The Formation Of The Diminutive In Brazilian Portuguese, Cristina M. Newell Dec 2021

The Formation Of The Diminutive In Brazilian Portuguese, Cristina M. Newell

Theses and Dissertations

Although the Portuguese diminutive has been analyzed for centuries, there is a lack of descriptive experimental data regarding how native speakers form the diminutive including participants from each state in Brazil. For this study, 1,053 native speakers from each of the 26 states and the federal district of Brazil filled out an online survey, providing information about their age, gender, birth state, and current state of residence in Brazil. Participants selected the form(s) of the diminutive which they would use for 60 test words. Results indicate that the most influential factors in the formation of the diminutive are the age …

Galectin-1: Development Of A Novel Protein Therapy For Lgmd2b, Mary Lorena Vallecillo Munguia Dec 2021

Galectin-1: Development Of A Novel Protein Therapy For Lgmd2b, Mary Lorena Vallecillo Munguia

Theses and Dissertations

Muscular dystrophies are a heterogeneous group of genetic diseases that involve mutations in genes leading to progressive muscular weakness. Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy 2B (LGMD2B) is a subset of muscular dystrophy caused by mutations in the DYSF gene, which encodes for dysferlin protein and has an incidence of 1/100,000-1/200,000 people, or 1/300 people of Libyan Jewish descent. Since there is no effective treatment that can cure or reverse effects of LGMD2B once diagnosed, our goal is to investigate and develop a protein therapy that mitigates effects of this disease in patients. Galectin-1 (Gal-1) is a small, soluble 14.5 kDa protein with …

Investigating The Influence Of Available Drinking Water On Wildlife In Utah's West Desert, Danielle K. Finlayson Dec 2021

Investigating The Influence Of Available Drinking Water On Wildlife In Utah's West Desert, Danielle K. Finlayson

Theses and Dissertations

The availability of water is a limiting resource for many wildlife species in arid and semi- arid environments. Free water is essential for critical life stages for numerous species, including migration, reproduction, survival, and habitat selection. Riparian areas in the desert occur relatively infrequently, but support a disproportionally large percentage of plant and wildlife species found in arid environments. Our study covered two aspects of water use in the west desert of Utah. The first was assessing the impacts of nonnative ungulates (specifically feral horses and cattle) on natural springs, and how they influenced water quality, vegetation, and wildlife diversity …

Identifying Sinorhizobium Meliloti Genes That Determine Fitness Outcomes, Alexander B. Benedict Dec 2021

Identifying Sinorhizobium Meliloti Genes That Determine Fitness Outcomes, Alexander B. Benedict

Theses and Dissertations

The remarkable metabolic capacity of the soil-dwelling bacterium Sinorhizobium meliloti is encoded on its three circular replicons: the chromosome and two large megaplasmids, pSymA and pSymB. Despite making up 45% of the genome, the pSymA and pSymB megaplasmids can be cured from S. meliloti. This unique attribute provides an opportunity to study the essentiality of chromosomal genes in the presence or absence of nearly half the genome. By interrogating chromosomal genes via massively parallel transposon insertion sequencing (Tn-seq) in the presence and absence of pSymA and pSymB, we identified 307 genes as being essential for viability regardless of the genomic …

Saprotrophy Among Endophytic Fungi, Emily Marissa Weatherhead Dec 2021

Saprotrophy Among Endophytic Fungi, Emily Marissa Weatherhead

Theses and Dissertations

Endophytic fungi have been found in every terrestrial plant investigated thus far. They can receive nutritional benefits from their host tissues. Two major modes of nutrition for endophytic fungi include biotrophy and saprotrophy. In chapter 1, I set out to determine whether endophytic fungi isolated from Quercus gambelii in Utah, USA were capable of saprotrophy and, if some were, how much variation in saprotrophic ability exists among them. Because saprotrophy requires moisture and, in Utah, moisture is largely unavailable outside winter and early spring, in chapter 2 I set out to determine if any of our isolated endophytic fungi were …

In The Beginning: Genesis 1-3 And Its Significance To The Latter-Day Saints, Dan Belnap, Daniel L. Belnap Dec 2021

In The Beginning: Genesis 1-3 And Its Significance To The Latter-Day Saints, Dan Belnap, Daniel L. Belnap

Faculty Publications

This volume begins with the same event the Bible itself does—the Creation. The Creation narrative and the Garden of Eden narrative that immediately follows have been the subject of much study throughout the years. Over the past century, particular attention has been given to the similarities between it and other ancient Near Eastern Creation narratives. For Latter-day Saints, the Creation and Garden of Eden narratives play central roles in their worship practices, the narratives themselves laying down the plan of salvation God ordained for all his children. In this first chapter, Dan Belnap describes what creation meant to those of …

Hybrid Bermudagrass And Kentucky Bluegrass Response Under Deficit Irrigation In A Semi-Arid, Cool Season Climate, Hanna R. Burgin Nov 2021

