The Dual Demands Of College Student-Athletes: A Qualitative Exploration Of Contributors And Barriers To Academic And Athletic Success, Kayleigh Hart, Leilani Madrigal, Alison Ede, Janaina Fogaca
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
College student-athletes perform at high levels in school and sport. Previous studies have found academic barriers (e.g., time management) and contributors (e.g., academic center supports; Hardin & Pate, 2013), but there is a need to investigate factors that impact success for athletic and academic pursuits in tandem. In the present study 176 college student-athletes across nine institutions and 18 sports answered the following: What do you feel contributes to your success (1) in school? (2) in your sport(s)? What do you feel is a barrier to your success (3) in school? (4) in your sport(s)? Themes were categorized as intrinsic …

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Prior to the start of the pandemic in 2020, almost two-thirds of all varsity athletes across gender and sport in Canada had engaged in a sport hazing ritual (Johnson et al., 2018). While hazing in sport has been researched from a variety of perspectives, few studies have examined hazing in the context of varsity athletes' social media use. This is a potential space where Johnson (2017) suggested that technological tools such as cellphones, that provide instant access to social media, have enabled users to more easily capture and post online, potentially exacerbating the trauma inflicted on rookies during team hazing …

The Heart Of Higher Education: Rediscovering Meditation From The Margins Of Learning To A Liberatory Pedagogy In The Post-Pandemic University, Jinting Wu, Yuejia Wang, Yu Wu, Qi Zhang
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
On May 14th, 2022, a racially motivated mass shooting occurred in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Western New York. The trauma brought fresh anguish to a fraught social landscape already shaken by COVID-19 and resurgent racism. This paper explores the formation of a campus meditation group that emerged in light of the shooting tragedy and prolonged pandemic suffering, and its members’ journeys of healing, self-discovery, and transformation. While scholars have critiqued the neoliberal higher education for producing self-enterprising individuals motivated by economic rationality, this paper offers our humble attempt to re-center meditation as a liberatory pedagogy in fostering …

African American Male Reluctance In Teacher Education, Michael L. Williams
African American Male Reluctance In Teacher Education, Michael L. Williams
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
There is a shortage of teachers among rapidly expanding populations of culturally diverse students in K-12 education. Minority students enrolled in public schools have been rising while the number of minority teachers has been falling. Twenty percent of teachers are from ethnic and racial backgrounds, however, schools educate majority-minority populations. What is most troubling, is that the most negatively impacted student of K-12 diverse populations is African-American males. This commentary focuses on the fact that there are initiatives and ideas to close the teacher diversity gap by creating pipelines of African American male teachers. However, the effort it takes to …

Labyrinthine Routes To Meditation: Contemplative Pedagogy And Instructor Self-Care, Natalie Mera Ford
Labyrinthine Routes To Meditation: Contemplative Pedagogy And Instructor Self-Care, Natalie Mera Ford
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
In the pandemic- and post-pandemic era, new as well as exacerbated work-life stressors have led academia to recognize the vital role wellness plays in teaching and learning. While most institutional and pedagogical response has understandably focused on students’ holistic health, this essay promotes increased instructor self-care as a necessary complement to supporting learners in higher education. By practicing meditative exercises drawn from contemplative pedagogy, faculty and instructional staff can create synergy between mindfulness strategies that we might invite students to try and our own attention to the whole self outside class. As the essay’s case study shows, labyrinth walking in …

The Laughing Buddha: The Education Of Compassionate Leaders Through Improvisational Play, Belinda Chiu
The Laughing Buddha: The Education Of Compassionate Leaders Through Improvisational Play, Belinda Chiu
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
With an urgency to build a generative future, educational systems do not have a choice but to pay attention to how and what we train our future leaders. Yet there is still a gap as leadership studies are often relegated as a “soft” skill, rather than integrated as technical knowledge critical to the holistic effectiveness of a tertiary education. As a result, there is often a disconnect between students immersed in the idealistic bubble of the academy and graduates navigating life outside. Inquiry- and reflective-based methods of contemplative practices may be critical for leaders to avoid short-term, short-sighted decisions that …

