David Björling Becomes A Singer: Usa, Sweden And Vienna 1899-1908, Harald Henrysson
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
In all of its generations the singing Björling family has had close connections with the U.S. It was here it began —when David Björling got the education without which he might not have become a singer and thus Jussi, if he had been born, would have had quite a different future. Very little has been known about David’s first period in America, but this article, based on my presentation at the JBS-USA Salt Lake City conference, is an attempt to fill in that gap, as far as sources permit, and add something about his further education.

Diet Of The Golden Eagle During The Breeding Season In Northwestern Chihuahua, Mexico, Isaac Morales-Yañez, Ricardo Rodríguez-Estrella, Ana Bertha Gatica-Colima
Diet Of The Golden Eagle During The Breeding Season In Northwestern Chihuahua, Mexico, Isaac Morales-Yañez, Ricardo Rodríguez-Estrella, Ana Bertha Gatica-Colima
Western North American Naturalist
The diet of the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) was studied in 4 territories in northwestern Chihuahua, México, during the breeding season. Prey remains and pellets were collected from 4 nests during 2014, 2015, and 2016. We identified 12 vertebrate species. Black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) were the most important prey remains in terms of frequency (72%) and ingested biomass (86%). We estimated mean prey size to be 1291 g (SE = 3364), indicating that Golden Eagles prey on medium-sized animals (e.g., lagomorphs). The main threats to Golden Eagles are connected to habitat loss and habitat fragmentation, but …
Nelson Eddy, Universal Baritone, James Drake
Nelson Eddy, Universal Baritone, James Drake
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
“This may sound egotistical on my part,” said long-time Philadelphia music critic Max de Schauensee in a 1977 interview I conducted with him, “but often I have found myself lecturing friends and colleagues that the Nelson Eddy they know from movie screens as a matinee idol, is a genuine opera singer. I know so because I saw him in Aida, Bohème, Pagliacci, both as Silvio and Tonio, and Tannhäuser.” As the astute De Schauensee was quick to point out, Nelson Eddy had a repertoire of 28 operas during his tenure with the Philadelphia Civic Opera Company, …
Record Time: Walter Price Traces The Background Of Rca’S Legendary 1956 Recording Of La Bohème, Walter Price
Record Time: Walter Price Traces The Background Of Rca’S Legendary 1956 Recording Of La Bohème, Walter Price
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
In the spring of 1956, Andrew Schulhof, Thomas Beecham’s manager, had an idea for which record aficionados must continually give thanks. The British conductor was scheduled to be in New York while his then favorite soprano, Victoria De Los Angeles, and Jussi Bjoerling were available. Why not put a cast together and record La Bohème for RCA Victor? Those were the days when sales domination of the international music market gave America unprecedented power.
Indigenous Population Displacement In Indonesia, Katelyn Covey
Indigenous Population Displacement In Indonesia, Katelyn Covey
Ballard Brief
Indigenous peoples in Indonesia continue to be displaced from their customary lands at high rates, with lands turned over to government and corporate entities. This continued displacement is due to legal barriers to securing recognition as indigenous peoples and indigenous land, deforestation and land degradation. and gaps between the implementation of laws and actual practices. Consequences for indigenous peoples include physical. social. economic. and political marginalization. a nutrition transition away from traditional food systems. and disconnection to traditional cultural. spiritual. and linguistic practices. Some possible alleviations to this issue include enacting laws and policies to ensure indigenous land tenure. as …
Illegal Wildlife Trade In China, Anna Mcconkie
Illegal Wildlife Trade In China, Anna Mcconkie
Ballard Brief
International wildlife trafficking has become a low-risk. high-return illegal trade. China is a top demand country for wildlife products, and the current level of demand is both detrimental and unsustainable. Demand for wildlife in traditional Chinese medicine and as status symbols and investments, high profitability for supplying parties, complex and corrupt trafficking structures, and ineffective government policies and enforcement all contribute to the problem of wildlife trafficking. In addition to biodiversity loss, illegal wildlife trafficking provides funding for militant groups and introduces zoonotic diseases. One way to reduce demand is through targeted consumer campaigns that educate the public on problems …

