The Effects Of Distracting Background Audio On Speech Production, Camille Margaret Cowley Jun 2020

The Effects Of Distracting Background Audio On Speech Production, Camille Margaret Cowley

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined changes in speech production when distracting background audio is present. Forty typically speaking adults completed a repetitive sentence reading task in the presence of 5 different audio conditions (pink noise, movie dialogue, heated debate, classical music, and contemporary music) and a silent condition. Acoustic parameters measured during the study included vowel space area (VSA), vowel articulation index (VAI), formant transition extent, formant transition rate, and diphthong duration for /ɑɪ/ and /ɑʊ/. It was hypothesized that there would be significant increases in vowel space area and vowel articulation index as well as an increase in formant transition measures …

A Corpus-Based Study Of The Gender Assignment Of Nominal Anglicisms In Brazilian Portuguese, Taryn Marie Skahill Jun 2020

A Corpus-Based Study Of The Gender Assignment Of Nominal Anglicisms In Brazilian Portuguese, Taryn Marie Skahill

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to analyze the variability of gender assignment to nominal anglicisms in Brazilian Portuguese and to identify how the orthography of English loanwords and their establishment in the language influences such variation. This study also seeks to identify the most important factors that govern such gender assignment. The data were gathered from two Portuguese corpora, one consisting of more formal and edited language (Corpus do Português, News on the Web) and the other consisting of less formal and unaltered language, such as blog posts (Corpus do Português, Web/Dialects). Forty anglicisms were analyzed in order to …

A Systems-Level Approach To The Design, Evaluation, And Optimization Of Electrified Transportation Networks Using Agent-Based Modeling, Landon Clark Willey Jun 2020

A Systems-Level Approach To The Design, Evaluation, And Optimization Of Electrified Transportation Networks Using Agent-Based Modeling, Landon Clark Willey

Theses and Dissertations

Rising concerns related to the effects of traffic congestion have led to the search for alternative transportation solutions. Advances in battery technology have resulted in an increase of electric vehicles (EVs), which serve to reduce the impact of many of the negative consequences of congestion, including pollution and the cost of wasted fuel. Furthermore, the energy-efficiency and quiet operation of electric motors have made feasible concepts such as Urban Air Mobility (UAM), in which electric aircraft transport passengers in dense urban areas prone to severe traffic slowdowns. Electrified transportation may be the solution needed to combat urban gridlock, but many …

Power Struggles: Sovereignty And The Nonhuman In South Africa, Taelin Wilford Jun 2020

Power Struggles: Sovereignty And The Nonhuman In South Africa, Taelin Wilford

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis uses the theoretical backbone of Jacques Derrida’s The Beast and the Sovereign to look at the theme of the nonhuman in connection with sovereignty in three novels representing three major time periods in South Africa. Zakes Mda’s The Heart of Redness uses the nonhuman in the form of the supernatural to reveal the limits of sovereignty in Colonial South Africa. J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace makes use of the nonhuman in the form of animals to talk about the transient nature of sovereignty in post-Apartheid South Africa. Lauren Beukes’ Zoo City is set in an alternate future South Africa and …

Developmental Predictors Of Adolescent Alcohol Intake: A Nonhuman Primate Model, Elizabeth Katherine Wood Jun 2020

Developmental Predictors Of Adolescent Alcohol Intake: A Nonhuman Primate Model, Elizabeth Katherine Wood

Theses and Dissertations

Alcohol abuse is one of the costliest human health problems in the United States. Studies assessing the etiology of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) in adulthood suggest that these disorders are predicted by trait-like differences, such as low or impaired central serotonin or temperamental anxiety. Few studies, however, have assessed neonatal, infant, and adolescent characteristics that lead to alcohol abuse in adolescence. Given that the expression of AUDs is rooted in biological processes, the set of studies presented in this work investigate the early origins of excessive alcohol use in adolescence, with an overall goal of identifying risk factors that may …

Reproductive Failure Predicts Intracolony Dispersal Of Female Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs (Cynomys Ludovicianus) In A Northern Population, Jillian M. Kusch, Colleen C. Matzke, Jeffrey E. Lane Jun 2020

Reproductive Failure Predicts Intracolony Dispersal Of Female Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs (Cynomys Ludovicianus) In A Northern Population, Jillian M. Kusch, Colleen C. Matzke, Jeffrey E. Lane

