Welcome To Champ Camp: An Observational Study On The Education And Preparation Of Youth Athletes For A Multi-Sport Games, Michael L. Naraine

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

Youth multi-sport events offer athletes an opportunity to prepare and train for traditional (adult) multi-sport competitions like the Olympic Games, but simultaneously raises questions as to how athletes train and prepare for the former. Thus, the purpose of this study was to uncover how youth athletes were being educated and prepared for a multi-sport games, and whether this preparation was congruent with the circumstances that athletes would encounter. To do so, the Australian Olympic Committee’s “Champ Camp” pre-Games summit was observed, documenting the educational training youth athletes received prior to attending the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games. The findings …

Existentially Guilty: Where Do I Go From Here?, Devontae Wilson

Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects

Teachers, students, parents, and even politicians have been forced to confront the by-products of not having difficult conversations about race and class. Political pundits are using this moment in history sparked by recorded injustice and the publicized murders of unarmed black people at the hands of law enforcement to demonize Critical Race Theory (CRT), a framework created to analyze how the law is racialized. This portfolio is largely a result of Dr. Rudine Sims-Bishop’s “Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors” and contextualizing it through my personal experience as a classroom teacher, as a black man in a majority white, female …

Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story? A Marxist Analysis Of "Hamilton" And Its Relationship To The Broadway Economic System, Alana Ritt

Honors Projects

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s mega-hit Hamilton: An American Musical has been both a critical and academic darling since its premiere in 2015. A historical retelling of America’s inception through the eyes of an oft-ignored founding father, the musical weaves together a diverse cast and hip-hop musical stylings in order to tell the story of “America then, as told by America now.” While many critics and scholars alike have praised the musical for putting an exciting and accessible twist to American history, others have argued that the musical is not nearly as “revolutionary” as it claims to be. This essay is designed to …

The Experiences Of Black Women Pursuing Advanced Degrees In Stem, Denaja Haygood Apr 2021

The Experiences Of Black Women Pursuing Advanced Degrees In Stem, Denaja Haygood

Honors Projects

Black women are severely underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. While the underrepresentation of professional Black women in STEM has been well-researched, the pipeline problem of the education of Black women in STEM has been overlooked. The number of Black women pursuing STEM degrees dramatically decreases as the level of education increases. This gap in the literature is problematic, because Black women are still severely underrepresented in STEM-focused advanced degree programs. A small but growing literature indicates that Black women tend to experience frequent forms of discrimination, feelings of isolation and less satisfaction with their graduate programs, …

Mental Health Support And Advocacy For Undergraduate Bgsu Students In Wood County, Oh, Robert Lince

Honors Projects

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health has been a topic receiving significant focus on college campuses across the United States. Thus, it is important for all undergraduate college students to understand the available organizations and facilities that will provide the most quality and effective mental health care. With BGSU undergraduates already facing academic and social pressures, in addition to the financial and other hardships brought on by the pandemic, it is imperative that students are aware of resources both on campus and in the local community so that their needs can be met appropriately and in a …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Nutritional Patterns Of School-Aged U.S. Children, Abigail Prendergast

Honors Projects

This study aims to evaluate the nutritional impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on children within the U.S. by assessing how children’s nutritional patterns have changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, determining how these changes are impacted by participation in school federal nutrition assistance programs, and exploring additional food-related barriers the COVID-19 pandemic has created for families. A cross-sectional survey of American parents was used to evaluate changes to their children’s nutritional patterns. Data was collected through an electronic survey administered through the Qualtrics platform. Participants were recruited through Facebook advertisements and the distribution of electronic survey links. The COVID-19 …

Racial Racial Discrimination Within The United States Criminal Justice System, Courtney Speigal Apr 2021

Racial Racial Discrimination Within The United States Criminal Justice System, Courtney Speigal

Honors Projects

For my senior honors project, I chose the topic of discrimination within our criminal justice system. I will be attending law school next year, and this topic has inspired me to become a lawyer. 2020 has been a year with a lot of protesting against social injustice, and change in our democracy. The Black Lives Matter Movement came to light once again, because of a number of questionable cases involving African American citizens. Considering all of this, I decided to research further the discrimination in our country, in a number of areas. I also will be looking at how we …

Virtual Culinary Tourism In The Time Of Covid 19, Lucy Long Mar 2021

Virtual Culinary Tourism In The Time Of Covid 19, Lucy Long

Visions in Leisure and Business

As the COVID-19 pandemic closed borders and shut down travel in 2020, culinary tourists have turned to virtual experiences for satisfying their curiosity about new foods and tastes. Individuals as well as industry professionals have focused their energies on cooking shows, cookbooks, food memoires, blogs, and both formal media and informal social media. These activities represent a philosophical approach to tourism as a state of seeing or attitude that represents the humanities-based definition of culinary tourism as "eating out of curiosity" rather than the more industry-driven one of food-motivated travel to a destination.