Hedgehogs And Hyenas: Peculiar Animals Of Ancient Egypt, Elliotte Thurtle
Studia Antiqua
This essay discusses archeological information gained from the study of Egyptian artifacts, specifically focused on hedgehogs and hyenas. The aim of this paper is to expand our understanding of these animals in the day-to-day lives of Egyptians from this period, and further clarify the symbolism that they hold. Understanding the importance of less common animals within ancient Egyptian religion and symbolism is vital to understanding how the average person lived and interacted with the world around them.
Sacred Writing And Magic Metal: The High Priest's Holy Crown As A Protective Amulet, Abigail Booth
Sacred Writing And Magic Metal: The High Priest's Holy Crown As A Protective Amulet, Abigail Booth
Studia Antiqua
What forces, practices, rituals, or objects worked to safeguard the ancient Israelite sanctuary against evil and harm? Archaeological and textual evidence suggests that the high priest’s golden crown may have been an apotropaic amulet worn to protect the high priest and the holy space. Magical practices described in the Bible are illuminated by the presence of apotropaic ritual and amulets in wider Near Eastern society. Metallic amulets such as those found at Ketef Hinnom were utilized to protect the wearer in the name of the deity. In inscriptions, sacred writing invoked the name of YHWH to guard a sanctuary. The …
Active Trumpeter Swan Nest On An Active Muskrat Lodge, Paige C. Miller, David J. Delehanty
Active Trumpeter Swan Nest On An Active Muskrat Lodge, Paige C. Miller, David J. Delehanty
Western North American Naturalist
We observed Trumpeter Swans (Cygnus buccinator) nesting on top of an active muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) lodge, indicating simultaneous breeding uses of a constructed vegetation mound not previously recorded in the literature. Specifically, within the Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Montana, we observed 4 eggs in an actively tended Trumpeter Swan nest, while underneath the swan nest bowl was a muskrat nursery occupied by 3 neonate muskrats. Swans are known to use abandoned muskrat lodges as nest foundations, but not active lodges. Our observations point to a close association between breeding muskrats and Trumpeter …
Time Required For Brown Bears To Capture And Consume Pacific Salmon, Thomas P. Quinn
Time Required For Brown Bears To Capture And Consume Pacific Salmon, Thomas P. Quinn
Western North American Naturalist
Detection, pursuit, capture, and consumption of prey by predators may be time consuming or not, depending on predators and prey, and this time allocation affects other aspects of predator ecology. Pacific salmon contribute substantially to coastal brown bear (Ursus arctos) diets, with implications for predators, prey, and their ecosystem. Brown bears were observed capturing sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) at Mikfik Creek, Alaska, to determine capture and consumption rates. Bears averaged 3:00 min (SD = 5:24) to capture and 2:26 min (SD = 1:33) to completely consume small adult sockeye salmon. These foraging activities thus occupied only …

Contemporary Palestinian archaeology has produced two major threats to traditional interpretations of the history of ancient Israel. Scientific discomfort with the exodus story as an explanation for the sudden population expansion in southern Palestine at the beginning of the Iron Age (c.1200 BCE) has led to a wide variety of theories about how these Israelites could have been drawn from existing populations in the general area. And a glaring mismatch between the biblical glorification of David and Solomon’s “empire” and disparagement of the northern kingdom combined with the archaeological finding that the cities of the northern kingdom were far larger …
Straight White Men's Geosocial App Preferences: Exploring The Effects Of Race, Sean Aaron
Straight White Men's Geosocial App Preferences: Exploring The Effects Of Race, Sean Aaron
Theses and Dissertations
Geosocial apps on mobile phones use location data to introduce many young adults to other people to initiate various types of relationships. This study examined how established racial preferences affect Straight White Men's (SWM) selection decisions of potential partners in a pseudo-geosocial app when controlling for age, attractiveness, and other profile factors of potential matches. A sample comprising exclusively of SWM was selected because historically, this demographic has benefited most from gender and racial inequalities (Thompson, 2009), and they make up the largest portion of people in interracial relationships in the United States (Livingston & Brown, 2017). We found that …
Inflammation And Altered Signaling In Obstetric Pathologies, Ya-Fang Tsai
Inflammation And Altered Signaling In Obstetric Pathologies, Ya-Fang Tsai
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research project was to elucidate the molecular interactions and detail the signaling pathways in obstetric pathologies. This work first seeks to understand inflammation related complications relevant to obstetrics. Prior research in our lab identified the implications of the receptor of advanced glycation end products (RAGE) during inflammatory response in the placenta. Current work identified the presence of DNA double-strand breaks (DNA-DSBs) in inflammation associated pregnancy complications of preeclampsia (PE) and preterm labor (PTL) and demonstrated the positive role of RAGE in repairing the damage. The confluent relevance of disrupted mitochondrial function and inflammation has been recognized …
On The Relationship Of Diabetes And Sleep Apnea: Evolution And Epigenetics, Nancy Wilson
On The Relationship Of Diabetes And Sleep Apnea: Evolution And Epigenetics, Nancy Wilson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis gives an overview of the relationship between diabetes, sleep apnea, obesity, and heart disease. It then addresses evidence that the traditional understanding of this relationship is incomplete or misleading. In the process, there is a brief discussion of the evolutionary rationale for the development and retention of sleep apnea in light of blood sugar dysregulation, as an adaptive mechanism in response to environmental stressors, followed by a brief overview of the general concepts of epigenetics. Finally, this paper presents the results of a literature search on the epigenetic marks and changes in gene expression found in sleep apnea …
The Beneficial Effects Of The Gut-Derived Metabolite Trimethylamine N-Oxide On Functional Β-Cell Mass, Emily Suzanne Krueger
The Beneficial Effects Of The Gut-Derived Metabolite Trimethylamine N-Oxide On Functional Β-Cell Mass, Emily Suzanne Krueger
Theses and Dissertations
Elevated serum levels of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) were first associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) 10 years ago. Research has since defined that serum TMAO accumulation is controlled by the diet-microbiome-liver-kidney axis. Choline related nutrients are consumed in excess during over-nutrition from a Western diet. The resultant elevated serum TMAO is investigated across various chronic metabolic diseases and many tissue types. While TMAO is most clearly linked to CVD mechanisms in vascular tissue, its molecular effects on metabolic tissues are unclear. Here we report the current standing of TMAO research in metabolic disease context across relevant metabolic tissues …
Acoustic Interaction Between A Pair Of Owls And A Wolf, Barbara Marti-Domken, Vicente Palacios, Shannon M. Barber Meyer
Acoustic Interaction Between A Pair Of Owls And A Wolf, Barbara Marti-Domken, Vicente Palacios, Shannon M. Barber Meyer
Western North American Naturalist
During summer 2019, we recorded an apparent vocal interaction, lasting just under 4 min, between a pair of Great Horned Owls (Bubo virginianus) and a gray wolf (Canis lupus) in Yellowstone National Park. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such an acoustic interaction in the scientific literature. The increased use of passive acoustic recorders, which record spontaneous vocalizations emitted by animals over long periods, will allow us to better document and study the importance of such interspecific interactions.
Durante el verano de 2019, grabamos una aparente interacción vocal entre una pareja de búhos …

