patterns And Foraging Behavior Of American Pikas (Ochotona Princeps) Differ Between Craters Of The Moon And Alpine Talus In Idaho, Meghan J. Camp, Lisa A. Shipley, Johanna Varner, Brooklyn D. Waterhouse Apr 2020

Waterhouse

Western North American Naturalist

Range contractions in the Great Basin over the last century suggest that American pikas (Ochotona princeps) might be highly sensitive to climate change. However, documentation of pikas residing at relatively warm, low-elevation sites has recently shed new light on the possible resilience of pika populations to warmer ambient conditions when they have access to cooler microhabitats for thermoregulation. To provide insight into the possible behavioral mechanisms of adaptation to warmer habitats, we investigated activity patterns, foraging behavior, and space use of a population of pikas living in an atypical, warmer habitat at Craters of the Moon National Monument …

"Fidelity And Ripeness": The Telos Of Milton's Mature Christian Learners, Steven Mckay Hansen Apr 2020

"Fidelity And Ripeness": The Telos Of Milton's Mature Christian Learners, Steven Mckay Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, I argue that Milton envisions a long view of education in which continual encounters with evil allow created beings to prove themselves and gradually approach a state like God’s—a state marked by constant righteous habits and by a dilation of subjective time with increased access to past and future knowledge. I discuss the roles of opposition in Miltonic education, illustrating how non-examples may result in apophatic revelation about the divine. Acts of rebellion in Paradise Lost demonstrate, however, that the timetable for introducing opposition proves complex, since created beings, the devil among them, act on their own …

A Comparison Of Chikungunya Virus Infection, Dissemination, And Cytokine Induction In Human And Murine Macrophages And Characterization Of Rag2-/-Γc-/- Mice As An Animal Model To Study Neurotropic Chikungunya Disease, Israel Guerrero Apr 2020

A Comparison Of Chikungunya Virus Infection, Dissemination, And Cytokine Induction In Human And Murine Macrophages And Characterization Of Rag2-/-Γc-/- Mice As An Animal Model To Study Neurotropic Chikungunya Disease, Israel Guerrero

Theses and Dissertations

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is classified as an alphavirus in the Togaviridae family. This virus is known to rely on Aedes arthropod vectors for its dissemination. Human infection is characterized by rash, high fever, and severe chronic polyarthritis that can last for years. Recently, efforts in developing animal models have been made in an attempt to better understand CHIKV pathogenesis. CHIKV infection starts with a 7 to 10 day long febrile acute phase, in which most of the symptoms occur (rash, fever, and incapacitating pain in joints and muscle). Once the immune system clears most of the viral infection, a chronic …