Western North American Naturalist

Dispersal in mammals is typically male-biased and occurs primarily in sexually immature individuals. These dispersal characteristics are especially true for ground-dwelling sciurids, such as black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus), that have polygynous breeding systems, with dispersing males and philopatric females. Prairie dogs are small, colonial rodents found in patches throughout the Great Plains of North America. Previous literature reports that females exist in philopatric units called coteries, typically with one unrelated breeding male. Yearling males disperse from their natal coterie in order to form their own coteries. We observed 1450 prairie dogs over 3 consecutive years in one …

Distribution And Population Structure Of Ambystoma Altamirani From The Llano De Lobos, State Of México, Mexico, Zeltzin A. Villanueva Camacho, Geoffrey R. Smith, Raymundo Montoya Ayala, Julio A. Lemos-Espinal

Western North American Naturalist

Ambystoma altamirani is an endangered salamander found in high mountain streams in the vicinity of México City, and its populations might be threatened by urban growth. Here we report our research on a previously unstudied population of A. altamirani at the Llano de Lobos in the Sierra de las Cruces. The study ran from September 2018 to September 2019. The number of observed individuals was relatively constant across months. The only months when we observed gilled adults were February and July, and the only months when we saw juveniles without gills were January, February, and August, suggesting that the transformation …

First Recorded Observations Of Conspecific Egg And Nestling Consumption In Common Ravens (Corvus Corax), Joseph L. Atkinson, Peter S. Coates, Brianne E. Brussee, David J. Delehanty Jun 2020

First Recorded Observations Of Conspecific Egg And Nestling Consumption In Common Ravens (Corvus Corax), Joseph L. Atkinson, Peter S. Coates, Brianne E. Brussee, David J. Delehanty

Western North American Naturalist

We observed cannibalism, the act of consuming a conspecific, of eggs and nestlings by Common Ravens (Corvus corax; hereafter “raven”) by video-monitoring nests in Nevada and California. Specifically, within the sagebrush steppe of Nevada, adult ravens killed and consumed raven chicks from an active nest. Additionally, on the coast of California, we observed adult ravens consume inviable eggs from their own nest following full-term incubation. To our knowledge, these observations represent the first documented cannibalistic behavior by ravens.

Development Of A 3d Computational Vocal Fold Model Optimization Tool, Austin C. Vaterlaus Jun 2020

Development Of A 3d Computational Vocal Fold Model Optimization Tool, Austin C. Vaterlaus

Theses and Dissertations

One of the primary objectives of voice research is to better understand the biomechanics of voice production and how changes in properties of the vocal folds (VFs) affect voice ability and quality. Synthetic VF models provide a way to observe how changes in geometry and material property affect voice biomechanics. This thesis seeks to evaluate an approach of using a genetic algorithm to design synthetic VF models in three ways: first, through the development of a computationally cost-effective 3D vocal fold model; second, by creating and optimizing a variation of this model; and third, by validating the approach. To reduce …

Current Distribution Of The California Vole (Microtus Californicus) In Baja California, Mexico, Alan Harper, Anny Peralta-García, Jorge H. Valdez-Villavicencio, Scott Tremor, Chris J. Conroy

Western North American Naturalist

We revisited 26 of the 28 known collection sites for the California vole, Microtus californicus, in Baja California, Mexico. With live trapping, we were able to confirm the continued presence of the vole at 7 of these sites, which include all 3 of the subspecies endemic to Baja California. At 14 of these sites, no viable habitat was found. These 14 sites included all known occurrences of M. californicus sanctidiegi in Baja California. Based on capture numbers or lack of habitat, population size may be drastically reduced at all sites except one. Effective conservation actions are required for recovery …

The Attributive Suffix In Pastaza Kichwa, Barrett Wilson Hamp Jun 2020

The Attributive Suffix In Pastaza Kichwa, Barrett Wilson Hamp

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a corpus-based description of the attributive suffix -k in Pastaza Kichwa, a Quechuan language spoken in lowland Amazonian Ecuador. The goal of this work is, first, to describe the behaviors, characteristics, and functions of the suffix using data from the Corpus of Pastaza Kichwa (Rice 2018a), and second, to offer a typological analysis of these behaviors in order to identify the most appropriate classification for the suffix. The suffix has previously been described as a nominalizer (Nuckolls & Swanson, forthcoming), and the equivalent suffix in other Quechuan varieties has been described as an agentive nominal relativizer (Weber …