Burnout In Youth Sports: A Guide For Parents To Navigate Youth, Sean Rafferty Ii
Burnout In Youth Sports: A Guide For Parents To Navigate Youth, Sean Rafferty Ii
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Youth sports have become a territory where the pressure to be the best is more important than enjoying the game and playing for fun. The commercialization of all youth sports has pushed many parents to make their children specialize in one sport at an early age, by putting them in multiple leagues for a single sport and signing up for private lessons. Parents do this because they are told to do so by travel team officials and if they do not, they are judged. This mindset has created unrealistic expectations, convincing parents that their child is going to be an …
Book Review: Cultivating Change, Katie Morris
Book Review: Cultivating Change, Katie Morris
International Journal of Playwork Practice
This book explores how disadvantaged teenagers develop emotionally, socially, and academically through hands-on experiences at therapeutic farms. It provides a clear, practical guide to engaging with young people who may be reluctant to interact. It is written in accessible language, free from scientific jargon and presents real-life examples and thought-provoking ideas. The book makes a valuable contribution to the relatively unexplored area of farm-based playwork that playwork practitioners can apply in any setting.
Fp-25-08 Older Adult Cohabiting And Married Couples, Christopher A. Julian
Fp-25-08 Older Adult Cohabiting And Married Couples, Christopher A. Julian
National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles
As gray divorce has increased over the past few decades (Brown, Lin, & Julian, 2024), many older adults have chosen cohabitation over remarriage when repartnering (Brown et al., 2019). In 2000, fewer than 1 million older men and women cohabited (Brown, Lee, & Bulanda, 2006). By 2017, this number had grown to approximately 4 million (Stepler, 2017) and reached 4.6 million by 2022 (Julian & Brown, forthcoming). This rise in later-life cohabitation reflects a broad shift in relationship patterns, with cohabitation operating as an alternative to remarriage in later life (Brown & Wright, 2017). Using data from the 2023 American …

What Is A School Shooting? An Analysis Of School Shooting Incidents From 1994 To 2025, Nevaeh Emerich
McNair Scholars Collection
School shootings are a hot topic in the media and an important discussion among citizens of the United States. Despite this, the government does not collect data on school shootings and has left it to lay people, reporters, and researchers to create their own data sources largely culled from media reports. In the present study, I compare two popular datasets, the K-12 School Shooting Database collected by Riedman (2025) and school shootings data collected by reporters at the Washington Post (2025), that claim vastly different numbers of school shooting incidents over time. I examine incidents since the Columbine shootings in …

“I Know More About What We Can’T Do Than What We Can”: Division I Women’S Sports Athletes’ Perceptions Of Name, Image, And Likeness, Jalyn Jimerson, Courtney Jones, Quinn Lukens, Marina Miller, Sarah Stokowski, Michael Godfrey, Trevor Bopp, Chris Corr
The COSMA Journal
This study investigated women’s sport athletes’ perceptions of their ability to profit off name, image, and likeness (NIL) as current participants in collegiate athletics. Researchers conducted comprehensive semi-structured interviews with eight women’s sport athletes representing four NCAA Division I member institutions. Participants explained how institutionally organized programmatic educational initiatives primarily codified impermissible forms of NIL compensation while often omitting information about permissible NIL opportunities. Furthermore, participants considered themselves minimally involved in the NIL space, feeling on the low to average side of NIL engagement compared to their athlete-peers competing in men’s sports. The findings of this study are informative for …

Student Speed Dating As A Catalyst For Creative Idea Generation In Sport Management Programs, Logan Schuetz Ph.D., Yo Han Lee Ph.D., Tyler J. Hajek, Brandy Runyan
The COSMA Journal
This article presents a novel approach to addressing the challenges of idea generation among students in higher education, particularly in the field of sport management. Based on research into student engagement and creativity, the authors suggest incorporating speed dating techniques into both in-person and online classes. Speed dating sessions, conducted in breakout rooms via platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, offer students multiple opportunities to engage in brief, structured interactions, thereby enhancing their presentation skills, idea generation, and perspectives through structured, rapid interactions. Additionally, this method encourages greater collaboration and active participation, improving the overall learning environment. This strategy not …
An Examination Of Athletics Department Culture And Job Satisfactory Of Executive Staff Members In Division I Ncaa Athletics Departments, Kyle Moyer
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
College athletics has undergone some of the biggest changes in our society over the past decade. The experiences of fans and student-athletes have changed drastically. But how does that impact the experiences of athletic administrators working in sport? The ever-changing landscape means that employees must adapt to meet the current needs of the industry. Adaptation often involves discomfort, requiring time, energy, and resilience from those in the profession.

