Identification Of Critical Events By Lifeguards, Instructors, And Non-Lifeguards, Lyndsey K. Lanagan-Leitzel
Identification Of Critical Events By Lifeguards, Instructors, And Non-Lifeguards, Lyndsey K. Lanagan-Leitzel
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Lifeguards are instructed to respond both to dangerous behavior and to distress/drowning events. Variability in lifeguard effectiveness may result from variability in how individual lifeguards define what events are important to monitor (“critical events”). The variability in defining critical events was examined in the current study by presenting videos of normal aquatic activity to lifeguards (N=17), lifeguard instructors (N=10), non-lifeguards (N=20), and students enrolled in a lifeguarding course (N=12). Participants were asked to identify the events that they thought were important for a lifeguard to monitor and provide an explanation as to why they were critical. All participant groups (instructors …

Organizational Support And Communication: A Case Study Of A New Risk Management Tool For University Aquatic Supervision, Steven S. Mccune, Richard Hsiao, Robert Kostelnik
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Research of in-service training and risk management strategies suggests that there are dysfunctions among employees that have a lack of team understanding about risk management and risk plans (Ammon & Brown, 2007; Hsiao & Kostelnik, 2009). Furthermore, theorists who study the dynamics of employee-employer relationships provide evidence that strong interpersonal support fosters a healthy staff mentality with regard to organizational goal commitment (Eisenburger et al. 1986). A seven-point Likert questionnaire was administered to 15 student lifeguards at one Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Division II institution. Twenty-four questions identified three dependent variables, two relating to organizational support and one …

Can You Swim? Self-Report And Actual Swimming Competence Among Young Adults In Ballarat, Australia, Lauren A. Petrass, Jennifer D. Blitvich, G. Keith Mcelroy, Jack Harvey, Kevin Moran
Can You Swim? Self-Report And Actual Swimming Competence Among Young Adults In Ballarat, Australia, Lauren A. Petrass, Jennifer D. Blitvich, G. Keith Mcelroy, Jack Harvey, Kevin Moran
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This paper reports the Australian findings in an international study comparing self-reported and actual swimming and aquatic skills of young adults. Physical Education and Sports Sciences students (n=263) completed the “Can You Swim?” self-report survey and practical skills assessment, unaware that the practical tests replicated survey items. Relationships for comparisons between practical tests and their matched survey item were weak, indicating participants had inaccurate perceptions of their own swimming skills. Typically, they underestimated their competence in terms of distance and fundamental aquatic skills. Understanding of what constitutes different levels of swimming ability was poor, for example, most participants identified as …
Movement Patterns In Free Water Play After Swimming Teaching With Flotation Aids, Per-Ludvik Kjendlie, Marcel Mendritzki
Movement Patterns In Free Water Play After Swimming Teaching With Flotation Aids, Per-Ludvik Kjendlie, Marcel Mendritzki
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The aim of this study was to investigate the movement patterns of children during free play in a swimming school setting. It was hypothesized that children being taught using flotation vests would be less likely to surface dive, jump, and dive during free play. In this study, 24 participants were observed using a video camera during a 10-minutes free play at the end of a learn-to-swim session. Each subject had undergone 10 lessons either using a flotation vest (n = 11) or without (n = 13). The results showed that the flotation aid group (FLOAT) had significantly fewer surface dives …

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Little is known about the relationship between real and perceived water competence among youth in the context of drowning prevention or of their perceptions of their risk of drowning. This study reports the findings of an international project entitled Can You Swim? The participants (n = 373) were assessed in a two-part study using an initial questionnaire survey to provide self-estimates of water competency and risk perception, followed by six practical tests in the water. Correlation coefficients between perceived and real swimming competency (rs = 0.369) and floating (rs = 0.583) were significant, but only moderate in strength. No significant …

Social Fun And Enjoyment: Viable Outcomes In Aquatics For Individuals With Physical Disabilities, Ellen Broach, Alexis Mckenney
Social Fun And Enjoyment: Viable Outcomes In Aquatics For Individuals With Physical Disabilities, Ellen Broach, Alexis Mckenney
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This manuscript examines the literature pertaining to the effects of enjoyment and social fun and their application to individuals with disabilities in goal-oriented aquatic interventions. Literature related to the effects of positive emotion, disability issues related to positive emotion states, the nature of the aquatic environment, and programs that may facilitate positive emotions are examined. Research studies support the belief that participation in goal-oriented aquatics program can provide individuals with realistic solutions for not only maintaining physical fitness and achieving rehabilitation goals, but also for attaining fun or enjoyment states that improve health and longevity. The paper highlights implications of …

The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding, and the Body Shape Questionnaire were administered to examine the relationship between self esteem, body image, and online impression management in relation to Facebook usage.Responses from 103 female college students revealed that users with a heavier BMI had less pictures posted on their profile, engaged in less impression management, and had nearly half as fewer friends than users with a lower BMI. Females who reported they had no content on their Facebook they would not want family members or work supervisors viewing had higher body image (M = 50.09, SD = …

Music And Its Effect In The Classroom, Melanie Stegemiller
Honors Projects
The focus of this project is a plan to play background music when students are working at their desks, reading, working at centers, and other appropriate times when students will not be distracted. The author plans to play piano, classical, and jazz music. By playing background music the author states she will be activating the creative right side of a child’s brain while teaching to the logical left hemisphere. This is important, according to the author because studies have shown that by activating both hemispheres of the brain improved cerebral cortex activity can occur. By increasing this activity it will …
