Are Introductory Courses A Proper Venue For Deep Thought About The Discipline?, John H. Hoag, M. Neil Browne Sep 2009

Are Introductory Courses A Proper Venue For Deep Thought About The Discipline?, John H. Hoag, M. Neil Browne

Economics Faculty Publications

An introductory course is the discipline's handshake; it is the greeting that either seals the deal or in varying degrees convinces the learner that this discipline has little usefulness. Given the huge stakes in forming a strategy for the introductory course, how should we structure the course? The argument in this paper is that we should encourage students to think deeply about the discipline. In other words, we should encourage an appreciation for the complexity of the vocabulary, the underlying assumptions, and the kinds of evidence relied on in the discipline in question.

Where Do People Drown? Encoding The Third Component Of The 4w Model, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly, David Llewellyn Aug 2009

Where Do People Drown? Encoding The Third Component Of The 4w Model, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly, David Llewellyn

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

When there is human activity in, above, or around an aquatic environment, a drowning incident may occur due to rescuer characteristics, casualty characteristics, location, and general circumstances (Avramidis, Butterly & Llewellyn, 2007). The aim of the current study was to identify locations where people drown. Qualitative content analysis was utilized to analyze drowning incident videos (n = 41), and semi-structured interviews were conducted of those involved in drowning incidents (n = 34). Drowning incidents may occur in any aquatic environment with a water depth that allows immersion or submersion, under a variety of environmental conditions where the ground in sloping, …

An Investigation Of Parents’ And Children’S Perceptions About Their Participation In A Community-Based Swim Team Program, Kelli R. Paquette, Jonathon B. Smith Aug 2009

An Investigation Of Parents’ And Children’S Perceptions About Their Participation In A Community-Based Swim Team Program, Kelli R. Paquette, Jonathon B. Smith

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Why are young swimmers smiling after two hours of intense, daily swim team practices filled with swimming countless laps and focusing on improving their various swimming strokes? What drives parents to willingly transport their children to and from their local YMCAs for swim team practices? Why are swim team participants willing, and even eager, to sit in steamy, hot swimming pool areas and watch or swim in competitive events that last for hours and hours? These are simply a few questions one might have when considering the amount of time, involvement, and commitment required while participating in a community-based YMCA …

Assessment Of Risk Factors For Injuries On Beaches, J. Arturo Abraldes, Jorge Pérez-Gómez Aug 2009

Assessment Of Risk Factors For Injuries On Beaches, J. Arturo Abraldes, Jorge Pérez-Gómez

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this study was to examine the risk factors for injuries on a beach. It is important to know all the risk fctors for injuries that can happen in a beach in order to prevent accidents. Risk factors were grouped in four main categories: beach morphology (BM), beach equipment (BE), lifeguard service (LS) and miscellaneous aspects (MA). All of them were evaluated according to their importance using a survey by Spanish and International experts. Descriptive analysis showed that LS is the main mechanism by which to reduce injuries on a beach. Lifeguard service in-service training is very important …

Who Drowns? Encoding The Second Component Of The 4w Model, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly, David Llewellyn Aug 2009

Who Drowns? Encoding The Second Component Of The 4w Model, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly, David Llewellyn

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The aim of the current study was to identify the casualty characteristics that contribute to drowning according to the 4W model (Avramidis, Butterly & Llewellyn, 2007, 2009). Qualitative content analysis was utilized to analyze drowning incident videos (n = 41), and semistructured interviews of those involved in drowning incidents (n = 34). Results confirm that human activity in, on, and around an aquatic environment can lead to drowning, regardless of the casualty’s type, gender, age, ethnicity, and area of residence. Males far outnumber females as drowning victims. Younger persons were more likely to drown than were adults. Due to socioeconomic …

Long-Term Effects Of Parents' Education On Children's Educational And Occupational Success Mediation By Family Interactions, Child Aggression, And Teenage Aspirations, Eric F. Dubow, Paul Boxer, L. Rowell Husemann Jul 2009

Long-Term Effects Of Parents' Education On Children's Educational And Occupational Success Mediation By Family Interactions, Child Aggression, And Teenage Aspirations, Eric F. Dubow, Paul Boxer, L. Rowell Husemann

Psychology Faculty Publications

We examine the prediction of individuals' educational and occupational success at age 48 from contextual and personal variables assessed during their middle childhood and late adolescence. We focus particularly on the predictive role of the parents' educational level during middle childhood, controlling for other indices of socioeconomic status and children's IQ, and the mediating roles of negative family interactions, childhood behavior, and late adolescent aspirations. Data come from the Columbia County Longitudinal Study, which began in 1960 when all 856 third graders in a semirural county in New York State were interviewed along with their parents; participants were reinterviewed at …

Parents, Pals, Or Pedagogues? How Youth Learn About Water Safety, Kevin Moran May 2009

Parents, Pals, Or Pedagogues? How Youth Learn About Water Safety, Kevin Moran

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

While investment in water safety education appears sound, little is known about how youth construct their understanding of water safety principles and what formative influences impact on their beliefs and practices. Year 11 students (n = 2,202) from 41 high schools took part in a nationwide survey on youth water safety knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. The self-completion written questionnaire was undertaken in school time in the second term of 2003. Data were analyzed using a range of sociodemographic variables, including gender, socioeconomic status and ethnicity. The formative influence of peers, family, and schooling on the water safety of youth who …

Survey Of Primary Schools Across Australia: An Examination Of Key Water Safety Issues, Amy Elizabeth Peden, Richard C. Franklin, Penny Larsen

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Water safety education in Australia (including learn-to-swim) is primarily taught at the primary school level. There is increasing concern that water safety education is decreasing. This study aimed to gain a greater understanding of the barriers to providing water safety education in Australia. We surveyed a random sample of primary schools stratified by location, region and school type. This qualitative survey collected information on activities, qualifications, safety issues and measures, and demographics. The four key issues that impact on the provision and safety of school based water safety education were access to qualified staff, facility access, use of alternative aquatic …