Hybrid Bermudagrass And Kentucky Bluegrass Response Under Deficit Irrigation In A Semi-Arid, Cool Season Climate, Hanna R. Burgin

Theses and Dissertations

As average global temperatures rise, cool-season C3 turfgrasses, such as the most commonly grown Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.; KBG), struggle to tolerate extreme summer heat and increase their water consumption. Hybrid Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers. × Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt Davy; HBG) is a warm-season C4 grass that may be increasingly suited for northern ecosystems traditionally classified as transition or cool-season climate zones. Glasshouse and field studies were conducted to compare HBG and KBG water use. The objective of the glasshouse study was to evaluate plant health and growth for two HBG cultivars (‘DT-1’ and ‘NorthBridge’) compared to a …

Seasonal Fish Communities In Three Northern California Estuaries, Katherine Osborn, Tim Mulligan, Andre Buchheister Nov 2021

Seasonal Fish Communities In Three Northern California Estuaries, Katherine Osborn, Tim Mulligan, Andre Buchheister

Western North American Naturalist

The majority of Northern California estuaries are small, flooded river valleys that are largely unstudied due to their small sizes. Yet these estuaries serve as important nursery areas for many marine fish species, including rockfish, flatfish, smelt, and herring. In addition, they are vital to anadromous species such as Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and steelhead (O. mykiss). Some of these small estuaries gained protection with the completion of California’s Marine Protected Area (MPA) network in 2012. From June 2014 to June 2016, we sampled the summer and winter fish communities in 3 estuaries: the Big River …

Phylogenetic Relationships Of Genera In The Caddisfly Family Limnephilidae Using Anchored Hybrid Enrichment-Based Phylogenomic Analysis (Insecta:Trichoptera), Kyle Charles Rawlinson

Theses and Dissertations

Limnephilidae is a large family within Trichoptera, consisting of 4 subfamilies (Dicosmoecinae, Ecclisomyiinae, Limnephilinae, and Philocascinae), 98 genera, and 1178 species. It is among the most diverse families within Trichoptera. It is also ecologically diverse, occupying more habitats than any other family in the order. There are currently no published generic phylogenies of Limnephilidae based on molecular data. Here we used anchored hybrid enrichment to capture and sequence 922 loci for 57 species taken from what have been considered the full range of genera in the family. We expanded the taxon sampling by adding supplementary species with DNA barcodes, 28S …

Modeling User Relationships In Online Communities Of Creators, Berkeley Andrus Nov 2021

Modeling User Relationships In Online Communities Of Creators, Berkeley Andrus

Theses and Dissertations

Those who study creativity, especially from a computational perspective, have long understood the role of social influence in the creative process. This has motivated many efforts to simulate social mechanics in artificial creative systems. However, these simulations have often replicated generic or assumed human behaviors rather than specific anthropological data. In this work we take a more focused approach by quantitatively measuring interactions between creators in online social communities and replicating observed phenomena in a simulated environment. The primary contributions of this thesis are 1) defining quantitative metrics for comparing human and simulated social networks of creators, 2) providing social …

Shrinkage Of Rio Grande Silvery Minnow After Preservation In Formalin And Storage In Ethanol, Joshua D. Grant, Thomas P. Archdeacon Nov 2021

Shrinkage Of Rio Grande Silvery Minnow After Preservation In Formalin And Storage In Ethanol, Joshua D. Grant, Thomas P. Archdeacon

Western North American Naturalist

Understanding how the preservation process affects fish morphology is important for studies that use museum collections as voucher specimens. Sixty-nine Rio Grande silvery minnows (standard length [SL] 32.14–81.65 mm) were observed over 545 days during a formalin-to-water-to-ethanol preservation procedure. Median standard length decreased by the end of each preservation step; specimens shrank 1.06 mm in formalin solution, 1.97 mm in 35% ethanol, 2.17 mm in 50% ethanol, and 2.48 mm in 70% ethanol. Peak shrinkage occurred at 365 d, with a median decrease of 3.86 mm (SL 29.57–75.98 mm). After 545 days, Rio Grande silvery minnows began to increase in …

Heterospecific Coprophagy: Turkey Vulture (Cathartes Aura) Feeding On Cougar (Puma Concolor) Feces, Mauricio González-Jáuregui, Juan Pablo Esparza-Carlos, Margarida Francina Barber Mir

Western North American Naturalist

Records of coprophagic behavior in vultures from both the Old and the New World are rare. We know of only a handful of reports for Turkey Vultures (Cathartes aura). Herein we report a specific event of heterocoprophagia: the consumption of 1-day-old puma (Puma concolor) feces by C. aura in the Manantlán Biosphere Reserve (Jalisco, México). Feces of P. concolor play a role in chemical communication by male pumas, who generally do not cover their feces. Females and juveniles attempt to cover theirs. It is not known whether puma scats provide any nutrients to vultures. …