Forecasting Inundation Extents In The Amazon Basin Using Srh-2d And Hand Based On The Geoglows Ecmwf Streamflow Services, Christopher Hyde Edwards
Theses and Dissertations
Floods are the most impactful natural disasters on earth, and reliable flood warning systems are critical for disaster preparation, mitigation, and response. The GEOGloWS ECMWF Streamflow Services (GESS) provide forecasted streamflow throughout the world. While forecasted discharge is essential to flood warning, forecasted inundation extents are required to understand and predict flood impact. In this research, I sought to expand GESS flood warning potential by generating inundation extents from streamflow forecasts. I compared Height Above Nearest Drainage (HAND), a method beneficial for flood mapping on a watershed scale, to a 2D hydrodynamic model, specifically Sedimentation and River Hydraulics – Two …

Pre-Columbian Cultivation Of Agave Species Through Rock Mulching: Potential For Modern Applications, Hector Genaro Ortiz Cano
Pre-Columbian Cultivation Of Agave Species Through Rock Mulching: Potential For Modern Applications, Hector Genaro Ortiz Cano
Theses and Dissertations
As global temperatures rise, cultivation of C3 and C4 crops in arid and semi-arid regions will face major challenges in producing biomass for billions of people. Conventional agricultural techniques that require copious irrigation will need to be complemented with dryland-farming techniques and drought-tolerant crops, such as those from the Agave genus, which use CAM photosynthesis. In the past and present, humans from arid and semi-arid regions of America have maintained a symbiotic relationship using and cultivating Agave (Agavoideae, Asparagaceae). In pre-Columbian times, Native Americans from arid regions relied on Agave cultivation as a subsistence crop to produce food, medicine, and …

Grazing Rotation On Restored Rangeland As A New Tool For Medusahead Control, Casey Spackman, Clinton A. Stonecipher, Kip E. Panter, Juan J. Villalba
Western North American Naturalist
Intake of medusahead (Taeniatherum caput-medusae (L.) Nevski) by livestock is typically low given the poor nutritional quality of the weed, but utilization may increase through the provision of supplemental nutrients. This study compared cattle that initially grazed on a supplemented pasture (SUP) of established cool-season perennial grasses and forbs to nonsupplemented cattle that grazed only medusahead-infested rangeland (NSUP) in order to determine whether supplemental nutrients could increase use of medusahead. The quality of different forage types in the plant community and grazing events on these forage types were assessed. Supplemented animals grazed medusahead to a greater extent than NSUP …
Monitoring Domestic Sheep Energy Requirements And Habitat Selection On Summer Mountain Range Using Low-Cost Gps Collar Technology, Elizabeth M. Baum
Monitoring Domestic Sheep Energy Requirements And Habitat Selection On Summer Mountain Range Using Low-Cost Gps Collar Technology, Elizabeth M. Baum
Theses and Dissertations
With the advent of global position system (GPS) collar technology, we have developed a much greater understanding of the temporal and spatial distribution of livestock and their associated grazing patterns. While significant research using GPS collars has been reported for cattle, little research is available describing collar use in understanding the behavior of domestic sheep. The purpose of our research was to evaluate the energy requirements of sheep with the use of GPS collars. To accomplish this, we adapted a low-cost i-gotU GPS tracking device that is typically designed for cattle and modified it to fit sheep. Each collar was …