Identifying High-Potential Work Areas In Engineering For Global Development: Linking Industry Sectors To The Human Development Index, Daniel Oliver Smith Jun 2020

Identifying High-Potential Work Areas In Engineering For Global Development: Linking Industry Sectors To The Human Development Index, Daniel Oliver Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Those working in Engineering for Global Development seek to improve the conditions in developing countries. A common metric for understanding the development state of a given country is the Human Development Index (HDI), which focuses on three dimensions: health, education, and income. An engineer’s expertise does not always align with any of those dimensions directly, while they still hope to perform impactful work for human development. To discover other areas of expertise that are highly associated with the HDI, correlations and variable selection were performed between all World Development Indicators and the HDI. The resultant associations are presented according to …

Two Early Nineteenth Century Overseas Emigrants From Näfels, Kanton Glarus, Switzerland: Walter Marianus Hauser And The Colony At Red River, Canada, Susanne Peter-Kubli

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Walter Marianus Hauser (1777-1850) was a member of Näfels’ elite society that had gained its wealth and prestige from the foreign military service of Swiss and occupied important public offices in the Canton. At the start of the nineteenth century, that group increasingly lost its importance. While its social prestige endured and its members such as the von Müller, von Bachmann, and von Hauser continued to use their titles of nobility, their economic base, that is highly paid officer positions in foreign military service, had disappeared.

From Näfels To The United States: Emigrant Portraits From A Town In Switzerland’S Canton Glarus, Susanne Peter-Kubli

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Only a few, and mainly quite confusing, details are available about Feldmann’s life in Näfels and also about the date of his emigration. It derives, in part, from the fact that two people by the same name were living in Näfels. Both were butchers by profession and both had married women by the last name Müller. Checking the marriage and baptismal records of Näfels finally clarified the matter.

A Study Of The Anthropogenic Impact In Farmington Bay Through Isotopic And Elemental Analysis, Nathan Vaun Gunnell Jun 2020

A Study Of The Anthropogenic Impact In Farmington Bay Through Isotopic And Elemental Analysis, Nathan Vaun Gunnell

Theses and Dissertations

The influence of human activity on surrounding environments is an important field of research. With respect to aquatic settings, lacustrine deposits provide excellent proxies of environmental change since the sediment accumulates at a relatively constant rate, recording environmental change. This study employs isotopic, mineral, and chemical records from Farmington Bay freeze cores, in particular δ13C, δ15N, and 210Pb isotopes as well as phosphorus level fluctuation and trace metal analysis. In particular, 210Pb isotopes permit estimation of the age of sediment with depth and δ15N, δ13C, and concentration of P provides a record of changing nutrient sources and level of eutrophication. …

"The World Without A Self": Non-Being And Ontological Leveling In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, Morgan Ashley Lewis Jun 2020

"The World Without A Self": Non-Being And Ontological Leveling In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, Morgan Ashley Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

Virginia Woolf is perhaps best known for her explorations and depictions of human consciousness. However, more contemporary science reveals that consciousness is only a small part of what constitutes our brain function. Rather, there are a dual functions within the human brain: consciousness and cognition. This nonconscious cognition is what allows us to see patterns, to make judgements, and to act reflexively, while consciousness is the function that shapes our individual identity and the story we tell about ourselves. Though previous studies have focused primarily on Woolf's representations of consciousness in her short stories and novels, there is much left …

Dyslexia Beyond The Word: An Ecological Study Of Specific Reading Disorder, Benjamin T. Carter Jun 2020

Dyslexia Beyond The Word: An Ecological Study Of Specific Reading Disorder, Benjamin T. Carter

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation discusses the effects of dyslexia on reading behavior and cognition. It does so by first outlining the overall incidence of dyslexia, providing current definitions, giving a history of scientific inquiry and discussing relevant contemporary research. Thirteen different analyses are then discussed (ten a priori and three post-hoc). Individuals with dyslexia were found to have increased fixation duration, first run dwell time, total dwell time, and refixation probability. The dyslexia group was also highly sensitive to lexical predictability. Within the reading network, the BOLD response was depressed in dyslexia during reading in the following regions: the left medial and …

Morphometric Response Of Galaxias Maculatus (Jenyns) To Lake Colonization In Chile, Margaret Mercer, Peter C. Searle, Roberto Cifuentes, Evelyn Habit, Mark C. Belk