These virtual formats may be reaching a …

Has A Pandemic Provided An Opportunity For Food In Tourism?, John D. Mulcahy Mar 2021

Has A Pandemic Provided An Opportunity For Food In Tourism?, John D. Mulcahy

Visions in Leisure and Business

This is an autoethnographic perspective, informed by my experience over four decades as a practitioner, policy maker and academic. The primary thrust of my argument is that, within the wider tourism industry, food in tourism is integral across all sectors, markets, and populations with enormous and sustainable social and economic potential. Realising that potential requires a shift beyond the existing traditional tourism paradigm that is based on narrow economic objectives. The pandemic may have created a tipping point, forcing that paradigm to shift to holistic, collaborative, and sustainable objectives reflecting fresh societal, cultural, environmental, and economic concerns. It is therefore …

Teaching Food Tourism In Ireland-Reflections From Covid-19, Ziene Mottiar, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire Mar 2021

Teaching Food Tourism In Ireland-Reflections From Covid-19, Ziene Mottiar, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire

Visions in Leisure and Business

This paper is a reflection of the development of a Food Tourism module over the last 5 years in TU Dublin with particular focus on the impact of COVID on pedagological strategies. The module emerged as a reaction to an environment in which tourism, and food tourism, was being identified as increasingly important and on the program team there was a desire to provide students with different perspectives of food. A key element of the module is interaction with industry, via guest lectures, case studies and a field trip. COVID-19 had a significant impact as teaching and learning pivoted online. …

Mass – Market Us – Caribbean Cruise Travel During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Implications For Culinary Tourism, Shayan S. Lallani Mar 2021

Mass – Market Us – Caribbean Cruise Travel During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Implications For Culinary Tourism, Shayan S. Lallani

Visions in Leisure and Business

Culturally themed dining is a popular offering on mass-market cruises operating in the US- Caribbean market, with companies often marketing these experiences as opportunities for immersion in societies perceived as foreign. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted every aspect of cruise ship dining. As an intimate activity that brings people together through the sharing of food and culinary memories, dining on cruise ships as it was pre-pandemic is no longer feasible during a global event that asks people to stay apart. Cruise lines and authorities responsible for regulating the industry have implemented important safety measures to protect passengers and crew onboard, as …

Therefore, the purpose was to examine the prevalence of anger in collegiate student-athletes across sex, academic status, and sport type. Methods: A cross sectional study over a three-year period examined 759 NCAA Division I student-athletes at one institution (age=20±1 years; males: n=259; females: n=500) completed an optional pre-participation behavioral health screening questionnaire, personal demographic information and the Anger Index Self-Test. Results: Overall, 37.2% (n=282/759; males=127/259, 49.0%; females=155/500, 31.0%) of participants were at …

An Examination Of Campus Engagement And Gpa For Latinx College Athlete, Guillermo Ortega Mar 2021

An Examination Of Campus Engagement And Gpa For Latinx College Athlete, Guillermo Ortega

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

Despite the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s focus on improving outcomes among college athletes, research has overlooked Latinx college athletes. This paper focuses on how campus engagement with peers, faculty, administrators, and athletic staff are positively related to GPA among Latinx college athletes. I used an ordinary least square (OLS) regression model to examine the relationships between engagement and Latinx college athletes' GPA. The findings suggest that high school GPA, participation in class, and faculty-student interactions were significant for Latina/o college athletes' GPA. Additionally, interactions with teammates and coach were both significant predictors, but team interactions had a slight negative effect …

Relationships Between Athlete Activist Identities And Resilience In College Athletes, Travis R. Scheadler, Robert J. Reese, Marc L. Cormier Mar 2021

Relationships Between Athlete Activist Identities And Resilience In College Athletes, Travis R. Scheadler, Robert J. Reese, Marc L. Cormier

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

Many high-profile athletes have engaged in athlete activism and continued to remain successful both in sport and activism. Although several barriers have been documented preventing athletes from engaging in activism (e.g., public criticism, status and job loss, withdrawal of funding, anticipated distress; Cunningham & Regan, 2012), activism itself has also been connected to several positive outcomes (e.g., improved confidence, self-concept, belief in change, agency, life meaning; Klar & Kasser, 2009; Rabkin, McElhiney, Harrington, & Horn, 2018). Indeed, both sport and activism provide opportunities for athlete activists to develop resilience. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to examine the …