Record Of Nesting And Fledgling Depredation On Crested Caracara (Caracara Cheriway) In Its Peri-Urban Habitat In The Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, West-Central Mexico, Perla Sugey González-Ruelas, Zayra Arery Guadalupe Muñoz-González, Ana Luisa Santiago-Pérez, Luis Fernando Ramírez-López, Claudia Aurora Uribe-Mú, Verónica Carolina Rosas-Espinoza

Western North American Naturalist

Urban settings represent a challenge to most bird species, although some raptors seem to adjust to new urban environments. The Crested Caracara (Caracara cheriway) is known as an urban-tolerant species. Though caracaras are resident in west-central Mexico, there is no information about the species’ distribution, reproduction, and nesting within a metropolis such as Guadalajara. This species was using the peri-urban setting of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (GMA) to hunt, breed, construct its nests, and care for juveniles. To our knowledge, this is the first reported record of it breeding in a peri-urban setting in Mexico. On 15 February …

Sexual Dimorphism In Titi Monkeys’ Digit (2d:4d) Ratio Is Associated With Maternal Urinary Sex Hormones During Pregnancy, Alexander Baxter, Elizabeth K. Wood, Lynea R. Witczak, Karen L. Bales, James Dee Higley

Faculty Publications

The second-to-fourth digit (2D:4D) ratio is a sexually-dimorphic biomarker for prenatal sex hormone exposure. We investigated whether titi monkeys (Plecturocebus cupreus) exhibit sexually-dimorphic 2D:4D ratio, and whether variation in 2D:4D ratio correlates with maternal testosterone and estrogen levels during early pregnancy. Subjects were 61 adult titi monkeys (32 males, 29 females). For 26 subjects, maternal urine samples were collected approximately 15–20 weeks before birth and assayed for testosterone and estrone conjugate (E1C). Titi monkeys exhibited a human-like pattern of sexual dimorphism in right-hand 2D:4D ratio, with females exhibiting higher 2D:4D ratio than males (β = −0.29, p = .023). For …

Updating The Distribution Of American Black Bears (Ursus Americanus) In Texas Using Community Science, State Agencies, And Natural History Collections, Jessica E. Light, Alaya S. Keane, Jonah W. Evans Oct 2021

Updating The Distribution Of American Black Bears (Ursus Americanus) In Texas Using Community Science, State Agencies, And Natural History Collections, Jessica E. Light, Alaya S. Keane, Jonah W. Evans

Western North American Naturalist

The American black bear (Ursus americanus) is one of largest terrestrial mammals found in Texas. Despite the black bear’s large size and charismatic nature, its distribution across the state has been difficult to determine due to outdated distribution maps. Although recent sighting reports indicate that the current distribution of black bears in Texas may be expanding in some areas, researching changes in black bear populations can be difficult and cost prohibitive. Data from community science initiatives and natural history collections can be useful to better understand species distributions and ecology. We used records from Texas Parks and Wildlife …

Threatened American Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus Americanus) Consumed By Northern Short-Tailed Shrew (Blarina Brevicauda) And Trap Avoidance By Silphidae, Jacob W. Farriester, Brian C. Peterson, Keith Geluso, W. Wyatt Hoback Oct 2021

Threatened American Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus Americanus) Consumed By Northern Short-Tailed Shrew (Blarina Brevicauda) And Trap Avoidance By Silphidae, Jacob W. Farriester, Brian C. Peterson, Keith Geluso, W. Wyatt Hoback

Western North American Naturalist

During the last century, the range of the American burying beetle (Nicrophorus americanus Olivier) has been reduced by >90%. Only isolated, extant populations of this federally threatened species now exist, primarily in the Great Plains. Although the primary reason for this decline remains unclear, anthropogenic changes to habitat and vertebrate food sources used for reproduction have played a significant role. Other factors may be contributing to the decline, but little research has been conducted on understanding predators of N. americanus and how the beetle avoids them. Herein, we document a new predatory species for N. americanus, the northern …

Monitoring The Basking Behavior Of Rio Grande Cooter (Pseudemys Gorzugi) Through Game Cameras In Southeastern New Mexico, Usa, Thanchira Suriyamongkol, Weizhong Tian, Ivana Mali

Western North American Naturalist

Basking is an essential behavior for thermoregulation in turtles. Although basking is widely studied, this behavior varies among populations, habitats, and microclimates. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of game cameras for studying basking activity of Rio Grande Cooter (Pseudemys gorzugi), a New Mexico state-threatened species. From August 2018 to July 2019, images were taken hourly from 07:00 to 19:00 at 3 locations along or near the Black River, New Mexico. We used a generalized linear mixed-effect model to find associations between basking patterns and environmental variables. The species was active year-round, with the greatest number of …