Faculty Publications

Body and head shape in fish responds to environmental factors such as water flow rate, food sources, and niche availability. However, the way in which fish respond to these environmental factors varies. In Central Chile, multiple river and lake systems along the coast provide an ideal study site to investigate these types of shape changes. We use geometric morphometrics to characterize shape differences in Galaxias maculatus (Jenyns) between river and lake populations. Lake fish converge on a shape with a more fusiform body, narrower head, and larger eyes, while river fish have a more robust body, rounder head, and smaller …

Creating Identity In The Face Of The Other: A Levinian Reading Of Luis Vélez De Guevara's La Serrana De La Vera, Elizabeth Anne Jensen May 2020

Creating Identity In The Face Of The Other: A Levinian Reading Of Luis Vélez De Guevara's La Serrana De La Vera, Elizabeth Anne Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Among the works of theater of the Spanish Golden Age which feature a mujer varonil, Luis Vélez de Guevara's play, La serrana de la Vera (1613), is particularly provocative. The intensity and ambiguity of the dual nature of its female protagonist, Gila, has been the subject of much recent scholarly investigation. The staging of the play lends itself to a Levinian reading, a new approach to this particular text and theater of the Golden Age in general. Emmanuel Levinas moves beyond metaphysics, phenomenology and intentionality to posit ethics as first philosophy. Levinas explains that the face of the Other is …

A Pedagogy Of Constraints: How Self-Imposed Limitations Influence Art-Making And Teaching, Emmalee Glauser Powell May 2020

A Pedagogy Of Constraints: How Self-Imposed Limitations Influence Art-Making And Teaching, Emmalee Glauser Powell

Trading Up: Exchanging Our Data For A Better Life, Nathan Turner May 2020

Trading Up: Exchanging Our Data For A Better Life, Nathan Turner

Marriott Student Review

We live in a data-driven economy. Many people feel like consumers are on the losing end of an economic data-battle with tech giants, but this is simply not true; our data can drive innovation. That’s right—personal data collected from you and me can influence new technologies that will improve our lives. This should excite us, but our fear of losing data privacy can quell our excitement for progress and even restrict innovation. Our quality of life has already begun to improve through data driven innovation, and technological progress is not slowing down. If we let our fear of losing data …

"Defensive Flippancy": Play, Disorientation, And Moral Action In Brian Friel's The Freedom Of The City, Hannah Brooke Azar

Theses and Dissertations

When Brian Friel’s play The Freedom of the City premiered in 1973, just a year after the events of Bloody Sunday, it was met with harsh criticism and called a work of propaganda. In the play, three peaceful protestors flee a civil rights demonstration turned violent and end up trapped inside the Guildhall in Derry, Northern Ireland. By the end of the play, they are shot dead. These three protestors, disoriented by violence as well as the aftereffects of life-long poverty, on the surface are not emblems of morality. However, this thesis employs Ami Harbin’s theorization of disorientation and moral …

Silicone 3d Printing Processes For Fabricating Synthetic, Self-Oscillating Vocal Fold Models, Taylor Eugene Greenwood May 2020

Silicone 3d Printing Processes For Fabricating Synthetic, Self-Oscillating Vocal Fold Models, Taylor Eugene Greenwood

Theses and Dissertations

Synthetic, self-oscillating vocal fold (VF) models are physical models whose life-like vibration is induced and perpetuated by fluid flow. Self-oscillating VF models, which are often fabricated life-size from soft silicone elastomers, are used to study various aspects of voice biomechanics. Despite their many advantages, the development and use of self-oscillating VF models is limited by the casting process used to fabricate the models. Consequently, this thesis focuses on the development of 3D printing processes for fabricating silicone VF models. A literature review is first presented which describes three types of material extrusion 3D printing processes for silicone elastomers, namely direct …

At The Intersection Of Scribal Training And Theological Profundity: Chiasm As An Editorial Technique In The Primeval History And Deuteronomy, Bernard M. Levinson

BYU Studies

There can be little doubt that ancient Near Eastern scribes, including those in ancient Israel, were well-trained in a wide range of technical devices associated with the composition, copying, transmission, editing, collation, revision, reworking, and interpretation of texts.1 My focus in the present study will be on one of the most interesting of these devices, the literary chiasm, in which textual content is ordered in an ABC::CʹBʹAʹ chiastic, or “x-shaped,” pattern. In many cases, once this pattern is recognized within a chapter or literary unit, an ostensibly haphazard or difficult to follow textual sequence gains a sense of order, as …