Reimagining Coach Evaluations: High School Athletic Directors' Perspectives On Program Evaluation Practices, Ashley Gerome
Reimagining Coach Evaluations: High School Athletic Directors' Perspectives On Program Evaluation Practices, Ashley Gerome
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
High school athletic programs increasingly face the challenge of ensuring coaches not only are technically proficient but also how well the coaches support their student-athletes’ personal growth, well-being, and development. As traditional, performance-focused evaluation models fall short in addressing these broader goals, there is a growing need for more effective, holistic approaches to coaching evaluation. This study explores how athletic leadership is evolving to meet that need, focusing on the shift from results-driven metrics to athlete-centered, developmental evaluation practices. Though interviews with seven athletic directors to understand how coaching experience, professional identity, and evaluation methods affect leadership and program growth. …

A Design For Teaching Strength And Conditioning In High School Physical Education: Curriculum Development, Kamren Mullican
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
This project was developed out of an interest in providing an example of a flexible, evidence-based curriculum for teaching strength and conditioning in high school physical education. Rather than viewing the weight room as simply a place for exercise, the curriculum presented here positions strength and conditioning as a structured, safe, and standards-aligned instructional component of physical education. It is designed to be organized and adaptable across a variety of high school physical education settings.

The Impact Of Social Media Engagement On Fan Loyalty In Professional Sports, Duane Bartnicki
Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects
Social media has become an essential tool for communication and interaction in the sports industry, transforming how teams connect with their fans. Platforms like X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram offer dynamic spaces for teams to share content, engage directly with followers, and build online communities. For professional sports organizations, the ability to foster engagement with fans is crucial. It not only enhances the fan experience but also plays a significant role in driving loyalty. It gives organizations an opportunity to understand the motivations, loyalty, and relationships of their fan base through insights gained from social media (Kaya and …
Course Structure And Social Outcomes Of Teaching Older Adults To Play Piano In A Group Setting: A Case Study Of Chinese Elderly Participants, Pinlin Liu, Derek Polischuk, Bob Lee
Course Structure And Social Outcomes Of Teaching Older Adults To Play Piano In A Group Setting: A Case Study Of Chinese Elderly Participants, Pinlin Liu, Derek Polischuk, Bob Lee
Visions in Leisure and Business
As the aging population continues to grow, a significant concern for this demographic is their living arrangements. Many older adults prefer to remain in their own homes after retirement rather than transition to long-term care facilities. However, the desire for independent living, particularly among the very elderly, often leads to social disconnection and the risk of social isolation. Facilitating opportunities for social engagement is essential to maintaining the social well-being of older adults. Research underscores the role of leisure activities in fostering skill development and social interaction. In this study, group-based piano lessons were introduced as a platform for older …

A Cross-Cultural Comparative Study Of Electric Vehicle Advertisements From The Perspective Of Visual Grammar, Hu Yumeng, Yizhou Yuan
Visions in Leisure and Business
This article aims to explore the application of visual grammar in a cross-cultural context. Taking the visual grammar performance of electric car advertisements in different cultural backgrounds as an example, it analyzes how visual elements in these advertisements reflect visual grammar from a cross-cultural perspective, focusing on the principles of cross-cultural business communication. Based on the visual grammar theory of Kress and van Leeuwen, this study selected electric vehicle advertising samples from China and the United States and analyzed them using content analysis. The study found that although global electric vehicle advertisements have commonalities in conveying core values such as …

Cross-Cultural Management Strategies Of Chinese Enterprises In Central Asia — A Case Study Of A Shaanxi Agricultural Product Enterprise, Mengyu Dai, Shaojun Bai
Visions in Leisure and Business
Under the guidance of the "Belt and Road" policy, a group of Chinese companies have begun to seek new markets or sources of goods in countries along the route. Central Asia, as an important region among the "Belt and Road" countries, has great appeal to Chinese enterprises. However, different cultures and values pose significant challenges to organizational management. To address these issues, companies place a high emphasis on cross-cultural management strategies, using a range of measures such as salary incentive policies, training local managers, taking on social responsibilities, and through the charisma of leaders to promote cultural identity and integration, …
